Those Travis and Laura cameos with Fjord and Jester in the Hall of Mirrors were SO good. This is how you know this series is a passion project. ❤️‍🔥

wanira 11

"Omg he's tall as shit!" Lmao

wanira 11

How does Taliesin always have the hottest characters 😂 they're always my favourites too (Percy, Molly)

wanira 11

Fun fact: The girl who voices Toya with the devil toad is no one other than Auliʻi Cravalho who voices Moana! The amount of connections these voice actors have in the industry is mind boggling 😂 so many legends doing guest appearances Edit: just noticed Montana got it hahah

Erin Ryan

Kenny being shocked that he never asked montanah what her favorite shape was as if its common question lol

HBelmont67

That makes THREE Disney princesses in this cast. ✨ 🏰

HBelmont67

Is that a thing? Are we supposed to have a favorite shape? 😅

wanira 11

At 32:42 is a Trinket easter egg :)

wanira 11

Fjord failing the carnival strength game is a joke referencing his strength stat in the game being so low compared to everyone else's

Ferret

Since you've got the rest of the party's classes so far, Jester's a Trickery cleric.

Suplee215

I think youre being too dnd rules literal. Jester's lollipop is a take on spiritual weapon as shes a cleric. Alsonfun fact, Gustuv survives in the camapign but is part of a plot line they never return to so they just killed him off for the impact

HBelmont67

They reference that a LOT in this first season. 😂

HBelmont67

Welcome aboard that Fjord ship, Kenny and Monty! 🏴‍☠️🛳️

HBelmont67

Tal also gets the original classes. Like, I believe Percy and Molly were the basis for Artificer and Bloodhunter, respectfully.

HBelmont67

Definition of Chaotic Good 😂

HBelmont67

Molly is SUCH a great character. His dialogue and Talesin's vocal performance make him incredibly intriguing and likable right off the bat.

Rainbae

The favorite shape conversation is why I sub to the patreon

Geo23

After the rest of strength Jester won, there were some Vox Machina Easter eggs on the form of game prizes: one of Trinket, Grog, Pike, and Percy

zzsaturn

I think it’s only that he had a lower strength stat than Jester, in the campaign his str stat was higher than Molly Caleb and Beau

Rainbae

Kenny said Vox Machina before the review

Cyan_Sky9135

(possible spoiler incoming, so mods if you delete this thats fine with me) Do they even get an archer/ranger? Its been bugging me lately. I thought that was one of those things thats required, or strongly suggested for any DnD campaign 🤔. Of course thats not to say someone may part ranger or they meet someone who is but for the moment there isnt one, as far as I know. If there is one then egg on my face😅

Law

Beau is just Korra with a license to swear

David L

Molly was definitely a prototype Bloodhunter, since the class was made for specifically for the character and then expanded upon after seeing what did/didn't work for him. I doubt Percy has anything to do with Artificer, since that's not a Mercer original and has been around since 3.5e Eberron. Percy was a fighter-gunslinger subclass, though it might be inspired from Artificer of the past.

David L

It's also important to note that unlike with LoVM, The Mighty Nein is a lot more well designed to tell a story using the campaign as the blueprint instead of just trying to animate the stuff that happened. They started to do that more as the VM show went on but this one takes it to a whole different level.

Suplee215

Yup. Part of thatis the narritive of the mighty nein begins at the beginning and they are comfortable theyll have multiple seasons whereas with Vox the first couple seasons were wary to do long set up and just getting there. I think this first 3 episodes is a good example. We knew nothing about the cobalt sol, Beau was just a runaway and no whispers of war or anything. But the way they shortened it was pretty damn good.

zzsaturn

Fjord is the only Warlock, Jester is a Cleric of the trickery domain (we’ve seen her heal and the giant lollipop is her spiritual weapon) and Caleb is in fact a wizard. And obviously y’all know Beau, Nott and Molly’s classes.

D Gai

Exandria is the world, Tal'dorei (LOTVM) and Wildemount(MN) are continents in Exandria

HBelmont67

Also Yasha. She's pretty self-explanatory.

HBelmont67

I mean, Nott uses a crossbow. Does she count as a rogue/ranger?

Suplee215

Not sure where that advice comes from. Ranger is classic in dnd but it isnt part of the classic build. The classic dnd party is a fighter, rogue, cleric, and wizard. Dnd 5e tried to update this amd build it into game design and it is a decent model, replacing the classes with groups warrior, skill monkey, healer, and mage woth warrior being filled out with fighter, barbarian or monk, mage by wizard, sorcerer or warlock and so on. That said, you do want someone with range attacks in dnd because not every enemy gets close. Between mighty nein has 1 obvious range person in Nott. But wizards tend to attack at range too so caleb helps there. And jester can cast many spells at range. I will probably count caleb amd jester as half for range fighters. Fjord is a warlock and they secretly are archers. Eldritch blast has a range of 120 feet and gives you up to 4 attacks a turn. Mighty nein is very melee focused but fjord and Nott are very good st range witj fjord being a very good switch hitter who can do both and the soell casters helping.

confetti dragon

I think parallelogram does count as a shape because you can have one that isn't a rhombus, rectangle or square

HBelmont67

Of course it counts as a shape. Who said otherwise??

Loot

"Ooh, pick a shape... NOT THAT ONE!" Lol

Kuda

caleb is a wizard of the school of transmutation

Braden Jackson

Man Molly is by far my favorite in the show

Phantom Egg

I appreciate you guys not jumping into the blame game like other reactors with ruining the carnival. Yes, its very much Beau, Caleb, and Nott's fault (mainly Nott for stealing the stone just cause) but a lot of people don't consider how MASSIVELY irresponsible it is to bring a beast like the Devil Toad to a carnival like that with open access to the audience no matter how much control you think you have.

Phantom Egg

You honestly don't NEED any particular class for a party in DnD. The only one thats usually highly suggested is a cleric for obvious reasons. The advantage of a ranger is of course ranged attacks and survival/tracking skills. From memory a couple of the members of the party have a decent bonus to survival and Caleb, Nott, Jester, and Fjord all have access to ranged spells or Nott's crossbow.

brina_kitten

Jester: This is my bestie the traveler who's a god. Kenny: Is she a creation Bard? lol

Timothy Heck

Could also be a reference to the time he tried to play a carnival sandbag-tossing game and rolled 3 natural 1's in a row lol

Timothy Heck

Not just Trinket! Look at the others! :)

Timothy Heck

Everyone needs to have a favorite color, shape, and dinosaur!

Timothy Heck

I might be wrong, but it looks like in this universe they characterize half-orcs as having the two-toned skin. Fjord and the circus strongman (Bo the Breaker) both are two shades of green, while the bigger, more brutish guys that tried to pick a fight were just a solid color

Timothy Heck

I love the moment of Fjord jumping in to fight, it gets me a little choked up! "Steady there now, son. It's all right. Trust me." This season has a great thematic throughline of "who will you be?" (like the previous episode's name and the song The Ruby of the Sea was singing), we've seen most of the characters grappling with that question, Fjord especially. And in this moment we see Fjord decide to be brave and trustworthy. Really, it's a fantastic theme for the start of a show based on a game with character creation and role-playing lol

Rae ✨

Everyone else has already said most of what i'm thinking, but I'm glad you guys commented on the intro music!! It's really similar to the original music they used during this campaign which I was super excited about when it came out bc that song has so much sentimental value to me lol

Suplee215

I yhink cleric is overly dedicated to healer role personally. You can build a druid and bard as pretty dedicated healers. Even archetypes of warlock and sorcerer fulfills most of the need. Even a paladin works just as well if they dedicate to healer.

Timothy Heck

Yes!! It’s such a good song! It’s called “Welcome to Wildemount” by Colm R. McGuiness, if others wanted to look it up. Every episode of the campaign has a montage of fanart during the break and it’s the song that plays during it. I watch it every time (currently on episode 79) so it’s permanently in my brain and sentimental now too lol. I showed it to my musician sister and she was surprised how good it is based on my pitch of “fan-made song that the show pays homage to” lol. Colm does incredible work, it’s so cool that they decided to use it for the show.

Timothy Heck

True, though I think a lot of the fun of these shows is guessing what's straight out of the campaign and what's embellished for the different medium. Most of it is tweaked yeah, but a lot of the best lines and moments come directly from the original

Suplee215

Thats fair. I just think things like spiritual weapon isnt going be guessed from book and talking about how warlocks work and assuming that only 1 thing can happen to lose power is throwing a red herring where one wasn't there. Its a great adaption thougg

patricia jimjimcherie

Percy is a fighter gunslinger, which didn’t exist in DND, so Matthew homebrewed it with Tal, adapting it from Pathfinder. Matthew created Bloodhunter with Tal as well. I actually play one of Matt’s subclasses as well in my own campaign: Fighter Echo Knight which was created specifically for the Kryn Dynasty, but my character is a Shadar-Kai elf rather than a drow. Matthew creates pretty interesting subclasses, especially Echo Knight.

HBelmont67

I clocked her as a cleric the second she started talking about the Traveler lol

RED

Wizards in dnd need to have their spell book to write down and remember spells but if they loose that spell book they loose access to their spells essentially forgetting them

HBelmont67

Navy blue, TBD, velociraptor

HamboneKablooey

The scene with the hammer game is a reference to the campaign, Jester despite being a Cleric has like the second highest strength score in the party. Jester is canonically buff.

HamboneKablooey

Jester is a fun character because while she is technically a Cleric, technically, Laura sort of played her more akin to a Warlock because that was what she originally planned to be. Then Travis thought Warlock sounded cool and wanted to try it, so Laura switched Jester to a Cleric. She treats the Traveler more as a Warlock Patron than an actual God to be worshipped. Also, that lollipop is her casting the spell Spiritual Weapon. Also also, if you want to know Mollymauk's class, he's a Blood Hunter, which is an original class created by Matt Mercer. It was originally created as a witch hunter class for a one-shot with Vin Diesel when he had a movie coming out, and Matt eventually developed it into a full class for his world.

𝖐𝖆𝖙𝖘𝖚𝖐𝖎 𝖇𝖆𝖐𝖚𝖌𝖔𝖆𝖙

Wait, Molly's kinda.. 😏 No but foreeal I think he's my second favorite so far, first being the Caleb and Knott duo lol. Beau is surprisingly my third favorite. I wouldn't have pegged that for me since Korra kinda irked me for the first two or three seasons 😅 but I like this version apparently? Weird.

David L

Honestly if we are talking just power gaming having a dedicated healer isn't even all that great in 5E. The game design is much more favorable to just making the enemies dead quicker, rather than trying to spend time negating their damage. It's really more of a legacy of the old dungeon crawler days when healing was hard and slow, much more survival based gameplay, so magic healing was vastly superior. This is also where rangers shine. With the modern game being way more heroic action focused, having a dedicated healer is a crutch more often than not, at least in my experience. I've run countless combats where the players have some big enemy on like 1-2 hits from dead and are running around panicking about heals rather than just finishing the damn thing off.

Geese

Big fan of this show, the mighty nein is my favorite campaign Critical Role has done so far. Super hype that you guys are watching it now, and glad you seem to be enjoying it so far. I think the characters in campaign 2 are super interesting because they are all such deeply flawed people, but in different and interesting ways. Caleb was always my personal favorite but I really love the whole party and I'm super psyched theyre getting animated!

HBelmont67

Molly's "dandy as a de Rolo" line is so meta. Props to Montana for catching it. 😂

HBelmont67

Female Fjord, tho 👀

dannydarko27

Lol the random favorite shape moment was cute af. Side note: parallelograms, squares, rectangles, rhombi etc. are shapes in the quadrilateral category

HBelmont67

Montana referred to Caleb as "Matt Mercer's character." She knows that's Liam, aka Vax, now right?

HBelmont67

Jester was definitely a "he said no pickles" type girlfriend in that scene, and we love her for it. 😊

Mythic.Rob

a pentagon in a pentagon, kenny is sublimating his enjoyment of FMAB

JaySpotTx

If you ever re-watch the epi, look at all the easter eggs in the stuffed animals: Trinket, Pike, Grog, etc. Also, the wine that Molly gives the female acrobat is Courage, the same wine Percy had when he went to talk to Vex which lead to ummm that scene in LoVM... The backgrounds have SOOO many references. Another fun review!
