I always love how they get when they see romance in their shows. Dandadan was in the latest poll, and I would LOVE if they watched it. Beyond the hilarity and unhinged nature of the show itself, it also has unironically one of the best anime romances in recent memory, especially as far as shonen goes.

I find it fascinating that Maomao actually trusted Gyokuyou enough to reveal her "conjectures", despite having only known her for a little bit. I am not sure if it says more about Maomao or Gyokuyou tho.

Yeah, honestly I've not been super into romance shows for most of my life so I never really looked for them. Dandadan was really cute so I felt the craving for more, so I've watched Fruits Basket, My dress up darling and Fragrant flower blooms with dignity after that, and honestly I liked them all a lot, they're really good

Apothecary diaries has my favourite romance in anime of all time, but Dandadan's is a close second. That couple is so cute and adorable

I know Fruits Basket is considered a classic romance anime, but I haven't watched it myself. My Dress Up Darling is AMAZING, and I'm sure K & M would enjoy the core message of the show, as well as the main pairing. Would it be wrong to admit that I didn't care for Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity? Like, I was bored throughout.

Personally I LOVED Fragrant Flower. Honestly it surprised me how much I actually enjoyed it, I didn't think it'd hit as hard as it did.

How are the novels? I still have a few chapters of the sequel for Lord of the Mysteries to read, but after I finish I was thinking of reading either the Apothecary Diaries novels or the Ascendance of a Bookworm novels.

To each their own. ✌🏼 Another great one is The Dangers in My Heart. It is SUPER sweet and cute, with pro what I would consider to be my favorite couple in anime. 🥰

This is actually the first Light Novel I've ever read and I'm having a really good time with it. You really get into the characters heads in a way that's just not possible in any other medium, especially with a character like Maomao who's actions are VERY different from how they are actually thinking. If you like the anime i highly recommend reading the novels.

I wonder when we'll get Kenny and Montana's intro art for this show. I feel like Lihaku is best for Kenny's vibe, but Montana is a bit trickier, since there's SO many more great female designs in this show compared to the men. Maybe Lady Gyokuyou?

I think self determination is often a theme played upon, particularly because this society/era portrayed is one in which women (and men too to a lesser extent) really don't have a lot of options for it. So I definitely read Gyokuyou's envy as being directed mainly at that, that Fuyou found that tiny thread of self-determination in such a system. And even if we assume that Gyokuyou does truly love the Emperor and is happy being in the position she's in, even then the system means she is also forced to share him with any number of other women.

I have also read the novels! I'm currently at ln 6. It's great in my opinion, but I feel like the translation could be a bit better. For example there is a scene at the end of ln 5 that is heavily mistranslated and that almost put me off a certain character. Turns out, the tone of the scene is way different in Japanese and was not accurately conveyed in English. So while the content of the books is great, I think it even works better as an anime. That's why I love this adaptation so much. But as you said, the books are great to get more information and get an inner look at some character motivations :)

I'm pretty sure I know what scene you're talking about bc i have heard about it online (glad I heard about before hand so that i can read it with that context). I agree that it works great as anime there will always be some things and thoughts characters have that inevitably get lost when changing mediums! BUt that's why we can go and read the source materials lmao
