I will not be the only one to point this out, but being immunocompromised is not and never was a reason not to have the covid vaccine. That's only an issue for live vaccines. None of the COVID vaccines were live.

BP

Guys there’s so many points I want to dispute in this episode, but I’m just so tired, so very very tired and I can’t be bothered. I feel like it’s always the BP show and I just want to retire to my little quiet library. Nah, great episode as always, very entertaining.

Clay Cobb

I started listening to this episode on my regular podcast app for some reason, and right in the middle of the enshitification conversation the episode became an advertisment for your Patreon. Something I already subscribe to. Ironic accident? Or blind admission of truth? Who can say.

Fishlyf

FYI Matt, Ethelred the Unready's moniker translates better as 'ill advised' so it might tell us more about Chris than you.

Unfitforpurpose

I don't care how you feel about someone, accusing them of writing Ready Player One is out of order.

Enchant-o-matic

Doctorow originally defined enshitification more narrowly: online platforms initially entice users to join with great service and then gradually make everything shittier as they leverage their monopoly for shareholders. It described the trajectory of Amazon, Facebook, etc. Trevor Noah definitely misrepresented it as generic nostalgia, and maybe Doctorow played along or has been watering it down himself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When Bunnings hit the UK we lived next door to the flagship branch. How they ever made money (wait, they didn't!) when they used to haul stuff all the way here from there is a mystery. We still have some fantastic raised veg beds, made in Aus out of very thick steel in our garden. £15 each reduced from £150 when they had a fire sale. They even flogged off the cafe equipment... The veg beds will almost certainly outlast us, take that Cory!

Jake Kortum

I found the Trevor Noah clip annoying as well, but I didn’t find some of the counterarguments of pointing out that technology has advanced or bootstrappy personal anecdotes particularly convincing or relevant Quality of life is certainly better across the board, but I took away from the example clip that the point is a feeling of malaise, a feeling of dissatisfaction despite the new novelties or varieties of choice available now. Matt gets to this a couple times before being snatched away by Chris northern irish fables

jss

Gary is ‘friends of the podcast’? 🤨

Bernt

I love starting the show with enthralling tales of middles aged extreme sport ventures. And I promise this is not sarcasm

Bernt

I had never heard of a pickle ball injury. Impressive

Salty John

Matt knows his son's age with a plus minus of 1 year

Stephen Cromwell

Count Binface isn't the only other candidate in the Clacton election. There are 34 but they're all loons of various stripes

Tristram Vahan Draper

It strikes me that the comparative quality of life is a lot like trying to push an air bubble caught under a sheet of plastic. As some problems vanish, new ones appear. I was born in 84, in the US, and when I was in school I never once worried I was going to be gunned down by a school shooter, for example. On the other hand, people 20 years younger than I did not grow up with the specter of HIV as the hidden doom that lurked behind every sexual encounter. Technology has solved so many issues that existed when I was a kid, but environmental catastrophy seemed much less certain. tl;dr is is very hard to tell if the average global shittyness has changed or not.

Bernt

"He's as mad as a cut snake" what a great Australian phrase.

Idan Ca

I have to say that Cory Doctorow imo is one of the good guys. I kinda feel bad he’s receiving the treatment usually reserved for real shitty idiots and malevolents. I think Trevor Noah did him a disservice in the intro

Linda Sears

It’s funny that both Matt and Chris felt superior to the older folks at their respective exercises and paid with injuries. Let that be a warning to you young whippersnappers when trying to outdo your elders.

Da Jay SwIzzle

I'm into vinyl AND lossless streaming 4k+ records on my shelves plus a digital collection of FLAC/WAV which I stream from my home computer anywhere in the world on a Plex server Tbh if you record vinyl with a great recorder it sounds pretty great on digital (DACs have improved a LOT last 20 years)

Karen 🇨🇦🇺🇸

I don’t think you need to do the land acknowledgments 🤣🤣🤣

Wouter Vermeyen

We have to remain fair to Hasan, he has been advocating for the Ukrainians to surrender to the Russian probably since before Euromaidan. It is not related to anything specific going on.

Chomagerider

This childish back and forth between Garry and Piers reminds me of this interview of Freddy Mercury that's going around on YouTube from time to time where Freddy freely talks about how rich he his and how much he loves spending money. So refreshing. And never seen anyone talk about being rich in such a charming way🤭

Joshua McMonagle-Ihasz

Wow, never thought Matt would have an uninformed take on our supermarkets. Cole's and woolies are ripping people off. They just lost an accc case for the marketing and fake sales practices (I suppose he did say they do dodgy practices) and btw for a supermarket they have the highest margins in the world, so yeah they are ripping us off

Karen 🇨🇦🇺🇸

You sometimes see those shorts where someone will ask cops or doctors “what’s one thing you wouldn’t let your kids do” and that’s Roblox. But I saw one where they asked ER doctors about one thing they wouldn’t let their parents do and they all said pickleball. Super injury sport.

Tom Kerwin

Agree with others that Doctorow’s real argument, as outlined in the book, is very much about the specific tech company strategy and the handful of legislation moments that enabled it - and so could unwind it. FWIW, I think he absolutely acknowledges that tech has done tons of good and improved lives on average, he’s just against companies having invented the crime “felony: contempt of business model” by leveraging a piece of digital copyright legislation from the 1980s to make it illegal to reverse engineer or mod increasing amounts of technology by sticking a chip in it with some protected software on it. While there are still companies out there that can “crack” your smart phone or mod your smart fridge, they are technically illegal and - at least in the US - face severe penalties. Worth looking at the recent John Deere ruling for an example of a company being forced to re-allow the secondary fix and mod market for their tractors. And oh! Vlad! I’ve also enjoyed some of his thinking and my soul collapsed a bit when you showed those telltale signs of the start of audience capture and gurudom. :( Gary on Piers Morgan was a shitshow. Did you see Zucman on TRIP and Rory’s meltdown and subsequent handwringing?

jss

No one has seemed to notice the big red flag 🚩 of Matt’s obvious self aggrandisement in giving himself a lofty title of Matt the Unready or whatever it was I think a secret decoding on Matt is warranted in light of this serious matter

George

As much as I enjoy Gary under the microscope, Piers Morgan is such a cataclysmically tedious prick that it was impossible not to sympathise with Gary

Shambles

Richard Murphy, that got a mention, is really excellent. He's already suggested 2 or 3 different models that would raise more taxes more efficiently than anything Gary has suggested. He also does quite clear explainers of complicated economics stuff.

J Scott

Matt said you guys should reserve a separate category for super-predictors like Jiang. I think we should call it a "clairvoyance-complex"

Mark Duffy

Listening to Hasan’s voice destroys more brain cells than any drug.

Conor McGee

I think Gary should get tested for toxic mould.

James P.

It'd be cool to hear a deeper dive on your AI workflows and best practices

Sam Wells

Cassette tapes had good sound quality? Maybe I had a bad stereo back before the turn of the century when I was listening to tapes.

Paul Ditta

I can’t bring myself to listen to Piers Moron.

Rich F

Hasans advice to Ukraine. Just... Got a question now. Have Lex and Hasan cross-pollinated yet? Theyre both *actively* pro-kremlin, with the caveat that theyre both *potentially* stupid enough to believe their own voices while they're denying that.

Nancy Hale

Man, I wish Count Binface had an American cousin. But then there’s something uniquely British about his whole premise that just doesn’t translate here. Oh well.

MoooinkForYourSupper

I see the YouTube comments are pretty hard on Piers - it was a bad misstep and entirely his own fault.

JustMe

Actually I think Trevor’s interpretation is ridiculously simplistic of what Doctorow is referring to with enshittification. I don’t find any glorification of the past as in it such as ‘appliances don’t last as long’. And he’ll remind people that improvement in the system is the result of labor unions and anti-trust law, not because you cancelled your Paramount + subscription (ala Scott Galloway).

Maytree

The discussion on AI is just demonstrative that AI is not “just a neutral tool”. I’ve come to the same practices, but basically we don’t have LLMs that trend towards objectivity/neutrality, which means 99 percent of people have to learn new skills to be able to use it wisely, and it’s understandable that they don’t feel the need to do that.

Stan Law

Elon musk doesn't have to be worth, himself personally, a trillion dollars for Tesla and Space X to exist. The companies would still exist if he personally divested and gave his wealth to charity.

Billie Morris

Sorry, but Matt’s take on the australian supermarket duopoly is really bad. Their overall profit margin of between 2 and 3% is low (but the highest in the world??) but doesn’t represent the mark ups they are making on the goods they sell. Those are much higher. The reason people are upset is that they increased their prices beyond the rate of inflation during the pandemic (and made record profits), which prompted the government to introduce new laws to stop price gouging (which didn’t exist prior). Not to mention the ACCC cases they both just lost. I agree with the idea that people think that things are worse but this a poor example to use because there were other reasons why people were paying more at the checkout beyond normal economic circumstances. Time to take of those rose tinted liberal complacency glasses ;)

The 'kicked in the head by a horse' bit is just perfect - makes me laugh every time I hear it
