A little extra info on the apothecary diaries for you guys. • It’s based in a fictional Chinese ming dynasty era. The palace is based on the forbidden city in Beijing • it actually started as a light novel series written by a woman called Natsu Hyuuga and has two ongoing manga series. There are 16 novels as of now and each season has covered two books per season so we have a lot of story to tell… • everything is connected in this series even the small details, keep a close eye on everything • it has been confirmed for season 3 🎉 Enjoy watching you guys this is one of my favourites!!

Yeah, Maomao's nonchalant attitude seems to originate from the lack of power/agency in certain situations - If I can't do anything about it, why bother worrying? There's actually a really interesting contrast with Frieren, because Frieren is extremely powerful, not much can truly pose a danger to her, she's also very old and has seen a lot, there's not a lot of surprises left in the world for her, so she's very nonchalant as a result of her power and knowledge, because there's not a lot that can affect her. Whereas Maomao is kinda the opposite, she has very little power and is often a whim away from death, and though knowledgeable, she is very young still, she is nonchalant as a result of her lack of power, because there's not a lot that she can affect. Of course as always with stories, things change over the course of their progression, but there's a very interesting difference between where these two ladies start out at the beginning of their shows.

Also I'd argue this story tends to be rather straightforward with it's setups and payoffs. Some foreshadowing is more subtle than others, but I wouldn't say it's ever trying to trick the viewer.

I feel violent shows like Vinland are obviously adult, where shows with cute characters and romance are easy to miscategorize at first glance

I dunno 🤔 I mean a lot of Shonen are violent but not Seinen. I think season 2 is mainly why id classify vinland as Seinen with how much philosophy and introspection it has. But you're right about the cute stuff being overlooked as Seinen very easily!

Maomao ripped off the fabric of her own skirt for the messages she wrote. Out of all the servants that were called by Jinshi, she's the only one whose skirt has stitch marks from where she sewed it back together (you can even see one of the eunuchs notice it).

Okay, that surprises me. For the reason you told me you didn't care much for Frieren, and yet you prefer Apothecary Diaries? Also, yes to Dr Stone and Hell's Paradise. The latter is the most underrated out of the Dark Shonen Trio (JJK, Chainsaw Man, Hell's Paradise), as well as my favorite.

I really don't understand how people think frieren and her are similar both great characters but I don't see the comp at all

Really? I think they are some similarities. Their nonchalant attitude about objectively bad things happen to them. Mao's reaction to getting kidnapped is about the same as Frieren's reaction to being thrown in jail. Mao's excitement about plants and herbs is very similar to Frieren's excitement about magic junk.

I feel you. I just think Frieren is more about progressing and kinda making up for her past when she really didn't value anything mortal versus Mamao doesn't have that; she cares about a lot of things and is always in the moment. But after reading your comment, I definitely see more similarities than I thought.

Geeeee, I wonder why Chobei is your favorite lol. 🤣🤣 I'm not sure if I have ONE favorite character in Hell's Paradise, tbh. Chobei and his brother Tome are definitely a standout, as is Yuzuriha (funny how both shows have a character with that shared name haha). Gantetsusai is probably the most consistently entertaining character. And I was most invested in Shion and Nurugai's dynamic (RIP, Tenza).

Yeah I wonder why! Has nothing to do with the fact that he's a hells paradise bakugo 😅 Honestly all of the characters on hells paradise are goated. I love them all actually. Awww Tenza 😭😭 I'll never forgive the show for that possible wedding flash they gave us of him and nurugai. MEAN!

Forreal. His death was painful, but tasteful, and he influences the characters even after his passing, like Rengoku. I also did like the expectation subversion of the master dying to save the student. Here, Tenza died saving the goat Shion (maybe he is my favorite character haha).

The moment Maomao sees something she CAN change - Like the toxic makeup powder - she loses her nonchalant attitude and does her best to help" Of course this is mainly where the characters start in their respective shows, Maomao and Frieren both change as they progress through their stories. PS - Maomao gets a lot of her lack of worry from her mentor, who also acts extremely calm and collected even in situations that others would find very stressful, simply because they focus on the task at hand rather than worry about things they cannot change anyways.

i love this show both sub and dub- but the dub translation just feels like it leaves out so much context and makes it a sillier show

Just binged the show season 1 and now reactions. I thibk a big difference for Frieren and Maomao is their age and where we are on their journey. Frieren is the wise sage who saw everything already. The nonchalant aspect comes a lot from that. "O its another demon lying for sympathy, how cute". Regardless if lifespan, Maomao is so young..not like she has experience of being kidnapped to draw on
