Hey folks,

We’ve got some exciting news to share: we’re finally giving Vanilla Furniture Expanded the full rework it’s been needing for a long time. This was one of the earliest mods in the Vanilla Expanded lineup, and while it's served players well over the years, it’s definitely showing its age.

We’ve learned a lot since we first made it. Better balancing, cleaner art process, and more thoughtful integration with the rest of the game are some of the things I think will be beneficial here. So, it’s time to bring it all up to speed with our current standards. That means improved visuals, rebalanced stats, and a bunch of new content to make it the ultimate furniture mod for RimWorld - as it is right now the most popular mod in our collection.

And don’t worry, this update will be fully compatible with ongoing saves. No broken colonies here.

Why We're Doing This

Honestly, it was overdue. VFE has always been popular, but it’s also always been a bit of a relic. We want it to stand proudly next to the other Vanilla Expanded mods and feel just as modern and polished.

We’re looking at:

Balancing everything properly, no more weird stats or underwhelming furniture that doesn't seem to do anything relevant

Redoing a lot of the visuals to make everything more consistent

Making sure all tech levels feel distinct and useful

Adding quality-of-life features players have come to expect

This is more than just a patch. We’re rebuilding a lot of it from scratch to give you the best experience possible.

What's Changing?

We’re not removing anything, but a lot of it is getting reworked. Names are being cleaned up, stats are being adjusted, and a lot of objects are getting art passes. I mean, some items will be removed, but it's a soft removal - they will remain in your game and not get deleted, you just won't be able to build anymore of them.

Some examples:

Slab Bed is now the Chiseled Bed — fireproof, durable, and it even works with Ideology precepts.

Stone Campfire becomes the Firepit.

Royal furniture is actually royal now — higher beauty and better comfort.

Beds now influence birth quality properly and play nicely with all linkables.

Modern additions like arcade machines, roulette tables, and pianos now give recreation and passive skill XP.

Computers (both old and modern) now tie into research and intellectual growth.

Radios offer music-based recreation and function differently depending on tech level.

In short, everything feels more polished, more useful, and more RimWorld-y.

New Stuff

We’re not just reworking the old, we’re adding a ton of new content too. Here’s a taste of what’s coming:

Neolithic

Chiseled Double Bed – stone bed for two, fireproof and tribal-friendly

Dark Firepit – a dim heat source that fits darklight preferences

Medieval/Industrial

Simple Double Bed – fast to build, cheap, no quality - which means even terrible construction pawns will build a decent bed

Punching Bag – trains melee while relaxing now

Animal Sarcophagus – give your muffalo the burial it deserves

Floor and Desk Lamps – compact light sources for tight spaces

Lounger – lets pawns relax and sunbathe for recreation

Modern

Modular Couch System – build corner couches with changeable visuals

Coffee Table – links to couches/armchairs to boost comfort

Long Plant Pots – decorate long stretches with flowers

Royal Standing Lamp – for colonies that want both beauty and light

And yeah, modular furniture with adjustable visuals is finally a thing. You can set couch layouts manually and the game will remember what you picked if something gets destroyed.

What's the Goal Here?

At the end of the day, we just want VFE to feel like a mod that fits perfectly into RimWorld. We want it to be the first and last furniture mod anyone needs, whether they’re playing tribal, medieval, industrial, or spacer colonies.

Everything now integrates properly with DLCs like Royalty, Ideology, and Biotech. Everything is rebalanced. Everything looks good. And nothing breaks your save.

Wrapping Up

This is a big update, and we’re really excited to finally share it with you. It’s been a long time coming, and we think the wait will be worth it.

We’ll be sharing more previews soon, so keep an eye out. Thanks for sticking with us all these years, we hope you enjoy building your colonies with a whole new set of tools.

Yes, that's me on the cover of the mod.

Thank you for modular couches! Now I can make the home cinema my pawns deserve! Also, probably a good addition in case I ever play the violently hedonistic anti-slavers again.

Nathan Gadoury

May you please keep the outdoor lamp? It comes in useful when you are trying to light up a no-man’s land, without lighting up your own people(plus it looks distinct from the base game flood lamp or whatever it is called)

Jason McGinn

I must regretfully point out a missed opportunity on the April roadmap. The Core, Security, and Spacer modules all have a version of you with the same pose. If you tweaked the Spacer one just a tiny bit, it could have had the "live long as prosper" hand, and a chance to see how long it took for us to notice. :P

BrenTenkage's Gaming

good shit indeed, I like the updates and the simple add ons. Can't wait to see the other furniture updates, especially the high tech ones

Marius Salsbury

Every time I see there's an update I get excited to see what's new, and you guys do not disappoint. I'm *really* looking forward to this one ^_^

Brodeg Hammerforge

I'm really excited about this one. Will this combine all the different modules into a single mod?

Oskar Potocki

No no, absolutely not. Each furniture mod will remain standalone.

WarCookie

I feel like the royal lamp has different perspectiv on the shade and base. We see the base from above but the shade head on. Is that intentional?

Mea K

Very nice. The modular couches especially will come in handy!

Lydia Collinson

Y'all are the best - there are other furniture mods out there, but your stuff is by far the most expansive & the most well-executed. Even the old VFE is an extremely well-made mod - super excited for the tweaks & the new stuff!

Oskar Potocki

Wait till you see the rustic lamp in the base game. That’s just how perspective is on certain structure types in Rimworld.

Zach

Ayyy, you added a coffee table! That alone makes me so happy. No more dining room tables in the middle of the living room pretending to be a coffee table

The dapper man

This stuff sounds incredible! I can’t wait for the update to release!

John Anderson

If there was one mod that will define my definitive desserters playthrough it would not be this mod. But that mod would sit on a classy price of furniture from this mod.

Brutus Albion

Petition to make the Lounger work under sunlamps so our dupes, I mean pawns, can sunbathe in the comfort of their underground bases 😆 (loving the update so far)

Romain Gérard

Oskar you absolute unit you and your team are churning out masterwork after masterwork

Stim

But I like the outdoor lamp. Also, no baby bed for simple furniture?

Aether

you updating the basics isn't as "flashy" but it's super smart and I can't wait to see it! Almost every one with mods will use it. Thank you!

sebastiaan

don't know if your still taking suggestions but i think a volleybal net would go really great with the loung chair lets you get a reall beach party feel but maybe that could also be used in a sports and sports and recreation module

p t

Please add a laptop recreation item that’s installable on tables.

Stim

Ooh, that could be a nice mix with the pool from Dubs hygene. Maybe even add some tanning ceiling lights to let one have an indoor beach

sebastiaan

yea that's might thought my current base is on the beachs and i also have reagrowth instaled wichs lets pawns bath in the water and look like their swimming so i really want a full beach theme goin. i also think a sports and rec module would be great you could gain a small bonus to mass caried if you pawn are heatly and the rest of de pack cloud have stuff like music instraments and other rec items

Kristian West

Looks great, looking forward to the new art especially. The only thing I am not so happy about is wardrobes giving Comfort now instead of Rest Effectiveness. Since Comfort Levels over 1/100% have no effect, increasing comfort further does not have extras. What I liked about the old wardrobes was that they give a different small bonus that fit with their nature of more research intensive modern furniture status.

Kirboh

Sounds pretty good, though I'm not sure I like the idea of coffee tables. At some point, your armchairs/couches will be high enough quality that comfort will be maxed out, and the table will only be for aesthetic purposes. If there were a way to go over +1.00 comfort, but only through linkables, that'd be great. Though I would imagine that'd require C# coding.

Romain Gérard

Will the 1x1 table also include the vanilla ideology expanded (memes and structure) styles like sekertist and such ?

Romain Gérard

I have another slightly technical question: will the training dummy from VFE Medieval 2 also get the new "Strength play" recreation type ? How will it and the punching bag differ from each other ?
