Greetings Patrons,

I was working on a new collaboration with a mapmaker, when suddenly I thought about exporting sound effects (think : a door opening, a laser rifle shot, a trap trigger, etc.)

Until now, I was kind of against that idea, as my ambiences to-do list is already GIGANTIC and I feared to clutter it even more with specific SFX. However, I thought that instead of focusing on them when I work on a new pack, I could simply be opportunistic. What does that mean ?

When I work on a new ambiences pack, I listen to hundreds of SFX, instruments and such. Not all of them end on a piece, most are discarded. But sometimes, while meddling with these sounds, I think "Oh, that can't be used for a whole ambience, but that sounds cool as an effect!". Then I could simply export these SFX or make variants of them.

It certainly represents a bit more work (+10-20% for each pack), but it's a cost I'm definitely ready to accept (otherwise I wouldn't notify you with that post). Would that represents something useful for you ?

To me as an artist, it's also a way to keep growing and learning new things, as I believe one needs to reinvent himself all the time to stay on the top.

Just to make things clear : I won't replace ambiences/music packs by SFX packs. It's closer to a simple "more content" option. I don't know for which tiers though. It's just a general idea.

Feedback welcome!

Thank you for your patronage

Michael

EDIT: Just to make things clearer, I won't simply share what comes out of SFX packs I buy (that would be illegal). I mean creating new SFX by heavily reworking them/merging sounds together, etc. So completely new sounds.

As a podcaster who likes using sfx, I would be interested to see what you had in store.

This is something that would be super useful to me - I would welcome it with open arms!

Yes indeed, for podcasters it may improve immersion even more!

Besides using ambiance and music tracks while running my D&D sessions, I also use SFX. Unfortunately I have very few of these, so I'd be really appreciative of this extra content. As you look at a directory structure, please consider separating modern and sci-fi from fantasy SFX...so splitting SFX by genre is what I'm asking. Thanks!!!

Vel'Cheran

That would be very cool. I recently used SFX in a RPG session and my players enjoyed it. It can add an element of surprise or help immersion.

I already answered on Discord, but I rewrite it in case someone reads your message : Yes definitely! :)

I'm quite into SFX. That being sad, I find many sounds that sources like Syrinscape come up with are quite unnecessary. I don't need an effect for clinging glasses in a tavern or scrumbling parchment. It takes more time to make that effect work than it is in play. SFX should make a real impact on the game, being iconic and meaningful. Things like howling wolves and screaming nazgules. Or even funny stuff like a sad trombone or the Wilhelm scream.

Thank you for your feedback. You raise a very good point, and we share the same mindset. I don't see the point of cluttering your folders with thousands of everyday sounds. I'll focus on meaningful things. The only exception to that rule would be : If I'm doing a collaboration with a mapmaker or a writer for scenario, and that "everyday sound" is important in that setting, then I may export it. But I think it makes sense.

I agree. I love SFX for spells, wildlife, monsters, traps, etc. and use them a lot. What I don't have use for are split-second SFX that take more time to find and play than they last. I don't know how many times I have seen someone release a pack of "weapon sounds": 'sword hits shield', 'arrow strike', 'axe strikes flesh', etc. These aren't really useful to me as a DM because I'm not going to use the appropriate 'weapon hits X' every time something hits during a combat encounter. That's a level of immersion I just don't think is practical, and would probably be more annoying to the players rather than immersive.

Rob Leonard

Michael, would it be useful to you at all to have an 'SFX Suggestions' channel in Discord (similar to the one for ambiences)? I'd appreciate being able to post an idea there when I think of one while DM'ing.

MichaelGhelfi

Done! That's definitely a good idea (again). Thank you. However, don't expect all propositions to be made though. I'm sure you know it (but to make it clear in case someone reads that comment).

Rob Leonard

Of course...it's just a wish list. ;) Thanks!
