Hello there - just a quick post about DF Direct Weekly #217 which we're (kinda) prepping for now. This one's going to be quite different. As Oliver is intent on getting his Mario Kart World edit completed first, the plan is to tape this one first thing tomorrow morning, with Oliver working on the edit once he's done with MKW. Any early access period, therefore, will be smaller than usual. We don't do this often, but this has been a crazy week.

Still, it'll be John, Alex and Rich (ie me) on the mics and we'll be talking about the Sony State of Play, Geoffcon aka Summer Games Fest, PS5's VRR issues being fixed, Black Myth: Wukong coming to Xbox exactly a year after PlayStation and much more. Meanwhile, Rich will be sending a Terminator back through time to eliminate whoever came up with the word "Fest".

But this is where you come in: we're looking for your topic suggestions and questions for the show. And as usual, there's an invitingly empty box below for your inputs. Many thanks and enjoy whatever it is that Geoff has lined up for us later.

Witcher 4 on base a PS5! This is some serious tech wizardry—pulling off detailed vegetation and multiple ray tracing effects at 60 FPS is impressive stuff—unless it’s all just a bit of smoke and mirrors. How close will the final game be to this “tech demo”? Are we in for another 8-year Cyberpunk-style wait, or will the Unreal Engine Partnership fast-track us to a 2027 release? Bonus Question: Did this "tech demo" with 300 NPCs on screen spark any hope for a 60FPS mode for GTA 6?

After all the years of waiting and the advance of PC-based handhelds… is the Switch 2’s performance underwhelming?

Gordon Lin

I bet this season is somewhat impossible for this..... But how often does the DF team roll credits for the games they play? In the meantime, good luck with the Switch 2 coverage!

Speaking of underpowered gaming machine launch, we celebrate this week the 40th anniversary of the Atari ST! First of all, a short anecdote: I chose that nickname a few years ago when joining DF's Discord as I thought it was a nice and sweet nod to my first computer ever, which gave me so many fund childhood gaming memories. But thanks to you and Discord members since 4 years, I've been presented to the fact that games on Atari ST sucked hard on performance. The avalanche of proofs that were thrown to me spreaded away the fog of my memories and now I remember clearly how I was fighting against those games instead of enjoying them while other kids who played on other machines experienced real joy. Thanks folks. Who needs sweet childhood memories anyway. Jokes aside, I still cherish that machine. And I'm glad it's still alive for some people, sound creators for exemple who still think Atari ST rules in that field. Did you know for exemple that Fatboy Slim composed all his albums using an Atari ST? Secondly, well, what are your memories of this machine? Did you got one? Used one? Payed therapy for a friend who owned one? I would be happy to hear your anecdotes on that machine if you have some.

Which console had the biggest leap in terms of graphical fidelity of software released initially, to the graphical fidelity of software released towards the later part of its lifecycle? Not sure it’s the best example but I’m sorta thinking along the lines of the PS2 starting out with Eternal Ring, and ending up with RE4.

Spodlude

Is John disappointed by Fast Fusion's image quality on the switch 2 - I know I am!

GlacierIsland

What has been the most surprising thing about Switch 2 as you’ve explored it?

Kris Graney

Hi DF Crew. As I see it, most S1 game carts have the actual game data on them rather than just a license key like the S2 Key card. What games do you think will be a case of it’s better to own the S1 game cart rather than the S2 version of the same game? I think there will be some surprising S2 select games but they will be because they are the game carts that have both the S1 and S2 variants on the same card with DLC bundled in such as the Zelda games. The Arkham Knight and Witcher 3 games look to have a good performance boost, are there any real surprises to you when it comes to backwards compatibility? Keep up the great work, and welcome back John.

Kurt Bixby

Hey all. I have a question regarding Switch 2 game cards. While I have yet to see anyone dissect a Switch 2 game card yet to look at its memory chip or controller, I’ve been wondering if it’s possible Nintendo is only offering a 64GB option because that’s the smallest size they can actually make. If the game cards turn out essentially to be reshelled microSD express cards, could Nintendo be limited by the production of those specific memory chips? I haven’t seen a card smaller than 128GB and have thought maybe the 64GB cards are binned versions of bigger chips. I acknowledge this is a lot of conjecture, but I tried to think of a possible reason Nintendo might be limited on storage options. Thanks for the great work you all continue to do!

I see a lot of people celebrating the just announced Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection. Sorry to be a little negative, but I wanna stress out that Digital Eclipse has a history of awfully high input lag on its compilations. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary? Unplayable for professional players, even on PC. TMNT The Cowabunga Collection? More than 100ms of input lag added on each game if I remember correctly. The Atari collection was good but emulating those way older machines seems far easier than arcade ones from the 90's. I'm glad the Mortal Kombat klassik games are back but I'm cautious about my excitement.

Lohonnd

Important context w.r.t. Black Myth Wukong. They seem to really like Aug 20th. Game was first announced on Aug 20th, 2020, was announced to be on UE5 on August 20th, 2021, another trailer on Aug 20th 2022, and first hands-on preview on Aug 20, 2023. Game Science also made another comment on their FAQ regarding the delayed release on Xbox: https://www.heishenhua.com/news/detail?id=194

Hobobench

Hey guys! If the Witcher 4 is able to run at 60 fps with rt on base PS5, will that bode well for a potential Switch 2 conversion? Were there any parts of the demo that look particularly out of reach for the handheld?

Question Generated By JensenGPT

Have you done any wattage tests on Switch 2 to see how much it pulls from the wall when docked? It doesn't seem to get all that hot or make much noise even in docked mode.

Archibald “Moonlight” Graham

Happy DF Direct gents! It’s certainly exciting to think of SteamOS competing with Windows, especially as a full-time Linux user, but I think we’re quite a long way’s off to seeing any type of desktop option as the Linux NVidia driver lags behind its Windows counterpart, especially in DX12 titles. Do you foresee Valve working with NVidia to shore this up? What would be in it for NVidia?

ConcreteLlama

Have any of you ever had a close call with a staple?

Archibald “Moonlight” Graham

Happy DF Direct gents! Thomas Crider (a.k.a. Glorious Eggroll) has released a version of Proton that allows users to use FSR4 on RDNA3. Any interest in exploring this?

sj33 (Jake)

Hi all, Nintendo’s choice of a 1080p LCD is a well worn topic, but the softness of the image in Fast Fusion really highlights the issue going forwards. 720p still might not help Fast Fusion, but it feels like we’re going to have to get used to increasingly soft looking games over the life of the console. My heart sank a bit seeing the backlight glow behind the Nintendo logo when first booting up - not a great first impression. Meanwhile John has demonstrated the poor motion clarity on social media. Is it really worth it just for the 1080p 120Hz that few games will be able to utilise? It feels like Nintendo were grasping for points of differentiation that I’m not sure are worth the trade offs.

minty-hippo

Is the Switch 2 the last big generational leap we'll see in the console space? I can't help but feel that it matches what Gen 8 was to Gen 7 in terms of performance and fidelity improvements: finally a 1080p60 console that gets full HD right. Gen 8 gave way to forever games like Fortnite, Minecraft and Overwatch. 12 years on, those consoles are still actively supported and that baseline performance target seems to be alright with devs and consumers alike. Might this also mean a longer cross-gen period or an even longer wait for Switch the Third? Thanks for all you guys do!

Red Phoenix

Hey team. Thank you for all your due diligence and hard work bringing us all so much superb content. Long may it continue. I was particularly curious how you all personally feel about console launches with the tug of war between being avid gamers and the need to produce new content about the new systems. Particularly John and Oliver being avid Nintendo fans. Does it feel like work or is it still a pleasure? Perhaps Alex could take on some Nintendo analyses? I am sure he would love to!

ConcreteLlama

How on earth are you going to handle this week? The not-E3 period is always jam packed and you always have so much to cover, but this time you also have a new console release to contend with. Has there ever been a busier time at DF?

Peter

Good day gents and happy Switch 2 launch week! (And happy "8gb GPUs still being released" week for Alex 🙂). Apologies in advance for reopening a topic that became somewhat insufferable around the launch of the PS5 Pro......but with the latest AMD card 9060 XT it now feels feasible to build a PS5 Pro level PC for ~£1000 which I'd say, given the extra things you can do on PC, makes it a genuinely viable proposition. Do you agree, and if so, what would you recommend to pair with this GPU for the more budget conscious? Have a great week all!

Real Frame Collector

Good Afternoon Digital Foundineers! As Nintendo have opted not to have the Switch 2 hardware reviewed prior to release with seemingly no impact to sales, is it possible that Microsoft/Sony could ape this approach for the next console generation and what would it mean for yourselves and other games media outlets?

HarryB

What’s the deal with Switch 2 motion blur and HDR? Could you guys please explain why having a 60hz game refreshing at 120hz increases motion blur? And is it better to just turn off HDR in handheld?

Songmin Lee

Hello DF! I was playing Spider-man Miles Morales on PS5 Pro (Performance Pro mode with VRR on), and from time to time the game seemed pretty choppy. But to my surprise, when I checked the framerate on my monitor's OSD it showed that the game was running at around 60-70fps. This made me curious so I did a simple test on my PC and games looked smoother when the monitor was set to 60hz compared to when the monitor was set to 144hz (with VRR on obviously) and the game was capped (I used RTSS) at 60fps, even though they were both running at the same framerate. Is there an actual difference between two modes when it comes to how the monitor displays frames or am I just hallucinating?

Daniel Tobin

How would a Switch Pro have differed from the Switch 2?

DenuvoFan68

Hey Lads! With rumors that MS is backing away from the subsidized console battle and focusing more on publishing multiplat games and selling unsubsidized PC hardware, could you see someone else stepping in and taking the fight to Sony? Perhaps a sweet subsidized console could be Epic’s ticket to platform owner status? They already have a history of giving away free software so why not discounted hardware as well!

Pol Kallamata

What are your thoughts on the UI of the Switch 2 being so similar to the original console? After I set mine up on launch day I couldn't help feeling that between the overly familiar home screen, packaging, and design aesthetic of the console itself, the Switch 2 felt more like a pro version of the old console rather than a brand new generation. When I contrast this to the experience of getting a PS5 in 2020, which had a completely overhauled UI, very different design language from the PS4, a different controller shape with substantive new features, and a pack in game to showcase all the differences, upgrading to a Switch 2 by contrast kind of felt like upgrading parts on my PC. Are you guys also a little bummed out by the lack of effort in trying to create a distinct new flavor for this generation of Nintendo hardware? Or do you prefer this iterative approach to what was there before?

TheAdam

Hello DF Team. I'd also like to say a huge thank you for your excellent content. While transferring my data from Switch to Switch 2, the following thought occurred to me. With 150 million Switch units sold, wouldn't it be a nice gimmick to use the Switch as a controller for the Switch 2, like a better Wii U? That would give the Switch a second life, and we could revive old game ideas. What do you think? Hang in there, and I hope you can also enjoy the current flood of exciting topics.

Someguyperson

Producing 4K videos has its benefits, but what are the potential issues? Would things like clearly seeing your wife's long hair on the right side of your face, distracting viewers of your 9060 XT video be a potential problem? Also, how did you not feel that hair on your face? I feel it would tickle the face in a substantial manner.

Someguyperson

In your 9060 XT review, you listed the 5070's price as $550, but over here in the states, it's in the $600-$700 range (+$50). The 5070 Ti is $850 (+$100), the 5080 is $1400 (+$400) and the 5090 price is just stupid. Could you use the street price instead of MSRP when the MSRP numbers are just imaginary?

Someguyperson

What do you think of Nintendo casually "dropping" performance improvements to Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom the day the console comes out? Does this sate backlash that the upgrades should have been free to begin with?

Rachel

Hey guys! A question I'd really love your opinion and expertise on given your much more extensive game libraries is: Now that you’ve had a chance to try Switch 1 games on Switch 2 (excluding the obviously niche stuff that’ll never run), is there any compelling reason to keep our Switch 1s around? I caught sight of mine today and felt a pang of nostalgia. But writing this out, I’m reminded that gameshare alone might justify keeping it. Gameshare feels like a really neat feature, and extending support for it to our older consoles feels unusually generous of Nintendo.

Someguyperson

I'll actually answer some Switch 2 questions I had earlier: 1. The Switch 2's polarizer is oriented correctly so you can play it with polarized sunglasses on. 2. The back of the Switch 2 is plastic and the skin temperature can get a little warm under load while charging the Switch 2. 3. The docked fan's airflow seems to go into the openings on the bottom edge of the Switch 2, which then passes over the large metal can that is sinking some heat from the SoC and providing RF isolation. I would estimate that this only provides 5w of additional cooling; possibly a maximum of 10w of additional cooling, which isn't that great. I think Nintendo could have done more here.

Someguyperson

What do you think of the Switch 2's battery and how it has the same adhesive as the Switch 1 on it? I had to replace my Switch 1 battery and it's a huge pain because of that adhesive.

GeekyDud

Good day gents! Long time viewer, first time supporter (yes it's dud not dude)! First of all, thank y'all for all your hard work during this extremely busy season, it is not taken for granted! Now then, a little pipe dream of mine. Do you think the Switch 2 would have the CPU overheard to blaze through Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in 4 player split screen at 60fps with an update? I doubt Nintendo would ever do it as they want to sell copies of World, but a man can dream! As someone who regularly plays 4 player co-op with my family, the drop to 30fps in Mario Kart games is always a bit of a bummer. Cheers and godspeed!

Someguyperson

I think it looks completely legit. The image quality/resolution didn't seem that great to me and definitely looked like a PS5 quality experience. I would think that if there's a PS5 version of the game, it's going to come out before 2028 FWIW.

Someguyperson

Nintendo will inevitably produce smaller Switch 2 carts to mitigate this issue, but it's definitely a tricky one for the launch window.

Someguyperson

It's very likely that nobody made cards smaller for that because there's absolutely no demand for it. With Nintendo selling millions of consoles in the first month or two, now there's enough potential demand for the factories to produce smaller cards with less risk. I hope/expect to see smaller cards by next year, if not sooner.

wildwildwesty

Forget GTA6, will the tech we saw this week for The Witcher 4 run on Switch 2? The Witcher 3 was the "impossible port" for OG Switch. Will we see this again for the new generation?

Someguyperson

I think it's all about CPU performance and Epic is claiming that CPU performance is the one area they focused on the most, so I would say it's absolutely possible and the performance would probably be similar to the Witcher 3 on Switch 1.

Kris Graney

Q for John. Does the Switch 2 finally fix the slow down in Double Dragon?

Someguyperson

I haven't done extensive testing, but it seems that the battery will charge at a maximum of 18 watts by itself. Given the wattage of the dock, the console itself might be pulling 20-25w from the SoC in docked mode.

Someguyperson

You could easily surpass PS5 Pro performance with a 5700 x3D, but that's a dead platform at this point. A 7800x3D or 9800x3D should be the CPU to get, but really if you just want PS5 Pro equivalent performance and upgradeability, you could go with 7600X.

Someguyperson

Nintendo tried to make the Wii U as similar to the Wii as possible and only pivoted when the product bombed. The Nintendo of today is extremely conservative with the core console and goes wild with the peripherals like Labo & the AR Mario Cart game. The days of N64 & GameCube are long gone.

supergoogleli

Got two Switch 2's at launch but not too optimistic. Its chip is already four years old at launch - do you guys think emulator will come out relatively quick? I play a lot of Switch games on my PC (now with 5090) at absurdly high internal resolutions (I bought each one of the games that I emulate), now even Mario Kart World which is supposed to be the latest and greatest looks like an eyesore especially on my 83" OLED. What gives?

Pol Kallamata

I went straight from the Wii to the Switch. So I didn't expeperience the Wii U being similar to the prior console. My only experience with the UI being the same as before I guess would be back in the cartridge days, when there wasn't one to begin with lol. At least the Wii U did try to differentiate itself with the tablet though.

PixlPeeper

Hi DF ! Not really a question, but hear this: while everyone was focused on traversal stutter in Unreal Engine 5, I went ahead and found it in... Doom The Dark Ages ! That's right, I didn't believe it either ! PC version, first level. You close 4 demonic portals, which opens a door to a room with some soldiers and some wounded. Step in. Go to the end of the room. Nothing happens, right ? Just your usual excellent frametimes. But now go back from where you came in. There it is ! Just before the door, clear as day on my i5 12500, repeatable to your heart's content. Seriously, this game's performance, and not just that, is so good, that finding this little elusive stutter actually put a big smile on my face

FrametimeSommelier

Well, well, well...IO Interactive's 007 game has finally emerged from the shadows, shaken, not stirred. Naturally, I must direct my first inquiry to the only British gentleman on the panel: Rich, how do you feel about Amazon’s fresh-faced take on Britain’s most beloved spy? A millennial Bond, seemingly fresh off a Cambridge graduation, green behind his ears, flashing that charming juvenile smirk. Call me old-fashioned, but I have a creeping suspicion the franchise might be slipping away from me as a longtime fan (maybe, needs to be seen). But let’s talk visuals, what did you think of the trailer’s presentation? Anything striking or unexpected that caught your eye?

BespokeEP

Yup, also after marketing dozens and dozens of timed exclusives and labelling the length of the exclusive on the trailer, why would they pay to keep the game off Xbox and never market it as exclusive once? Why would they be ashamed of this one? lol and on top of that Sony was court ordered to give MS a heads up on every future exclusivity deal prior to announcing it, so that MS has time to react…. And yet Sony hasn’t been sued for breaking that order lol.

FrametimeSommelier

In the ever-lasting discussion what makes gameplay footage and game-like cinematic with cut-scenes footage, we have two fascinating case studies. Rockstar insists that the latest GTA 6 trailer includes plenty of gameplay, yet it looks suspiciously cinematic. Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red swears the Unreal Engine Witcher 4 tech demo had no gameplay whatsoever, despite showing what can only be described as, well… gameplay. So where do we draw the line? How do these marketing approaches shape expectations? And, most importantly, which studio has mastered the art of saying it is when it isn't, and it isn't when it clearly is?

Kitty Raven

@John viz your Switch 2 Launch Stream, aside from the Sega Saturn-esc dithered transparencies what is your problem with A Hat in Time? My 12 year old daughter was mortified by your dissing!

BespokeEP

The one thing that everyone seems to forget is that GTA5 was a PS3 game and last gen’s CPU’s were probably the worst ever. If they don’t have a 60fps option on every console with the exception of Series miStake we have problems. Also Witcher 4 running on PS5 at 1080p60 isn’t as impressive when you compare it to something like HFW running at 1800p60 on a substantially older version of the respective game engines. HFW is still the best looking console game this gen

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

Having played around with my Switch 2 for a couple of days I think I can conclude that it is just as much fun as a Switch 1. That's no bad thing, but I am left wondering what happened to the Nintendo that brought us the more radical VirtualBoy, 3DS, Wii and Wii U. Not every gamble paid off, but should they have tried harder to find a killer feature?

Snorlax cat

do you envision gta 5 on the switch 2 hardware?

Yinj

Hello Gentleman. How are you all getting through this crazy week? New console, great looking UE5 Tech Demo, a good Sony Presentation and Geoff in hasn't even happened yet. What keeps you going?

Alan

Hype!

Alan

Hi Chaps, What should Nintendo do to improve the Switch 2 v2? In my opinion, it needs a better battery (also user-replaceable) and better Wi-Fi, as it doesn't seem great currently. What character do you use for Mario Kart and why? They MUST add Miis in my opinion! What about giving the spare DF Switch 2 to Alex? Has he ever had a Nintendo?

The Shadow-Map

Somewhat broad question but targeted directly at John -- what are some characteristics of bad CRT TVs?

Spodlude

Interestingly comparing the switch 2 editions of BOTW and TOTK, BOTW looks crisper as it's not utilising the crappy FSR implementation I think..

Brian

Hi all, first time long time. I've always appreciated the way you all highlight the current dilemma of developers trying to push tech forward while profitably producing a game in a timely manner. Considering this balance, where does Ghost of Yotei fit in for you all? I recall the DF Crew was a little underwhelmed by the trailer that released a while back - did the most recent State of Play change impressions? Is Sucker Punch holding their punches on tech to make development more streamlined?

MittenFacedLass

Displaying a 60hz game at 120hz means you're showing every frame twice. That's why there's extra "blur."

HarryB

I don’t get why showing every frame twice for half the time would be more blurry than displaying it once for twice as long.

10 Watts Raytracing

Hi DF, congratulations on the Switch 2 batman/Witcher video on the system's launch day !

MittenFacedLass

Feel like the 120hz was more for 40fps and VRR than actual titles running at 120.

10 Watts Raytracing

Topic/Question: what's using up all that sweet VRAM in modern games? 8GB would sound like a huge amount of data to a novice, and we've had crisp looking surface details at 4K without all that VRAM for years now. What are the technical reasons driving up the VRAM requirements of games over time?

Coll

I get 13w handheld, 13w docked in the home menu and around 13-20w docked in-game, depending on the game. I haven't really tried any especially taxing games though, so I don't know if it goes up from there.

Richard Tucker

Hey tech bros (or tech brahs/bruhs), We have two examples of some very high-quality, console-targeting, big-budget games in The Witcher 4 (in Unreal Engine tech demo form) and GTA 6. How do they compare for you? What's good about each? I'm not exactly asking which one you think is better—I just don't know how else to frame it. It's just interesting that we have a great example of a high-quality Unreal Engine title and a high-quality proprietary engine (RAGE) demonstrated on PS5 hardware. One is 30 fps (GTA), and one is targeting 60 fps (The Witcher), so both are very impressive—but with one targeting 30 fps and the other targeting 60 fps, it makes for an uneven comparison in a sense. Add to that both employ raytracing (although its a bit unknown for Witcher 4, but GTA 6 RT seems very impressive on console) Would be interested in your thoughts, Thanks, and remember, 'don't be a Richard!'

Sloth

Based on your testing so far, what graphical effects and engine features do you think pose the biggest challenge for backwards compatibility for Switch 1 games on the Switch 2?

tod weitzel

How's the physical media story for switch 1 games on switch 2? Do they all need patches or are they still plug and play?

BespokeEP

Also August 20th is the 17th day of the 7th Chinese lunar month, which is when that culture believes is the Monkey King’s birthday. The reason PlayStation has never commented on these allegations is because they never comment on silly Xbox fan boy claims…. And see the thing about being a publicly traded company is they cannot make “secret” deals cause that would be withholding information from its investors who need to know this kind of information. I pray that when MS shuts down Xbox that all its fan boys turn into pixie dust

Coll

Pokémon Scarlet/Violet's miracle patch on Switch 2. How did they do it? It has that oddly uncanny feel of frame generation, but I can't see that being achievable with the chip.

Samuel Gao

Hey Gentlemen of DF! This one’s mainly for Alex: Do you think we’re starting to hit a ceiling with x86 in gaming? It feels like "brute-force" rendering layered on top of a general-purpose architecture is delivering diminishing returns — especially with modern RT/PT workloads and the growing reliance on frame generation. If you had full creative control over a next-gen console, what architectural changes would excite you most?

crylessengine

Switch 1 games look so great on S2. I'm wondering if in S2 handheld mode I'm seeing S1 docked version of the game or is it upscaling wizardry?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight Lads! It occured to me this week that we have a fairly unique opportunity arising very shortly. Not only is Alex visiting the good people at CDPR; but it is hot on the heels of their release of Cyberpunk on Switch 2! I know Alex's "prime directive" is likely to talk about UE5 updates, nanite foliage and Witcher 4 etc. however, could he run a sub-routine deep-dive into the patented black magic of "NintenDLSS" - because who in the world - would be in a better position to discuss the Kyoto flavoured custom lightweight variant of DLSS than Alex and CDPR,.. plus Alex loves 2 switch things up right?

Leftisthominid

What resolution do you think the Geoffs will be in? Which upscaler do you think will be upscaling Geoff? DLSS? XeSS? FSR? Which version?

Leftisthominid

Have you had any chance to see how the Xenoblade games play on Switch 2? We all know that Monolith Soft are filled with wizards who could push the Switch to the brink and beyond, but I really wonder how their games will look without the limitations of the Tegra X1. (I am still waiting for my Switch that was supposed to come on launch day...)

Leftisthominid

Will you be taste testing Switch 1 carts vs Switch 2 carts?

Spodlude

Perhaps not in docked, but certainly in handheld - id say hogwarts legacy might be the most impressive launch title visually!

yogi

Would AMD and Intel benefit from joining forces in the GPU space against nvidia? Not that this would ever happen even if they would stand to benefit in some way

Taggen86

Early switch 2 thoughts?

digitalfoundry

The problem is that street prices change all of the time. Weirdly, we are pretty much at MSRP in the UK.

digitalfoundry

Max I've seen is 22W - and that's while charging. In gameplay, charging trickles.

Mr Bespoke

Hi DF Crew! Will John be willing to take a look at Arcade Archives Ridge Racer on the modern consoles and see how it stacks against the original System 32 and PSX port? Thanks and keep up the Amazing work!!

MittenFacedLass

Not specifically for DF direct, but would love to see more HDR coverage, especially since all consoles support it now. Additionally, as someone without a Switch 2 and who likely won't have one for a bit, would also love some bonus b-roll HDR capture of Nintendo titles to check out. Curious to see how those games look in HDR!

William Z

Hi. Some Retro questions for John…. 1. Would you consider the Sega CD to be the equivalent of a modern mid-generation upgrade like the PS5 Pro It expanded capabilities (CD-based storage, better audio, scaling video playback) but didn’t fundamentally change the Genesis’ base power. So does it count as a mid-gen upgrade or more of a bolt-on platform shift? 2. If Sega had gone with a 3dfx GPU, a more ergonomic controller, and included a DVD drive in the Dreamcast — do you think it would have fared better commercially? Could the additional visual horsepower and media format compatibility have extended its life or helped it stand against the PS2 juggernaut? 3. How does the Dreamcast stack up against the PSP in raw power? The PSP came out 5 years later, but Dreamcast still seems capable of running many of the same types of games (arcade-style racers, fighters). Games like OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast would’ve been awesome to see on Dreamcast — could it have handled it?
