Hi there, how are you? Doing well here, thanks for asking... despite the fact that Thursday is upon us once more, meaning that three Digital Foundry staff, usually including Rich (ie me) will be sitting down tomorrow to talk about the latest gaming and technology news. No prep work as of yet, but we will be sharing our thoughts on the Microsoft/Xbox lay-offs and trying to figure out what the strategy is that emerges in the wake of one of the most savage rounds of redundancies we've seen yet.

This follows in the wake of controversy surrounding Microsoft's hardware strategy, which we may or may not discuss tomorrow. Xbox is committed to a tenth generation console, so some of the discourse has been surprising.

Other topics on the docket? We'll be talking about the AMD hearts Sony announcement this week concerning what Mark Cerny has described as RDNA 5 and the Amethyst initiative. We may also talk about Donkey Kong Bananza's developer reveal - it's the Mario Odyssey team, apparently. And we'll be "pouring one out" as they say for the GTX 700, 900 and 10-series cards that are finally losing driver supports. RTX 5070 Super/5080 Super leaked specs? Also possible.

Anything else you feel we should be covering? Reactions to any of this week's topics? And what about supporter Q+A? Ask your questions below! Chances are it'll be Rich (ie me), John and Oliver in their literal hot seats and the deadline for your probing queries is 8am BST Friday morning.

Hello folks, just this week I became a proud Analogue Pocket owner. What are some personal GameBoy, GameBoy Color or GameBoy Advanced recommendations from the DF team? Cheers!

goregutz

Hi DF crew! Recent AMD drivers have made it so that the 9070 XT is now faster than the 5070 to if YouTube is to be believed. Have you tested this and does it change your review conclusions?

Hunter

Yo dudes In the past you've been proponents of 40fps modes in games like Ratchet and Clank, even if they were a bit more niche as they only benefit those with 120hz displays. I'm surprised I haven't heard much talk of it now that every Switch 2 owner has a 120hz display. It seems to me like 40fps could be the Goldilocks zone for games like Fast Fusion between performance and image quality. I forgot to phrase this like a question. What do you think?

Leftisthominid

What are your thoughts about what is going on at Xbox? I understand that they are basically quiting bespoke hardware in the near future, but in the here and now they are cutting software development. This is very befuddling. And the job losses continue to be distressfull... into the here and now.

Leftisthominid

I am learning Japanese. In John's video, it looks like his consoles now default to Japanese, not English or German. I am unfortunately deficient in Kanji, so I was wondering if he could recommend games that include Furigana?

Leftisthominid

What would Nintendo overdriving the Switch 2 screen entail?

Taylor Wiseman

Hello, DF Crew. Does Digital Foundry have any recommendations for Portable Gaming Monitors? I know you guys are big on home gaming monitors, but I’d like to have a monitor that I can take anywhere so that I can have my Switch 2 in docked play on a portable screen. This may also help get around the unfortunate motion blur in tabletop mode, at least until a Switch 2 OLED if that ever happens. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Hi all, The awful Microsoft news this week has me thinking. I'm sure this makes me extremely naive, but the recent trend of acquisitions means that so much of the industry we love so much is controlled by few enough people that we can count them on our fingers. Microsoft are custodonians of studios with history and legacy that frankly towers above anyone sitting in a Microsoft boardroom full of suits, who sit there deciding how many thousands of lives need to be upturned because they decided that big number isn't going up fast enough. Be it Microsoft, Embracer, or anybody else deciding to buy up companies - they are the custodonians of legacies far more important than any of them, and it feels utterly broken that so few people control so much. 9000 families upturned because a small number of people decided that millions upon millions of dollars isn’t enough. I have no answers or solutions, but the whole structure of our industry is broken right now, we need a system that is properly capable to protecting those that make the gaming industry the best in the world, it should not be concentrated in the hands of a few people who do not care beyond making their own bonuses bigger.

Was Nintendo right all along not trying to swell like an ox, with the risk of exploding? Even though Sony is "winning" the console race for now, they also shut down studios and cancel games regularly. I would worry working for them. Meanwhile, Nintendo avoids layoffs—even after failures like the Wii U—and finds huge success with modest tech. In today’s climate, could that be the smarter, more sustainable model?

Leftisthominid

I am approaching the GPU market. I have an RTX 3080 10GB and an i7 11700KF. I am looking to leave the CPU alone, but in the current GPU market, I am rather confused. I play with AI, so I really need something with at least 16GB of VRAM while at the same time don't really want to crack $700 USD on a GPU. Any advice?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half Fortnight Lads, I hope you are all doing ok. At the tail end of last week it emerged that Nintendo have recently published 3 patents relating to what sound like lightweight ray tracing innovations. Namely: A ray tracing method that allows per-object reflection control (P7698754) A ray tracing method that ensures correct reflection near screen edges (P7698755) A more performant shadow mapping technique (P7698753) So it looks like Nintendo innovated in their development of a very lightweight "Ninten-DLSS", for switch 2, and that they have more efficiency innovations brewing to get the maximum bang for buck from the RT hardware in the T239. How impactful do you think these methods could be in 1st party games, and how likely is it that they are available to 3rd parties, given that "NintenDLSS" uncharacteristically was.. ? https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/06/three-nintendo-ray-tracing-and-rendering-related-patents-published-in-japan https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:w2yyporceaqxdbzfupn5lcbt/post/3lsisrfobvk2d?ref_src=embed&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.nintendolife.com%252Fnews%252F2025%252F06%252Fthree-nintendo-ray-tracing-and-rendering-related-patents-published-in-japan

I guess we can at least be grateful Microsoft didn’t cancel Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4? ....Right!? Or is it too early to make that call? ....Did I just jinx it?

DaJaCo (Dan)

They're the only company apologising for having sold more consoles than expected. And given that Microsoft's "Two Tins" strategy seems to be diluting what's left of their brand, with ex-employees saying "xbox hardware is dead".. YES - although Sony is somewhere in the middle of these approaches.

DaJaCo (Dan)

They seem hawkish enough right now to be Hawkless at any given moment.

Dom Datwun

'ello there chaps, long time viewer first time writing-inner (exclamation mark!) The release of the Fast Fusion "pure" mode seems to have revealed the wisdom of their original use(/abuse) of DLSS - but I wondered if there may be another potential path forwards for other developers: DLAA with lower output resolutions and higher internal resolutions. Given than the cost of DLSS scales with output resolution, it seems at least plausible to me that the cost of 1080p DLAA might be broadly equivalent with say 720p scaled to 1440 or 4k - and might result in a softer, cleaner image that's ultimately more pleasing to the eyes. Thoughts? Also John mentioned ages ago that he was working on a retrospective of the N64's first year of titles - is that still in the works?

BespokeEP

Hello the league of extraordinary DF gentlemen!!! no question, just wanted to submit my entry for best Greeting of the year! Maybe along with Graphics of the year, you can do a best supporter question Greeting of the year? Carry on lads!!!

TheAdam

Hello, DF Crew. So this is what the end of the console wars feels and looks like. Layoffs at Sony and now again at Microsoft, studio closures, and the cancellation of ongoing productions. On top of that, exorbitant prices for consoles and console games. Nintendo has already withdrawn from the traditional console market since the Wii U at the latest. Employees and customers are definitely not the winners. What now? Only use PCs? Boycott AAA games to finally break this vicious cycle?

Leftisthominid

Have you heard the hypothesis that the new DK Bananza game is a prequel to Super Mario Odyssey? Will this idea affect your reviews of the game?

Aaron Udy

Hello Deefers! 5080 Super rumours swirl once more. I'm currently rocking a 3090 and the main reason I didn't grab a 5080 was the VRAM discrepancy. If the Super "drops" with the rumoured bump, I should jump right, RIGHT?

TheAdam

Hello DF Crew. More closures and another reminder that studio purchases always end in drama. As an old gamer, the current news made me think of the old studios of yesteryear: Westwood, Bullfrog, Irrational Games,/Looking Glass, the old Blizzard, the old Bioware, and so on. Which independent studio today still exudes similar vibes for you? CD Projekt Red, Larian? I'm curious to hear your opinion.

Snorlax cat

do you think that the switch's 2 dock's authentication chip could also be a hurdle for vrr output?

Adam Holmberg

Hi lads. So, about those Xbox news, 'ey? Isn't it hard being excited about Microsoft and their current Xbox strategy at all? Had every Xbox released since the OG one but find it harder to care as all the news from them are either confusing or bad. I get axing projects not working out, but doing it after all these years doesn't really make me feel interested as a fan to keep investing my time and money. Is there any hope for them at this point?

William Z

Hi. Some Retro questions for John…. 1. Would you consider the Sega CD to be the equivalent of a modern mid-generation upgrade like the PS5 Pro It expanded capabilities (CD-based storage, better audio, scaling video playback) but didn’t fundamentally change the Genesis’ base power. So does it count as a mid-gen upgrade or more of a bolt-on platform shift? 2. If Sega had gone with a 3dfx GPU, a more ergonomic controller, and included a DVD drive in the Dreamcast — do you think it would have fared better commercially? Could the additional visual horsepower and media format compatibility have extended its life or helped it stand against the PS2 juggernaut? 3. How does the Dreamcast stack up against the PSP in raw power? The PSP came out 5 years later, but Dreamcast still seems capable of running many of the same types of games (arcade-style racers, fighters). Games like OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast would’ve been awesome to see on Dreamcast — could it have handled it?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half Fortnight Lads (2) Now that it has emerged that Sony is creating a "low energy mode", "third flag" as part of the SDK, which many suspect is essentially a stealth "future portable" spec. Could it be said that Sony is to some extent adopting Nintendo's approach to the switch.. only instead of having 1 Hybrid Box with "Docked" and "Portable" performance profiles.. they have 2 boxes. Also, doesn't this open the door to a "PS6 Lite" which is essentially just the a defeatured portable sat under your TV .. and allows them to hit more mass market price points at launch?

DaJaCo (Dan)

It's a bit like oversteer in a car, if you oversteer while overdriving then it's game over. However if you understeer while underdriving, you'll probably be just fine.

Aaron

Hi DF crew! Switch 1 saw tons of games make liberal use of DRS. On Switch 2, are you generally seeing image quality improvements in those games when running on Switch 2, or is it really a case-by-case proposition?

DaJaCo (Dan)

I don't think their "Two Tins" strategy will fool anyone, you can't just paint everything black and green and call it an Xbox.

Marcus

Hiya foundrymen! RDNA 5 and project amethyst seem to basically be AMD playing catch up with NVIDIA and utilising there cooperations with Sony to accelerate that process. It seems to have been somewhat successful so far with FSR 4 being quite a compelling upscaler. Still one of the main reasons why people buy alike for like Nvidia card for maybe slightly more than an AMD card is in order to get access to the Nvidia tech suite. How valuable do you think that suite of technologies is? If you were in the shoes of someone looking to buy a xx60 or xx70 class product how much value would you ascribe to that tech? Thank you for all your hard work.

DaJaCo (Dan)

If Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond start exclusively wearing Black and Green clothes, will he become the "Xbox of Yore" and will she become "Xbox of the Future", and will this be the largest technical leap in a console generation EVER, for all time preceding the year of our Lord 2025?

AfreemTheDream

Greetings, Foundrymen! Channeling my inner Seinfeld here: so Microsoft was financially able to purchase ABK, but financially unable to hold ABK, and the holding is really the most important part of the purchase.

DaJaCo (Dan)

1 - You've answered your own question (no) 2- Maybe if it had the games 3- Probably, but it wasn't commercially viable.

L p

Do you think Microsoft tend to mismanage their first/second party studios more than Sony or Nintendo? Even Wikipedia thinks so! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Gaming#Mismanagement_of_gaming_studios_and_layoffs Nintendo have led relatively unknown studios to put out gems like Metroid Dread and Luigi's Mansion 3, while MS, even after 25 years, cannot reliably manage many of its studios or IPs. Why did management even allow a game like Perfect Dark to be in dev for 7 years? Or Everwild for 11 years (with assurances from Phil 5 months ago that it was on track)? Someone really should be asking this question: https://aftermath.site/xbox-layoffs-microsoft-phil-spencer

DaJaCo (Dan)

Maybe the dock fan is there purely to cool down the authentication chip! Maybe if you become a pirate, your switch melts accordingly.

L p

Big news this week from Cerny, that PS6 is not going to be based on next year's RDNA5/UDNA (as rumoured) but some later architecture (UDNA2?). Does that make you more optimistic on the capabilities of the PS6? Any guesses as to what process the PS6 will launch on? TSMC 3nm? What other hardware/capabilities would you like to see in there?

Levander Davis

To me, my Foundry-Men! Helldivers 2 on Xbox?!?! Is this the next phase of Sony’s multi platform strategy? Last year, we had the Horizon LEGO game on Switch and, now, this! Do you see Sony following Xbox’s playbook but just slower?

Eric Hurst

Good morning, gents, and happy July. The Rubicon has been crossed! Since Sony has announced that Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox, the seal has been broken on PlayStation as a publisher releasing games on Microsoft’s platform (of course besides MLB the show.) It’s clear to me that the industry is going down a path where some day all games will ship on all systems. With the allure of exclusive games becoming null, what will be the deciding factor for players choosing consoles in the future? Since it no longer matters what system your friends buy, nor if a game will be available on one system or not, what will manufactures be boasting about to keep players on their respective hardware platform? Where will the competitive edge be?

Pol Kallamata

With reporting that FSR 4 will be integrated into PS5 pro in 2026, will this spell the end of the PSSR tech / branding? Was PSSR simply a stop gap technology, or naming convention, used for AI upscaling tech on the PlayStation Pro because it was launched months before FSR 4 was ready to be unveiled and released? What would be the point of having both of these technologies if Sony and AMD co-develop tech and AMD powers Sony's current and future hardware?

TMoney58

John, when using multi frame gen 3x or 4x to amplify frames well north of 200 fps is motion blur still needed?

Erik Kelly

Hey DF team. On the heels of this week's layoff news, I have a pretty basic question for you: why is Microsoft involved in the games industry at all at this point? Recent history suggests this is a pretty fundamentally uncreative company taking a private-equity acquire-and-burn approach to so many great gaming studios. Why does Phil Spencer get to keep his job as Xbox flounders while hundreds or thousands of creative people have to lose theirs? Sorry to come in so hot with this one but I already felt pretty torched by the closure of Tango Gameworks and this week's events were even worse in scale. Do I need to be talked down? Thanks, exclamation point.

Daniel M

Also, do you think that they'll be able to make it so that PSSR games running via back compat use FSR 4?

ConcreteLlama

How is it that the Initiative spent so many years releasing 0 games but Obsidian has games coming out of their ears? Shame about Perfect Dark, that vertical slice we saw last year looked fantastic. Obviously the layoffs are the pertinent thing here but what happened at the Initiative just reeks of mismanagement.

Someguyperson

You essentially apply a negative image of the previous frame to try and move the liquid crystals faster than they would otherwise move to their next position. The main issue is that if you go to far, you see ghosting of a negative image on the screen causing "overshoot". You need to properly calibrate the magnitude of the overshoot before applying it in a lookup table or something like that.

Someguyperson

All the Pokemon games, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, the GBA Fire Emblem games, the Golden Sun games (they look particularly good with the Pocket's screen effects), the MegaMan Battle Network games, the GBA Castlevania games, Metroid Fusion, Advance Wars 1+2. There are so many great games there.

Someguyperson

With studios like CDPR pushing to get higher framerates out of UE5, in addition to Epic focusing on enhancing performance, do you think we could see "remasters" that are really just early UE5 games ported to a later version of UE5 that could increase framerates and decrease stutters dramatically? Do you think something like that could pave the way for more Switch 2 ports of modern games?

Someguyperson

I'm very glad Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS6 isn't coming out for a few years now. TSMC's roadmap indicates that if you're building a new chip, the A16 fabrication technology is the place to be and if you come out with something earlier than that, it will quickly become outmatched. Sony is essentially confirming that their PS6 chip will be made with a process that's A16 class or later from that timeline. That process also introduces massive performance/watt improvements, which makes a handheld more viable. Do you see Sony's PS6 timeframe as anything but a good thing? TSMC Process Numbers: (all these numbers are power improvements at same performance or performance improvements at same power, you don't get both) A14 vs. A16: 8% power, 2-5% performance A14 vs. N2P: 25-30% power, 10-15% speed (new GAAFET design) A16 vs. N2P: 15-20% power, 8-10% speed (Backside power delivery) N2P vs. N3E: 36% power, 18% performance (GAAFET) N3E vs. N5: 32% power, 18% performance N5 vs. N7: 20% power, 15% performance Theoretical PS5 vs. PS6: N7 to A16: 2.5x power reduction, 75% performance N7 to A14: 2.75x power reduction, 81% performance

Eric Benoit

would it be fair to say that Xbox is the 21st century Panasonic 3DO? They're saying everything is an Xbox, which sounds good for generating revenue, but I'm not sure it's going to work out in the long term. if HALO was in better shape and studios making games like HI-FI Rush were supported instead of shuttered, i would be more positive. i think Xbox as a brand is being diluted at the cost of distinctiveness. Rant complete.

Patrick Young

Salutations! With nvidia’s 5000 series nearly fully launched, will you be taking a look at the bottom of the stack? The 5050 laptop class card should be fascinating, if for no other reason than its ability to give us a sneak preview of Nintendo Switch 3’s future architecture, eh? Any thoughts? Cheers.

Special Agent Cooper

Thanks! Golden Sun completely went over my head when I was a kid so I'm eager to try this supposed classic

Someguyperson

The 50 Super series might have more VRAM (like everyone expects), but the real question is what these things will cost? The same as the regular 50 series? How close to MSRP will these be? Will we see prices inflated 50%-100% over MSRP like we saw with the 50 Clark Kent Series (aka not Super)?

Phil

Hey Gang, I have a slightly insensitive question to ask in the wake of the Xbox news. Why is it so hard to make a game? With all the shared knowledge, common engines, asset, animation and code libraries, surely it should be getting substantially easier to prototype games into a buildable state. I understand that world and art design is a heavy part of getting an IP off the ground, but I still don't understand how a studio like The Initiative, with MS's backing, can fail to deliver *anything* in 7 years?! I'm really not trying to lean into a 'lazy dev' narrative. I'm just shocked how this can go on so long with nothing to show for it. Cheers, Phil

Perfect_Organism

This is not a dig at all, I’m just curious - at what point do the press have a moral responsibility to stop reporting on Xbox games/news?

Kirkland Spector

Hello DF! First time poster - fan since 2009’s esteemed “Uncharted 2 Tech Analysis” video! I have a question primarily for Dr. Battaglia. I’ve been playing KCD2 on max settings and am undecided on my preferred DLSS setting. When upscaling to 4k, quality mode averages around 60 fps while performance is closer to 90ish (I can't remember exactly). It has me questioning, which is more valuable, the visual detail of quality or the temporal clarity of performance from a higher framerate. I’m not opposed to playing at 60, so I’m less inclined to turn down settings. Assuming quality mode doesn’t max your monitor’s refresh rate, what is your preferred diss mode? Would you always pick performance in that case? Or maybe balance strikes *cough* the perfect balance. DF is a huge part of my life and I greatly appreciate the work you all do! With love from San Francisco :)

The Knight Who Says Ni!

Hey DF, isn’t it so inspiring to see Microsoft once again doing what it does best—laying off talented devs and shutting down beloved game studios? I mean, who needs creative teams making unique games when you can just restructure, consolidate, and “streamline operations” every few months, right? Why invest in innovation when you can invest in… well, nothing at all? It’s like Xbox execs spin a giant wheel every Monday labeled: “Synergy,” “Restructure,” “Refocus,” and “Oops, you’re all fired.” I can’t wait to see what groundbreaking IP gets cancelled next... Do you think they actually have a plan? Or is this just “visionary leadership” by spreadsheet?

Alan

Hi chaps So Xbox once again lays thousands more people off. One surely has to question what Xbox is doing, because apparently all the gaming corporations say there isn't enough profit being made from games, which is the reason they keep laying people off. Yet Xbox seems to have gone all-in on being just a publisher and developer. If they keep laying people off, there won't be anyone left to make the games.

BespokeEP

I think you meant to say, “ Sony is essentially confirming that their PS6 chip” not PS5. Curse these fat fingers and small keys :P haha cheers

Someguyperson

Thanks for the proofreading! It doesn't help that a 6 is a 5 that's just filled in a bit more.

tod weitzel

Is the Microsoft acquisition of ABK going to end up as catastrophic as letting Embracer get as large as it did?

BespokeEP

PS5Pro will still use PSSR… it’s the algorithm that is being updated. PSSR was designed to run on the RDNA2.x architecture. FSR4 is PSSR at the core, just with modifications to be optimized for RDNA4 architecture. But AMD also added a newer ML training model, which is what Sony is adding to PSSR along with all the FSR Redstone enhancements, which will have to be modified to work on RDNA 2.x and will likely be renamed to things like PSRR (PlayStation Spectral Ray Regeneration) …etc

BespokeEP

Not at all… PlayStation is following the same strategy they outlined 5 years ago. You will never see a single player tent pole AAA 1st party PlayStation game release on Xbox. They were very very clear about Live Service being a different animal and nothing has changed. Exclusives are dead only on one platform.. the same platform that is attempting to say the console market is in decline. If the console market was in decline, why did Switch 2 break a record and why does Sony’s MAU’s keep rising.. also in 5 years Sony has made more profit than the previous 4 generations combined…. Xbox consoles are in decline, but the rest of the industry has never been healthier, and with Sony’s “hero projects” starting to mature in markets where console gaming had not been allowed for years, the PS6 will be available to close to 2 billion more people who will now have games made about their culture and heritage made by people from there. PS is looking for a fresh group of players to keep HD2 making money. And with Xbox all but confirming that next gen will be their last, PlayStation is looking to convert Xbox players to PS6. I mean if Steam is accessible on an Xbox, how many people will still buy their games from the Xbox store? And when devs see the decline in traffic to the Xbox store, why would they bother making an Xbox version of their game? They will just make PS, Steam, Epic and sometimes a Nintendo versions …. Xbox is about to kill it’s entire revenue stream

BespokeEP

No lol… Sony’s strategy has not changed at all. They have clearly said for the last 5 years. Live Service games will be on multiple platforms because they live and die by player numbers. And they have never stated that a live service game won’t come to other consoles. Lego Horizon was pitched to Sony by the Lego Group, and was developed by a 3rd party. Guerrilla Games did not develop it, their only involvement was ensuring that TT games respected the IP and story… so no, PlayStation, who has never been more successful and profitable, are not following Xbox, who is failing miserably and hasn’t been profitable since the late 360 gen according to a report that came out this morning. The console market is booming for all but one… because exclusives sell hardware

BespokeEP

I don’t think Sony will do a “Switch like” console anytime soon. The tech just isn’t there. And to do something like that now would see Sony 1st party games taking a visual leap backwards. The PS6 will be very powerful. The “PS6 portable” though I love Tom’s (MLID) idea of using the same chip but with slower clocks, I doubt it would fit in a handheld size. Instead I believe this handheld will play 99% off PS4/PS5 games natively and will be a remote player/cloud streaming for PS6. I also think Sony will incorporate version 2 of its PlayStation link hardware into PS6 and PS6P along with wifi 7 or 8 (if out) which will offer a close to zero latency experience for remote play, headsets, and the DualSense2. I also think the DS2 will come standard with 2 back buttons so that Devs can make advances in gameplay. The edge 2 will have 4 back buttons. I also think that the chip used in the handheld (which will launch the year after PS6) will also power a stand alone PSVR3. PS6: late 2028 $699 PS6P: late 2029 $599 PSVR3: late 2029 $599 One sku all digital, but it will be compatible with the current PS5 disc drive and the PS6 will just come with a swappable cover. Though now that I think about it, it will likely be called the PS6H (handheld) so that if they do a PS6Professional it’s less confusing, though they did give the controllers the same abbreviation DS lol

BespokeEP

it’s exclamation POINT. -5 points!!! but seeing how it’s your first time… +5 points to Gryffindor

VeryProfessionalDodo

Press has the responsibility to cover news and newsworthy events, so I reckon it should continue reporting on Xbox games. If Clockwork Revolution is a slam dunk, shouldn’t its devs receive all the press it deserves, just because it’s an Xbox game?

VeryProfessionalDodo

The fact that games in the AAA space coalesce into amazing games is a miracle in itself. Large games have everything going against them, it’s an insanely complicated puzzle piece, where if just one part fails it might compromise the entire product. Games can still get made at a leaner scale, but they won’t be as ambitious as your Cyberpunks, GTAs and Horizon Forbidden Wests. Open world games are just almost standard now, and are a financial black hole.

Vanguard

Hello DF crew! A question for John: you recently mentioned your struggle to find a "real" 2.1 HDMI cable. Would you mind sharing which cable finally got your seal of approval? Thank you for your insights!

Michel

Do you have any idea what’s going on with Death Stranding 2’s jittery camera? It drove me crazy on the PC version but the PS5 version was perfect. Do you know what’s causing this? You think there’s any chance it will be fixed? It’s something that’s plagued me for a long time so I’d love some insight into what could be causing this. Thanks mates.

Dorby1988

I was wondering if you guys would be willing to do a video comparing the Switch 2 to the Steam Deck and possibly other PC Handhelds with similar graphics settings.

Kevin Booth

Hi DF Crew! Given the troubling situation continuing to develop within Microsoft, and the Xbox team specifically, does this represent an Icarus moment for the Xbox brand? The topic of Microsoft's mega acquisitions of ABK and ZeniMax has been discussed ad nauseum, as the Eye of Sauron (Satya) is hovering intently over Xbox to recoup the investment. While GamePass offers great value to gamers, I can't help but wonder if Xbox leadership has crossed the event horizon on this strategy. Is selling full priced software on competing platforms enough to sustain the existing business model or does this demand drastic (and potentially very unpopular) changes to GamePass? Thanks and keep up the great work!

John Meize

Hello! Do you guys think that MFG has an unfairly poor reputation? After re-entering the PC sphere after 15+ exclusive years on console, my impression of FG - when properly deployed - is very positive! In December I bought a well-priced 4070Ti Super pre-build but I wish I had access to 3X & 4X MFG. With current path traced games, if I can reach 45-60 fps with DLSS, then 2X FG increases to 80-100, which makes a LARGE difference in fluidity. I personally see value in tripling/quadrupling fps (irrespective of the popular 'Fake Frames' sentiment). Penny for your thoughts?

Samuel Gao

Hey DF Team — Sammy’s back! What if we rethought the entire rendering pipeline — not just throwing more TDP and silicon at the problem, but actually re-architecting it? x86 is broadly compatible, but inefficient for gaming. Imagine a console built around a monolithic SoC, where parallel-purpose chiplets (logic, PT, raster, ML, etc.) share unified memory (UMA) and operate in true parallelism — reducing CPU→GPU handoff stalls and avoiding traditional pipeline bottlenecks. Since this would be a single die, not a disaggregated multi-chiplet layout, the fabric wouldn’t need to solve high-latency off-die communication, only local scheduling and memory access — more like Apple’s M-series than AMD’s multi-die CPUs. This could enable a full path tracing (PT) compute path — not just RT, which is only a subset — letting developers allocate compute toward shadows or reflections, or scale up to real-time global illumination. Could this kind of hybrid architecture — tuned for gaming — be a more efficient direction than the current x86/APU model?

DudleyTheGentleman

Hi DF team, on the topic of Sony and AMD's partnership, I recall Mark Cerny specifically discussing having a focus on CNNs for the future of gaming specific ML tasks. With the major benefits that Nvidia has shown with switching to transformer models, do you think that Sony, and AMD, will be revaluating their previous stated focus on CNNs? What ML features do you hope become a standard in next generation console games?

Do you think it’s too early for NVIDIA to be dropping support for the 10 series? Given a 1060 is still #12 on the Steam hardware survey, is this just NVIDIA being greedy?

Tricky one but our job is to report, not to boycott.

Hi esteemed “blokes”. Donkey Kong Bananza’s terrain deformation is cool in theory, but some gameplay videos made the levels feel like canvases rather than worlds. Since Donkey Kong is from the critically acclaimed Mario Odyssey team, I think it’s fair to compare it to Astro Bot (an underdog) and Odyssey. Although these statements will get me digitally exiled, is my Gen Z brain cooked for thinking those two games just seem better? The terrain deformation in Kong’s game almost seems like a gimmick. Apologies for offending everyone and sounding brainless, cheers, chappies!

There has to be a point thought right? Thinking Tesla - most respectable news outlets are certainly more considerate with their coverage about Tesla/Musk et al than they once were. I’m not saying we’re there with MS yet, but damn, constant news like this certainly feels like it’s worth a conversation on how MS is reported on.

It seems feasible that the jump from RDNA 2 to UDNA / RDNA5, in addition to the leap from the launch PS5's TSMC N7 to TSMC N3 or TSMC N2 could be sufficient. Especially when you consider that it will likely rely heavily on a performant FSR4 derived version of PSSR. Look at how the Switch 2 with a significantly weaker GPU is punching well above its weight by rendering at 540p (or less) and upscaling to 1080p or 720p in portable mode. I could see Sony having the PS6 on N3 and the portable on N2 for improved battery life and performance, where they can just have a bigger cooler on the PS6 home console. I don't think the PS6 will even offer major improvements in raster performance versus the PS5.. I think they will lean HEAVILY on RT / Path tracing / Upscaling / Frame Gen., with a fairly nominal increase in raster capability. Maybe if 8K TVs had taken off by now, things would be more raster focused. I think the "PSP-3" will be 16~18 CUs of UDNA, and will be able to run PS6 games at much lower resolutions, and then upscale them with FSR4/ PSSR.. similar to switch 2, it'll take a PS6 game, and render it at circa 540p, with various other cutbacks due to reduced portable memory bandwidth, and upscale to the display res (of likely 1080p). Also given their approach to PSVR2 - I'd be quite surprised if PSVR3 ever happens. Not unless some other VR console platform starts to succeed in the market and tempt sony back.

It looks like that might be what HellBlade 2 "Enhanced Edition" is.

Heya! By the time we get to play the next 3D Zelda (2029?) ray tracing will be ubiquitous across other platforms. Even Series S was able to produce solid RTGI in Metro Exodus at 60fps. Could Switch 2 do something similar at 30fps, and might Nintendo opt to make Zelda their first foray into Ray Tracing?

Nixxes seem to have assisted once again to polish up a subpar PC port, like with the original Horizon Zero Dawn. They announced that on their Twitter/X page. This time it is TLOUP1's turn. From what I experience myself, there seems to have been a very big leap in performance. Would love an analysis on this if you have the time.

Really? You've experienced a big leap in performance? What GPU/CPU do you have? I'm considering installing it again to check the update out, but I'm not convinced any substantial jump in performance was going to come from this update.. but I'd be happy to be wrong.
