I think it’s interesting that you, being TV-savvy, immediately went “oh no, happy couple - someone’s gonna die.” That trope basically started in medical TV with this episode. And was THE watercooler episode of early 1995. It actually won a bunch of Emmys and is seen as a real turning point for ER, both in quality and in how it used failure to develop its characters. Mark’s usually the steady, competent one, the senior resident everyone trusts, so watching him have this colossal failure. Partly his own mistakes (like missing the patient’s pre-eclampsia) and partly bad luck (the OB not showing, the baby’s position, etc.) makes it hit even harder.

It’s amazing how ahead of its time this show is and truly is such a staple. I wish I knew it was like this so much sooner, but also glad that I didn’t, because now I get to watch it with you and everyone lol

Bad luck? I totally blame OB for most of this thing. That's the reason we have specialists in different areas and why the ER doesn't just take care of everything from beginning to end. I hate that coburn soo much. She comes in screaming that why didn't he call OB - when he called them 100 times of the span of a few hours and no one showed up. I felt so bad for Mark. No offense to Susan, but if Mark went home when he was supposed to, both the baby and the mother would have been dead - simply because she wouldn't have had the experience to perform a cesarian.
