Jimmy Carr needs putting in his place...

Jonas

Oof, genuinely tough choice, would like all three

Deniz Stiegemann

Jimmy Carr is too obvious. Alain De Botton is interesting because it’s more subtle and the British accents lulls you into a false sense of competence.

ChrisH

Jimmy Carr is a c***.

Shane O’ Dwyer

Tim Ferris, but only because I heavily bought into the 4-Hour Body as a wayward youth

Chris Rincón

I’ve had enough optimizers for one lifetime. Find them to be incredibly boring people for the most part.

Jacob

Have they done a gurometer of Patrick Bet David yet, cause that would be amazing. Jimmy Carr for now though.

Miles Curry

Jimmy Carr will probably win this poll due to his popularity, but I think Tim Ferriss is a very interesting case. I have some friends who really like him, and for a while I listened to him too and enjoyed a few episodes. I am not sure if he is a 'guru', but I think he sits in an interesting place just before guru. I definitely feel like he is influential in terms of his pod-cast style and it would be good to see how he behaves in relation to our other gurus.

Rich F

Voted Ferriss cos id like to know more about him. Jimmy's recent evolution is interesting tho & I haven't checked in on De Botton in years and years... Id say Ferriss, De Botton and then Carr would be my order of preference. Don't mind really tho

Corey Brazendale

My instinct was to vote for Jimmy but I don't think we are seeing his 'final form' just yet, there will be more material to come.

iffydonatello

The self help aspects of guru-dom are highest with Ferris and Bottom. But Carr is a nice move into the Comedian Season

Theic

At least Jimmy Carr is occasionally funny. I’ve been noticing recently how very humourless the gurus are. They are so very … joyless

Salty John

That guy's thumb is on the wrong way

James Pulver

I think Ferris is at least an influencer and would be interested in checking his ideas. Of course I only know the littlest about him, but I have heard of him before. Carr I seem to recall finding a little funny 10ish years ago. Haven't seen anything of his recently, but would he basically be a potentially funnier Joe Rogan?

Thomas Czikmantori

Alain De Botton feels like the most interesting/intriguing/substantial/subtle decoding. The other two are obvious buffoons.

Jack Greig-Midlane

I can’t stand Jimmy Carr’s voice/laugh, but I do reckon it is worth paying attention to the rhetoric of a professional (and successful) comedian-turned-guru

Dank Sparrow

Jimmy Carr time to show the UK comedians what's up.

NB

I really want to see you guys cover some of the left-ish online tastemaker types like Michael Hobbes. Please don't make us listen to Jimmy Carr talk about anything ever. Even the short clips in SM episodes are torturously annoying and mindnunbing

Conor McGee

Ferris is like the godfather of so many of the big gurus today, but more interesting to see where Carr is going at the moment.

Matthew Heusser

Tim Ferriss would be interesting. I've never been impressed by Alain De Bottom. He seems to be saying a bunch of obvious, 101-level philosophy stuff and way too self satisfied. I always suspected he was born into an affluent family with connections, had a decent education, just too low an opinion of his potential audience. Kind of like my thoughts on Russel Brand, I'm like "what does this guy have?" --> Only, believe it or not, with more intensity than with brand.

Eric Lynch

Esther Perel? Hehehe where do we pitch new folks to cover? 😉

Jackie Brown

The 4-hour self-help charlatan all the way. The hogwash and money grabbing should be out of this world.

Chomagerider

If you end up doing all of them, I don't mind who'll be first. I think they'd all be interesting. If we can only get one, De Boton might indeed be most interesting.

Nancy Hale

If ranked choice voting were an option, I’d have de Botton, then Ferris, then Carr. But all of these guys will eventually be decoded, eh?

Adam Sher

Tim Ferris. He's an optimizer, whisperer to tech bros everywhere, funder of research.

Nico

This is one of the times I go "not again", meaning, I've read very useful stuff from Alain De Botton and would never consider him a guru, and yet it's being considered, so I may end up potentially disappointed with someone I find decent. Jimmy Carr I don't know who he is. Tim Ferriss, is the way to go for me. That 4-hour-week trash that in a nutshell means " outsource everything to india" should be lapidated, among all the other super optimisation shit.

Aphrodite Haylock

I voted Tim Ferriss. As for the future, I'd like to suggest Doctor Ramani :)

MoooinkForYourSupper

Think Tim Ferriss is very interesting as the OG of podcasting / self help - especially non redpill self help for men. Can investigate how much of his appeal is style/rhetoric Alain de Botton is better regarded than the average guru so that would be quite a fresh episode Jimmy Carr would obviously be fun to dunk on but he is by far the most similar to the MAGA chuds

n-gons burgess

Hot tip. On the Louie Theroux interview with Carr he mentions that he knows Eric Weinstein (around 45mins in in the section on political tectonics).

Claudia

I voted Tim Ferris, because I am interested in what he is up to these days... I listened to the 4-hour stuff back in the day (that was almost 20 years ago! 😯). Don't even know the other two.

Podcast Phanatic

Alain de Botton because then you might be forced to talk about Proust. 😈

Paul Ditta

It’s 6:15 and I’m still half asleep and I was wondering who in the hell is Patreon Votel and why are they the next guru? I need coffee.

emmajane

Alain De Botton for sure and then Tim Ferris

Joe

Jimmy Carr since the fact he is delusional enough to attempt to pivot from TV comedian person to philosopher etc is too good. At least the other two seems on brand for what pish they talk.

J. Sokal

Tim Ferris, because I only know of his impact on American culture... also make the episode 4-hours long

Deniz Stiegemann

As an additional note, for every Alain de Botton video on YouTube, there’s an expert in the topic who has made a debunking video about it. And it’s not being nitpicky. He appears to be pretty much always quite wrong. One thing I did like though was his very pragmatic views on relationships, romanticisation, and also sexuality.

SHOUNAK SARKAR

I vote for that smug douche Jimmy Carr!

Scott Walkers Ghost

When it comes to comedians I think Tim Dillon would be much more interesting to cover.

Tristan Haze

Jimmy Carr can seem really smart and obviously is in a way, then when in conv with another comic he name checked Eric as this absolute genius it was so jarring and disappointing! It really caught me off guard and totally snapped me into I guess a more accurate sense of his true horizons

Shug

I like saying Alain de Botton. As someone pointed out, it is fun to say. I have never heard of the other two

Tim Tripp

Tim Ferriss, only because I have no idea who the other guys are and may not want to. Gosh there are far too many bastards in this world.

What's That Noise?

We need a plan, what de Botton do? An evil Alain de Botton.

Doll House

I would love to see more female gurus. The sausage-dominated coverage is the only thing preventing me from fully surrendering to the otherwise beautiful joy that is DTG. A few names that come to mind are Dr Ramani, Meghan Kelly, Erica Kirk, Candace Owens, Mel Robbins. Im tired and not very informed but the lack of female gurus is a bit sad

Christian Owens

I'm not sure there would be a single thing to say about Carr. Just clips of him talking. It's not like he's subtle about what he's doing.

Bobby Wayward

I actually like Jimmy Carrs comedy and hate whenever he talks about literally anything else.

Anjan Sarkar

Tim Ferris lacks the charisma of gurus while being full of it IMO; Jimmy certainly has charisma, especially to the Rogansphere, and Alain with the Norman name and toff accent has the airs that might appeal to different category of devotee
