i LOVE the way momo saved herself instead of the classic somebody else swooping in to save her. i think okarun coming in to attempt to save her does so much to show how close they will grow, but it’s way more powerful to see her save herself in this situation.

I don't if many people agree, but to me, Momo Ayase is the main protagonist of Dandadan, and Ken Takakura is the deuteragonist.

Who is Dan? That's the perfect question to start off this series! The going theory was that it was like a dramatic sound drop, an onomonpia as Montana said, such as would be in an old serial from back in the days of stuff like Adams Family or Lost in Space. Like DAN da DAN. But the creator said that as much as he likes that interpretation, it's not correct. So nobody knows. By the way, thanks for picking my question. Love the reaction so far! Fair warning, I'm not going to say for what episode, but have some tissues available while you watch.

I'm pretty sure she was! If I remember correctly, she was depicted as just a regular granny running super fast through the tunnels in an episode but I may be wrong

English is not my native language so it may be relevant but I honestly think the original voices are waaaaay more funny! But so far I don't think the dub is 'bad' (and I know this subject is pretty recurrent so of course it' only my opinion)

Tunnels and hospitals like these ones are actually pretty common in Japan. Japan is (unfortunately) going through a population decline and has been going through it for a while. (There's too many people working and not enough having kids.) As a result, there's a lot of abandoned places like these in the country. Entire towns are just gone now. Naturally, stories about these places have accumulated over the years and have made their way into popular culture in Japan, usually in the form of stories about spirits or ghosts or aliens. Many older Japanese anime filmmakers have even made quite a few films inspired by the places they grew up now being abandoned. It's kind of sad, really. :(

I don't think it's meant to be horny, it's more meant to be shocking/scary? While I agree that the camera angles are sometimes very poorly chosen, it's not anywhere near certain other anime that try to delve into similar territory (*cough* Goblin Slayer *cough*) It's also kinda true to the lore it is using, if you delve any amount of time into UFO stories, like 60% of them are extremely sexual

maybe i’m not remembering correctly but this show really isn’t as sexual as y’all make it out to be. the most sexualized character is the grandma. mha has more questionable and overtly gross moments imo (i love mha but there’s really nasty bits and characters)

You're absolutely correct. There's a difference between "uncomfortable" and "problematic", and too many people put this show in the latter when it's the former.

I think there's probably a good argument to be made that this is a rare example of the Sidekick main character. The other example I know of is the movie Big Trouble in Little China, which is explicitly intended that the main POV character isn't the hero of the story.

Dandadan is basically their first romance anime (not counting movies like Your Name and I guess the Chainsaw Man: Reze arc movie).

Momo is voiced by Abby Trott, same VA as Nezuko from Demon Slayer. Glad she finally gets to flex her vocal chords for this show. 😆 Ken's VA is great, too. AJ Beckles' vocal range between regular Ken and his yokai form is INSANE.

If I have my facts right, I believe the reason this anime can feel like an absolute trip at times is that the mangaka basically started this as a creative exercise to deal with writers block by throwing everything at the wall. They weren't really trying to tell anything coherent, so the fact that the chaotic mess of a story clicked with people was sort of just an accident.

i’m overjoyed that you guys came away from the first episode with reasonable interest! i’m not only glad you gave it the benefit of the doubt, but that you at least didn’t jump to the conclusion that this is “pdf file bait” from the mangaka and recognised that none of the sexual predators are portrayed in a positive or even comedic light, unlike some of these other anime/manga 😭 dgmw, an argument can definitely be made that some moments are included for shock value (which is just a characteristic of the larger horror genre honestly), but unlike other mainstream shounen, at least the text isn’t asking us to like the monsters perpetuating active harm.

i do also want to say i don’t think anyone should begrudge anyone who’s got fatigue so-to-speak from overtly horny themes in battle shounen. to anyone fatigued by it (myself included in a lot of cases), i understand that it all starts to look the same, regardless of authorial intent, and i don’t blame you for wanting to veer far away from it.

So a detail I never see people talk about is Okarun (Main guy) folding his clothes before offering to go to the cave on his own. In Japanese culture I believe that is a common thing people will do before they take their own life (the imagery I'm familiar with is in lakes). Always found that an interesting detail

I didn’t mean it in a bad way more that I’ve noticed more recently a lot of artists have started censoring themselves out of worry that they’ll “make people uncomfortable”. and while I agree that if the story you want to tell doesn’t need heavy themes then you don’t have to put it in I tend to enjoy when an artist leans into the thing there depicting This anime happens to be one of the ones that Leans more twords making you uncomfortable and I think that’s part of the point

Not true. The Family does not get their comeuppance immediately. Not for the viewer. We were made to wait and see how it resolves. For a year and a half. And I don't think anyone is objecting to the perps getting punished, a lot of us just think you don't need to repeatedly pull this on the same (underaged) character multiple times in one season. Show is freaking great for the most part, but that's kinda... yeah. We don't need to see that twice in a single season. That's becoming exploitative at that point. If the show wanted to talk about SA, it already had a scene they could go back to and discuss how it affected the girl. But they didn't. They just had her assaulted again. And that's when I dumped the show.

Yeah the family I think is a lot weirder and I wasn't a fan of them either. At least the aliens are kinda true to lore, so there's a proper reason for why they are the way they are, the family on the other hand are just creepy because there had to be a big shock value cliffhanger scene to end the season (or manga chapter) . That said, I think it was actually handled better in that scene because unlike in ep1 the camera doesn't linger on her body nearly as much. I think it's one of the core rules for any piece of media that attempts to depict SA or threats of SA to make the scene gross and not "sexy" in any way shape or form, and a shocking amount of shows fail at that. The worst one I can think of is Goblin Slayer, because gods the camerawork in that is just god awful. Compared to that Dandadan is handling things the proper way, but yeah it could always do better.

Honestly in the recent years I found that anime get a lot better dubs than they used to, especially the bigger hits tend to have a lot of effort put into them. Personally I love how they translated the teenager slang for the dub.

The ending of this episode can be pretty harrowing, and there are a couple of moments(very sparsely) that have an uncomfortable tone like that. That being said, I agree with what other comments have said which is that Momo is the protagonist of this series, and I think the show does a good job of never removing her agency even in situations like the one in this episode. Momo is strong, and not just because of her powers, she's pretty confident and very good hearted and I think a lot of her strength in the darker moments of the show come from that, and also her sick psychic powers. All of that is to say, I think the series does handles Momo well despite the dark tone of certain moments, and she is never reduced to being a damsel in distress which I like a lot and find refreshing. Momo actually became a favorite character of mine just in general(so did Ken) because I think the series handles her character and arcs really well from what Ive seen. Sorry if this was a bit rambly lmao, I'm a bit tired. Great video! Hope you guys enjoy this series!

The family in particular are supposed to be a pastiche of various Japanese “Rural Horror” tropes. Kind of like how Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Deliverance, or even The Hills have Eyes function in America. Like if you’ve ever seen the excellent horror satire “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil,” it’s those same concepts explored, but Japanese. Creepy, backwards country people with old beliefs and traditions and very often, an element of sexual predation over the young people that wander into their neck of the woods. I agree it’s shocking in an anime, but it is basically just the same thing as any number of teen horror movies I’ve seen, especially ones with evil hillbillies.

I learned the term Gofer in film Class. It is pretty much outdated slang for a PA, especially ones on the lower end of the totem pole. It's short for "go fer/for", but I haven't heard the term in years
