You guys might recognize this one! It’s the pink fish drawing from my painting & rendering tutorial in procreate. You can watch the process of creating the original sketch here, and the process of painting & rendering it here!

There were some things that were bugging me about the way the painting looked at the end of that tutorial, so I gave it a complete overhaul and turned it into something really different. I think the main thing that was bugging me was that it was a very smooth and soft drawing. It was missing some chunkiness and edginess that I’ve been gravitating towards in my art lately. I’ve also been feeling really drawn towards red, rather than pink, so I ended up moving more in that direction as well. I’ve just been craving more angular shapes and intense colors.

I think the evolution of this painting shows you guys how I analyze my own style and try to push my work in new directions based on what I “feel like” at that time in my artistic development! Sometimes I want more softness, sometimes I want more roughness. Hope you like it, even though it’s so different from the tutorial version!

IM ALWAYS AMAZED BY UR COLORINGGGG AAAAAAA. AND I LOVE THE CUTE FISSHEESSSSSSS🥺🥰❤️

Jess Diggins

This is stunning! That colour combo, so perfect 💕 One of the things that I love about your work is seeing you always pushing in new directions - it’s so cool to see your style develop and change and build on itself, it never stagnates and every piece feels so fresh and new!

Sophie Meyer

Absolutely stunning. I think you went definitely in the right direction with this one!

AméAmé.art

Woo ! I didn't expect your drawing will take that direction :o This is stunning to see all this evolution and contrast between soft version and hard edge version

Lucas

Woow!! Beautiful

Yousef Abdullah

Holy crap this turned out amazing. So inspiring!

SunTallulah

I was totally not expecting this direction but it turned out amazing! Wow! This is so inspiring ❤

Atılay Sargın

In the description what you mean is really touch me, it is important even more than technique. Also i feel japanese/chinese culturel makeup in the face which is awesome! Thank you for making our eyes full of love and real art 💕

Pretty_Bvnny

Woooooooooow. This was so unexpected, what a surprize and transofrmation from cute girl with fishes, to something really extraordinay and fantastic *-* I'm in love You're Breathtaking <3

John Beatty Art

This is very beautiful. As an artist who doesn't play in the digital field, do you ever wish a piece like this was on an actual canvas with paint? Or... I could also see you using this as a springboard to an actual painting ( tight comp! ) if you wanted to create it in the analog world. Thots?

Zelyphia

This is sooo beautiful, I can't even 😭 You are such a great inspiration to me aaah

Carolina Valdes

Wow colors are so in harmony!! I love her hair, in my opinion this reminds me of the little mermaid but at a rave 💞Loish, was it fun to paint fish?

Kat Craig

Ooh I love the overhaul! I was just about to say I can really see the difference in your hair rendering technique, much more chunkier, and graphic then the soft, almost liquid shapes that you've created in the past. Very very cool!

Stella Rose

So did you switch over to photoshop to complete this or say 100% in procreate?

Daniella Tran Van

I love how this painting's evolved and the new color palette!

Anne E.

Wow, absolutely amazing!!!

Tyler

Fantastic evolution!

Amber

WOW!!! It came out absolutely gorgeous!!! I’m truly in awe of it 😍😍😍

Niquey

Omg. I love this! I need to watch that hair tutorial

TashieCake

This came out 10x better than the last time we saw it (2nd photo)!!! I liked that version with the salmon pink but it felt a bit 'pretty'? This new version is more unexpected and edgy, so perfect! ❤️ Using something innocent like goldfish in a more dark, mysterious visual story is a great contrast. This is a great example of how taking risks is worth the rewards 😍 Thanks for sharing ! x

Lauren Nicole

Do you think getting to this level of detail would be possible in procreate? I’m so in love with this and the style switch up is flawless! Is there a process video on the final version as well?

Zoë Brooking

I love that fish peeking around her arm :D.

Nora Lau

And i thought it couldn't be better 😮

Keith Himebaugh

I love how you return to your drawings to improve them. While I try to teach students that a drawing, like a dream, is a snapshot of where you are in the moment, not a assessment of capability, it's a lesson I keep forgetting for myself! So many drawings keep staring at me with their flaws and I have to remember i can do something about that rather than feel bad. Love this piece, Lois!

Adelle Gough

Love the direction this has gone in :) I'm definitely vibing with the chunkiness!

Pavitra Pires

Amazing! Would love to see the process video if you could share it. Very interested to see the way you transitioned from the previous style this was to what it is now.

Loish

i do believe i recorded the full process for this one, so I can definitely make that :)

Loish

yep, that's totally true! i think if you approach your art as a snapshot, you take the pressure off and just accept the piece for what it's gonna be.

Loish

hehe he got a really soulful face.

Loish

this is absolutely possible in procreate! and yes, I did record the painting process for this so I will put together a process video!

Loish

yes that's exactly the issue i had with the salmon pink one... too pretty / smooth / perfect. I wasn't feeling it! glad you like this one!

Loish

i switched over to photoshop :)

Loish

thanks so much kat!

Loish

yes it is always so fun to paint fish! they have such beautiful reflectiveness on the scales and they have a blank expression so it's easy to play around with the shapes and style for them :) i like your description of this piece, little mermaid at a rave!!

Loish

well, after trying out all sorts of paint last october, i am more drawn to the idea of painting pieces like this in the future. especially gouache worked out really well for me and i think the texture of the paint gives it a lot more personality, whereas with digital i kind of have to fight against the smoothness of it.

Loish

yes! that's some influence from one of my favorite artists, zeen chin, who always does this kind of makeup!

Loish

thanks so much :)

Loish

aw, thanks! that means a lot :)

John Beatty Art

Yes! I've been looking at a lot of gouache painters and am looking to learn myself! Would love to see your approach and thots on doing a non-digital gouache piece!! Thx, Loish!!

Toni Zibert

The original piece from the tutorial was so pretty, but you took the final version in such a wild and unexpected direction and I love it!

Stinna Danger

So beautiful! Did you finish it in procreate as well? Which tool did you use for blocking in highlight and shadows etc in the second to last progress picture?

Gabi Creates

Those fish are so cutee!! I love how you rendered them

Loish

I finished it in photoshop! And for those highlights/shadows I used mostly the lasso tool :)

Nehal Yasser

Plz making video like this :'( ... I REALLY LOVE IT !!!

Scrawly Weaver

Every step looks like a perfectly completed piece of art 🥰

Anonymous

ooo I love those bubbles!

Thalerbet

It is stunning <3 Will we able to see a process video of overhauling?)

Loish

yes, I think that will be possible! I will dig through my recording files and see what I can do!

Safaa

Hi / that was a great tutorials ♥️/ can you please do more of these procreate tutorials?\ i think most beginners prefer it over photoshop .and can you please mention the name of every brush in the video? / because somtimes I can’t tell which one are u using / i’v been trying to learn digital painting for 3 years now but i end up with muddy mess and the amount of tools and color is so intimidating so i. End up giving up/ dose it get any easier?😂/ also why don’t u use a paper like screen protector on the ipad ther are so amazing and I highly recommend them♥️

Loish

thank you! I'm actually putting together a procreate tutorial at this moment, so hopefully you will like that! as for screen protectors, they just don't work for me. i guess i'm accustomed to drawing on a smooth surface.
