It's sorta the middle tbf. It's just that we're never getting the rest of it in manga format or animated. Its kinda like the asoiaf books in that regard.

I'd guess that, like asoiaf, we are more than halfway through. But it's hard to say for sure since I'm not sure if Togashi is writing with a particular ending in mind; his writing seems to be very reactionary in that he writes one segment of the story and then the next just sort of follows naturally from what happens. In the regards the anime ending might be the most fitting ending for the series we could get despite the number of lose threads it leaves. Personally still hoping we get at least the next arc animated eventually, but I've little doubt that too will leave open plenty of new threads to follow once it concludes. I do know that Togashi has revealed his sort of "break in case of emergency" ending. Which is basically that Gon, satisfied with his grand adventure, lives out the rest of his life in peace on Whale Island (with iirc hints of a granddaughter who has inherited the adventurous spirit and wants to be a Hunter).

We're absolutely getting more I manga format at least. The author has said even if his failing health prevents him from finishing it he has everything planned out for his wife (sailor moon author) to continue it
