A little bit of an experiment in Decoding Technology as Matt and I test out what happens if we record live responses to guru content. No live audience this time just us, Gary and his complaints about Rory Stewart.

Let us know what you think.

Decoding Gary's Grievances

Gary was insulted by Rory Stewart, who labelled him as not an economist. But he's not concerned with that, he's worried how this is attack on all the rest of us. I knew a guy who has a PhD in finance (in Japan) and who would get furious if anyone suggested he was an economist.

DTG, on the cutting edge of decoding technology.

I like how Gary has realized that its impossible for him to prove that he was the best trader at the citibank. One might say than that's maybe not the best achievment to build your reputation on.

I know it's a small thing, but it stood out to me that Gary, who went to secondary school in the UK, has lived almost his whole life there and makes no effort at all to hide his accent or dialect, has a "high school" whatsapp group. Script is written for his target audience.

Love the new venture into live video! Ever thought about doing Decoding Cruises?

ValueSoup

If Gary stopped with all that credentialism he could probably attract much of the same audience. Many people on the left like his economic message, so there's little need for all this self-aggrandizement. Heck, it would make it easier for him when he's being criticized for his mistakes, because he could just say: "I'm not an economist, these are just my political beliefs".

I love the fact that gary just casually drops "maybe economics students want to go into AI now" at like 35 mins. What a demented thing to say. I co-lead an AI dept in a pretty midsized fintech and I would rather chop of my thumb than have some bloviating business guy in our team. The fuck would I even to with someone like that? Claude Code can produce empty business-speak at a thousand words a minute anyway. Shove those maniacs into McKinsey, please

Looks good. I like the new tech approach !

A mate of mine drew my attention to Gary. This was coincidentally just before DTG ran their vicious hit-piece (jk), then broke the 3 hour mark, I think, doubling down. Oh, guys. ❤️ Anyway he's not going to buy his book any more, and also he wants me to shut up about it. So I've sent him this, obvs.

A successful test, I’d say (except for an occasional echo from Gary, as somebody else mentioned)! IDK about the UK, but were he in the US Gary probably could have gotten a teaching position at a university’s business school after he left Citibank. Similar to one of Rory Stewart’s academic titles, “Professor of the Practice.” Maybe not teaching advanced economic theory, but teaching about markets and the stuff he did at Citi. But of course teaching at a B-school is for saps and millionaires’ kids, not brilliant minds like Gary’s.

This works. Its a version of... what... im thinking Professor Dave. He pauses and rips into the person and their utterances. No doubt other examples of a similar technique can be seen elsewhere. Im really enjoying it. This might be a significant milestone. Whatever content you choose to focus on, if it hits big, will cement in the minds of yr new audience an idea of who you are and what you celebrate/condemn. You're pretty reserved about doing both those things, but maybe get ready to be lumped in with strange bedfellows, innit? "Lumped in". Such a great phrase. Probably unfamiliar to lots of ppl reading this. I daresay Google will explain it better than me.

I loved watching this. However, much like I imagine a lot of people are, I admire Gary's overall message and goal but I think the guy is such a flop. I can't stand people who constantly feel the need to bignote themselves.

Are you planning to make this available as audio file? I'm spending too much time looking at screens already. 🤷‍♂️ Listening to video content is a hassle, because the playback stops when the screen locks.

I will now apply pure Game Theory to Chris' location. Know fact one: Chris uses a filter to hide his background to prevent being doxed. Known fact two: Chris believes his background is revealing. Premise one: Most people are not familiar with Japan. Premise two: Most people only know Japan for mount Fuji. Conclusion: CHIRS LIVES ON MOUNT FUJI!

I thought this format worked very well & look forward to seeing you do it again. I've also enjoyed your various analyses of Gary - I find him completely unwatchable. He just repeats the same thing over and over again and never reaches a clear conclusion - it's pure waffle.

Matt and Chris, the Batman and Robin of our universe, saving us from hypocrisy - one decoding at a time. I’m here for it!

Lucy

Ronaldo - expert based on experience. Stewart - not expert because he doesn’t have a post-grad degree (but does have experience). Hmm.

Shambles

Jaffa cakes? A biscuit? Madness.

This ep was like DTG—Mystery Science 3000 style!
