Thursday is open us once again and while there's no killer lead news story as of yet, the day is young. It's going to be Rich, Oliver and Alex on the panel this week and we're going to be taking on a range of topics: we'll be discussing Nintendo's assault on emulation-based YouTube channel and the Ryujinx emulator itself, we'll be frowning and shaking our heads at the Xbox Live and PSN outages and we'll be taking closer look at Epic's remarkable Megalights demonstration.

Beyond that, Square embracing the Xbox platform may get a bit of coverage, and we'll try to have some impressions on Until Dawn on PS5 and maybe even some quick Lunar Lake testing as Rich is finally finding the time to do it. There may well be a couple of surprise extras too.

But here's where you can have your say: please feel free to submit your questions and topic suggestions into the generously provided box 'below'. Cut-off for submissions is 8am BST on Friday morning.

Wez OOSH! (WOOSH)

With Nintendo closing down another form of game preservation recently, can we bet that Sony would do that same since the bloodborne PC port is nearer being finished. At what point can we as the consumer get annoyed/make a stand against companies who blatantly ignore requests for remasters and remakes but will happily cancel the fan made ones (they did this with Bloodborne kart on PC)

I read more and more people stating the Nintendo Switch is the best console ever. On my side, I have one big tech issue with it: I have some games on multiple plateformes and I did notice how Switch versions usually have more lag than the others, to the point where sometimes they feel completely different, even in portable mode. Nintendo games are most of the time very responding as far as I noticed (Super Mario Wonder for exemple) and the issue seems to be with third party games. I've noticed it on the Street Fighter Collection, Streets of Rage 4, Lumines Remastered, Capcom Fighting Collection, and some others from different publishers. They all feel heavier on Switch than on PS4 or even more than on PC obviously. Did you notice the same? Would you know where it can come from? It can't be caused by the dock as I did notice that extra lag when using the console as a handheld and as Nintendo's first party titles are usually very responding. Do you think there's a chance backward compatibility could improve Switch 1 games lag on Switch 2? By the way, why do PC games have so much lower lag than their consoles versions? For exemple on recent fighting games, it's sometimes 30, 40 or even 50% less lag than on PS4 or PS5.

Marcus

Hi Foundry team, hope you’re all doing well! Ubisoft recently announced that their games will be returning to Steam at launch, joining the likes of EA and Microsoft. Are you concerned about the growing reliance on Steam as the dominant platform for PC gaming, especially given recent issues with services going down, like what happened with Xbox and PlayStation this week? Could this consolidation pose a risk for players in the long term?

Epic's MegaLights tech is indeed impressive - but does all of this lighting tech (Lumen, MegaLights, Virtual Shadow Maps, etc.) simply happen "automatically" when full Path Tracing is used such as Cyberpunk 2077's Overdrive mode? What is the cost-benefit analysis of enabling all these items feature-by-feature as opposed to going full PT? Assuming there's any answer besides the obviously monstrous power demands of path tracing.

7SAN

Hi Digital Foundry team! I’m curious to know what's your take on Stellar Blade's odd performance targets for the PS5 Pro (4K50 & HFR80). I admire Shift Up's honesty that it won't be 60fps on fidelity mode, should we expect more heavy titles targeting 50fps with the 5 Pro, unlike the base PS5 where we got to see some 40fps games? Thanks.

Mevlud Sabashvili

Hello DF crew! You have mentioned that products like RTX5090 entise customers to lean towards that brand. Do you think PS5 Pro being defacto the most powerful console on the market, will have the same effect as Nvidia's halo product? Maybe the play here from Sony's side is that PS5 Pro will sell more regular PS5-s. Thank you for your amazing work.

Peter Karadimas

Hello gentlemen, how do you think hardware benchmarking should work in the age of AI Upscaling? I see far too many YouTube channels reviewing GPU's almost exclusively in rasterized tests, but that seems increasingly disconnected from how gamers are actually playing these games, and goes against the general direction of the industry. Cheers!

wildwildwesty

Hello chaps. Do you have any plans to build a PC with components equivalent to the PS5 Pro for analysis? Maybe a “Professional Frankenstein console” of sorts! Cheers

Timothy Long

Just caught the Unreal 5.5 presentation and was pretty impressed by the seeming performance of "mega lights" running on a base PS5. Curious about your thoughts. Thanks

Kaepora

Regarding what's happening with consoles (PS5 Pro requiring online verification for the external disc drive, for example), companies pushing for disc-less consoles and new/future generations not caring much about physical. What would happen if companies required an online check every time a disc was inserted? That would make the physical disc virtually useless in the long run when servers are down, right? Forcing online verification for discs might be a measure that won't cause such a backlash in the future, contrary to what happened with Xbox One. I hope the future is brighter for physical lovers. Hugs from Seville and keep it up miarma!

Eric Benoit

Hello DF Crew, do you think Nintendo premptive strike on emulators implies a security vulnerability on the Switch 2 backwards compatibility features?

Rich

Nvidia has been working for years on ReSTIR, a very mathematical approach to allowing millions of shadowed lights at the same time in RTXDI and RTXGI. Earlier forms of RTXDI didn't have this (eg Q2RTX, or the earlier RTXDI in Ue4), so it's not quite automatic just by virtue of using path tracing.

bjorktribe

John, will you do 50 DF Retros for UFO 50? The series is maybe named... DFR 50?

Zero

Hi Gents! A lot of the frustration around the 9th generation of consoles seems to have boiled over with the PS5 Pro, and we have seen all sorts of commentary on the hardware, perceived lack of advanced software, etc. Particularly though, the hostility to the cross-generation period with the PS4 has been interesting to see when you examine it from a PC gamer perspective. One of the nice things about PC gaming is that (generally), you can play a game that came out today or a game that came out 5-15 years ago on the same machine with relative ease. PC games have a certain scalability and longevity baked into them that consoles don't have. Shouldn't PlayStation fans want their systems to receive support as long as possible? Is the "planned obsolesce" tied to the concept of a console possibly going away as they become increasingly PC-like? Love to hear your thoughts!

Having an AI-neurysm

Hey gents, do you guys (particularly Oliver) have any further insight as to why Guerrilla isn’t using PSSR for their PS5 Pro upgrades? They were one of the pioneers of checkerboard rendering back when the PS4 Pro came out, but this time around they’re actively not using one of the “big three” in the PS5 Pro. Is their new reconstruction method simply just a better fit for Horizon (lots of dense foliage) than the current version of PSSR?

Anders Öhlund

Seeing that mid-gen upgrades to consoles and new generations being backwards compatible with higher power is the way consoles are going forward should developers put more thought into making their games upward scaling right away? Make a PS5 game and make sure that it doesn't just take advantage of PS5 Pro but also allow for easy addition of other settings profiles to be added to take advantage of whatever power provided in the PS6 without having to actually patch the game code? Or do they want keep the extra marketing bump generated by releasing a dedicated PS6 update?

Tyrus1235

Hello, DF crew! With the new RTX 50 series on the horizon, I was wondering what (if any) new bespoke technology/features it will tout when it releases. For example, we know that the RTX 40 series has the huge benefit of being able to use DLSS 3.0 frame generation and that is considered one of its main features. What else could NVidia come up with to make the 50 series its own "beast"? Maybe double frame generation (imagine the added input lag!)? Thanks for all your great content and hope you all have a nice day!

Jonathan Thomassen

Are you at all surprised that Sony did not even consider an architecture change for PS6? How long do you see Sony sticking with x86 for their CPU architecture? Do you think backwards compatibility has become such a big expectation among consumers that architecture shifts are more challenging now than ever before?

ConcreteLlama

Is there much point in new GPUs if the CPUs are currently the main bottleneck? Seems the focus now should be on efficiency and pricing over power. Also, I know that enabling Ray Tracing has quite a high base cost on the CPU but is there anything they could do in future GPUs to reduce that burden? I've found that on GeForce Now it's impossible to get a consistent 60fps in Cyberpunk with any form of RT enabled and I'm assuming it's down to an unbalanced system with relatively weaker CPUs - I'm not sure a 5080 tier could clear that up unless they also upgrade the CPUs.

Bespoke To Soon

Howdy Ho DF Men. PSSR seems to be a much better upscaling solution than FSR. Do you think, (as there is already a relationship between the two) there would be an appetite at AMD to attempt to license the Sony tech for use in future PC Graphics PUs, or is it beneficial for AMD to provide a platform agnostic solution despite it being, well, shit? Ta

Stephen Marshall

Howdy gents! Graphics are great, but I'd like to know which "ugly" games each of you have enjoyed most. Thanks again for the great work !

Sven Dahlin

Hi DF Crew! With RTGI (including Lumen) finally becoming prevalent in many games, and the cross-gen console era coming to an end, will we finally get rid of "baked" lighting? Will developers be able to rely on dynamic lighting, with the workflow advantages that Alex showcased in the legendary Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition video?

Abandoned Walnut

What would you say are the main drivers of games being released too early, whether in terms of issues with bugs, poor performance, missing features etc? I know it's been discussed before but I find ridiculous that games aren't just released when ready. It's also financially rubbish as it's often better to wait a year to buy a game when it's likely to be vastly cheaper and infinitely better. Cyberpunk is a great example of this. I have a feeling I paid less than £20 for this at a time when they finally sorted it out.

Matthew Hewitt

Hello DF Crew. Maybe this has been asked before but curious how you all deal with gaming while traveling, whether it be DF related travel or going on holiday. Any specific items you take with you? Also, how do you handle playing games that can’t be played on a portable platform? Do you just wait until you’re back home to pick up where you left off, or do you take certain things with you? Cheers and appreciate all you do!

Ednamode

Do you think the switch successor can compete with the steam deck in handheld modes at ~5w? Does the next switch “need” to compete with these handhelds in this new market or have we all lost the point because third party performance is irrelevant to the next switches success just like the current one.

Never Ready Eddie

Alreet DF gents? Do you also find it interesting and a bit depressing that just after releasing another poorly performing game on Switch that cries out for PC emulation at 4K 120Hz, Nintendo put the final nail in the Switch Emulation coffin (Ryujinx clawing at the inside of the coffin lid). Will we see any Zombie emulator offspring from the open source corpse of Ryujinx shambling out of the graveyard after Nintendo have thrown their handful of dirt and left though?

Mondpix

Given that Concord flopped and had what is rumoured to be a huge budget, would it not make more sense for developers to go back to smaller budgets with less complex design to create something truly unique and memorable with the Polish you'd expect from a 1st party game? For example, the big budget releases never stick around long in my head once I've put them down but games like Okami, Gravity Rush and Katamari all had amazing design and some form of unique gameplay which I keep coming back to years later even now and is very painfully missing from this gen. We don't need a fancy looking shooter or open world game every 6 months but something that feels small and special just like Sony and even Xbox used to create. So yeah, what are your thoughts on this?

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

Do you think when (if) the next-gen Xbox releases Microsoft will allow developers to drop Series S support for cross-gen titles? If not, do you think the current Xbox Series range will lose access to cross-gen titles that would appear on PS6 and PS5?

Sebastian

Hi DF Team, I recently watched a video about someone plugging his Steamdeck into a CRT. That sparked the thought where we could be if HD and 4K TVs had never been invented. You often speak about the quality of pixels over the quantity of pixels. Could we today have a broader graphical feature set if developers would not need to „waste“ precious console power for higher resolutions? You‘re great. Cheers!

Macky Dee

Hi DF Team, Bit of an evergreen question, but what’s the story with the initial launch brightness calibration screens on most games? I presume they’re required by system holders, but a lot of them seem fairly haphazardly implemented (how ‘barely visible’ do they mean exactly?). Do they make that much of a difference, or just some certification process detritus?

Phazonmasher

Hey DF gentlemen, do you see mini LED having a future in monitors? I value brightness over the other aspects of monitors and I really love the mini led monitor I do own, but they could be better. They're mostly made by off brands with limited options and not as many dimming zones as I'd like. The only one with over 1000 dimming zones is made by BenQ and costs $1200 USD. With OLEDs becoming the dominant force and prices continuing to fall, is there any hope for people like me who love mini led to get good, affordable monitors with this technology? Thanks as always!

Lux

Hello lads. Given the love for Jedi Survivor that Alex has and his passion for consoles, I'm eagerly awaiting his coverage for the now inevitable Nintendo Switch 2 port. There isn't excuses now with the last gen ports! Cheers

Lamine

Hi, how do you think the ps5 pro boost mode will work on ps5 titles, will it be only available to games that already have an option to uncap fps ? How much do you think the fps boost will be on some game’s quality mode, 5, 10 fps ? And will it be a capped constant fps mode or more like the uncap option already available on some games that is quite unstable

Lux

Hey DF! What on earth is going on with Metaphor Refantazio?! How can what is essentially a PS4 game be performing so bad in PC and current gen? Thanks for the content!

Lux

Hello DF! Can you explain (if there is any) the real benefit of the double buffer vsync present on Echoes of Wisdom? Given how intrusive it is to the experience, I would prefer just take the input lag of normal vsync or just tearing as it would probably be less intrusive! Thanks!

Reven

2024/2025 year will be an interesting between Intel and AMD. Where Intel is looking for new ways to enhance the performance for the X86 while AMD is gaining its cpu performance through the traditional way by improving the IPC and cache. The biggest problem for both of them its still is the “efficiency”. As by nature ARM is far more efficient than X86 and that is exactly why apple left Intel and Nintendo chooses Nvidia over AMD.

Tamerator

Hello DF gents, what do you think of the PS5 Pro not selling out like many people expected? Do you think it’s a sign of soft sales or did we finally graduate the supply limited era that plagued the current console generation launch? Thanks for the fantastic content.

Simplex

Any comments after Meta Connect? Meta Orion AR glasses were like 5-10 years from the future, science fiction stuff. Quest 3S made VR affordable again. Batman Arkham Shadow is free with every purchase and according to gamescom previews shapes up to be a very good game.

Simplex

Who expected PS5 Pro to sell out with that price and without a disc drive?

Paul Trainor

Hi DF, Do you think now is the time for a new Steam box? For the 700 quid price of a PS5 Pro could a steam OS livingroom mini PC be built? If not how much do you imagine a similarly spec'd box would need to cost? Cheers, Paul

Kitty Raven

So question for the team: now that PS5 Pro officially has titles supporting 8K output will Rich be getting another 8K set, or will someone else be wearing that possibly dubious crown?

VeryProfessionalDodo

There is so much movement in Valve news recently, with things like Game Recording, it really looks like they’re gearing up for something

VeryProfessionalDodo

It can sell out and still be a flop, and it could be a monster success and not sell out. Selling out is not a metric for anything, since there are so many factors at play for that. Could be scalpers, could be supply constrains, and so on

Daniel Bross

Hi, do you think the Switch 2 will be able to support the newest UE 5 features?

VeryProfessionalDodo

Hey there gents! Is it weird that I found Alex’s video on Tiny Glade some of the most interesting content I’ve seen recently? There might be a new genre of DF videos for smaller games that use custom tech for non conventional results. Noita springs to mind as an example, with its impressive pixel simulations.

AfreemTheDream

Greetings, Foundrymen! Perhaps you can answer this age-old question: just what on Earth has Naughty Dog been working on? For PS1 they developed Crash 1-3 and Crash Team Racing, for PS2 they developed Jak 1-3 and Jak X: Combat Racing, for PS3 they developed three Uncharted games and The Last of Us (including the Left Behind DLC), for PS4 they developed Uncharted 4, the Uncharted DLC and TLoU:P2, and 4 years into PS5 we have... absolutely nothing? Side question: am I the only one who thinks they should've let TLoU just be a one-off and started fresh on a new IP? Cheers!

Chase

Hello Digital Founders! I loved Alex's video on Tiny Glade. Alex spent a lot of time talking about how great the depth of field was. I was wondering if you could go into more detail about what they are doing different that allows them to get such impressive depth of field results. Thanks for all the excellent coverage!

inebriatedPorcupine

Hey DF! Ryujinx has been taken down by Nintendo. When Yuzu was taken down Nintendo had a strong case that it was promoting piracy by adding support for Zelda TOTK before its realse. In the case of Ryujinx no reason was given, leading many to speculate that this is an anti-emulation move. What is your opinion of this take-down, and its impact on future preservation of Nintendo titles?

inebriatedPorcupine

Hey DF, copying my question from last week since my sanity has not yet been cured: I wondered what is your take on geometry clipping, specifically hair clipping - does anybody care? Is anybody working to solve this? We have these beautiful ray-traced games with excellent character models, but hair is still clipping. It was painfully obvious in your PS5 Pro video showing the improvements in Horizon, where I could see the beautiful main character riding through in the air through the wind, with beautiful clouds surrounding her, and then, on the middle of the view all her beautiful hair was f**king clipping through her upper back like some lovecraftian nightmare. This bothers me much more many other graphical features being worked at. Moreover, I remember the first rebooted Tomb Raider for a decade ago already implemented some physical hair solution to solve clipping - it looked a little wonky but it wasn't horror inducing (TressFx maybe?). Please tell.me it bothers you too so I'll now I'm relatively sane.

silentmeow

Would be interested in a stand alone video on this. DF's best setup/config for PC in the living room - maybe running linux? PS5 Pro certainly is the most plug & play but I can't help feeling that a digital library on Steam in combination with the Deck makes the most sense for me. High-end features and upgradeable hardware at home and indie titles on the go. I rarely play games right at launch and can wait for ports of the few charming Sony titles that interest me (ie Astrobot). Thanks!

Abandoned Walnut

Do you think there is a link between the vast discrepancy in predicted specs between the 5080 & 5090 and the reports that AMD don't plan to compete at the high end in the next generation of gpu's? I know there are rumours of a possible 5080 ti in the future sitting between these two but it's interesting that the huge discrepancy in predicted specs comes at a time when nvidia can be fairly confident of no AMD products to compete with except in the mid to lower tiers.

Ernesto González

I don’t remember the PS4 Pro selling out either, it’s a mid gen refresh.

Ernesto González

The verification of the disc drive started with the Slim.

Kaveh Ghorbati

What's up guys? How do you think a hypothetical 6090 would stack up against a 2028 PlayStation 6? I always thought PlayStation 5 was close enough to the 2080Ti, but then it was dwarfed, twice, by the new 90 Class, I'm afraid of the same thing happening again after investing in a "next gen" flagship GPU.

zephyr

Hi DF team! Do you think that the recent takedown of Ryujinx is due to Nintendo's fear that it will be an easy basis of Switch 2 emulation? Could we be looking at another Gamecube/Wii scenario where the two generations are very similar architecturally?

alexrdavies

Has DF ever done a hardware survey? We have an idea of the machinery used by the average Steam gamer, but not the average DF Patron. It could be helpful in targeting review focus and settings advice. You could also ask things Steam doesn't discover, such as what TVs and monitors people are using. As easy as it is to write a poll these days... could it be worth trying?

alexrdavies

Once PS5 Pro is released, how much time do you plan to give it in new game review videos, given it will have a comparatively small install base?

Michael Giles

Megalights running on the PS5?! Epic's making it seem like they've "solved" real-time direct lighting once and for all. But is the Megalights demo, much like the "Lumen in the Land of Nanite" demo, setting us up with unrealistic expectations of how this tech will perform in actual games? Sure, the Lumen demo showcased genuine UE5 tech that some PS5 titles use, but what they didn't show is that these techniques come at the cost of image quality and frame rate. Why? Because real games have all the typical overhead—physics, AI, NPCs, and so on—unlike a perfectly scripted demo with narrowly focused variables and minimal interactivity. The only game that really lives up to the Lumen demo is the Hellblade sequel - but again, that "game" is really more of an extended tech demo.

alexrdavies

I'm not sure it's a "new" trend - they've covered A Plucky Squire and Penny's Big Breakaway recently - but it's always one I appreciate.

MaxedIt

Probably a question for Oliver, but I was wondering whether the PS5 Professional will have more bandwidth available for its HDMI port. Allowing for a signal without Chroma sub-sampling. And what about the VRR, has the range been increased beyond that 48 hz limit?

Someguyperson

I have a very strong feeling that the Strix Halo parts are effectively Steam Machine 2.0 parts, so I feel we'll see some offerings fairly soon.

Jonathan Hamilton

I certainly care. Horizon in particular bothers me with how Aloy will draw or stow her bow by just directly clipping through her own hair. It looks so awful, and it's made so much worse by how good the visuals are otherwise. John praised the lack of clipping in Final Fantasy XVI.

Engin Cetin

What games are you playing for pleasure these days?

Jonathan Hamilton

Sorry if this has been covered already, but do you know how PSSR might behave with 1080p displays? Will it upscale images to just 1080p, or will it produce a higher-res image then downsample to 1080p?

Someguyperson

The Strix Halo parts were designed for Steam Machines 2.0. Convince me otherwise.

Someguyperson

I went to the Steam hardware survey the other day and got an idea that turned out to be very interesting. I took the percentages of how many people had each 40 series GPU, multiplied that by the number of monthly active users (132 million), and then multiplied that by the MSRP of each product and I got some very telling numbers. With that methodology, the 40 series card with the most revenue is the 4070 with $2.23 billion in sales followed by the 4090 with $2.02 billion in sales. All this is just with a gaming workload too; you don't install a unique Steam account on a datacenter that uses 4090s. The two worst selling cards are the 4070 Ti at $1.33 billion and the 4080 at $1.17 billion. All 3 "Super" cards have sold less, but they've been on the market a lot less time, so it's not exactly a fair comparison. The 4070 Super has sold $1.13 billion though, while the card with the dumbest name ever (4070 Ti Super Deluxe Master Edition) sold a measly $496 million. Altogether, the 40 series has sold $12+ billion to Steam gamers alone. Do you guys agree that the 4070 and the 4090 are the two best 40 series cards? Do the numbers line up with how you would rank them? Do you think this is the right way to judge how the gaming market buys GPUs going forward? Numbers in a CSV Format: 4060, 0.0444, 300, 1758240000 4060 Ti, 0.0355, 400, 1874400000 4070, 0.0282, 600, 2233440000 4070 Ti, 0.0126, 800, 1330560000 4080, 0.0074, 1200, 1172160000 4090, 0.0096, 1600, 2027520000 4070 Super, 0.0143, 600, 1132560000 4070 Ti Super, 0.0047, 800, 496320000 4080 Super, 0.0055, 1000, 726000000

Most games simply use “maximum” or “ultra” for the highest settings. But what’s your favorite moniker for the top settings level in a game? I’m personally a fan of “psycho” in Cyberpunk.

Thomas Martinez

Hey DF gents, long time listener, new to the Patreon. Thanks for all of the outstanding content you all push out tirelessly, you all are masters of the trade. How often are you all consulted these days regarding feedback of gaming optimization/performance during development? We have been in an era for a while now where there’s a push to release titles before they’re perfected and patch them post launch but we’ve had such epic/unfixed failures like Jedi Survivor and DD2, to the point that they have to be hurting sales. Particularly with how much is revealed in your breakdowns/coverage and how popular your content is, you would think that developers would be lined up to give you all a peak at some early stage content. I know you all do receive this, particularly with indies, but do you all think there’s a market for some sort of consultation service from minds like yours? With the delay of Shadows, I’m hoping we are going to see a return to delays for the sake of perfection versus patches, then again with the new MH footage, who knows. Anyways, always a pleasure to watch you all. PS would love a good “ROG” from Rich.

Leftisthominid

The PS5 detachable disc drive appears to be out of stock in most places. Should we refer to this as Leadbetter's prophecy?

Leftisthominid

I am a platform agnostic gamer. I play on everything, but I prefer to pay multiplats on PC. However, when we find a broken PC port (e.g., Jedi: Survivor), I defer to playing a console version. However, I hate FSR (probably more than Richard hates the Sega Master System). Do you think justified hatred of FSR will help sell the PS5 Pro? Not having to ever see FSR is one of my main motivations for buying a PS5 Pro.

Jay Fischetti

Alex I know you have a good taste of retro pc gaming, it would be a lot of fun to see a df retro of sorts focusing on different directX versions and games that brought out their features over the years. My question would be whats the most directx 8, 9 and 10 games for you?

Leftisthominid

On a scale of 1-10, how depressing would rank this news weeks (with 1 being not depressing and 10 being a highly bespoke level of depressing). I ask because the first paragraph of the call for questions highlights a lot of bad news.

alexrdavies

Love the DF Retro: DX idea!

Sebastian

I remember that episode. Great section! In there they are discussing the possibility of cranking performance and ultra high refresh rates. My question is not about performance, but rather quality of potential modern games that would target SD resolutions. What would developers do differently? Where would they put all the „spare“ power of the hardware? Is there maybe a limit to perceivable quality in lower resolutions?

triggthediscovery

Favorite cartridge form factor? Any fans of the heckin chonkers of the MVS or the lithe Hu cards?

ChalupaBatman

A few years back xbox back compat team announced the were no longer focusing on Xbox and Xbox 360 titles and would be moving on to new unnamed efforts. Is it possible they have been working on next gen compatibility efforts? Could this be an indication xbox will partner with Nvidia and back compat team magic will be needed? I don’t see how any next gen console could see the largest generation leap ever within the current AMD portfolio.

videotechuk_

Hey DF, I hope you’re all doing well. With PS5 Pro shortly coming, do you think we’ll see an upgrade to the HDMI bandwidth that was previously limited to 32Gbps on base PS5 consoles? Xbox Series X still remains king with its HDMI bandwidth capped at 40Gbps. Now with 8K being a huge factor for the PS5 Pro, could we see a potential update to this for PS5 Pro? Thanks for your hard work

Salman

Armor/weapon clipping in the souls series has normalized clipping to me in general. But reading your post reminded me that all clipping (not just hair) used to drive me nuts in the past. Will probably notice it a lot more now...

tod weitzel

What do you think Microsoft is hearing back from the developers they're talking to about the dearth of third party support?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Why is nobody talking about Nintendo's secret radio device (CLO-001), that went through the FCC (as covered by the verge, and the FCC!) - please speculate as to what it might be gents!

RAVE_DAM0S

Hola Folks Xbox is looking for feedback from developers. You, at times, are in communication with developers. You also righteously evaluate the performance of games. Combined and it puts you in position to form opinions of your own. If Xbox came to you, what feedback would you provide? What feedback could you predict developers are providing? Cheers!

Aliasing Anonymous

Probably not strictly, since the chips they’re based on would’ve started design years ago before that decision was made. The prices however are likely to be a different story…

If the DF Crew had to guess at the “killer feature” of DLSS 4, what would you each wager, and why?

HelenX

Hello ! For a long time we have heard complaints about how the consoles are holding back PC games (though markedly less often now that minimum requirements have increased so much). I wonder if actually there might be truth to the opposite assertion: That console targetted games are pushing to include high end PC features on consoles that can't manage them, leading to serious compromises to image quality and image stability. Are developers chasing these features because customers have seen what high end pc's can do (on youtube and the like) or is it just that they incluide them because not matter how quality can suffer in motion it always looks fine on the screenshots that are a huge part of a game's marketing.

Xbox Ally Has Gone ROGue!

Do you think the reason behind the releasing of Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster partially comes from the bad state of the PC port when it came out? In many ways the remaster also feels like a re-port from Nixxes similar to Ark on Switch.

Given the PS5 Pro's introduction of PSSR technology, I wonder if it would have been feasible or beneficial for Sony to implement PSSR on a new base PS5 model, potentially positioning it as a more affordable option. This could have been accompanied by a gradual phasing out of the older base model. Would the benefits of PSSR on a more affordable base model outweigh the potential challenges of maintaining a three-tiered console ecosystem?

Hello guys, the exclusive edition Xbox Series X listed price is $599 only for an extra TB of space? What are the chances Microsoft upgraded anything involving the cpu/gpu? As discussed the Xbox consoles seem to be moving in the direction of a more pc like console. With the majority of Xbox owners being loyal fans I would like to say I’m an advocate for more of a pc like Xbox console and would willing pay the price point of a PS5 Pro for one. Is there a market for this? Thoughts?

Does Digital Foundry have any contacts at MoonHood? I thought The Midnight Walk was the most visually interesting demo at State of Play and would be curious to see a deep dive in how they achieved that clay look.

I just watched the Megalights demo. I have mixed feelings about Unreal Engine, but…damn. That was impressive. Any idea what they’re doing to create that kind of nuanced lighting on a PS5?

G'day Gents, Following up on the "consoles in 15 years" question from a couple of weeks ago, do you think we'll see any new methods of interaction in the gameplay space? The last big mainsteam methods were touch screens, motion controls and stereoscopic screens. Outside of VR the last two technologies died with the Wii/Kinect and the 3DS respectively, while touch has been only been utilised in the mobile space, with the best examples of the tech trapped on the DS and 3DS. I'd love to see even simple motion controls make some sort of comeback but i'm not holding out hope. Cheers!

Good point. I don't really know much about the development process for these chips in terms of at what point a specific chip is more locked in as it were or whether there remains wriggle room once the general underlying architecture is designed, to change plans. I guess it is possible that chips sandwiched between those corresponding to the ones touted for the 5080 & 5090 have been designed but with the news AMD weren't competing they aren't releasing them yet. Even more cynically they could even have realised they could relabel a chip they anticipated being say in the 5070 series as a 5080, though I am truly in the land of speculationsville I know, but nvidia does have some history with chip renaming - I'm looking at you, 12gb 4080....!

We won't know until we have the machine, or can do some testing at an event that has the machine.

Do you have any information as to whether the PS5 Pro supports Sonys Link audio out of the box for compatible headsets, or will Sonys headsets still need an adapter. The Portal has it built in but there hasn’t been any word from Sony on this. Any other quality of life improvements with the console outside of raw performance?

If this gets answered I hope Oliver adds an AI generated image of Frankenstein's monster in a suit in post

I might be too late submitting this but... You guys keep talking about next-gen Xbox's, whether console or handheld, being more PC-like and running a custom version of Windows optimized for gaming like SteamOS. So... uh... who exactly is going to *design* this OS? The team that brought us Windows 11, an OS with so many UI annoyances they had to walk most of the changes back... or the team that brought us the perpetually broken Xbox App? Either way, I don't see this ending well...

DukeBlueBalls

Hello gents, if/when the next-gen Xboxes support Steam. Do you think Playstation will pull their games off Steam or patch the games to disable them on Xbox? Would the latter be grounds for class action?

Kaepora

Sure, but my point is more focused on what would happen if companies required an online verification for every disc every time is inserted, which is a likely scenario in the mid-long term regarding the current state of things to be honest.

Hello DF, love the details that the team always provides. With the PS5 Pro a month away. Sony has done a poor job showcasing what the PS5 Pro is capable of. Do you think we will see some deep dives from Sony or outlets such as yourself? Gamers would love benchmarks with Frame rates unlocked on the PS5 Pro. What kind of coverage would the Digital Foundry team provide given the chance?

Hello all! ✌🏻I just finished Oliver's new PS5 Professional video. PSSR looks great and far superior to what is indeed FSR's 3rd iteration!! I'm curious what DF would do if you were steering the Xbox ship? Should MS/XB give AMD a Scrooge McDuck pool of cash to improve FSR? If they haven’t been developing their own upscaling for the last 2+ years what other course could they chart? Thanks as always! Cheers! *Pröst! 🍻🇩🇪 For Alex*

Rich!! We share a dream! 🏆 A Remaster/Re-make of AC Unity! Let's pretend for a moment that dreams do come true- What would be some key improvements you'd like to see? Which modern techniques would be most transformational? The baked lighting was superb for its time imo. But RT lighting in Unity!? Thoughts on the rest? We could get a lotta milage with it back in the GPU/CPU DFbench-suite for another 6yrs 🤣

Will any of you be testing Taki Udon/Retro Remake’s new OLED screen replacement kit for the Switch Lite? I’d love to hear some DF impressions of this display and ease of installation!

PS5 is capable of 4K HDR with RGB. It’s likely a capability issue with your TV. I have a Hisense U8N and that’s what it displays by default. An increase in HDMI bandwidth won’t really make any difference this generation cause the only thing Xbox can do that PS5 can’t is 10bit HDR at 4k120. 99% of games with 120Hz mode are running at 1080p which only requires 14Gbps of bandwidth. And you only need 24Gbps for 12bit 4k60 RGB/4:4:4. The thing I want to know is when Xbox‘s exclusive Dolby vision deal ends… hopefully on November 7 lol. And I’m not sure if the extended VRR window will matter on the Pro cause I’m hoping no game drops below 48fps

MaxedIt

While I hope you are right about games not dropping below 48fps, the lack of a substantial upgrade to the CPU makes me a bit doubtful of that. So it would be nice if the VRR range is also a little increased. In regards to the HDMI bandwidth thing, it is also used for the 40 FPS modes as that requires the 120hz mode. And while the game may be running at a lower internal resolution, this could still be within a 4k container. In this scenario the PS5 is outputting a compressed chroma sub sampled image. And while not a big deal, it would be a nice to have the best possible uncompressed output in all circumstances.

David Appleseed

Perhaps that all the disc drives sold out is another sign in itself?

Hi DF! I’d really appreciate it if anyone, especially John, could highlight some good games that aren't super popular. I'm looking for indie projects, not the big triple-A titles. Thanks!
