Another week, another weekly update from the team at Digital Foundry. The #content meeting kicked off as usual at 9:30am sharp this morning and here are the minutes for your information!

Rich (ie me) is back looking after elderly parent family commitments this week, but I do aim to squeeze in those Cyberpunk benchmarks I talked about last week (PS4, Switch 2, PS4 Pro, Series S) before moving on to Strix Halo, which I'm very, very curious to check out.

John will be working on our Donkey Kong Bananza Switch 2 review, but also plans to cover Tony Hawk Pro-Skater 3+4 in a full DF Retro episode and - yes - we really want to do something with the new Doom SNES cartridge put together by Randy Linden!

Alex has just submitted the first draft edit of his Mario Kart 64 decompilation project video and after this will be looking at a hitherto unknown retro path tracing project - and it's a good one. We're also keen on doing another developer interview on Doom: The Dark Ages, this time concentrating on id's approach to path tracing.

Tom is working on the big Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 review.

Oliver will be handing in his own multi-game Switch 2 vs Steam Deck round-up soon and after that? Well, embargoed #content, that's what - and I'm very curious to see how that one turns out... it should be very cool!

Will continues to handle our written word content on Eurogamer having delivered all the deals in last week's Prime Day(s). Let's not get into the whole Game(s) Pass, Summer Game(s) Fest thing again. And yes, it's back to those mammoth guide revamps.

It's been a while, but we should be on the final straight with the long awaited VRR upgrade for our capture tools and after that, there's more "maintenance" work to do - we're looking for ways to improve the video codecs we use in Adobe Premiere or else shift to other codecs. Editing 4K video remains a bit of a pain!

Anyway, as usual, please do let us know of anything interesting we should be looking into! Have a great week!

I'm curious: how does your current 4K editing workflow in Premiere compares to Oliver's in FCPX? Is there any significant differences in the coded files?

Will you guys reacting to the Ghost of Yotei SoP? How you guys seeing the visual upgrades, enough to call this a generation leap or rather a more careful art design first aproach?

The problem is PS4 games already looked 2 generations ahead… but I think most people are forgetting that they were all also 30fps. Not only is Yotei rendering at a much higher resolution, it is also 60fps. But Tsushima looked better than most “next gen” games already, so how do you improve in an obvious way? You can’t, you need to look at the finer details, like the fact that blades of grass and trees miles in the distance were blowing in the wind. The birds flying didn’t just disappear when they got too far away, they disappeared when they flew past the horizon line, the lighting, volumetric fog. And then there are things we don’t know, like how long do your footprints persist, bodies, destructive environments, weather, what happens when your clothes get wet. Of course the art style is the same, it’s a sequel!! But it’s funny how all the people crying that it looks just like DLC have never once said that about Gears of War, where the only difference has ever been a resolution bump, and in 5 they added a parasail. But Gears 5 plays the exact same as every previous entry, and it should, it’s a sequel, not a new ip. The fact that they have pretty much overhauled every game mechanic makes Yotei the furthest thing from DLC imaginable. I also saw people complaining that all they did was replace stances with weapons… yup and that is already more than most sequels change. I mean we still don’t even know if there is a 30fps or 40fps RT mode.. 1080p 120? People are judging a poor compressed stream instead of actual gameplay. Maybe DF has been in talks to get the actual footage from Sony. I’d rather not have to listen to Xbox fan boys crying DLC until October when Sony releases yet another GOTY contender. The trailer also has a 98% like ratio. So most people love it

GoW 2018, HZD and Spider-Man also ran with just 30 fps on PS4, but when the sequels released on PS5, those reached much higher fidelity with 60 fps too, so its possible. Tsushima looking so good still today cuz of its art design, not its graphical fidelity. And maybe they didnt wanted to sacrafice the art design with higher fidelity, but still, the two games are looking quite the same. Maybe my opinion will change when it releases and I will take a look at it on my C1. I already pre ordered Yotei weeks ago and I didnt planning to cancel, so I like the game so far, Im just a little confused about that small graphical upgrade.

Same here Dani - even more so with the extended gameplay deep dive than the prior trailers, I was struck by how little graphical advancement there seems to be - especially difficult to avoid comparing to AC Shadows atm, which looks generationally ahead. But like you said, sometimes seeing it live with controller in hand is very different to watching a trailer. I too am excited for it regardless and curious how much change there has been that maybe the DF guys have picked up that we haven't.

Ps5 Pro will get FSR4 Support next year. An Frankenstein RDNA architecture nobody really knows what it supports. Since I ordered a Framework Desktop with Strix Halo I asked myself how likely it is that RDNA 3.5 will get FSR 4 aswell. It does not support FP8 like RDNA3 but it is often (always?) accompanied by a strong NPU based on XDNA2. Could this NPU help out the GPU lifting the maths for FSR4?

Super stoked for Oliver’s forthcoming Apple content!
