Hello! Before we move onto the usual Call For Questions appeal, I'd like to address the publication of the trailer we ran on the main channel yesterday. The truth is, it's always been difficult for Digital Foundry to add a commercial element to our content and it's rare that we get the opportunity - none of our videos have had an external sponsored component or even a burned-in ad insert since the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake sponsored video five months ago.

Assessing non-editorial opportunities is something we clearly need to consider carefully and I didn't consider this one carefully enough. Clearly we had disclosure problems in how the trailer was presented and the 'paid ad' idea isn't a good fit for our channel - so, lessons learned for sure, we're taking onboard all feedback and we're unlikely to do it again. Just to be clear, the level of commercial revenue doesn't threaten DF's existence - but obviously a more diverse income is important for numerous business reasons, future investment amongst them.

Onto DF Direct Weekly then - we'll be discussing the PlayStation handheld rumours that are taking shape, sharing our thoughts on the Switch 2 docked VRR feature disappearing from Nintendo US PR, Alex will be going hands-on with the newly released Zorah neural rendering demo, and if there's anything to add from the Switch 2 Mario Kart treehouse stuff, we'll be sure to include that too. And we might have some new info on Switch 2 Cyberpunk 2077 too.

So, it'll be Rich (ie me), Oliver and Alex on the panel, and the deadline for questions and potential topic suggestions is 8am BST Friday. Thanks for your continued support - it's been a challenging week!

Things happen and one small moment should never negate the years of amazing work you guys have done. Sadly with how cancel culture is working online these days people pick apart one thing and turn it into everything. Stay strong guys and keep doing your thing. Maybe no harm in covering the Zelda video specifically somehow Rich in this episode as you know people will keep referring back to this moment anytime you talk Nintendo in the future.

VitaminJ

I was just more amused that Nintendo didn't invite you to the Switch 2 launch day press event, but then did recognise your audience when wanting to give you money to effectively repost their ad! I hope you asked for more access in return!!

Will Cooling

Richard, could you tell the youngsters online about these little things called adverts from video game companies that used to run in the magazines you worked on in the 90s & 00s? Keep up the great work gents

Chase

just want to add, no big deal, people get worked up about nothing, love you guys. I think everybody would have loved a real sponsored video on the subject with DF commentary or exclusive trailer. just seeing a new DF video popup and it being an already seen trailer was a letdown

Austin Waller

Hey DF crew! I’ve been curious about a potential capability of the Switch 2 since seeing direct. During the MK World/Gamechat segment at ~9:50 you can see one of the people playing handheld but still chatting with the camera which is presumably still plugged into the dock. This seems to hint at some sort of wireless connection between the dock and main device. Could this potentially allow a Wii U like simultaneous handheld and TV like second screen experience? Thoughts? Thanks all!

Andreas Wright

Hi DF Crew, sorry for another Switch 2 question but here goes: do you think Nintendo is intentionally holding back games using DLSS for a reason? Could it be that they want to make sure developers get some more time getting it to work seamlessly with the hardware? Surely would improve image quality and fps in demanding games?

Allan Lindqvist

You really have to address the Zelda video in the direct. I get that fans are trying to being protective of you. I'm a fan too. But as a fan I really need to emphasize how the Zelda video is putting the channel in a direction that I, and I think many others, don't support. Even after the tagging changes the title is completely misleading, it's not a comparison video at all. If you are going to repost trailers like that it has to be absolutely crystal clear from the title and thumbnail that it's what you're doing. I really hope this was just a one off lapse in judgement. I dont mind d ads, do more ads in fact. But please, not for the subject matters of the channel -edit- I see now that you did address in the call for questions, apologies for not reading the post fully. It's great to hear but most people won't see that so you really need to address it in the direct as well

Steven Thomas

A while ago, Alex had mentioned a video looking at the best way to run your system with VRR depending on many things (for example, if I'm generally getting 200 FPS with a 165Hz panel, should I turn off VRR, and limit the number of frames to 165, or 160, or turn on Vsync, etc). Did this video come out and I just missed it? If it's not out yet, how does the DF crew recommend running things?

Spodlude

Now the RX 9070XT is a few weeks into launch, how’s FSR 4 shaping up in terms of support from developers? As an owner I’m a bit disappointed that the FSR 3.1 games require whitelisting in the driver to enable FSR4…

Konic & Snuckles

The topic of graphical settings in the PC gaming space has come up quite a lot during these last few DF Directs (e.g. manifesting a one-click "console optimized settings" button, rebranding "low" and "medium" settings with more psychologically pleasing labels like "Diet Coke" and "Coke Zero", and even hiding future-proof settings by default, unless the player can produce a sworn affidavit claiming they are a time traveler in possession of an RTX 6090). Permit me, then, to hop on this trend with my own galaxy brain question: With PC ports scaling so much higher now than they ever have before, would it not be better if games of tomorrow could simply ask the player, "Oi! What FPS you want?", then analyze their hardware configuration, compare it against internal benchmarks, preemptively apply a graphical preset to hit the requested FPS target, and then attempt to hold onto that FPS target for dear life by dynamically lowering certain graphical settings whenever the player inevitably tries to increase texture quality to "Pepsi Max," shadow quality to "Monster Zero Ultra," et cetera?

Hi DF crew! There are now rumors that vrr on Switch 2 is only supported in handheld mode and that it won't be supported in dock mode, because the dock is HDMI 2.0. But Xbox One X also was HDMI 2.0 and yet it had Freesync support which you tested - in light of this, do you think there's still hope for vrr in docked mode?

goregutz

Hi DF crew! Last week you discussed why the switch 2 only has HDMI 2.0 specifications. I have another theory. And that is the g-sync module. NVIDIA seems to have given up on it, and they haven't updated it to the HDMI 2.1 standard from my recollection. Do you think this could also be a contributing factor to why the switch 2 doesn't have full HDMI 2.1 support?

goregutz

Hi DF masters. Young DF padawan here. I really need to hear Alex rant about the 8gb 5060 ti as a catharsis. Thanks.

andre surles

John and company - How about a video focusing on highly performant unique game engines? Source 2, Frostbite, Madness etc.

NoobClear Gandhi

Hi DF crew. This question has been on my mind since the initial unveiling of the RTX 5000 series GPUs, and how your subsequent testing showed that those multiple frames generated now come at a significant input latency cost, which also increases lower down the stack. We have now seen one example of a game (No Rest for the Wicked), where the devs have used two separate engines, one to handle game world logic and one to handle visual processing. Do you think that this kind of shift to separate engines is a sign of future gamedev pipelines, or this is a flash in the pan? What do you think are the potential downsides to using such split engine approaches?

Simplex

My 2 cents re Zeldagate: I can begrudingly accept full on ads on the channel, but they must be clearly marked as ads and not have misleading thumbnail that promise a standard DF video, like the zelda one had. Even the title is misleading, there's no comparison there. This introduction of ads was sadly done in the worst possible way, a string of blunders, and you may have burned your audience. Perhaps next time you could consult the form of the ad (title, thumbnail) with the most supportive patrons, to minimise the backlash.

Gusso

Nintendo is targeting a lot of the Digital Foundry audience with the Switch 2, I bet I'm not the only one salivating for deeper comparisons of Switch 2 Edition games and their Switch counterparts. The fact we're finally talking about 4K Zeldas right now is truly a bit of a dream come true. That thirst for content seems to have clashed with the lack of DF commentary on the sponsored video, and the internet exploded into rage as they often do. I was mildly disappointed when the video showed up, but mostly sad for you guys needing to deal with the backlash. Thank you Rich for the classy and prompt reaction. For me, the replacement of [Sponsored] with [Ad] fixes all expectations. I'm all for you finding more paths for revenue, so hopefully this is not too discouraging. Thanks for everything you do, and looking forward to the real Switch 2 comparisons!

Tim

Just commenting to say that i am unsubscribing due the Legend of Zelda ad you posted, I thought that by supporting you on Patreon it would mean that DF Direct wouldn't have to release content like that. I have loved all your work up until now, all the best to the team and your IGN overlords

what does dog need with a starship?

hi df dudes! i have a question about our favorite new console and performance! it seems some internet people got flustered recently with comparing switch 2 to a ps4/pro when visually some games look much better and run faster such as street fighter 6 or metroid prime 4 at 60fps 4k without upscaling! but i think you guys have a more nuanced and technical reason to make such statements right? regardless of wether or not some games might look and run better than ps4 and maybe hang in there with series s sometimes (or just out right impossible such as starwars outlaws), in the raw numbers, such as tflops, pure bandwidth, and raw rasterization horsepower its right around that ps4/pro neighborhood right? and that doesn't preclude switch 2 being able to do better than ps4 in many cases (like ff7 rebirth) because of its newer architecture and additional capabilities anyways, its just a specific technical thing -not throwing shade- and not something to be so worked up about right?

cardinalwhale

I'm kinda baffled with the decision to put this type of video on the channel, essentially a repost from Nintendo Direct with no additional commentary... The reaction is entirely predictable imo. Best wishes and all but I've cancelled my supporter membership

wildwildwesty

Ahoy hoy good Sirs. With multiple PC handhelds on the market, the Switch 2, and MS and Sony mobile devices soon to become available, are we about to see an over-saturation of the market leading to the failure of some of these products? While you might not think of some, eg Steam Deck and Switch, as direct competitors, they are all competing for people’s money and time and I fear this could be a step towards a feared market crash. Thoughts?

Dave Brown

Hi fellas! I enjoyed Alex's deep dive on the DLSS 4 transformer model and was wondering: do the upgrades, especially the ability to select arbitrary scaling factors, impact the use case for DLDSR in any way? Does anyone on the team use DLDSR + DLSS?

EvilRacer329

Morning chaps! Something I'd love to get a discussion on is your thoughts on the way Nintendo are implementing backwards compatibility. I was hoping for an easy performance boost on all games, popssibly even an OS-level force to run all games at 1440p or above. But now we learn that it's all going to be done via emulation, which makes me worry that the extra processing power may be burned up simply handling the translation layer. We'll have to wait for you to get hands-on with hardware and switch 1 software to know for sure, but given your connections and experience I'd still value your input. I really want to replay Xenoblade Chronicles 2 at a decent resolution and/or framerate...

Dave Brown

Also chiming into say: I did not care in the slightest about the Zelda video. I'm a patreon subscriber but I also understand that you guys need to earn a living. The Zelda video, as a full-on paid ad, was actually preferable to the typical alternative where ads are embedded into otherwise normal video content.

Taggen86

Do you think that RT only titles like SW outlaws, avatar and indiana jones will use the switch 2 RT cores? Or do you think star wars for example will be raster only or some kind of software RT?

Perfect_Organism

The world is a depressing place atm. What’s something in gaming you’re looking forward to that provides a bit of a beacon of light throughout it all?

Perfect_Organism

And less of a q but more feedback that absolutely wasn’t asked for: I’m honestly glad DF runs sponsored content/ads occasionally. The world we live it damn near requires it - I get it, totally. I’d prefer the lesser evil of occasional ads vs not having DF in the world. Would be nice if us Patreon supporters could opt out from it, but that doesn’t exist on YouTube so whatevs Trevs. I think the thing that mildly irked me was that the branding and thumbnail lead me to believe it was a DF comparison video. That branding is so special and holds a lot of weight - it signifies that I’m about to watch a thoughtful video where I’ll probably learn something. It’s because of this that I get excited when I see those notifications come through, be it YouTube or Patreon. Don’t let brands exploit that to their advantage. Keep that power for yourselves :)

Max Stoler

Long time supporter, first time chimmer inner. There's a persistent rumor of a Z2 Extreme AI chip. Now fundamentally the AI on these APUs are generally external to the GPU as NPUs. For a gaming handheld, which the Z2 Extreme will be dedicated to, what purpose would that AI functionality possibly serve?

Real Frame Collector

Thank you for the response to the video Rich. I think posting the video in and of itself is fine but had it been prefaced with a short clip stating what the video is and where it came from, that should have addressed most people's concerns (not knowing the commercial T&Cs you had to work around). The DF Team has built up a great reputation for transparency, impartiality and independence over the years, the manner in how that video went up threatens that perception.

Container7

I think the Zelda video was such a cool, prestigious opportunity!I’m glad you posted it.

Taggen86

Did the new massive nvidia driver update fix your issues with your 50 series cards? In my case it fixed my issues with nv control panel v sync not working correctly with frame gen capping my frame rate way below my refresh rate.

Critically Wild

I had my say in the discord (disappointed, it was bad framing [thumbnail was worst aspect IMO], not fundamentally a bad concept to put a trailer up and get paid for it, though). What I think would be beneficial is thinking about discussing the state of monetising editorial and Rich I think a trip down memory lane — you must have some corker editorial/sales battle stories?

Snorlax cat

This is a question to the PSSR correspondent, after the hotfix of AC shadows, the issue of the banding seems largely fixed. The only problem I see with the presentation is the trails of particles. So this seems to be the definitive version of PSSR up to know. Do you consider that till the “FSR 4” like update this is enough to prove its place?

Taggen86

Could you provide a technical explanations behind the lack of VRR In tv mode on switch 2?

Wilbert

Yeah Bigmanupstairs basically covered it but just wanted to add my supporting voice. I was also suprised about the "ad" since didn't line up with my expectation of usual DF content. But I'm more surprised with these unsubscribe-reactions from channel supporters to one event (call it error, mistake, mishap if needs labeling). Thank you Rich for addressing the issue in the notes and the notion of lesson learned. I'm a fan of DF content and looking forward to the next Direct Weekly. Cheers!

Harliquin Ripy

Hey, long time YouTube subscriber/lurker (like, GTA5 days), shorter time Patreon Subscriber, first time poster on any of your content. The Zelda thing is really bad. If you become a channel that reposts unedited ads for products without even having meaningful commentary, then I think most people would agree that your channel is meaningless. You need to disclose the reason for doing this, and what it means for you as a channel. Times are challenging economically, if taking ads like that is what keeps your channel afloat, then I understand why you are doing it, but I also see no reason to continue supporting you with my increasingly tight wallet, if you don’t address this I will be cancelling my Patreon and YouTube Subscriptions, and well as blocking your channel. Thank you for the excellent content you have provided until now.”

Chris Gardner

In this week’s Direct you need to address the Zelda video up front. Put in the title that you will address it. You can say something similar to how you started this Patreon post. That (hopefully) will be sufficient with the masses. Anyway, my question: the Switch 2 backwards compatibility situation seems murky. Nintendo has changed the language on the their site to say that “issues are planning to be addressed” with games that previously were listed as “no issues were found during compatibility testing”. Nearly all of the games on their list now seem to fall under a “we’re testing it” qualifier. Given Switch 2’s launch only months away, do you feel this will be resolved in time? Or should people hang onto their Switch 1’s for playing older games?

ShadowheartEnjoyer

The thumbnail making it seem like it was a normal df video is what pissed people off imo, if it had been clearly just an ad it'd have been weird but who cares

Kimba096

Hi DF! In the recent Nintendo Direct for Mario Kart World, the 4-player split-screen mode appeared to run at just 30fps, which was a bit disappointing. Is the mode so demanding that 60fps isn’t feasible, even with low resolutions and settings? Is it more of a CPU or GPU bottleneck? Thanks for your great work, cheers!

Joshi

Do you gentlemen think that Nintendo might release versions of first party games that would work for both the old & new switch consoles? Years ago I got a copy of Gran Turismo 7 that included the PS4 and PS5 editions because I only had a PS4 at the time. Eventually I got a PS5 and got to enjoy the gt7 on my new console. Would Nintendo possibly do something similar with a special edition of the new Metroid Prime where a single sku contains versions of the game for both consoles? Thank you for all your work and take care.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight Lads! This week I've been trawling through some of Nintendo's "Ask the Developer" transcripts to see if there were any further tidbits in the wording of their responses. I noticed that they state specifically that switch 2 does not use "emulation" for switch 1 games (because it would use too much battery / resources), they also state that it cannot run natively..and that the games are therefore translated "in real-time". This would suggest that there is a realtime translation layer with the possibility of some spare resources. Whats the best and worst case likely scenario here - personally I'd like a "portable / docked" toggle when running switch 1 games so that we can choose the best visuals or the best battery life. Shall we launch a campaign for Nintendo to ignore? What else might this mean?

Someguyperson

Did you guys see the dumbest rumor ever regarding the Switch 3? John Vinh for KeyBanc said in an interview that the Switch 3 SoC will be made on Intel's upcoming 18A process, which has to be one of the dumbest statements ever made regarding gaming predictions. 18A will start production this year, which means that whenever the Switch 3 comes out, Nintendo would use a 7-8 year old process node to make this chip? Nintendo will almost assuredly stick with Nvidia as a partner (unless Switch 2 seriously bombs out), and yet Nvidia has absolutely no products being made at Intel's fabs. There's absolutely no chance that Nintendo has started development of Switch 3 considering SWITCH 2 ISN'T EVEN OUT YET. Overall, this rumor makes "GPU in the power brick" look like Aristotle's most precent insight. This rumor is so stupid in that somehow it's incredibly optimistic that Nintendo would already be working on Switch 3, yet at the same time, pessimistic that the silicon node isn't that much better than what we'll get in the Switch 2 this year, so what's the point? Please, if you are a reputable news organization, never publish anything this idiot says ever again. Only publish his "insights" if you're dunking on them because that's what he deserves.

Someguyperson

The 5060 Ti has about half the memory bandwidth & compute that the 5080 has and as a result, the 5060 Ti has about half the performance. But, the 5080 has half of everything the 5090 has and something like 70%+ of the performance. What's causing this? CPU limitations? Game engine limitations? Is this the end of rasterization scaling, or something else?

Someguyperson

Looking at how the Switch 2 performs, is it more appropriate to say it's a portable PS4, or a portable Series S? As you guys mentioned, the "Dogtown" section of Cyberpunk was too much for the PS4, yet it was running on Switch 2 at the event you went to last week (running poorly, but still running). The Series S has a clear RAM limitation while the Switch 2 has 12 GB. The Switch 2 also has hardware support for all the advanced features Nvidia has over AMD. Over the generation, do you see a bunch of games being ported from Series S to the Switch 2? Could some games run better on Switch 2 given they'll run at lower resolutions and have more memory to play with?

Someguyperson

Personally, I felt the ad spot was relatively fine, since it's a rare thing for the channel. I'm not sure if Nintendo would have sponsored a video with Rich & Oliver chatting about the differences you see in the footage, but I felt that would have been a better video that fits the channel better. The Zelda ad is absolutely not the thing I'm most upset about this week...

Corey Myers

I would be fine with the ad if there was some commentary about it. Nothing fancy.

gartenriese

Have you had a look at the new Nvidia driver? It comes with a lot of performance gains, supposedly.

FrametimeSommelier

Oh, look, another Switch 2 rumor. Because what’s more fun than speculating about a console we don’t have yet, right? This time, it is about that VRR is going to switch (no pun intended) off in docked mode. Yup, just when owners of VRR-capable TVs thought they’d finally get to join the cool-kid club, Nintendo appears to say, “Nah, fun is optional.” So, are we canceling our dreams of buttery-smooth framerates on TV or holding out for another day, another rumor?

FrametimeSommelier

With all the drama surrounding Nintendo's $80 Mario Kart pricing and fears of $100 GTA VI lurking on the horizon, are we overreacting? Sure, sticker shock is real, but when you break it down, video games might be the cheapest form of entertainment out there. Case in point: I recently sank 147 hours into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (premium edition for $79.95), costing me a mere $0.53 per hour—and that’s not even factoring in DLCs or a hardcore mode replay! Compare that to the price-per-hour of movies, theme parks, family dinners, or even a good old-fashioned video rental, and gaming starts to look like a bargain. Are gamers justified in their frustration over rising prices, or should we embrace the value proposition games already provide. I know, it is a tough one, but what’s your take?

DenuvoFan68

Hi DF! Sorry to drag you back in to the Switch 2 mines… A lot has been said about Switch 2s launch price, which is about $60 higher then Switch 1 even when adjusting for inflation. However, I’m getting the sense that you guys are way more impressed about the hardware this time then you were back in 2017. Do you think Nintendo is more ambitious about hardware this time around, and was that right path to go? Or do you think they should’ve aimed a bit lower to hit that 400 dollar mark?

Rickkity-T

Waddup dudes. I recently procured an OLED monitor and was surprised that the VRR flicker was so noticeable. It’s my understanding that all OLED displays with VRR will suffer from this, which made me wonder if this contributed to Nintendo’s decision to stick with an LCD screen for the Switch 2. I was curious what you think would benefit Switch 2 the most: VRR or OLED? Or do you think both should be viable, even with Nintendo’s high standards? Hope you have an awesome week, or at least just an alright week.

Cameron

Hi DF Crew! I was a little confused after your response last week about to my question about whether future implementations of UDNA would be included or benefit future handhelds (like the Sony, Xbox and Valve handhelds), similar to how Switch 2 utilizes Nvidia onboard hardware. I think it makes sense that they would be resource limited in other ways, but I was hoping you might explain a little how having dedicated RT/AI/Tensor/etc cores works alongside the standard CPU/GPU/Memory, and what the pros and cons are to having it in a resource constrained use case like a handheld. Thank you so much! I love the technical approach to your channel!

Cameron

Yeah, agree, think this was more surprising. Was expecting you guys to start talking 😅

Stop the Spread

I’ve got to say the “controversy” is overblown. Get $. Just stay objective. Who the hell cares? The blowup by your fans is giving “ethics in gaming journalism” vibes. So stupid. A clearly labeled ad. Don’t watch it. I didn’t.

Full House's John SteamOS

Ignore the trolls. They're almost entirely non-Patreon peasants. They'll be back because your content is based on exclusive analysis they won't find elsewhere. They'll forget when they have to go back to school after the Easter holiday. Get paid. Earn your name, Rich.

Alan

Hi Foundrians, Is there any justification in Sony raising the price of the PS5 digital, surely the PS5 disc costs more to build? With the current climate as it is, everyone is raising prices to cover costs however DF hasn't and there hasn't been any drop off in quality content, maybe ask the viewers to comment below on DF merch ideas?

FrametimeSommelier

I have no issue with ads and stuff. But the ad was not labeled as such at first. It just looked like another DF video with same font and style in the thumbnail. I watched it for like 2 minutes before realizing I'm watching an ad. The ad labeling was added later on. I think that is what weirded people out a bit. Like Rich said, lesson learned. No real harm done in my book.

FrametimeSommelier

If you experience VRR flicker (in my case some games are worse than others), it is most likely due to in consistent frame timing. You can stop most of the flickering by setting a frame rate cap to the point where you get really smooth frame rate. For example, I had VRR flicker in dark AC Shadows scenes as well as especially in the cut scenes (stupid 30fps cap). Uncapped gameplay was between 130 to 150 fps. I set frame cap to 120 fps in Nvidia control panel and now 95% of the VRR flicker is gone. Still have it in the low framerate cut scenes.

Alan

Hi Guys, Sony blew $400 million on Concord, they spent $3.6 billion on Bungie for their multiplayer, online and games as a service tech (didn't help with Concord) and as nice as Marathon looks visually this is going to be a paid for game and also have battle/season passes, surely it will be dead on arrival? Players are going to have to convince friends to buy the game so they can squad with them just to try the game out, this has to be free to play to succeed surely?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight Lads! (again) The leaked specs for Sony's PS6-adjacent handheld suggest a sort of "handheld 1080p PS5", which seems almost ironic when you consider that sony didnt have a "low spec" SKU like microsoft did with the Series S - so won't Microsoft be in a position where their Series S versions of games are "oven ready" not only for Sony's handheld, but also the Switch 2.. AND their own proper handheld (not the rebranded ROG). Also - could this be a winning strategy going forwards.. for last gen libraries to become "next gen handheld" libraries.. extending the lifespan of aging consoles and keeping lower performance targets relevant? There's an additional possibility consider of course - what if PS6 games can scale down enough to run on Sony's portable - then surely they could also run on PS5.. what a conundrum..?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half -Fortnight (again 2) Am I the only one that thinks the Indiana Jones PS5 Pro patch is an incredible waste of horsepower - they seem to have wasted all of the spare resources on resolution with barely any effort put into adding RT features as titles like AC shadows have demonstrated beautifully.. ?

Julian Shniter

Morning lads. Do you think Nintendo is making a mistake by not running the system docked at 4k120? Obviously games won’t run that high but they are missing out on fully utilizing docked LFC.

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

Could Proton on ARM64 be Valve's next big thing, potentially with a VR headset in mind? What do you think of ARM also powering a next-gen Steam Deck? Crossover and Game Porting Toolkit on Mac suggests translation layers are doable without sacrificing back compatibility, but for VR at least the library is pretty sparse, so does it really matter?

tod weitzel

Why on earth are they remaking oblivion in unreal, an engine that is well known for being a huge pain to mod?

Sam Ecorners

Good time of day, fine people of DF(including those not on the panel) I have a bespoke question for John. John, DF Retro content on 5th generation of consoles is some of the best content there is and the recent Wreckless video scratches the same itch for 6th generation, thank you! My question is, are there any plans for further 6th generation content? I find that period in gaming fascinating and your take on it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all your amazing work lads. Cheers!

AfreemTheDream

Greetings Foundrymen, I'm always looking for reasons to make my PlayStation Portal viable. Do you think it'll be able to connect to the upcoming PlayStation handheld somehow? Maybe as a second player or second screen via USB or WiFi? I need this.

L p

Can you address the 'flopflation' re Ampere and how that means you can't rely on the leaked clocks and TF figures (1.7 portable, 3TF docked) to accurately assess the Switch 2's performance relative to PS4 or Steam Deck. And as Gary Colomb has posted, it's more like 1.4 TF and 2.5 TF if converted to equivalent RDNA2 flops. https://x.com/carygolomb/status/1911161466465431899?s=46, https://x.com/carygolomb/status/1911077471606161664?s=46, This explains why you're only seeing base PS4 levels of performance for launch titles like Cyberpunk and Elden Ring (especially if you take into account whatever GPU/CPU resource is constantly allocated to GameChat - which has to work across all games AFAICS as it's a system level feature like Party Chat on Xbox etc).

alpha54

^ This, basically. It was not initially labelled as an ad but as sponsored content, which DF has run in the past and I've never had a problem with. I'm glad the guys are reflecting on whether running normal content-length ads on the channel is appropriate to begin with, but even if it were to happen again, there were significant deficiencies in disclosure here that can be addressed effectively, avoiding both the valid criticism and the overblown parts of the internet's reaction.

alpha54

In addition to what GimmeMoreFramerate mentioned above, I don't know which OLED monitor you have an whether it has this function, but LG OLED TVs have an option called "fine tune dark areas", often abbreviated as FTDA, that also does a fairly good job eliminating VRR flicker in cases where unstable frametimes are unavoidable for whatever reason. It basically makes dark areas just a little bit darker so that the flicker becomes imperceptible without being so aggressive that you get major black crush. The optimal FTDA setting will depend on the content and on the TV (e.g. iirc on LG OLED TVs the flicker is least present/noticeable the closer you are to 60 or 120 hz/fps, requiring a smaller FTDA adjustment, and most significantly present/visible in the range in between those values (requiring a larger FTDA adjustment). As an example/starting point, on my LG C9 a FTDA setting of -3 or -4 seems to produce the best results when I'm gaming on my Xbox, where I don't have the same ability to control frametimes/cap fps, etc. that I do on PC.

alpha54

I left a v similar comment on the Early Access AC Shadows PS5 Pro update video, which seemed to become the de facto discussion space re the ad issue on the DF Patreon. Given their history of sponsored content/collabs with devs that feature the DF crew still doing their usual thing with their usual editorial approach, I think I was primed to expect that (and take no issue with it). The initial label of "sponsored" content was fairly misleading in that respect, and even the change to "ad" that followed imho is insufficient - whether via text title card or a little intro from Rich at the start of the video, its providence (i.e. the fact that it's a Nintento-produced marketing asset with zero involvement from DF) needed to be made much clearer right at the start of the video. DF delivers an invaluable service to the community and if anything I'm supportive of them trying to diversify their income sources to the greatest degree possible to ensure their long-term financial stability. If third part ad content like this can make a meaningful contribution to that I am not against it on principle - as long as the disclosure/commentary around it is significantly improved as you mentioned.

^ Couldn't agree with this more. I don't want to clutter this comment thread any further, but have left much more detailed thoughts in a comment on another post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/slightly-early-126715195 Much like you, while I had issues with the ad, they are solvable through much clearer, proactive disclosure. I'm similarly shocked at the level/amount of "cancelling my sub" type comments given the years long history of editorial excellence and responsibility at DF, with this being the first major "unforced error" in that respect that I can recall. I would think (and hope) that the majority of supporters give the team a little bit more credit than one mistake undoing the trust they have deservedly built up, especially given the speed and clarity with which Rich has already responded to everyone's concerns in this post...

I've got to work on my ability to shorten my written thoughts haha - you've expressed basically exactly what I did in a comment on another post, but with like a quarter of the number of words I needed xD

I really like your idea and have got a kind of follow-up question I guess regarding the dynamic lowering of certain graphical settings specifically. I've always been surprised that this is not a more commonly taken approach - if we can dramatically drop resolution using DRS during intense combat moments where the player is unlikely to notice, surely the same would apply to shadow quality or any number of other graphical aspects. Is there a technical reason that devs only really seem to play with resolution to maintain a target FPS (i.e. is it impossible to adjust other graphical settings "on the fly"?) or is it simply due to convention and nobody having bothered to try it yet?

While I don't agree that people are worked up over nothing (tbf I'm limiting that view to actual supporters, I'm sure the public YouTube comment section's reaction is extremely disproportionate to the issue at hand), I do agree with your overall sentiment wholeheartedly. I have no issue with real sponsored videos, as DF has done in the past, many of which are fantastic content because we get the dual benefit of the editorial opinion of the DF person covering the game plus a much higher level of access to the devs that allows you to interrogate why they made certain choices, etc. So it really does boil down mostly to disclosure/how ad content is presented, because the way past content on the channel has conditioned me is definitely not to expect a third part ad with zero DF involvement when it's labelled "sponsored."

Something I’ve been curious about: could trilinear or anisotropic texture filtering negatively affect image quality when used with DLSS, FSR, or TAA by making surfaces look slightly soft? Since texture filtering effectively supersamples the texture over a pixel’s area, I’m wondering if that might interfere with how temporal techniques reconstruct detail using point samples from current and past frames. Could this interaction result in slightly softer surface detail? On the flip side, does using anti-aliasing with DLSS/FSR produce softer edges?

Hi gents smiling emoji. The thing I’m most looking forward to with switch two is playing my games with a better framerate. Which in my mind is making this feel more like a switch pro. Had there ever’ve been a switch pro what hardware would you have expected to see in it? And how much would that differ from what we’re getting with the switch 2

I might have missed the deadline, but a short update on nvidias latest drivers would be great. Seems as they have fixed most/many of the problems and that nvidia driver quality is back where it should be, right?

Hi DF crew! Apparently some new footage of Star Wars Outlaws running on Switch 2 has surfaced, and honestly—it looks pretty rough. The visual downgrades are quite noticeable, and even then, the framerate seems pretty bad. Is it possible that the excellent RTGI has been disabled? What’s your take on it? I know it’s limited footage, but it’d be great to hear your thoughts or maybe see a comparison with other platforms. Cheers, and thanks for all the great work you do!

New supporter here! Just saying hello to everyone and trying to catch up on everything! It's pretty fast paced and I'm loving it! 🫡

Hi and welcome, have you joined the Discord server?

I had no issue with the sponsored ad, it was clear as day what it was especially if you watch most other YouTube channels. lol I don’t think people understand that the DF staff does not work for free, and the money needs to come from somewhere. I also see a lot of complaints that DF didn’t cover a particular game. With more money Rich can finally clone an army of Oliver’s to make him unlimited fresh cups of tea and have them cover all the games the crew misses!

Thanks! I just joined the server. Thanks for letting me know about it.
