God I’m so hyped for Advance Wars Reboot Camp. I’ve been getting hooked on the series within the past few months (shoutouts to Days of Ruin and its rock ‘n metal soundtrack) and they all have something special to offer. And having online play here (even if it’s as barebones as it is) is sure to keep me playing well beyond the campaign and challenge modes for months to come. Legit looking forward to this more than Tears of the Kingdom if I’m being real lol.

Looking forward to listening to this! What tier do you need to be subscribed to to access the W.I.N every week?

Hey there! The W.I.N. is part of our live audience tier at five dollars! Thanks for listening!

whoa baby another weekend with big papa steve and that amazing hair of his. what a time to believe alive. i'm looking forward to advance wars. i've never actually played the games but i always heard good things. as i'm sure you can assume, i'm way too dumb to be good at tactical games, but i still think i might finally give these a shot also i honestly agree with the mario movie being a "masterpiece". when you think of it from the context of what it is and what it intended to be, a mario movie, for mario fans, it is without question a masterpiece. peach was incredible, she is exactly how i always thought she was meant to be and i absolutely loved it. i think they did a great job of adding some context to the world and characters, without taking anything away from it at all, an all around win. like you said, more story and connectivity in nintendo games as a whole would be wonderful. i think there is too much fear of losing the "feeling" of these games once you add too many narrative elements. however, you can very clearly flesh out the worlds and characters while taking nothing away. metroid dread did a great job of adding some of those elements, even letting samus talk, by presenting her as more stoic and light on words, without damaging that feeling of isolation and world building that metroid is famous for. the same could very well be done to give an actual voice to link. have a great week steve and thanks for putting up with my rambling every week lol

Great episode Steve! As for Advance Wars, I'm really looking forward to the release. I've never played the original 2 games, though I have played Dual Strike and enjoyed what I could of it (I got stuck on a lab mission and had to quit though, this was a while ago. I probably should give it another shot). Since the original announcement though, there's been quite a bit of Advance Wars By Web content on YouTube that I've been watching, which is an online PVP simulator for the game. While I don't trust myself with PVP of any kind in any strategy game, matches from that sim are really interesting to watch. That has really got me excited for remake.

In a similar note about Advance Wars being a drop in the pan, one of my most anticipated games of the year, Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2, comes out ONE DAY before Zelda and no major gaming outlets have covered either this game or the first game (originally released in 2021) due to a lack of a marketing budget by CyberConnect2, who’s flying solo on this series without Bandai Namco’s funding. It sucks because the series is wonderful and quite storied, going all the way back to PS1.

Hi Steve! Fun episode as always. When it comes to Advance Wars, I personally am excited for it and did really enjoy the original GBA titles. I do wish we got to see a little more of it - it's wild to me how this game has been announced for years now and the most recent trailer was our first public official look at something as basic as "the world map" - but I'm happy to just pick it up and enjoy it for myself when it launches in a couple weeks. I also do think that it isn't being promoted that hard, but, like with Famicom Detective Club before it, I'm guessing these "Nintendo contracts out remakes of dormant IPs"-type games are budgeted in such a way that they don't need to sell millions of units and be the number #1 trending topic on social media for weeks after launch to be successful. And thanks for answering my question! I think the film's depiction of Peach's strength is very different from something like Super Princess Peach, which very much treated the idea of her being a strong character as a bit of a joke (I mean, the game infamously ends with some... pretty weird comments regarding the vibe sceptor that gave Peach her powers for the game). That said, I agree that the status quo is likely to continue for their characters, but hopefully they do emphasize storytelling and character development more in the actual platformer games and don't restrict it to RPGs... though I would really enjoy a more serious take on Princess Peach platformer if Nintendo ever wants to revisit the concept of her saving Mario!

I've played every Advance Wars games, the copies must be somewhere in the attic. But I have no interest in the remake. I don't replay games, it's not something I enjoy. So going through them again with better graphics and QoL improvements holds no interest for me. Mario movie wise, I hadn't heard the complaint that Peach is too capable. And thank God for that, because that would've gotten me in a fightin' mood. Even if it would have been different from past games, having the only female character be helpless, without agency and without her own thoughts & wishes is not a message that anyone should want to support. Same goes if it would've been a different minority. Heck, same goes for any character at all. Which is why we need a Luigi Mansion movie after this to show Luigi is more than just a victim.
