This one goes public once the Eurogamer article is complete - but Supporters can watch and download the video now.

Assassin's Creed Shadows already delivers one of the biggest PS5 to Pro upgrades - but now the enhanced version is even more enhanced, thanks to RT improvements to the balanced mode and the addition of PSSR upscaling which looks to be worthy boost over the standard TAAU. Performance though? It's not quite what it was.

Chris Gardner

I couldn’t find another avenue to make this comment (it doesn’t look like Patreon lets subscribers message creators directly). I just want to say I’m shocked by your recent upload (https://youtu.be/V10wHzV5zp0?si=qSgkpGiwnlQ5V1ST), as are most of the commenters on that video. This isn’t “sponsored content” - it’s a flat out advertisement with no analysis. That’s not what I come to DF for. I’m not going to pull my subscription over one video. That would be ludicrous. But you need to realize this is a serious mistake that you shouldn’t do again. If it becomes a pattern I’ll definitely be unsubscribing. Edit: it looks like this is now being titled an “Ad” on YouTube. Which is better, but still somewhat troubling. To be frank, I’d rather just send you $1000 or whatever Nintendo paid instead of you resorting to running full on ad videos. I’m not kidding about this - just let me know where to send the check.

I am going to echo Mr. Gardner here, the Zelda ad is a big mistake and should never be done again, you guys are one of the few people I actually trust when it comes to game coverage but this creates a clear conflict of interest, DF should be about (game) tech analysis, this is the first and only mistake you have made since I started following you on Eurogamer during the PS3/360 days and I have always had massive respect for your complete honesty in showing what games actually run like, for exemple everybody giving From Software a pass on piss poor performance on ANY system, you guys were honest when others were not, do not become the others, you will lose me and presumably the majority if not all of your fans, do not let that happen, please

I'm gonna be a third here. Like these guys, I won't be pulling my subscription over this, but that really wasn't it. I got real excited there for a moment, thinking ya'll had done a video with Nintendo but it was just an ad. Calling it "sponsored" at first as if it was made in collaboration and wasn't literally a reupload of one of their ads was low, and is not why I subscribe to and support Digital Foundry.

Dragon Reborn

I agree with the other comments here. That 'Ad' is a huge mistake. I hope at least that it was a mistake you made yourselves, and not under pressure from IGN.

Simplex

I share the sentiment in all the previous comments.

Same here! Won't pull my Patreon sub but c'mon guys! If it was due to the acquisition, show them the reaction.

I'm just going to be echoing everyone else's sentiment here, so perhaps there's no particular quality to my comment/contribution other than adding to the volume. The long-term level of trust and respect you've built with your audience (including myself) is massive, so of course I would not even consider no longer supporting the Patreon due to the only major misstep of this calibre that I can recall in all the years I've followed and then actively supported DF. That having been said, I too shared the experience of many that I clicked on the video thinking it was a "sponsored" piece which would feature a DF contributor doing their usual excellent work, just with a more exclusive/early level of access to an upcoming game. You have done these in the past, very transparently, and I've never taken issue with these. Suffice it say to say I was similarly shocked and disappointed as other commenters when it turned out to be a straight reupload of a Nintendo-produced video with no relationship to DF other than the fact that it was posted on your channel. I think part of the shock just comes from the fact that it seems so widely out-of-line with your extensive existing legacy of editorial decision-making. If it was truly necessary to run this Nintendo ad on the channel for reasons of financial security, then I won't immediately jump on the bandwagon of "never again" because the service you guys provide to the gaming community at large is unique, valuable, and in many aspects irreplaceable (at least in the short to medium term). If something like this was needed and may be needed again in future to secure greater financial security for the team and for DF to continue doing what it is doing, I can live with it, but in that case the way this was titled and presented and the minimal disclosure around it was wholly inadequate and that definitely cannot be repeated - and imho changing "sponsored" in the title to "ad" is far from enough, though a baby step in the right direction. In addition to crystal clear disclosures in the title and video description, the video itself should contain "pre-roll" for lack of a better term preceding the ad/non-DF produced content, whether via a text title card or a short interstitial from Rich introducing the video, that makes clear that the content that follows is not a collaboration with DF and does not feature any DF involvement beyond sharing it on your channel for commercial reasons. It probably does not bear repeating that the preference would be to not have a repeat of these types of videos at all, but to the degree that this is not compatible with the team's long term financial stability and viability, I've tried to provide (at least from my perspective - I can't speak for anyone else) a few ways in which the approach could be approved to make it slightly less egregious. Appreciate you guys taking the feedback from your community into account when reflecting on lessons learned and informing how you might approach this issue in future if it ever becomes an issue again.

PS - as mentioned by others, at least now that you have seen the community's reaction not just on YouTube but among Patreon subscribers, it might be worthwhile putting up a "community feedback" post so people have a chance to voice their opinions in a more targeted way. It sucks a little bit that this discussion is dominating the comments of Alex and Oliver's AC Shadows PS5 Pro update video, which I actually enjoyed watching quite a bit, rather than being about the actually valuable work they produced here. And I don't mean a post (up to you ofc) where you are eliciting opinions on this current debacle specifically - I wonder whether it might be worthwhile just having this be a semi-regular post (once a month or every two months? once a quarter?) to give the community a more focused and targeted place to provide comments, feedback, and suggestions of a more general nature that do not relate to a specific piece of content you've posted. Just a thought :)
