Hi there everyone, first of all - some news. The PS5 Pro console review is now available for download on digitalfoundry.net. We received the hardware last Thursday and then had just five working days to put something together. We aimed high - too high perhaps - and mistakes were made. A version of the video went live for a few moments with material that had a separate embargo, so we had to pull that version, re-export another one and get that up ASAP. At that point, we could encode the download versions. All told, a highly stressful day, but I've taken a look at some of the other Pro reviews out there and I think pushing hard probably turned out for the best in the end. Still, let's move on!

DF Direct Weekly #188 is now in the planning phase and we will record tomorrow. We may discuss the Pro review reactions, we'll definitely be talking about Nintendo's confirmation of Switch 2 back compat and we'll also be talking about the embargoed stuff we couldn't talk about in the Pro review. Also, as I write this, Death Stranding has been released for Xbox consoles (!) for £18 no less (!!)

We're still getting topics together so we may well be commenting on the PS5 Pro teardown video that emerged earlier - but really, we're game for anything in the world of gaming technology news, so please feel to suggest Direct topics and of course, to put forward any questions you have. Please try to make them short - the Q&A format isn't good for multi-paragraph essays!

We're still figuring out the panel, but chances are Alex and I will be there. Cut-off for questions is 8am GMT Friday morning.

I watched your unboxing video and think the PS5 Pro looks quite nice but why is it still so bloody tall? I feel like they're reducing the wrong dimensions here. Is the PS6 just going to be a really long stick?

Hello, all, long time enjoyer of your content here ! Question to you monitors lovers : I am considering an OLED monitor for the holidays sales period. Do you think burn-in is really to be feared for 50/50 work/gaming usage ? (with normal precautions ?) Is text clarity a big problem (aiming at 32 inches, 4K) on latest QD-OLED panel generations ? Thanks for your time ! Lovely content always.

Hi DF team! With the PS5 pro being released, another specification of machine for devs to make ports for, do you think this will make the series S development even more dire than before? The S seems to be the black sheep of the gen, and is quite commonly blamed for holding back this generation. I can't see anything getting better with the pro just being released. Keep up the great work.

Hi DF Team! Due to new Californian law, Steam now displays a banner during checkout to make it clear that you are buying a license and do not own the software. My question to the team is on your thoughts of the current state of games ownership/preservation within the context of PC gaming? All the talk of losing digital games access seems to be focused on the consoles, but what if services like GOG or Steam etc ever disappeared? Many games on Steam are indeed DRM free but many are not! Thanks for your thoughts

ConcreteLlama

As part of the gaming media you receive early access to a lot of products, but the company can put limits on what you are and aren't allowed to show. How do you keep track of this, especially in a freeform show like DF Direct? Does someone off camera sit in the corner of the room with an air horn or do you just edit out any accidental slips in post? Have you had any near misses or accidentally let slip something you shouldn't?

Thomas Martinez

What price point do you think is most optimal for switch 2? How do you all will think it will perform now that the deck is such a strong competitor? A lot of people bought the switch to compliment their home console/gaming pc. I believe the deck wins now for that demand.

DezzyD

Hi gents, it's just been announced that Death Stranding is coming to the Xbox Series consoles, meaning that the Decima Engine is now compatible with Xbox hardware. This has implications for Sony potentially licencagnosticut to multiplatform developers. Do you believe such a thing could happen and if so is it something you would like to see?

HelenX

Hello One and All ! Since we seem to be an era of specialist acceleration rather than simple growth in computing power, what kind of features do would expect or would most like to see in the future ? Seeing something of how AI and computer modelling is used in the world of cosmetics and fashion and also noticing how significant an upgrade the motion capture in Horizon remastered was I would very much like to see these tools for automatically creating AI generated realistic minor skin and cloth motion brought into gaming. Making cut scenes looks good is such a labour and artist intensive task and tools to assist with this already exist so it seems like such natural development. My big wish though would be for large-scale fluid simulation to become GPU accelerated enough for real-time use. Fluid (not just water) modelling acceleration has such enormous industrial and scientific applications that AMD & NVIDA must surely be have researching such improvements as a priority for a long time now. Large scale fluid simulations could be transformative for gameplay

What are your prospects regarding PS3 emulation on the PS5 Pro? Will we finally see PS3 classics coming back or would that only be feasible on the (speculative) Playstation 6? Thanks for all the content!

Macky Dee

It likely got lost in the PS5 Pro rush, but did the team get to test the Monster Hunter Wilds beta? The PS5 Performance mode offered maybe the worst image quality I've seen in years, and didn't feel that responsive either. PC version fared quite a bit better on a 3070 rig - not quite up to an even 60FPS in this build, but it was a lot more responsive and benefited tremendously from DLSS. It's a proper beta so there's obviously time for optimisation before release next year, but just wondering if the DF team had the chance to give it a look and figure out what's happening with it and the RE Engine?

David Laszlo

Hey DF, With the rework of the 9800X3D (3D cache is under the CPU cores for better heat dissipation), do you think this makes the X3D processor line of AMD viable for the next gen gaming consoles? In the end they low powered high end, and rather low heat generator parts. I am just not sure how well they would work with the console architectures. Thanks!

Ildar Nurislamov

Hi! Regarding PS5 Pro CPU 10% boost. From your review i got the idea that Game Boost mode comes with 10% CPU Boost. But for PS5 Upgraded game that looks like opt-in feature. Do you consider possibility that BG3 developers haven't enabled this mode - and that explains quite modest results there. Is that possible to know that for sure somehow? Regarding 16.7TF and INT4 support. From that spec you've made guess that since TF numbers has not be scaled by 2x factor – than PS5 pro doesn't support INT4. But INT4 support cannot increase TF number, because it is Integer, not Float. So it is still quite possible that PS5 Pro supports INT4 and lets say Horizon new upscaler uses it. So it all quite confusing: Is PSSR implemented via custom silicon or with INT4? Can other developers utilize the same silicon to implement they own upscalers or frame generators?

goregutz

Hi DF guys. You stated in the previous DF direct that the PS4 pro made more sense than the PS5 pro. I severely disagree. While I understand how PS4 pro accommodater for those with 4k screens but PS5 would have been fine without it. The PS6 would be INFERIOR without the PS5 professional because Sony needs a few years of data to improve P(i)SS(e)R. We all saw how it took years for DLSS to get to the quality it offers now. Thoughts? Also, what do you think about a potential PSSA, similar to DLAA for the most pristine quality?

Question Generated By JensenGPT

After seeing the pretty disappointing performance in Alan Wake 2's performance mode on PS5 Pro, often getting lower framerates than the base PS5's performance mode, I was thinking about how the target upscaling resolution of 4k may be too high and that perhaps the PS5 Pro version of Alan Wake 2 should have kept the same target resolution of 1440p as the base PS5 version. It theoretically still should have been a big visual improvement. But then I got to thinking - I don't think we've seen any games yet where PSSR is upscaling to 1440p, or anything besides 4k for that matter. Is it possible that the reason Remedy is upscaling to 4k in Alan Wake 2's PS5 Pro performance mode, despite the GPU overhead clearly not being there, is because they don't have a choice and PSSR only allows you to upscale to 4k? Have any developers or Sony themselves said anything about how versatile PSSR actually is?

Jonathan Thomassen

Switch Successor backwards compatibility: How likely do you think it is that we will see performance improvements and other enhancements on a new machine? In the past Nintendo has always offered us back-compat without enhancements (GC on Wii, Wii on Wii U). Is there any reason to think things could be different this time?

Abandoned Walnut

Greetings Gents. Does the ps5 pro tell us anything about possible rdna 4 performance!?

Iuri Grangeiro

Hi DF! I have been noticing, especially surrounding the PS5 professional coverage, that the sentiment has been very adversarial in comments - where any proposition that there is a significant improvement is quickly shut down with weird claims that "that's what the PS5 should have been all along" or that "you can only notice it with zooms". While I fundamentally agree with the likely sentiment behind these claims: the PS5 pro is very expensive and it doesn't come with the accessories "professional" users come to expect, I certainly don't feel represented by their line of thinking, and I imagine neither do you guys. Do you guys feel like a more extended discussion of these specific arguments, as well as a deeper analysis of "who is this console for?" Might address the sentiment? It's obvious the final "is it worth it?" Question can't be addressed by you guys directly, but I feel like there are plenty of factors around it that could - tv size and distance come to mind. Do you guys have any plans on doing a deeper dive in these factors?

Rich

"Made more sense" TO WHOM? Sony, or the consumer? DF's answer is about the latter, your reason is more about the former.

S1kkZ

hello there fellow humans. one thing that keeps me from buying a pro right now (aside from the ABSURD european price), is the lack of options that some pro patches provide. ff7 rebirth now lacks the quality mode (incl. the visual enhancements) and some game have a botched PSSR implementation. i would prefer to not have features taken away from me and/or having a botched pro patch, with no way of going back. do you think this will be a problem in the future or will there be more options, once developers have more time to deliver pro updates?

Iuri Grangeiro

Hello gents! A few games were highly requested, yet missing from the PS5 pro coverage - UE5 low res juggernauts especially. Is there a reason for that? Or "there's only so much you can do in a week"?

LittleMac

With the Switch 2 being backwards compatible, what are the chances it also has a boost mode?

Paul Trainor

Hi Df, Why do we not see Epic release current unreal engine ports of unreal tournament 99, 2003 etc? Thanks Paul

Bulbous_Bow

I think the issue is people want to live in a fantasy world where every developer is as talented and thorough in their optimisation work as Guerilla or Insomniac. And in a way they’re right, if that was the case the Pro might have less point (although we’re yet to see what these developers can do with it on a game developed with the Pro in mind). But in reality, UE5 is what it is; FromSoft and Atlus are who they are; and there will always be developers that make weird decisions like Square’s solution to upscaling in FF7Rebirth. My feeling is it’s less that the developers behind these games are all incompetent (although there are specific examples of incompetence 😂) and more that Insomniac and Guerilla are exceptional. The reality is, if you want to play these games at good frame rates and reasonably high resolutions something like the Pro is helpful.

DaJaCo (Dan)

QD-OLED has slightly better panel life in general than traditional W-OLED because it has a single pixel substrate colour (blue), which means they can layer up the substrate with quite a lot of redundancy built-in relative to traditional subpixel materials. i.e. "there's a shedload of blue to burn through". The colours are formed from the pure blue backlight by the quantum dot colour filters.

Bulbous_Bow

If I run Netflix or iPlayer PS4 apps through my Pro can they - or could they theoretically - benefit from PS4 image enchantment? #ClutchingAtStraws

Jonny_5a

The Switch during its time had a number of surprising ports that on paper shouldn’t be playable - e.g, Witcher/Doom. What games would you call an ‘Impossible Port’ for Switch 2: The Switchquel?

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

How does the PS5 Pro smell? Is it as intoxicating as the Steam Deck vent, or boring corporate PS5 plastic?

7SAN

Hi DF Gents, I’m a huge fan of the Uncharted franchise. What would PS5 Pro raw power or game boost do to Legacy of Thieves Collection (4 & Lost Legacy PS5 Games)? Also, regarding the outcome of the Pro's HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, can this be a software limitation this time around? I'm not sure if you used a device that can measure the bandwidth or looked at a TV prompt to show HDMI Gbps per lane (e.g., pressing rapidly the green button on the LG TV remote).

Songmin Lee

Hello DF team! I just finished watching your PS5 Pro review and I really liked it. However there was one thing I was curious about yet was not in the review: how does PS4 games with PS5 specific enhancements perform on PS5 Pro? For example, Mass Effect Legendary Edition has 120fps mode when run on PS5 even though it is PS4 BC game, and if I remember correctly, in some scenarios the framerate drops to 90-100fps range. Thank you!

Nolasco

Evening my DF Compadres. Is there a way for the Ps5 pro with a stronger GPU to work around games that are CPU heavy? Thank you for your time and hard work. P.S Love the way you peeled that Pro unit Rich 😍

Fernando Collazo

Hi DF team! I noticed that it was mentioned that FF16 doesn’t have a locked 60fps on the PS5 pro, but I wanted to ask if the visual quality looks better considering that dynamic resolution is in place. Thanks for all of your hard work!

Rich

A huge part of the problem are people who don't even game making comments on social media based on compressed youtube footage. These comments aren't representative of real life console gamers looking at real 4K screens.

FrametimeSommelier

Hi Gentlemen! The new AMD Ryzen 9800X3D seems to be the gaming CPU to have. In your opinion, when would you recommend an upgrade? Upgrading from what CPU gen (Intel and AMD). Considering gaming only, would you recommend an upgrade from a 12900K/13700K level performance? Or would it only making sense when coming from older gen CPUs? Also, is Intel screwed or do you think we will see a dedicated Intel gaming CPU in this or in the next generation?

Holy Sock

Hi DF! Will the PS5 Pro improve input latency for playing games like Tekken 8 or SF6? Thanks!

Simplex

Hi gents, anyone played Metro Awakening VR? Any improvements to VR games on the Quintuple Professional?

Iuri Grangeiro

I think most real gamers looking at real 4k screens are sitting too far from their screen to discern some of the differences DF shows. I've more than once gone to someone's house, flipped back and fourth between performance and quality modes, and neither of us could tell the difference in IQ. I don't think these comments are coming from non gamers, I think they're coming from misguided gamers.

Dennis Löfgren

Hey DF! Does PS5 Pro do anything for PSVR2 games? Is GT7 improved at all? Thanks!

Jonathan Hamilton

Regarding backwards compatibility for Switch titles, Nintendo’s report only mentions software compatibility. How likely is it that the Switch’s successor will not accept Switch cartridges?

Liar of Partinel

Given how the new "PS4 image enhancement" only applies to games with a 1080p output, why is it not an option on the PS5 Amateur? Is a 16 tflop GPU really necessary to run that filter?

1040STF

As you said last week, Nintendo's first party games are usually flawless on a technical level but it seems it's no longer the case since a few months. We already talked a few DF Directs ago that maybe those games were supposed to launch on Switch 2 as a lot of rumors in 2023 stated the console was originally supposed to launch in 2024, "as soon as march if possible" if I remember correctly. To be fair, we might never know if that's true. But true or not, the games are here and the actual hardware can't follow up. Do you think Nintendo should have postponed those games for the release of Switch 2? Or are they right to release them now to fill the last year of the console with great pace? I remember the pace of releases slowing down a lot on Wii the year before the release of the Wii U, which received many criticism: maybe they didn't want to re-create that bad pre-launch ramp?

Songmin Lee

Ah well. I guess I automatically assumed that PS5 supports 120hz because xbox supports it. Thanks for the info.

framedr_pped

Hello you beautiful people of the Digital Foundry! Long time viewer / first time supporter here. With all the Switch 2 talk I was wondering if and when there will be an updated version of the Steam Deck? What is on your wishlist for a potential Steam Deck 2? Cheers! Exclamation point.

Zero

Good day, Gents! In games like Alan Wake 2 and Dragon's Dogma 2, which have more spotty PSSR utilization, could we expect to see this improved via software patches over the Pros' life? Or is it going to be pretty hardware-locked, and we won't see something better until the PS6? Good luck with all the coverage!

Lux

Hello Digital Founders! As reported by Insider Gaming it seems that Death Strading's IP has been bought by Kojima Productions from Sony. Death Stranding: Director's Cut Switch 2 port when? Cheers!

Lux

Very unlikely

Songmin Lee

Now that I think about it, still there are games like Until Dawn that drops frame on PS5. Wonder how they run on the Pro.

Leftisthominid

Hello there in the Foundry. I was wondering, have you ever tried to a use a machine learning approach to do your pixel counting for you?

Leftisthominid

Richard, Oliver, John, Audie, and all others involved, I appreciate your use of your personal Boost Modes to get out that hour long review yesterday. Also, I thought Audie was in Richard's basement?

Leftisthominid

I am debating to upgrading my RTX 3080 to an RTX 5070/80 tier GPU whenever those release, but I was wondering if I should be concerned about CPU bottlenecks. My current CPU is a in i7 11700KF, so upgrading the CPU basically means a full new build. What are your thoughts?

(Don’t be a) Richard

It’s all good and well that the PS5 Pro was lighter and smaller than the original chunker unit, but would it have killed Sony to have kept a handle on the box? It was much easier carting my original console into the store to trade in, than carrying the new one out. Maybe they can fix this travesty with the PS6. Also, surely I wasn’t the only one to cringe watching Rich shred his box up.

John Crowley

G'day fellas, With the Super Nintendo Switch on the horizon, do you think you'll start in corporating Steam Deck analysis into your coverage of multi platform games or does the dynamism of the system and performance (e.g single updates cutting frame times significantly) scare off reporting due to fear of becoming outdated too quickly? Cheers lads

DaJaCo (Dan)

I think they should go full gamecube and put one on the console!

DaJaCo (Dan)

I think Remedy need to tweak their motion blur and post processing effects to work better with PSSR - and introduce a 40fps mode for the ray traced option. This would be the ideal target for the game on PRO .. it is a game that ray tracing adds a lot to.. and 40fps is likely achievable with a bit more work.

FrametimeSommelier

This question is mainly for Alex (but the other DF guys are invited to chime in as well). Which game engine is currently the most exciting one, when it comes to performance and state of the art tech features? If you learn that an upcoming game has a certain engine, which one creates that tingle of excitement and makes you say "Hell yeah, can't wait to get my hands on that".

DaJaCo (Dan)

Just wear your high heels when you change disk like most people.

scud

Hey chaps, If you could resurrect any dead franchise for a new entry (not a sequel or remake) specifically to take advantage of current tech, which titles would you pick, and why? I'd go with Thief for raytraced lighting based stealth where you can put out or move any light source, close curtains, etc, as well as having to navigate not just direct light sources but areas lit by bounce light. I'd also love to see it taken into account that a strong light source you have placed will affect your enemies' night vision, allowing you to hide in darker areas more effectively. Honestly, I just want a new Thief game and will justify it any way I can.

DaJaCo (Dan)

This week there have been more details emerging that apparently the Switch 2 supports mesh shaders. Is there anything unique about Nvidia hardware in terms of how it accelerates mesh shaders - and how do you think Nintendo would utilize this feature set? Could this be yet another differentiating "feature" in a console that's looking relatively weak in terms of raw horsepower, but incredibly strong in terms of having the 'modern' Nvidia feature set on console?

gruntelite

Hello Panel, How do you foresee the Xbox Series S faring in cross-gen games for the next generation compared to the Xbox One S in cross-gen games this generation?

TMoney58

Time to move on to 9700x3D, Alex and John? With respect to the PS5 Professional, AMD just released the most impressive piece of gaming hardware all year, right?

The Invisible Man

Hi DF Team, with John’s love for playing games on CRT’s I was wondering if John owns the ultimate CRT gaming experience…. An arcade cabinet!? Is there a darkened basement in John’s house where such arcade rarities from the 80’s and 90’s exist??

Jimbojones

Kind of disappointing to see Sega delisting some of their classic games. The Megadrive collection wasn't the best way to experience these games (I had the Switch version and the input lag was dreadful) and the Dreamcast stuff all seems to be PS360 era ports. You think these will get a modern repack? Maybe they can include Skies of Arcadia next time *inhales hopium*

Leftisthominid

As you may know, there are dark times ahead in the US, so I was wondering, what are your comfort-games that you escape to when the world is falling apart around you?

Daniel M

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if you are going to be testing PSVR2 games for performance on Pro? Sony have been fairly quiet on whether the console will provide any sort of boost to PSVR2 title.

Peter

Having recently got a steam deck, it's highlights even more to me what a detriment windows is to the overall PC experience for gaming. Is it feasible for Steam to launch an OS for PC, similar to whats on the Steam Deck? As a follow up to this, could a launcher like Steam, automatically compile shaders as or after it installs a game, even if the developer has not introduced a shader comp step? This would go a long way to mitigate #stutter struggle in those games that present it.... UE

Pol Kallamata

What do you think are the most important elements of games released on both PC and console that ensure that they age/ scale beautifully over time and get better when new hardware is released?

Mr Bespoke

Hi DF! So the there's been a shadow drop on Death Stranding on the Xbox Series X and was wondering if you guys have had a go of it yet and can give us a preview of on your thoughts on how its run on a Series X and will it be shunned by a PS Quintuple PRO update down the line? Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

Paul Paster

when considering a future PC build for PS3 emulation, is CPU or GPU power a bigger priority? I currently get very nice performance out of a Ryzen 5 5600 and RTX 3060ti for some third party games and ps3 remasters but SPU-intensive exclusives (e.g. the Killzones) are unplayable. Where should I look for a bigger upgrade in the future?

Alan

Hi Team What are your views and thoughts on the Apple M4 chip for gaming, is Apple still targeting games and gaming?

Alan

Hi Foundry Foremen! There has been a recent election apparently, if you were thrust into a position of power at a big games developer or publisher what would you do or change to get gaming out of its current situation, spiraling budgets, cyclical job losses and disillusioned gamers etc.

Someguyperson

Looking at just how good all the X3D AMD CPUs are now, how likely do you think the PS6 will have an X3D cache die bonded to the SoC? If that does indeed come to pass, how could Intel respond when all "next gen" games are designed to target a CPU with mountains of cache?

Someguyperson

I liked your PS5 Pro unboxing video, but I feel you could have spent more time on the box part, which is what we all want to see. New silicon wrapped up in plastic? Nobody cares about that. I want to know just how thick the cardstock is. How white is the white box inside the box? How high is the printing quality of the images on the box? What is the aroma of the box? How does the box sit on the palate? I was hoping you would wax lyrical about these topics for something like 3 hours, but unfortunately you spent much more time talking about the console itself.

Someguyperson

What do you guys make of Nintendo confirming aspects of an unreleased console (backwards compatibility)? Is this the first time features of a console have been listed out by a manufacturer before the product has even been announced? Why does Nintendo keep this ruse up when everyone knows there will be a Switch 2 coming out soon?

Someguyperson

Do you guys think AVX2 support for ARM CPUs in Windows will help the current ARM on Windows situation?

Someguyperson

You should look for AVX512 support on the CPU first & foremost. The newest AMD CPUs should provide the best experience for that. I don't think the AM4 platform has anything that would suit your use case, so you'll probably need to move to a new motherboard as well.

DudleyTheGentleman

Hi DF team, in a hypothetical future where AI based frame generation successfully moves from interpolation to extrapolation, would this effectively decouple input latency from native frame rate? If so, would native frame rate really matter as much, if at all? My guess would be that more of the GPU silicon be dedicated to building the highest quality base image to extrapolate from, instead of maintaining a high native frame rate.

Kaveh Ghorbati

Hey guys, would running 30hz on a 240hz monitor create an octuple image effect? Gsync doesn't go that low does it? I was thinking about getting a Corsair OLED for gta6, but I'm afraid

Ryan Luker

Hello Folks! Recently, we have been seeing some of Sony's porting studios taking on remastering projects, and it got me wondering if Sony feels like they are running out of profitable PS4/PS5 games to port to PC? Could we see Sony use these in-house porting studios for other means in the future? (New IP and games might be a stretch given how they are set up people wise, but maybe day and date PC releases are in the future?)

Ryan Luker

Nintendo's recent quarterly earnings report mentioned this a bit, they are depending more on 3rd party studios to build up games instead of doing massive hiring sprees (or buying game developers outright) to do get more first party output. I think the decrease in quality would be expected from this kinda "off-shoring" but that is just my opinion, and the games are not "hidious" from these 3rd party developers but I would say they are not "nintendo" first party quality on average.

Napoleon Blownapart

Hello DF! I’ve been using a 27” OLED 1440p monitor for my PS5 with the output set to 4K thinking it may benefit from down sampling. But then it dawned on me that it might have a negative impact since it’s not a 1:1 pixel match. Are there disadvantages to downsampling from 4K to 1440? Thanks!

Ryan Luker

I guess it depends on how much effort Nintendo takes to go back and touchup games? Some with unlocked framerates would see the biggest wins with little effort but afaik DRS is not too common on switch as that would also be considered if they just straight run the games with more power. I guess PC emulation of the switch might be a place to look for what could be possible with just straight more power?

Ryan Luker

Someone in the youtube comments speculated that ps5 pro might be rdna 2 with the smaller tsmc 4nm chip, and that is how they get the performance boost? (I doubt this though as the machine learning PSSR was on chip as far as we know right?)

Ryan Luker

Valve has mentioned that they wont do Steam Deck 2 until they see the right performance to power increase from the mobile chip market, might need to wait 1-2 more years for a steam deck successor . They are probably also waiting for FSR4 as that might be very nice on a handheld and increase the longevity quite a bit! (switch 2 with dlss could be a nice preview...)

Ryan Luker

I think bazzite is the closest to what you are asking for. ATM Valve is working on the software side to get other handhelds able to use Steam OS (nvidia, intel, arm gpu support specifically) from what I saw in GitHub etc. Once that work is done, a Desktop version of SteamOS (plus all the nice deck features will pause n wake, shader cache downloads, etc) is probably getting close.

Ryan Luker

With the cross generation time periods probably getting longer, should mid-gen refresh buyers expect / demand longer periods of time that their purchase gets the latest and greatest games? (700 bones is a lot to plunk down if you are only getting 2–4 years of support, vs PS5 at launch 4 years ago looks great at 500!)

Abhi

Could we see the idea of ssd as virtual memory in this gen or next gen? There was an In Theory vid from Richard on it and it was hinted at from PS & Xbox during Xbox series & ps5 presentations

sero

What is your best guess as to why Game Boost is falling short so significantly of the proclaimed 45% boost to raster performance in the PS5 Pro? Do you think Sony is limiting raster power for non-professional titles, or was the 45% figure just a best case scenario that will only apply to a select few titles?

sero

Could the PS5 pro not managing to improve raytracing performance in non pro-enhanced titles be indicative of a future where performance gains to older gen software on newer hardware will not be as straightforward as it might have been for the PS4 to PS5 transition?

Abandoned Walnut

I'd be surprised if that was the case but confess I've not done much research / perusal of what the pros underlying architecture is.

David

Sorry in advance for that long question, gents!A few months ago in of your directs (I tried digging but couldn't find it anymore) you were praising Microsoft over Sony for their implentation of VRR (or similar technical implentations). Back then one of my biggest annoyances came to my mind which still annoys mr and isn't fixed/changed after all these Series X/S years. Do you know why Microsoft ties their HDR to their 4k setting? With that way you're not able to use Gaming monitors or HDMI 2.0 (eg my LG Oled B8) with 1080p/1440p 120hz with HDR because you have to tick "allow 4k". With that you'll only get 4k/60hdr or 1080p/1440p/120 without hdr. You have to switch manually on a game to game basis. It's clearly no technical limitation because with Windows (PS5 propably too?) you can get that to work even with HDMI 2.0. Maybe you can enlighten us why Microsoft is doing that or can bring that issue up to Microsoft. I would love to play 120hz games (CoD, rocket League,...) with HDR.

DaJaCo (Dan)

After some leaks in the PC code that suggested PSSR was being added to Silent Hill 2, today I boot up my brand spanking new PS5 Pro to see it listed as "Enhanced" on the playstation store. Any insights into what bells and whistles have been added?

Diego ElRey

Hello DF, With the arrival of the 9800X3D, and the very positive reviews that it is indeed the new best gaming CPU, will that become the CPU used for high end PC gaming benchmarks?

Xbox Ally Has Gone ROGue!

If John is getting a Meta Quest 3S, I would love to hear his opinion on it against Meta Quest 3, especially how the normal lens downgrade will affect the image clarity compared to the Pancake lens!

sero

The First Descendant seems to be unique in that it supports both PSSR and FSR3 frame generation. Taking this for a spin just now, I think I stumbled on an interesting behaviour where FG actually seems to negate some of the temporal instability that PSSR seems to have around fine details like fences. I know you guys are inundated with professional work, but perhaps this could be an interesting case to look at?

Hey guys! With the Switch 2 back compat confirmation, do you think we'll get next-gen patches for Switch 1 first party games?

Athanasius19

Have you guys checked out the two different AA modes in GoW Ragnarok?!? It’s crazy how heavy PSSR is. Taau gets like 10-20 frames more in the same mode as opposed to PSSR on.

AfreemTheDream

Greetings, Foundrymen! Do you think the dock of the Switch 2 will have a much more impactful effect on the console than the Switch dock had? Cheers!

Someguyperson

My great speculation regarding the Switch 2 was that they'll put a big fan in there so the Switch 2 can clock a lot higher in docked mode, but the leaked renders of the Switch 2 shell threw some cold water on that idea. If I had to take an educated guess at this point, I would say you might get DLSS Ultra Performance to upscale a game for a TV, but that's about it. I wouldn't expect much.

Someguyperson

Nintendo already showed Breath of the Wild at 4k with upscaling, so I think they will, but it will probably be a limited selection.

Someguyperson

That will be the case somewhat in the GPU department, but the CPU improvements to the potential PS6 should be extremely beneficial to older games, so it just depends on how a game is limited on PS5.

Someguyperson

There will always be a latency penalty when moving data to & from an SSD vs. RAM, so it could be used, but "virtual memory" isn't the greatest idea there. Devs can stream in orders of magnitude more data with this generation of consoles, but nobody seems to be stressing the limits of that just yet, so I would say there's a lot more to be gained even without a hardware update.

Someguyperson

It really depends on how performant everything is at 5-8 watts of power though. As Rich found in his experiment of hypothetical Switch 2 performance, just because a GPU feature is supported doesn't mean it will run well. The proof is really in the pudding there and we'll just have to see how performant Nintendo can make these features when they finally release some footage.

Someguyperson

Just get bigger hands and then it's easier to carry.

Someguyperson

If you want to play games at max settings & a 4k resolution with 60ish FPS, the GPU upgrade might be worth it. If you play at 1440p or 1080p and you want to hit 144 Hz or 240 Hz, a CPU upgrade is probably more impactful.

Someguyperson

I think these games would have been in the "cross gen" period, where they're perfectly playable on OG Switch, but they would be best on Switch 2. I think the correct plan was to release the games as they're ready and not to hold anything back, particularly because of backwards compatibility.

Someguyperson

Nintendo allowed people to use GBA carts in their DS and I fully expect the same type of backwards compatibility here.

Someguyperson

You should really only upgrade any part of your PC when you feel an aspect being a particularly bad bottleneck. There will always be something better next year and more so the year after that, so you should always hang onto your current setup until it becomes a limiting factor.

Someguyperson

How appealing does DLSS 1.0 upscaling sound to you? Because that might be about it.

Someguyperson

What was your CPU? I played the PC beta with a 5800x3D and a 2060 Super and I was 100% GPU bound. There were broken settings (VRS caused all the water to disappear when you moved the camera) and the settings didn't actually change all the way until you rebooted the game. I thought the game looked like it was truly on potato mode with lower settings, but when you cranked the settings up a bit it looked fine. This game is going to be very CPU heavy and most people simply aren't accustomed to that, so there will be a lot of wining from people on message boards about why their older CPU isn't good enough.

Question for John or Oli. Game preservation’s always a hot topic, from Emulation to management of digital store front to everything in between. With all the talk of Switch 2 having backwards compatibility, has anyone thought to do a taste test on a 2017 Switch cartridge to see if the flavour profile has been preserved over the past 7-8 years, compared to a 2024 cartridge. Will future generations be able to enjoy the potent taste of a Switch cartridge, or is that something that too will be lost to time?

Someguyperson

Burn-in isn't a concern unless you crank the brightness up all the way and have the screen sit on a bunch of static images the whole time. The biggest issue I have with my 42" LG C3 "monitor " is how Windows doesn't correctly render to non RGB/RBG stripe panels. WOLED & QD- OLED have different color fringing on specific elements that simply can't be fixed without Microsoft updating how they render to a screen. On LG panels, yellow elements have green color fringing on one side and red color fringing on the other side and I notice it EVERY SINGE TIME I look at the screen. Other than that, it's the best monitor I've ever had, so you win some & you lose some. Black text on a white background is 100% fine though. Just don't do full yellow against a white background.

Hi DF crew! Do you think we’ll see any improvements to games on PS5 when developers prepare the Pro updates? I still think FFVII Rebirth’s image quality could easily be improved on the base unit. Working ona Pro patch gives developers an opportunity to see if anything else can be „fixed” on PS5 too, or is it just my wishful thinking? Cheers!

Hey Foundry-Men! Do you think AMD could utilise SONY’s know-how on PSSR when building their ML component for their next PC GPUs? Cheers!

VeryProfessionalDodo

If you’re talking about a console plugged in to that monitor, you wouldn’t be able to use 240hz, nor G-Sync. Also, in order to take advantage of low frame rate compensation, it would still fall to the developers in case of PS5 One thing to keep in mind is that there’s no point in buying tech based on what’s coming in the future. GTA VI is apparently targeting a fall release, so if you’re waiting for that game in particular, you can still wait a bit longer. In the meantime, other panels will appear, possibly cheaper as well

12700K here. There were definitely issues with the PC version, some of which you'd hope would be improved between now and release. But still a night and day difference with the PS5 build, though some of the game assets and lighting do make it look fairly muddy overall at times.

Selogon

Thanks for taking the time to reply with some thoughts! I think I will not worry overmuch about burn-in, there seems to be quite a bit of stuff built in those monitors to combat it without too much effort. And I know we cannot get everything, and compared to my OK 1440p VA, I will lose a bit of clarity, but I'm as I understand it, at 4K, this would not be the biggest issue. We'll see, I suppose!

KevWatch

Hi gang! I got my Pro on release date and immediately checked out a few games. In your review you mentioned Dragon’s Dogma 2 and PiSSR having trouble resolving RT bounces. Star Wars Outlaws seems like it has the exact same issue but to a greater degree. The image quality is incredibly unstable. Could PiSSR have issues with RT in general? If so, could this be improved upon?

Graczdari

Hello Digital Foundry team. Are you guys disappointed with the PS5 Pro? In my opinion, compared to the PS4 Pro, this console is a failure. The PS4 Pro was a significant improvement over the PS4 for 4K TV owners. The PS5 Pro at this price can hardly even be called a clear progression from the regular PS5. Alan Wake 2 incredibly noisy and with a big loss of performance, loss of sharpness in other games. "Super powerful" RDNA 4 RT cores don't help either. To be honest, at this price I expected raster and ray tracing performance at RTX 3080 and a lick of Path Tracing at 30 frames per second in games like Cyberpunk 2077, because at 1440p/DLSS Balance and constant 30 frames is possible on this card. This console is a big disappointment for me, especially at this price.

Graczdari

Hello team. Alex, why aren't game developers experimenting with techniques like SVOGI? Actually, only CRYTEK develops this in its engine, and it seems to be an ideal bridge between the generally used techniques and Ray Tracing at a much lower cost to support this solution. Lumen seemed to be such a solution, but still costs much more performance with not at all extremely better results relative to SVOGI. SVOGI they even run on Nintendo Switch : )

VeryProfessionalDodo

Aren’t those irrelevant? Now Pro coverage is taking point, and when a new game releases, they’ll cover all the consoles, so no need for any PS5 Pro vs Series X videos. The console wars are over, dude

VeryProfessionalDodo

Obviously not Alex, but Northlight, Snowdrop, Decima and custom in house tech are my favourites to see!

Matt Ledger

Oh, hi DF! Gran Turismo VR still stands as one of the most impressive gaming experiences I’ve had in years. Do you think the Pro has the scope to improve that and other VR experiences despite Sony seemingly abandoning the platform?

Faisal

Sillent Hill 2 remake (1.005.000) is labelled as Pro Enhanced but it is not and runs worse than PS5. I am extremely disappointed with this digital purchase (no disc drives available in 1000 km radius). Since you have influence can we get some answers from Sony or Bloober Team?

Ches Trulson

Hi DF Team! Did you know that here in sunny Australia we did NOT get the box within a box PS5 Pro packaging? I for one am appalled, though the packaging we did get is quite nice. Also, would it pay to revisit the Matrix Awakens, more Professionally, as it were? It seems to run very nicely on PS5 Pro but maybe I'm imagining a framerate improvement?

Ches Trulson

Apparently PiSSR for PSVR2 is not yet available, but will be coming down the track! "PSSR isn’t coming to VR games at launch though; a patch made specifically available to PSVR 2 game developers is expected “in the future,” Sony’s lead PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny told CNET back in September" - road2vr.com
