Hi everyone and welcome to the latest update from Digital Foundry - first up, we didn't publish DF Direct Weekly #236 today as the benchmark comparisons for the Xbox Ally X were incorrect. Thanks to the Supporters who pointed out that the OG Ally benchmarks didn't quite stack up. Although the 3DMark score matched the official database, game performance was lower. I've nuked the install, reset from scratch and the numbers now look closer to the 20-30% gains seen elsewhere. We will reshoot that segment for a public release tomorrow. Frustrating but thanks for comments and reports that prevented bad data making its way to the broader audience.

Let's talk #content then.

Tom is handling Pokémon Legends Z-A for us, but before that he's working with Rich (ie me) to get to the bottom of PS5's Power Saver mode. We've used it in Demon's Souls on PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro and there's intriguing stuff here - could this be a template for the upcoming handheld?

Oliver is working on our console review for The Outer Worlds 2, due later this week. Beyond that? As a prospective ROG Xbox Ally X owner, he's VERY interested in seeing how well Bazzite runs on it. Persona 3 Reload on Switch? Oliver wants to check it out.

John is away right now but is working on our coverage for Ninja Gaiden 4. After that, he'll be moving on to Xbox 360 launch anniversary retro coverage!

Alex is obviously intrigued by that RTX Remix path tracing mod, but first things first, he'll be providing a PC performance review for The Outer Worlds 2.

Rich (ie me) is still on the big handhelds review, focusing on Ally X, but obviously we'll try to cover the non-X and of course, GPD Win 5 remains in its box waiting to be tested.

Meanwhile, work continues rapidly behind the scenes on the new retro podcast and our fantastic looking website is now in beta - we'll be announcing a new hire soon. All of this is happening 100 percent because we are now fully independent and because of your support. Many, many thanks.

As usual, do let us know of any projects or content you'd like us to look into and feel free to comment on the above. Thanks - as ever - for your support.

I will say, I used to have the DF homepage pinned to check once or twice a day, but having to check my Patreon notifications has forced me to more actively engage with all the Patreons I’m subscribed to…which is nice! regardless, looking forward to seeing the new site!

Keep up the amazing work! I'd love to see a new update on HDR mods sometime in the future. Would be great to see a newer comparison between SpecialK HDR injection, RTX HDR, AutoHDR, RenoDX and Luma. Thank you!

Jarno

”…that RTX Remix path tracing mod” - I presume this is referring to the GTA IV project?

Yannick Ex

I'm also interested to see bazzite on the rog xbox ally x, with a performance comparison with Windows of course 😄.

Engin Cetin

Please take a look at sonic racing and digimon.

Lukas Underscore

Very exciting line up! I would be very interested in seeing the team one day tackling games like silent hill 2 or final fantasy 16 on the xbox ally x (or whatever its called), games that are too ambitious for steam deck.

Chris Munch

The Outer Worlds was such a fantastic game - and importantly it didn't make me motion sick like the Fallout games do - well at least not nearly as quickly anyways. Why can't devs offer the ability to turn off all the swaying in games, it's like still forcing head bob on.

Optimized Prime

Btw, DF Direct Weekly #235 (Oct 11) episode is missing on iOS Podcasts app. Is that intentional?

AMH

Yeah somehow people are letting bamco get away with that game running at 30 fps on ps5

MittenFacedLass

Thought it had a 60fps performance mode?

MittenFacedLass

There's multiple videos from multiple creators on YouTube showing off a performance mode at 60fps... It sure seems like there are?

Engin Cetin

🤔 huh… last i checked there was no modes. Do you have a link?

Engin Cetin

Ok yeah sonic has modes in it. But we were talking about bamco‘s digimon. 😅

MittenFacedLass

Sorry, completely missed the Bamco mention earlier somehow. >.< My bad!

AMH

I’m actually surprised that nobody is complaining about this despite the game being relatively popular.

AMH

Hi for the Persona 3 reload could you guys compare it to the steamdeck version? I’ve heard quite conflicting reports on that version, some stating that it easily runs at 60 fps whereas others say it fluctuates a lot in that mode.

A lot of games offer a setting for camera shake, it's typically a slider from 10-0 or simply on/off. I actually can't recall playing a 3rd or 1st person game that didn't have that option. I don't get motion sick, and can play VR all day, I just think the effect is bad and it's completely unrealistic to what happens in real life. Your head does not bob up and down when you walk, unless you are hoping lol

Engin Cetin

Me too. I guess many people are playing on pc with high resolution and framerate. idk

Chris Munch

Yeah, I'm well aware of how camera shake works - and I'm not talking about camera shake, I'm talking about the motion swaying you get in games like Fallout, that make me motion sick in record time. It's different than just head-bob, it's when they have weapons and such swaying, again Fallout 4 is pretty much the peak of puking when it comes to that. Maybe AAA titles now tend to have all sorts of 'accessibility' settings, at least stuff from Microsoft anyways, but even as they've released multiple updates, including major ones, to Fallout 4 they've just never bothered to remove that sway, and it's incredibly nauseating. The Outer Worlds, however, doesn't do it nearly as much, and as such doesn't make me want to throw up, well, at least not in the first 5-10 mins like Fallout does. The FPS viewpoint still does catch-up with me in Outer Worlds, but it's a more typical hour or so. I think the motion sickness stuff is a lot more widespread than people think, since most people who get sick just never play the games again, and thus it goes underreported in general. I could be wrong, and I'm not saying to dumb down anything for the majority who don't get motion sick, but a lot of these fixes are very simple, just additional options or very minor tweaks.
