So we finally have the story of the military officer. Basically "woman hating" in this context just means the military officer was gay. He gifted Jinshi something laced with an aphrodisiac to get with him, but Jinshi gives the gift to Maomao to test it, then has her make an aphrodisiac in turn, which Jinshi gives a woman and tells her to use it on the gay military officer in turn, drugging him so that he can get laid with a woman. It's kind of an insane story to just have in the background XD It also gives full context to the scene of Jinshi barring his door after Maomao suggests that the guy that gave him the aphrodisiac might "visit him tonight".

I think it's less about her being better than everyone around her at stuff, and more so that she thinks about problems from a more practical angle than most. Pretty much everyone around her was raised in court politics and traditions, so they just take a lot of things as a matter of fact (i.e. everyone is cold at the party) without questioning if it could be made better.

Maomao was not supposed to have the matsutake, she was keeping it a secret because you're not supposed to go foraging in the rear palace. Jishi basically said "I know what you're doing, i won't tell if you give me some"

I admit it's been a while since I read the book, but I don't recall there being any evidence to suggest that the military officer who gave Jinshi the laced food is the same person as the "woman hating" officer mentioned in this episode, other than the fact they are broadly part of the same storyline. I'm not saying you're wrong, I don't think there's anything to suggest that either; I'm just saying that conclusion sounds like pure conjecture. Which I mostly mention because Maomao's Dad would criticize you for that, lol.

No doubt, and she deserves it. I'm just cautioning a difference between glazing and Mary-Sue-ifying Maomao. Her being a very flawed character is imo equally important to her being very talented at her special interest.

Yes my fellow David, it is indeed conjecture. Hence why it is a somewhat hidden story in the background of these episodes. I think the evidence is solid enough though to equate the two. - On one hand we have a man trying to drug Jinshi implying he is attracted to him in particular - On the other hand we have a military officer who is infamous for not being attracted to women

I feel like it is somewhat intentional that the emperor is presented this way. You're not meant to really know wtf he's about at this point.
