Mao Mao is right btw Jinshi in that moment had to face the very real power imbalance between him and Mao Mao. Even if he does have feeling for her and would never intentionally harm the fact still remains that with a word he could make her do anything or just have her killed.

Concubine Fua wasn't asleep when she climbed the wall. Mao Mao concluded she was faking it to make sure the emperor would never touch her.

It's an important and stark reminder that no matter how well intentioned Jinshi is, that doesn't just magically make the power imbalance go away. I like that it also shifts the potential romance between them from will they/won't they more to can they/can't they. Both from the status issue and also because of a consent issue; namely that if she can't say no, than she can't really say yes either.

It wasn’t just a will. It had “relevant content” whether the will was genuine or not is another question. It the implication was that it was a “confession” to the poisoning at the garden party.

It's a really good scene, because most romance stories with weird power imbalances kinda just ignore it by the person being well intentioned and never using their power and that's just magically enough to make everything okay with sunshine and rainbows.
