I've gotten a lot of questions from you guys about whether I'll be doing Inktober, so I wanted to address that in a post! I won't be doing Inktober this time around because I want to try something new. Last year felt a bit like a repeat of the same techniques and approach as the year before, and I didn't feel like I would get the same learning experience out if it by doing the same thing again.

The main thing I really loved from doing Inktober in the past was the challenge of learning a new medium that I had never tried before, and being amazed to discover that I was able to improve and learn if I pushed myself past my comfort zone. This year I want to branch out even further and try different kinds of paints. The pressure of drawing every day was kind of extreme for me, so this year I’m going to try a different medium and theme each week, with some wiggle room to decide which days I’ll paint. I decided to call this challenge #Brushtober - you can see which medium & theme I'll be working on in the little schedule above!

I’m scared to go outside of my digital art comfort zone, but it’s always been worth it in the past and I’m excited to see what I will learn! I will of course be sharing as much of that journey as I can with you guys! Feel free to join if you like, I know it's very short notice - I only just came up with the idea this week. If you wanna join, there are no rules, just have fun ❤️

Are you guys doing any drawing challenges this month? If so, which one?

Oh oh oh what a great idea! I prefer (I enjoy drawing) non-digital painting so, I'm waiting for what you could do and draw!

Rali M.

Oooh! Love this, Lois! I caught your post on insta about inktober and it's so exciting to hear more about your Brushtober challenge. It sounds so appealing and I'd love to join along. I was planning to do Sha'an d'Anthes's Peachtober prompts this year as I try to get back to art + creating (she's Furry Little Peach on social). Super excited to follow along with your Brushtober journey – I can't wait to see what you create! <3

I'm also skipping Inktober and instead try to focus on improving my art in general with doing more online courses and practicing things like anatomy, color theory and many more subjects😊

Mona

Wow, this is sooo great :) I love Daniel Smith watercolor btw. I hope you will enjoy the journey. I think traditional art is like when you visit a forest :) You can touch the trees, feel the lovely air, you feel the heat of the sun. At least for me. :) The 'sound' of the paper, the smell of paint.... oh I love it :)

Kat Craig

I can't wait to see what you come up with! I decided to participate in Inktober again this year just to see if I can actually finish all 31 days for once. I know there's a lot of drama around Jake Parker right now, but I'm choosing to separate all that and just use it as a chance to improve on my skill and speed.

Loish

i feel you, last year i tried to squeeze it in alongside all the other stuff and just broke me! i had so many neck and wrist issues that took a while to resolve. having the daily prompts made me feel like i was 'losing' if i had to skip one or two days. which is why i just have a weekly setup now, then i can just see when there's some time and headspace available to paint!

Loish

i managed to finish all days in 2018 and it was a powerful feeling! i hope you achieve that goal this year :) and i really do feel like inktober is bigger than jake parker somehow, haha. it's such a huge event!

Radka Kopecka (radu.k.art)

oh, you read my mind! I was kinda looking forward to inktober, but when it comes to it, I realized that I don't want to do ink anymore and I draw everyday anyways, so what is the point for me? I rather want to improve or learn something new, so I'll be doing that while using some of the nice prompts that go around. Thank youuu

Kat Craig

Completely agree! And thank you! I hope I achieve it too :)

Aneta Bronisz-Antoniolli

There is nothing to be scared of Lois! Go with the flow! :D I've just prepared my table with some art supplies I'll be using during the October month. I'm not following the official prompt list though. Last Inktober was really intense and I wasn't happy with the final results :( ... It felt rushed and I run out of ideas very quickly. This year I'll do it on my own terms using my own list. After all this should be a pleasure and a tool to learn, not a mindless marathon...

Axel Oil

I think I'm gonna join this. I wasn't quite feeling the will to do inktober and when I read your post I realized it was because, as you said, it feels like the same all over again. not doing a daily challenge also feels a little better for me this time around. Thanks for sharing, even if it's short notice.

Loish

exactly. that's why i think it's a good year for me to move on, i was definitely feeling the threat of 'mindless marathon' mode last year.

Eri

That's so cooool

Omari

Last year i completed all 31 days of inktober and it kinda broke me hahaha, i liked the stress and excitement of it but after it was over i went through a deep art block, this year im going to take it slow and steady, i dont think i will follow one single prompt list for the whole month, i might try out different prompts from different artists, but i will def not force myself to draw everyday 💖!!

ALK

My concern with the everyday prompts is that I feel like if it's not good enough to share I don't have time to redo? I'm torn between posting to accomplish the goal and only posting things that are really great. I think that takes away from the meaning of it all to push you to be creative and makes me focus on social media. I love the idea of taking a week or so per image. This time around I think I'm going to work on making things simple and experiment with brushes on procreate.

Congrats on the commission!! - from a fellow retail worker

Hi Lois, love to see what brushtober will bring you as in new insights or techniques. I am doing inktober this year after I joined last year chilltober. Last year was an eye opener: I got totally stuck. It was not the challenge or I didn’t know how to work with ink. It was that I used ink in the past to create sumi-e like artwork. Very intuitive and ‘messy’ look of ink splatters and smushes. (What most people hate while working with ink). I had no idea how build a career with that. And the style I had last year, yeah well, that didn’t work for me in the end. (Looking back I think you have spotted that in the social media workshop somehow - my work was cute but meh - but you spotted my reasoning for illustration very well👍🏽 and that fits the authentic style of me). I got back to my ‘old’ (fashion illustration) style: fast pen strokes, minimalistic and modern. And I found my mojo back!!! So this year inktober and next I will see what I will join to challenge myself in different media etc. Because I’m working with ink a lot lately. I wish you good luck and enjoyment with brushtober!

Marcos Vian Monken

Can't wait to see with what you will come up with :D This is going to be my first Inktober! I'm so nervous but I believe it's going to be a pretty amazing experience.

starforged

I love this! I’m familiar with a few of these items - some more than others - but it could be a good refresher as I’ve only been digital for awhile now! Looking forward to seeing the art you make!

Tony Helms

This sounds amazing! I'm doing the official Inktober list this year. Mostly to stand by and support Jake and connect with other new artists using the same daily tags.

MRoberts_art

This sounds fun and interesting!! I'm doing the Jake Parker inktober daily prompts using micron pens in my moleskin to try and improve my line work. I also am being ambitious and want to do a weekly digital painting using a mashup of squidneydoodles, mabgraves and madie arts prompts. Looking forward to see what you do 😁

MIGUEL ANGEL GONZALEZ SANTOS

What a coincidence! I was wondering to ask you when you’ll hosting #Loishtober but that idea it’s very attractive!!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Tara Kirkland

Is anyone doing Drawtober? There are only 6 prompts for the whole month which seems more manageable, and the themes are interesting.

Alicia

This is such a neat idea! I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll create this month.

MWMaiwenn Mayela

I wanted to participate, but not follow the rules.... so I like your idea of doing it with techniques. I want to make an effort to draw bodies and expressions, but I still don’t know if doing of digitally since it would be more effort to me ( I think it would be a good idea experience)

FaroreNightclaw

I'm avoiding Inktober after the bullshit moves the creator pulled this last year (trying to monetize it and prevent others from doing so, claiming copyright over the name after years of it being open ended for everyone, etc). I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep up with it but this year I'm trying Interiortober - https://twitter.com/monwinvo/status/1310446899258888194

Your #brushtober looks exciting! It was quite amazing to watch you adapt to an unfamiliar medium within just a few days in the past. Be fearless! :) I‘m going to follow the official inktober prompt list again this year. I‘ve found that the random, unthemed prompts really help me to come up with ideas and pick my own subject. Hopefully I‘ll generate a few good sketches to take further after Inktober., probably experimenting with mixing 2D / 3D.

Niquey

This looks like it'll be fun!

Loish

very exciting, the official prompts can be a really great motivator for coming up with new ideas! good luck with the challenge this year :)

Loish

how cool!! that sounds like a great challenge.

Loish

i saw the prompts and it looked really cool! might join in in an upcoming year, i like the looser approach to the schedule.

Loish

haha thanks! i don't think i could host something with my name in it haha. brushtober feels better.

Loish

haha i know right? when i saw those i was like.. this is perfect for me.

Loish

it is really cool to see how different artists interpret the prompts!

Loish

good luck! it's very intense but so fun!!

2026-11-03 03:00 #brushtober seems interesting!! Its been a while since a draw and painted anything with a brush (I work mostly digitally and with markers). I wanna take part in the challenge and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do <3 I wonder: are you planning to show process via video/ pictures? I'd love to see your approach on these techniques.

2026-11-03 03:00 I’m going to be doing something similar to your brushtober idea. I’m planning to try some new things, and also to try to post every day with what I’m actually working on, not necessarily just finished pieces, just to show my work each day for a month. I plan to work mostly digitally, but to try some new types of brushes in procreate as I’ve been in a rut using mostly just my two favorite brushes and a couple variations on them that I’ve made. Going to try using more brushes from Max Ulichney’s Max packs, and various others that I’ve had sitting unused in procreate lately.

2026-11-03 03:00 I love seeing what everyone's up to! I'm doing @furrylittlepeach's #peachtober20 since the prompts are pretty straightforward. Just some cute ideas to get started with and keep practicing :)

Loish

i've heard so many people participating in that one! I'm gonna check it out!

Loish

that sounds like it will be great for your creativity! max packs brushes are super fun, they are definitely good for experimenting and trying stuff out.

Loish

definitely! i'll try to film as much of it as I can.

Saskia

This sounds so great! I also did inktober twice and now I wanted to do something else, because I have no problem with working in black and white but I struggle with color. I do a mix out of peachtober, plastober and dinotober because I couldn't decide for one :D

ETA

Great! I like to join your challenge theme :D

Loish

dinotober? i now know what I'm doing next year hehehe

Zorobabel Flores

This year I’ve created my own prompt list about Fashion Illustration. I call it InkFaZhion

Life of Mr. Pumpkin

Ah I can't wait to see what you come up with! This year, I'm doing a challenge based on my original character Mr. Pumpkin! It's just 8 prompts (2 a week) for the month. Less prompts means more time to focus on each full illustration. If you want to take a peek, here's my insta where I've posted the first prompt! https://www.instagram.com/misschibiartist/

Hi. Thank you for coming up with “brushtober”. I’m looking forward to seeing your work! Yes, I’ll join you. I’m relatively new to digital painting so I’ll be working with different digital brushes and painting styles. I think it will be a great opportunity to experiment and try new things.

Saskia

It's from the German illustrator "Frau Annika" :D

Loish

that's awesome! i've seen a few people interpret the challenge this way and I like that a lot! i believe cubebrush is hosting a challenge like that (with the same name, purely a coincidence) and is offering discounts on brushes thru their site.

Loish

i love that idea! it's so cute and i love what you did for the first prompt!
