Just for clarification, because a lot of people get confused at this part: The target of the poisoning was actually Lady Lishu. But because Gyokyou's dish and lady Lishu's dish were switched, Maomao got the poison. The reason their dishes were switched is because lady Lishu's taster wanted to bully her a bit by giving her some fish dish she thought she didn't like. She didn't know however, that Lishu wasn't being difficult about eating the fish, she was allergic. Unintentionally, by switching those dishes, she ended up saving lady Lishu, by giving her that fish dish. We still don't know who tried to poison lady Lishu tho

As for Mamao loving poison, this mc is a little crazy and this is just part of her character. She loves poison because it excites her, she loves learning about how science influences the human body. It's not really deeper than that. Just an mc with a weird quirk 😅

I love that Jinshi's romantic feelings for Maomao doesn't keep him from stopping her from being reckless. It's a nice change of pace to see him be the responsible one.

Yes, since last episode their relationship has changed a bit. When she opened up about why she put freckles on her face, they shared a genuine moment and I think it made Jinshi become a bit more protective over her

To me Maomao always read as basically just a spice fiend lol. She built up enough tolerance and now she’s one of those Hot Sauce People- “oh this soups actually got a nice kick to it. Anyone else would be dead now”

Most of this gets clarified next episode. I think they already saw that ep but even so, pls be careful of any spoilers, I've seen more than one react channel getting spoiled on the twists in the show and it sucks whenever it happens.

So the hairpins seem to be a way to say someone is... not quite "yours", but... has your favor. Is under your protection. It seems to have maybe even romantic connotations, potentially, when given from a man to a woman. Point is, I think Maomao didn't want to have multiple pins in her hair because it would look... untoward? Like, who are you actually loyal to? And two of those are from men, so which one are you loyal to/interested in? I think that's why she chose to display them less prominently in her belt, to avoid offending the givers if she hid them, but also not to appear too ostentatious as to actually wear several favor tokens in her hair at once. This is Maomao, she goes out of her way to not be conspicuous, and having the favor of multiple famous people in the Rear Palace makes her stick out.

Tbf, this is a very different kind of show than they're used to. It's method of delivering information is MUCH more subtle.

Just to clarify, The taster for lady lishu switched the plates because lishu said she can't have certain foods and why she had rashes but lady gyokuyou wasn't the target originally. The dishes just got swapped. (Edit saw a more detailed comment below but ya)

I don't really see this as a spoiler, first time watching this episode I immediately figured out that the food taster was pulling a "prank" on Lady Lishu not knowing the dish poisoned. Also, I think another reason why she was scared was because as the food taster if she hadn't swapped the food then she would have been the one to get poisoned and died, not Lishu

Honestly between the poison that should have gone to Lady Lishu and the fish allergy having the potential to seriously injure her, Lishu's taster is incredibly lucky that this went down that way it did. There were so many ways this day could have ended in her death, by poison or execution. Maomao saved that girl's life. Twice. By getting the poison instead and by stopping her pranks before she seriously hurt Lishu.
