Hello everyone and welcome to the latest weekly update from Digital Foundry, hot on the heels of the Monday morning #content meeting. It's an exciting week, with lots going on that I'm very excited to share - so let's get straight into it. And our update begins with the reason why we decided to push DF Direct Weekly #232 live a day earlier than usual.

Oliver has been working on Silent Hill f for us and at the time of writing, the embargo has already lifted. We're aiming to publish a PlayStation focused review later today. Why not on embargo? Well, first of all, he's a busy guy and the edit is still in progress. Secondly... well, the embargo is so early that the vast majority of our audience is asleep (!) so we're looking to push the video live in the more usual 3pm to 4pm BST slot. After that? Well, how about an iPhone 17 Pro review?

Tom is going to be working on Dying Light: The Beast in concert with Oliver, while remaining on the lookout for any Borderlands 4 performance patches. Beyond that, there's a lot of prep work - we're going to need Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 captures from existing systems as we await Switch 2 Edition code, for example.

Alex is finishing up his PC review for Silent Hill f and after that, he returns to his big Switch 2 DLSS analysis piece. It's been a long time in the offing, but we're hoping to complete it this week.

John may well be in Japan for the Tokyo Game Show at this point, but he's left us a parting gift - we'll have a full 4K HDR review video for Ghost of Yōtei on embargo, which is September 25th at 2pm BST.

Rich (ie me) hopes you enjoyed the Strix Halo video! There are a couple of projects I'd like to pursue - first of all, getting to the bottom of what the FSR 4 INT8 DLL actually is. Performance actually looks pretty good on RDNA 3, but does the quality match FSR 4 FP8 on RDNA 4? What are the implications for handhelds and even Xbox Series X? Can we actually get a comment from AMD about it? Beyond that - prep time for handhelds. I want to be ready for the arrival of the Asus Xbox Ally and Ally X, so that means returning to the existing handhelds and also getting ready for the arrival of Strix Halo handhelds.

That's where we are for this week. We've also got to figure out Silent Hill f Xbox coverage somehow, as we alluded to in DF Direct Weekly #232 - but the chances are we'll probably have to end up buying it. I'm not sure what can be done, but it is getting tougher to cover Xbox as of late.

Anyway, as usual, please feel free to leave your comments and your #content suggestions! Have a great week!

Total bummer about the Xbox Silent Hill f code. It's crazy how Microsoft is neglecting the importance of games media nowadays.

A full 4K HDR review video for Ghost of Yōtei you say 👀 I'm glad for the push for more HDR content. 💪🏻

You're going to need a bigger mug Rich!!! What a week, and we also have a pretty sizeable State of Play rumoured, likely on Wednesday this week. I mean do people really need sleep? I guess we will find out

SodaPop6548

More proof that Microsoft is abandoning the Xbox ecosystem, IMHO.

I'd be very interested to see the viability of FSR 4 on handhelds such as the Steam Deck. There's lot of videos out there with FSR 4 on Steam Deck but none that can compare and give a good idea of the trade off of performance vs quality. I'm curious for instance if it's a better option to use a FSR 4 INT8 performance/balance vs FSR 3 quality. Also, does FSR 4 INT8 introduces more latency?

Looking forward to the "John Review" ©️ of Ghost. Glad he had time for that.

I’m really interested in the whole FSR 4 back porting effort. I saw something about a Wimma compile on RDNA 3 and 3.5 potentially having better performance than the current int8 version. I think the really interesting thing here is going to be stuff like the Xbox ally X and ally x we’re obviously the steam deck is of an older vintage while these devices should be able to have enough grunt and a modern enough ML architecture to potentially get it running relatively well

Any word on John’s Tony Hawk 3+4 video?

AMH

Are you guys gonna cover the Touryst Deluxe?

Bulbous_Bow

Absolutely. It makes such a difference. Even outside of HDR content itself (I’m assuming it adds extra work) more comments in general analysis about the quality of HDR implementation would always be welcome. It’s as impactful as ray tracing in my opinion

I’d be really interested in the previously mooted 5080 tier GeForce Now review. I may be basing this on nothing at all, but if it does have access to server grade CPUs (I think the Direct coverage mentioned the EPYC tier?) could that mitigate stutter moreso even than a consumer level 9800X3D? Input latency should also be interesting compared to consoles and PC (I think both comparisons are relevant as some are pitching it as a potential console killer) . Ultimately I’d be interested in subjectively where the team would place it in terms of their own preferences. Presumably you would prefer to play Doom The Dark Ages on an actual PC with a 5080 right in front of you, but all things considered would you prefer GFN 5080 or your own 5070, or a 9070XT, etc? How good is it really?
