Yuma Nanami

So the Poachers at the beginning would have been a Lizardfolk race.

Contrastjd

It's probably a lizardfolk

Uscmiller22

Desperately want you guys to react to the “Table to Screen” moments that compare the show to how the live play went. The moments in these last two episodes in particular are amazing.

HBelmont67

Between the dungeon setting and Vax's speed and use of daggers, I got some Jinwoo Solo Leveling vibes from this fight on rewatch.

Law

Did you two notice Keyleth looking feral over Vax after killing the monster?

KomoUpNorth

It's a Lizardfolk, Yes in d&d resurrection is trivial especially for the level of the party, that being said Mercer made his own rules for brining characters back. We see clearly with Vax that his deal has a cost.

HBelmont67

I was literally about to comment about her face at 22:36. 🫦🤣

Law

She giving “slam me like that~” 😂

HBelmont67

Who would win in a fight: Trinket the bear, or Bakko, Mina's white tiger from Kaiju No. 8? 🐻 ⚔️🐯

Suplee215

Even with the ritual rules Matt uses it is still somewhat trivia. Which works for a game.

StorytellerDave

In-game the vestiges all basically level up. They have 3 stages and you get more powers the higher they go. That said they are not quite as impressive in-game as they are in the show, Matt knows to balance items well enough.

Ωmegax

Petrification is, in a lot of cases, not a concentration spells. In the case of this creature, like a lot of Beholder, its an innate ability (just like breathing elemental for dragons). It act more like a curse when applied. Reversal depends afterwards, but in general you need to cast Remove Curse to break it, after too long it can become permanent if the caster is not destroyed.

Reese esponge

In critical role they call the necklace the pokeball

HBelmont67

"Trinket, I choose you!" 😂

cryptc

true, but it also means that you're never guaranteed to be able to be brought back, so a player could be killed and not return.

cryptc

iirc, the armor didn't actually grant speed in the campaign, but he was always using Boots of Speed for having lots of movement and attacks, so I think this is more a way to in-world explanation of his D&D powers... they had a lot more magical items in the game, but I like that they didn't want to spend too much time explaining each item (although they also have gone the other way, with the "Polymorph Scroll" Scanlan got, which in campaign was just a spell he could cast)

silentinfinity

I'm so excited to get to episode 10 though this is a great one.

HBelmont67

Are they not Draconian? That's a race in this show?

Suplee215

Could be. But that never actually happened. In 10 years of critical role the only time perma death happened is when resurrection was off the table. There hasn't been a failed ritual yet. And im not saying that's a bad thing. I just love how the show adapted the deaths a lot and make death feels more of a legit risk.

Suplee215

The armor is just a defensive item in game at first. The vestigages do grow more powerful over time but all the deathwalker ward does is defense. They gave it speed which Vex gets from another item because it is easier to visually show that. If I remember the deathwalkers ward gives +1 to ac (goes up) plus gives you resistance to any damages type you wish and this can be changed at dawn and advantage on death saving throws.

HBelmont67

I'm psyched for next episode. One of the best in the series. 🔥

Suplee215

I dont think this is a spoiler and it isnt directly said in the show si far and they may or may bit change it. But in the campaigns, the consquence of the Calamity was the gods left the mortal plane. Before the calamity the gods were literally walking the earth. Now they dont. You can still talk to them and feel their influence and stuff.

StorytellerDave

My bet is on the tiger. If it were a Polar bear then maybe.

KomoUpNorth

Hey man thats kinda spoilery

Dylan The Bear

I think the hunter that looks like a velociraptor at the start is a lizardfolk?

SWTobito

Fun fact: the iconography for the Matron of Ravens are not just ravens but these golden strings of fate. Both of these iconographies have been in the intro for Vox Machina since the beginning.

Geese

The Matron of Ravens was originally pretty 1 to 1 with the Raven Queen from the Forgotten Realms lore, which if anyone doesn't know is kind of the 'standard' setting that Wizards of the Coast use, at least for 5e. The Raven Queen is a Goddess of Death and Fate primarily, but she has other domains as well. If we roll it even further back, the Raven Queen is pretty clearly based on The Morrigan from Celtic mythology, who also used Raven iconography and had domains of both death and fate, but she was more of a war goddess than either the Raven Queen or the Matron of Ravens.

SWTobito

It's really interesting that Vax's lesson to become the champion was "whatever happens, it's out of our control". It's basically telling him "you work for the Raven Queen now, no more messing with a person's death".

Suplee215

I dont play Skyrim so not sure. Basically used to be a lot more like Greek myths or Norse where the gods walked among us. The calamity was literally a war between the gods on earth though and the good gods then created a barrier to prevent gods from returning to exandria in order to prevent another calamity that may wipe out mortals. The calamity was a thousand year long war that saw the near extinction of mortals with only a single city (vassleheim) surviving it. Which is part of why the city is so confident the dragons wont be a threat as the city stood. All this info is just background info. Being careful to not get into any plots.

Suplee215

I apperiate the concern but it seems pretty vague and the show does not follow the campaigns perfectly either, especially in regards to death.

StorytellerDave

Kenny - Yeah kinda like Aedra. You can get their blessings and talk to them, but that's about it. And kinda like the daedra the 'betrayer gods' are all sealed in their own domains too, and unlike Skyrim where Daedra are just messing with people non-stop, the betrayer gods influence is also limited to the same stuff the prime deities can do - Give blessings and talk to whomever wishes to commune with them. Vestiges like the armor Vax got were made by a god during the Calamity and imbued with their powers. I think each god has at least one, some more than one, and yes, the betrayers also have vestiges, not just the prime deities. Matt Mercer made a book with the vestiges, even ones that never showed up in any of the campaigns.

HBelmont67

Without spoiling the manga, I can affirm that you're absolutely correct. Heck, I don't even think a polar bear could take Bakko down. That tiger is GNARLY.

Robert Bonfante

Episode 10 is a good one and a lot of people seem to love it -- my favorites are 3 - 6 and I agree about episode 5 completely.

Robert Bonfante

Because of copyright, the creature Zahra summoned was a pseudo-beholder. CR couldn't use the original beholder design as that is property of WOTC.

Robert Bonfante

I don't think this is spoiler information, but a lore drop. But if there are spoilers in here, Critters let me know. The gods that Vax saw in his vision of the Calamity. The three giant ones, from left to right were, Pelor the Dawn Father, Sehanine the Moon Weaver, and Torog the Crawling King. In the second shot -- Ioun, the Knowing Mistress, and Sarenrae the Everlight (good eye, Kenny!)

Robert Bonfante

Outside of fantasy, a tiger would be outclassed by grizzlies, Kodiaks and polar bears. A tiger would win against any other sub-species and big tigers, like Siberian tigers, actively prey on sloth and Asiatic black bears.

sophiasmilez

Today was my first time playing DND with my cousins. I had so much fun playing my character!

Andrew Blades

Kenny, Kaiju No. 8 season 2 just started. I was wondering if you guys were planning on reacting to it when a slot opens?

HamboneKablooey

One thing they did with the armor in the show that wasn't in the game was it giving Vax super-speed. Instead, in the game, he had a magic item called "Boots of Haste" which were a mashup of the "Boots of Speed" from Pathfinder, which they originally played before streaming, and the "Boots of Speed" from D&D 5e, which ABSOLUTELY DID NOT SCALE PROPERLY. Like, they were seriously busted, they let him cast Haste on himself, meaning double movement speed, a +2 bonus to Armor Class, advantage on Dex saves, and an extra action on each turn. He could activate this as a bonus action, without needing concentration (meaning it always lasted 1 minute, or 10 in-game rounds), AND you didn't get the drawback that Haste normally applies after it ends, which is being unable to move or take actions until your next turn. Interestingly, this is where the popular CR catchphrase: Dagger, Dagger, Dagger comes from, because this little shit could attack 3 TIMES on his next turn.

HBelmont67

It didn't start exactly. What you saw was a bonus episode. Season two won't start in full till the 19th. Regardless, I too hope they'll start it as it airs, as it might be a simuldub like the first season was, so they won't have to wait for the dub.

Ellie

Fun fact: the title of this episode is a nod to one of vax/liam’s catchphrases that he said a lot in the campaign. He became notorious for having a very serious conversation/saying something very dramatic and then leaving before things were really resolved by saying “and I walk away”

wanira 11

Montana getting emotional over baby trinket 🥺

Andrew Blades

Ah gotcha. A buddy of mine had mentioned it to me so I assumed it was in full swing.

HBelmont67

That person teased at the end was Ripley, BTW

HBelmont67

I was getting Aangry flashbacks when she said "they muzzled him?!"

wanira 11

Kash's "HOLY SHIT, I AM AMAZING." never fails to make me laugh, the delivery is amazing 😂

HBelmont67

Kash is actually a solid dude. 😅 Also, I had no idea he was voiced by Ron Stoppable.

wanira 11

He is my favourite side character in this show

wanira 11

Fun fact: The vestige was originally meant for Percy, but as things went Mercer eventually decided that Vax was going to be the champion

Wolfarick

You guys talking about Trinket being able to go into a locket to be safe is basically how it worked in the campaign at the table! Matt made it so that whenever Trinket went unconscious within range, he’d automatically go into the necklace that way he wouldn’t die in battle. Laura (Vex’s player) basically almost never wanted to Trinket into battle because she was always afraid of Trinket dying (which, valid lmao), so the necklace allowed her to take him into battle without the fear

HBelmont67

I've never really thought much of the side cast cause the main cast is so amazing. If I had to pick a favorite side character, it'd probably be Cassandra.

StorytellerDave

Allura and Kima are my favourite dynamic duo tbh. I love those two.

StorytellerDave

Nope not draconian, those are dragon people. Dinosaur people are lizardfolk. Similar, but different. Kinda like halflings and gnomes both being small and looking similar-ish, but they have differences

HBelmont67

(gasp) More than Grog and Pike?? 😮

Ebronics

and cuz they kept having to leave trinket outside gates, cities, and castles

Ebronics

yeah. he said he really liiked playing Kash (both in the actual play and in the show) cuz it was the first VA job where he got to curse lol

Ebronics

pretty sure that was a copyright safe version of a beholder lol. the same way the Matron of Raven's is the copyright safe version of the Raven Queen from D&D

SonofHope

Raptor dude at beginning is a lizard folk, their my favorite race to play in D&D/pathfinder, they can eat their meat raw, so I'm surprised it bothered skinning the rodent

dannydarko27

I like how in the last ep you mentioned you're a Rogue/Paladin and this ep the Rogue ends up becoming the champion for the god of death aka multiclassing into Paladin lol

demonic-myst

He sold his soul to a god of death the raven wueen tho is nit evil in dnd she is a neutral god she cares about balance she colects secrets snd harvests souls she hates and here are her comabdments DEATH IS THE NATURAL END OF LIFE. GRIEVE THE FALLEN, BUT DO NOT PITY THEM. EXULT IN THE TIME THAT THEY WERE GRANTED. THE PATH OF FATE IS SACROSANCT. THOSE WHO PRIDEFULLY CAST OFF DESTINY MUST BE PUNISHED. UNDEATH IS AN ATROCITY. DEATH IS TOO GOOD A PUNISHMENT FOR THOSE WHO PERVERT THE RIGHTFUL TRANSITION OF THE SOUL.

demonic-myst

The creature was a refesign in the campaign it was a beholder
