Spoiler alert, everyone in the JAKDF is incredibly gay. The anime actually cranked Kikoru's gay up here, it's impressive.

The conversation at the end between Kafka and Hoshino sold me hard on his character. Objectively the weakest person to ever enter the Defense Force just made a declaration of rivalry against one of its strongest members. Hoshino could have laughed in his face, not even seriously being an asshole but as either a motivator or trying to provoke him into revealing his connection to the F9.8. He also could have said "Okay, cool, you're fired" because that's what would happen in a lot of workplaces if you told your boss you were gunning for his job. Instead Hoshino hands Kafka the keys so he can get extra training in and accepts him as a rival. I love him he's such a good dude.
