The benefit of subtitles even when listening to a dub imo - you don’t have to spend 10 minutes trying to figure out a characters name or what someone said… you can just read it! His name is Stark and they pronounce it with a somewhat German accent

Stark is how a cowardly character is meant to be written. Zenitsu never faces his fears unless he's cornered while Stark acts despite his fears to overcome them.

I hear what you're saying, but I am honestly SO SICK of this comparison cause all people do with it is badmouth Zenitsu. I get it, Stark is better, but that doesn't make Zenitsu a bad character. You don't have to bring one character down in order to praise another. 😤 Sorry if you think this is directed to you, I've just needed to rant about this for a while.

Best boy Stark is here!! I love the way this show tackles certain judgements (not qualities, mind you, judgements) like “coward” and “fraud”. A huge part of this show to me is getting the characters to explore different narrative interpretations about themselves and each other, not just in Frieren’s case. Super excited for the next reaction 😊

The part with flamme "begging for her life" is more so just a funny and dumb implication on her personality. Not that she actually always begged for her life. Its just more so about her personality and how she liked to act if you get what I mean. That part can throw you off a bit especially in the english dub.

I'd love VM too, but they're a bit overbooked right for now. Probably next year sometime tho. Arcane S2 is almost done, they want to do something short afterwards, then Invincible. My Hero Aca is ending soon too, Kaiju Nr8 is pretty short as well, so there's going to be a rotation of shows.

Zenitsu is super annoying and cowardly. You will find out Stark is infinitely better than Zenitsu as a character. Just my opinion though. I, like many other people, don't like demon slayer so I am a bit biased either way. Although everyone generally agrees and videos have even been made on youtube about why Stark is a better version of zenitsu in every way possible

We’ve seen the cowardly trope everywhere in media, the one you know most of all is probably Zenitsu. You will come to realize that Stark is zenitsu but with INFINITE better writing and development

I hate that Stark gets compared to Zenitsu. Stark is more of a man than Zenitsu can ever be, Stark's cowardice is written with purpose, he's super skilled but his fears hold him back, he lacks resolve, he doesn't need a stupid plot point like "he's only good when asleep" to overcome the difficulties he faces.

The part about her master Flamme begging for her life often when alive is explained more in further flashbacks. The shows writing is so so good that pretty everything gets explained at some point.

The thing about this kind of talk that annoyed me the most is that it's not an apt comparison. Demon Slayer and Frieren are vastly different stories; the former is plot focused and driven while the latter is character focused and driven. Demon Slayer "objectively" doesn't have more well-written characters because it's not trying to, and that's okay. Not every aspect of every show needs to.be measured against one another just cause they resemble each other on the surface. Bottom line is; yes, Zenitsu of Demon Slayer is not as well-written as Stark of Frieren, but SO WHAT?

04:12 - This confused me too when I was first watching. They always mean their life so far. Fern spent half her life so far with Frieren, since she met her as a child. Frieren spent 1/100th of her life so far with the party of heroes - 10 years times 100 is 1000 so she is somewhere around a thousand years old. It can be confusing since Flamme, Frieren's master, lived a "thousand years ago" which is not an exact number, just a rough estimate when they say it in ep4, so Frieren would be at the end of her life if 10 years is 1/100th of her total lifespan. But it obviously isn't the case. She acts rather young sometimes.

Stark isn't even that cowardly all things considered. I mean, Fern also ran from the dragon scared for her life and refused to play 'tag' with it like Frieren suggested. He just lacks battle experience, even later on when he has cowardly scenes, they're not that unreasonable, except for a few gags here and there.

I gave up on Demon Slayer after like 2 episodes, it just wasn't for me. However I understand why a lot of people like it, and I saw some clips here and there online with fights and they look really pretty, so I get the hype around it. The only anime that legitimately made me upset, is Solo Leveling. Like, I managed to finish the season and I was just angry at the end of it, it was a legitimate hate-watch, I don't think I've ever hate-watched anything before or after XD It's the difference between a show that you know is good but it's just not for you, and a show that you think could have been great, and all you see is missed opportunities and mistakes.

I think she was actually begging for her life. We never really get context and I don't want to spoil anything here in case they read a comment, but basically it's about the tactic that Frieren and Flamme have used. It's possible she liked adding a bit of flair before revealing her trick card so to speak.

Fun fact - The Einsam, the ghost monster, the name means 'lonely' in German, which fits, because it conjures illusions of dead loved ones. You could say it preys on loneliness.

I recently did a rewatch of demon slayer and am now rewatching this series, I don't think this is a fair exploration of zenitsus character. I think stark is more likeable, I don't agree that he's significantly better written. Zenitsu never chose to fight, he hadn't even chosen to be a demon slayer. But for the sake of others he locked in every step of the way even from the first time we see him after final selection. He took a beating from inosuke to protect nezuko, just because he knew she was important to tanjiro. He wasn't asleep when he did that. He wasn't asleep when he defended the girl in the pleasure house during entertainment district arc. Reducing him to just "good when asleep" is a disservice.
