Hello there - you know the score by now, surely? Every Thursday this post appears in your Patreon feed, outlining what we're going to be doing in the next episode of DF Direct Weekly, along with an appeal for your topic suggestions, comments and questions!

Topics on the docket? Well... Sarah Bond's comments about a "premium", "high-end" next generation Xbox come into focus. So, what's the play here? An admission that subsidised consoles don't work any more and we'll just need to pay more? Or is it actually a relatively inexpensive PC replacement that is also a console? Maybe it's both!

Bond's comments about Xbox Ally X hinting at the hybrid console/Windows approach for that next generation console is also a discussion point. I think it's fair to say that the team's viewpoints on this are straightforward: Windows 11 needs a huge amount of work before that would be an acceptable baseline OS for a console.

Other topics? Alex will be looking at the new Nvidia Bonsai demo and if there is time (no promises), Rich will take a look at Death Stranding 2's power saver implementation on PS5. We have a video with Demon's Souls and Days Gone Remastered analysed coming soon - but DS2 arrived a little too late.

Also, we're considering a "PS5 Pro - one year on" segment or even a standalone video. Have you bought one? What do you think of it? Please let us know. Other comments fine, but please highlight whether or not you actually own the hardware.

Finally, we've not been invited to any press events, haven't signed any NDAs or indeed know anything concrete about it, but there is a strong rumour that the Halo Remake will be announced this weekend. Again, we're unsure if this will be able to be included owing to timing, whether we add it to the public release, or whether we make a standalone video.

OK then - just time to round off this post with the customary panel and deadline info: this week, it's going to be Rich (ie me), John and Alex speaking into their microphones and the deadline for submissions is 8am BST on Friday.

What’s a game you’ve reassessed after initially disliking it?

Any thoughts on the new Football Manager? Big move to take a year off by scrapping a game that wasn't working to completely overhaul a tried and tested basic game so its UI/Graphics better meet modern standards.

Last week we lost Tomonobu Itagaki — he was only 58, way too young. He was the creator of Dead or Alive and the modern Ninja Gaiden — such a huge influence. His goodbye post on Facebook was really heartbreaking… and Harada’s tribute — the Tekken producer — was just as moving. Do you guys have any favorite memories of Itagaki? Maybe a game, or a story that stuck with you?

Do you not think the death of consoles would significantly reduce the pool of potential gamers as not everyone wants/can afford a gaming PC? If that's the case, should we not support console exclusives as a necessary evil to maintain a key part of the gaming eco-system

I’ve been very impressed by the visual presentation of Double Fine’s Keeper - it uses UE5 tech quite beautifully to create more abstract environments and painterly lighting setups. It does seem quite heavy though, with some fairly substantial dips on PC anyway - though it’s not a quick reflex game by any means so easier to deal with than most. Is it a game anyone on the team has had an opportunity to look at?

Greetings Men of Silicon, how about adding HDR testing to your suite in future? Is it just badly tone mapped SDR with a raised black floor? What about the peak nit level? I feel HDR is not in a great place in games at present which is too bad, as it looks great when done well.

Hello, brothers in gaming! I see a lot of people online wincing about the idea of an expensive console from Xbox. I think this reaction is rather shortsighted. PCs have always been relatively expensive to upgrade, but consoles usually have significant bang for buck. Is paying one thousand dollars for a device that will last you five years (minimum?) for a main hobby really that unreasonable? Love to hear your thoughts, cheers!

Bonjour rrrrrR ooooO ggggG Ally X testers!! Regarding Sony’s rumored handheld, I was wondering if you think they might employ a more open operating system considering the current competition. A web browser seems likely but how far towards a windows handheld experiece might they drift? Steam Deck and the windows handhelds all allow access to the underlying operating system so you can install other apps, run emulators and customize in numerous ways like changing the language to french. Just curious if you think they’ll keep it more locked down a la Nintendo Switch or loosen things up a bit. Keep the great content coming!

Greetings DFers! Why aren't benchmarking tools a standard in PC games? Does it take so much time to develop one? I don't want to be hopping in and out of menus during the first mission of the game. Also, what are the best in-game benchmark tools you recall? I remember being very impressed by the PC port of Returnal. Cheers!

G'day Gents! The new ROG Xbox Ally X highlighted something interesting to me. Handhelds NEED upscaling and currently, AMD aren't positioned well here. Comparing the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and the Xbox Ally X, how much value do you place on the ML version of XeSS provided by the Intel handheld? I'm stuggling to decide on which to get.

Good day gents, hope you are all well. Bit of a broad question from me..... is Linux a viable option for modern gaming as a replacement to Windows? Do the main vendors still offer full driver support? Can you still take advantage of features like gsync? is there a penalty to performance? and indeed, are most games supported in this environment? Thanks as always for the great content!

Jordan + Cinewhirl

Xbox seems to be dominating the headlines lately with all these announcements, little comments, and everything in between. Pivoting into handhelds, hybrid systems, closing down companies, hinting at the future etc. Do you get the sense there is really a coordinated strategy here, or are they flailing and panicking and just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks?

Peter Karadimas

Hello gents! Since launch, Borderlands 4 has had a patch about every 1-2 weeks, which requires a lengthy shader precompilation at launch, and further precompilation steps each time you load into a zone. This along with monthly GPU driver updates requiring another shader compilation, it feels like I spend more time generating shaders than I do actually playing games. What’s the long term solution to this problem, and is there anything unreal engine game devs in particular should be doing better?

HorizonOfANewDay

Based on rumored silicon for the next box and PlayStation next, what kind of performance do you suspect we can expect? If they go with RDNA5, I assume we can only speculate...so speculate away! If MS goes the WinBox route, is it possible we get a truly stripped to the kernel version of Windows that we could use on PC handhelds to make them more Xbox than the Xbox Ally X? Any chance Windows goes modular? Truly remove all the bloat in the FSE then load all the bloat, not the 1/2 measure we have on the Xbox Ally X.

Hello gentlemen, PS5 Pro shook expectations of how expensive a console can be and probably WILL be in coming generations. I’d consider it plausible that a PS6 might easily reach a 700€, maybe even 900€ price point. But is that really such a bad thing? As far as PC builds go, in this day and age I’d consider even a 1.000€ machine a “cheap” one. To me, the idea of 1.000€ hardware being put to use with console like efficiency seems like an ideal solution for someone who wants better graphics without needing to invest into a PC instead of a car – of course given that there are Series S like options for gamers with less resources available. What do you think?

1040STF

So, the cat’s out of the bag — Jason Schreier just revealed that Xbox’s strategy these past few years has been to grow revenue by 30% every year. We’d all been wondering what their plan actually was — it didn’t seem to make much sense sometimes, but now it kind of does. What do you think that means for Xbox going forward? Do you think smaller, more creative projects from their studios are safe under that kind of pressure? Like, take Double Fine’s Keeper for example — it just came out, it looks amazing, but it’s not really the kind of game that’s gonna blow up the charts right away. It feels more like something people will discover over time.

Greetings from Greece! Where there is always path traced sunlight everywhere. It is an honor to have the chance to communicate with you. I was wondering if the situation with developers is so bad as a comment you made pointed to the "best being hired at AI". This means that gaming no longer attracts the best talent? Sad if think that some of the best programmers in the 90s were gamers and started from gaming. Thanks!

Eric Benoit

I dont really understand Sarahs Bond comment that because Minecraft, Fortnite,Roblox are everywhere exclusives have no value. If all platforms librarys look the same, wont exclusives create distinction? I remember that i only bought an OGXbox so i could play Shenmue 2, and i stuck with PS3 over xbox360 because of MGS4 (hi audi).

Greetings esteemed gentlemen, I’ve recently helped a console-gamer friend make the jump to PC greatness. He’s running a RTX 4070 and I showed him how to use the NVIDIA App to "optimise"his games to keep things simple (and reduce my pro-bono Tech Support hours!) But have I sent him up the garden path? Aside from directing him to the rich history of Digital Foundry content to get him up to speed, do you have any other advice for newcomers trying to find that sweet spot between performance and image quality without needing the knowledge that comes with years of sweaty gaming? If only there were an Alex’s Optimised Settings Aaaap for those users!

Hello Foundrymen—quick two-parter: 1. Reflex 2 / Frame Warp. We’ve seen a public tech demo from modder PureDark this week, while NVIDIA still lists Frame Warp as “coming soon” (with prior messaging that it’d debut in The Finals and Valorant). Can you break down what Reflex 2 actually changes vs classic Reflex, and whether Frame Warp can or should run alongside DLSS Frame Generation/MFG? If they do coexist, what are the practical latency/visual trade-offs? 2. RTX Neural Texture Compression (NTC). Creator tests/demos suggest big VRAM cuts (claims up to ~7× vs BC formats; some newer demos tout ~90% reductions) with modest performance cost. How does NTC look in real engine use (decode path, streaming/caching), and which engines/pipelines are likeliest to adopt first? Any theories on when Reflex 2 lands in shipping games and when NTC shows up in real titles—and how much difference they’ll actually make? Thanks and have a great week! (Feel free to just answer one if I was too long, I was rambling a bit, but a lot of cool tech this week)

Hi guys, I bought a PS5 Pro last year after my cat broke my original console! I've generally been pleased with it although I don't think developers are taking advantage of it. Especially as it doesn't seem as though PSSR is quite living up to expectations in causing graphical artifacts. When do you think that FSR 4 will be coming to PS5 Pro or more likely folded into PSSR? Cheers lads!

Reyes9

Bought the PS5 Pro day one after upgrading from base PS5. Seeing many games having "quality 60fps" modes really does make a difference, especially in the big games like Death Stranding 2 and most recently Ghost of Yotei. Doesn't mean it's perfect though as also many games suffers from poor implementations of PSSR and/or not enough quality/difference in the actual Pro-modes, for example just a higher resolution or minor improvements to shadows/reflections etc. Overall though very happy with the purchase.

regawdless

Hello gents! There are reports of people installing Bazzite on the ROG (not R.O.G.!!!) Xbox Ally devices, resulting in up to 30% better performance in some games. That's basically a gen to gen gain these days. Shouldn't that be a disqualifier for their FSE in the low performance / low power consumption handheld market? Cheers

Greguwu

Hi gents. Broken shaders pre compilation, badly designed graphics settings menu, bad display detection, broken DLSS/Reflex or other API implementations, there's no end to the modern PC port shenanigans you can have at launch. The PC is an open platform, but I sometimes wonder if Steam should ensure some technical requirements checklists akin to the ones required to publish your games on consoles to prevent those situations. Would that be a bad idea ? Keep on keeping on.

Retro Sean

[Obligatory salutations here!]. The current Xbox Series consoles have the ability to reboot into Developer Mode (if you jump through the right hoops). Do you suppose the next console would have Xbox OS mode and the ability to reboot into Windows and to just work as a PC? Could that be their plan?

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

Should Nintendo compete in the $1,000 handheld space with a Switch 2 PrOLED?  I think all Big N would need to do is switch to TSMC for an easy 2x performance per watt uplift (and Ampere already made the journey from Samsung to TSMC), plus a bit more RAM and an OLED screen. I think it would be awesome. Do you think that would be enough to keep the PC tanks off Nintendo's lawn?

Dani Ádám

I bought a PS5 Pro day1. Overall Im definitely satisfied with it, even if there are some bad examples too for Pro supported games where mainly PSSR and its weaknesses the problem. With the upcoming FSR4/PSSR2 version, I think the Pro will be even greater choice for the players who wants more fidelity and smoothness. Cant wait to play GTA VI, Wolverine, Exodus, RE9, etc on the Pro.

NobleHeroine

The problem is that this depends on exactly where a Xbox PC gets positioned. At a 1000 dollars or above, you have a system that costs a similar amount to a standard gaming pc, and likely won't appeal to traditional console buyers, but i think it's an open question if a hardware box that cannot be easily upgraded by an end user will appeal to pc gamers, given the PC's long history of upgradability.

Bonjour Richard and greetings to the honourable guild of distinguished Foundry-men – please hear my request to learn more about electronic entertainment technology: Currently I am having a blast playing Yooka-Replaylee and was wondering, what other overlooked or underrated titles you would love to see getting a similar treatment of re-thinking and improving on the existing basis? Keep up the amazing work and stay bespoke!

CABBAC

Hello Foundrymen of the Digitalverse. With The Verge reporting this week that Microsoft has raised the price of an Xbox dev kit from $1,500 to $2,000, do you think this will be an effective strategy for them in destroying the Xbox once and for all or might they also be aided by Phil wearing a sandwich board reading "Developers not welcome" whilst sticking his middle finger up to everyone at developers conferences to also support the overall Xbox death strategy too?

Bad Hunter

So if it is more expensive, but still punching above its wait like a console should, i wonder how it would be received by the DF team and consumers.

Alexander Zyryanov

I have PS5, but I barely use it because most of the games I play are multi-platform and I have a great gaming PC. I don’t have PS5 Pro and never had any interest in getting it because it will not bridge the chasm between console graphics and what RTX 4090 is capable of.

AMH

Hello gents With all the talk about the Switch 2 “Game Key Cards,” do you think Nintendo could move toward cartridges that just install the game instead of running it directly? If they’re using really cheap, slow cards, maybe the system would just copy the data over or prompt a download if you’re online. I’m wondering how realistic that setup actually is — and whether it could open the door to more game dumping or piracy issues since the full data would be stored locally. I’m also curious if this cheap cartridges even exist in a form that can be usable and would be lucrative enough for publishers.

PS5 Professional owner since launch, I've been generally satisfied with the machine. I will admit that most of the games I've played that I found the Pro to be a totally worth the improvement in were games like FF7 Rebirth and Metaphor ReFantazio, where the extra power offered a fix to software issues that probably shouldn't have needed the Pro to fix. You shouldn't probably get into the habit of fixing bad/mixed software with good hardware, but I guess if it works, its hard for me to complain as an individual user.

Hi DF! Regarding Microsofts next 'console': all I want is a device next to my TV that looks good, runs PC games, and also runs my Xbox library. I don't mind paying a premium for that, if I get 'PC like' value. What are the odds of getting such a device? Would such a device be possible architecturally and licensing wise? Keep up the great work!

Simplex

Greeting and salutations, recently emancipated DF crew, any comments on the recently announced Galaxy XR headset with 4K micro OLEDs, or the rumored Steam Frame standalone VR headset? Also, could you get it on the record that Asus Xbox ROG Ally is NOT a console?

Can you guys do a quick primer on ray tracing / path tracing? When there is a puddle, how easy (or difficult) is it for the developer to change the different techniques for reflections

Chiming in as a PS5 Pro owner for about 8 months now, it's still the gaming equipment I use the most. However, to be fully honest, I don't really believe that it's a "must-buy", even for enthusiasts. It has served me well on quite a lot of games I've played this year, but anytime I want to go to a PS4 or base PS5 game, it irks me to see such underutilised potential. DRS certainly helps some games look better than base PS5, but nothing transformative. Despite this, it does what it says on the box, it's a "PS5, but better". Even in outlier cases like Silent Hill F where it's not a straightforward improvement, I still very much enjoyed my experience with the game. So all in all, still satisfied with it, especially when it comes to noise, but that's because I already enjoyed the base PS5 experience.

Brian

Hey all, I bought a PS5 Pro day one and I’ve been pleased. Honestly, after trading in my PS5 and dusty PS4, it was a reasonable price. The 60fps modes have been the main benefit, but I also really enjoyed the Alan Wake 2 40 fps mode. My biggest complaint about PSSR is the shimmering in complex patterns, like the cloth textures in Ghost of Yōtei and the map in Alan Wake 2. Also excited about the FSR4 upgrade. Any thoughts on how drastic the improvements to image stability might be with FSR4?

BespokeEP

an optional enthusiast mid gen refresh, sold for profit will not have any weight on PS6 pricing. All information from MLiD suggests that PS6 is aiming for around a $500 box. Xbox likely charging $1500+ for Magnus might effect that, but based on the fact that PlayStation hasn't reacted to Xbox's recent price hikes suggest to me that they will gladly let Magnus cost up to $1000 more than PS6, I mean GP ultimate is $200 more than PSPlus Premium!! And you get waaaaay more from Premium. I also think Mark Cerny was commenting on recent leaks about Magnus being much more powerful on paper than PS6 when he states in the recent "Amythest" video that what he is working on for the next PlayStation will punch way above its paper specs, just like PS5 vs Series X.

Hello there Foundrymen! What’s your favourite console in history from each big player (Nintendo, SEGA, SONY, MS) and why? Cheers!

VeryProfessionalDodo

Person who games on Linux for a while now, and I can answer most of these questions. - drivers work differently, but often just as good on Linux as they do on Windows - features like G-Sync work, but things like driver-level frame gen, "game optimisations" and some tweaks don't exist, or need other dedicated software for it; - penalties to performance vary. If it's a CPU bottleneck, you usually get more performance on Linux. If it's a GPU bottleneck it can range from 0-10%, basically; - most games are supported, especially if you buy on Steam. What doesn't work are games with kernel level anti cheat and VR setups are quite finnicky in general. Some launchers require some finagling with things like WINE, but there are guides for most of it, so you aren't alone suffering through those issues Still, what you do get with Linux in my opinion still makes it worth it. Bazzite provides a gaming mode that uses a similar approach to the Steam Deck, and it's the best way to play on the living room. Plus, no ads, no bloatware, just a clean operating system, every time. That feeling matters more than you think once you have it :)

Hi all, I primarily have the Xbox Ally in mind with this, but are Microsoft making a big mistake by twisting and contorting what an Xbox means? The reviews for the handheld are telling. “Great handheld, stop calling it an Xbox”. People have firm conception about what a PlayStation is, what an iPhone is, and similarly what an Xbox is. Just come clean, talk about third party plans, their upcoming prebuilt PCs plans, but get the pain out of the way. Otherwise people being gaslit about what an Xbox is will just keep festering and dragging down the brand going into the next gen.

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hello Gentlemen! Re PS5 initially I was tempted but given I’d built a 4070 Ti Super rig a couple months prior to the console launch I didn’t even felt the need. Especially since my PS5, while quite a decent price of hardware, is the least used console in my gaming history. Cheers!

Chicken Point

Hello! With one year's hindsight, what are some of the alternative possibilities/priorities the PS5 Pro might have pursued, and what might have been their results? For example, imagine Sony had kept the same target RRP, but instead of new ML technology, they had solely boosted the rasterization power instead? Or added more RAM? One idea that appeals to me, though it's probably unrealistic, would be to prioritize the reduction of pop-in. All the best, Glen

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hi Gents! Apple sort of silently dropped some M5 devices. Given how performant it is wouldn’t it be cool if they released a handheld with that SOC? iPads with M chips are amazing but quite an overkill. However, if they made a piece of gaming equipment we could get a really strong competitor. Cheers!

dark_bt

hello Digi-Fou! I bought a PS5 pro earlier this year - it was my first new gaming hardware since I bought the Xbox One X in 2018. I was always hesitant to buy a base PS5 due to poor image quality issues showing up in many of your game reviews. I think I may have been spoiled by some very good IQ on the One X, especially Red Dead 2. I was hoping PSSR would do the trick to solve these IQ issues in current gen titles, but it's been very mixed. I had a blast with the new Silent Hill games, and especially appreciated the super-smooth performance aside from traversal stutters, but obviously the PSSR artifacts create some IQ issues. Sometimes I wish I just went for the base PS5, but I'm hoping my investment will prove worthy once FSR4's improvements are back-ported into PSSR next year - and surely GTA VI will be a stunner, right? So I guess for now, I'm "fine" with my purchase and I'm still holding out hope that it will completely win me over by next year.

Sven Dahlin

Hi gents, do you think Microsoft might allow a full Windows desktop mode on the Xbox “Magnus”? It could be structured as an opt-in feature or a paid add-on. That would give Microsoft a clear advantage over PlayStation, offering a cost-effective mid-range gaming PC, ideal for kids and students. It would also provide a more curated experience than typical pre-built or DIY PCs. And since the hardware won’t be subsidized, there’s no real downside for Microsoft.

Leftisthominid

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Alex Battaglia the Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story most publishers would tell you. Alex Battaglia was a Lord of Optimization, so powerful and so wise he could use his knowledge to prevent stutter. He had such a mastery of graphics settings that he could even keep frame-times smooth—without hitching. He became so powerful that the only thing he feared was the lack of shader pre-compilation… which, of course, plagued every Unreal game he tested. He taught the developers everything he knew, but Unreal Engine—and DirectX 12—betrayed him. It’s ironic— he could save others from the #StutterStruggle, but not himself.

Leftisthominid

Now that DF is independent, do you think you all will adopt the supremacy of the Oxford comma?

Leftisthominid

Given that there are a good Digimon game and a good Pokémon game out around the same time, would you ever do a head-to-head to compare optimization and performance between Digimon Story: Time Stranger and Pokémon Legends Z-A?

MattGPT

HI Gents PS5 Pro owner here, I picked mine up on launch, paid £563 (Very 20% off offer) and sold my PS5 OG for £350 so it did not feel too painful. I have overall found it good, it feels a bit like the upgrade from playing PS4 games on PS5 (TLOUP2 being a really good example of the gains there), though the gains have been less from PS5 to Pro. I have no issues with the upgrade and I would still do it again now. I am slightly disappointed with PSSR, but more with the developers than anything else. There have been several brilliant implementations and a few more good ones, but overall it seems to have been a real half-arsed effort from devs leading to issues. With some work it seems to come somewhere between FSR2 and FSR4, my understanding is that it uses the same inputs as FSR2 so it should not require a huge amount of work and the Pro has enough extra power to implement it with headroom for other graphical upgrades. Is the reason a lot of 3rd party devs have such bad implementations because it has come after release for most of them so it was not planned for the start, is implementation harder than we have been lead to believe or some other reason for the many sub-par implementations? Do engines such as UE5 support it natively yet, or do the devs have to manage integration as well as managing their graphical budget? Do we know yet if PSSR can be updated directly by Sony similar to how Nvidia can override DLSS in their app, or do devs have to do the work every time? Thanks for all your hard work and I hope you are enjoying your independence! Matt

Chicken Point

Microsoft's lexical revisionism is a fascinating topic. My current interpretation is that Microsoft has two groups of people in mind: 1. the 30 million Xbox console gamers, to whom "Xbox" owes its brand recognition. 2. gen alpha gamers who allegedly don't care about platform (such as Xbox) or hardware (such as Xbox consoles), and just want to play Roblox wherever they want. The second group is much more lucrative than the first -- as is commonly acknowledged, the console market is not growing. With that background, I believe Microsoft is trying to cash in, or liquidate, some of the brand recognition that is associated with the name "Xbox" to try to intice gen alpha gamers, who do not currently have any interest in Xbox consoles. Microsoft are happy to alienate Xbox console gamers in this process, because the gen alpha group is (let's suppose) much bigger and more lucrative. So, their strategy is something like, "excuse me, fellow gamers! I notice that you enjoy Roblox and similar titles. Might I persuade you to refer to such games as "Xbox" games?" My impression is that the strategy is unlikely to succeed. Roblox-type players are not going to start referring to their laptop or phone as an "Xbox" because an advert told them to. I imagine they will find the adverts forgettable, devoid of content: "oh look -- that ad says I can play games on my phone, which I already knew". The lexical revision ad campaign is memorable and controversial *only* to gaming enthusiasts who care about the history of the Xbox brand. So, not the target audience. Why not just rip the band-aid off and announce their new strategy? I think they want to avoid alienating their core console fanbase more than is necessary -- they are still somewhat lucrative, and do a lot of free grassroots marketing for the company, sustaining its brand recognition.

Leftisthominid

If Microsoft really leans into a “premium” console with Windows underpinnings, what’s to prevent shader-compilation stutter from becoming a zoonotic transfer from PC to consoles? Is the hope that developers will always pre-compile shaders for Magnus the way they do for traditional consoles?

Karvox

Hello team DF. With respect to some of Sarah Bond's recent comments around 'Premium' console experiences, and the recent reporting from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg surrounding a targeted 30% profit margin from Xbox internally at Microsoft what do you think the actual ceiling is for next generation Xbox console/pc hybrid pricing? Could we see the first $1000 CAD (or more) 'consoles'?

Pol Kallamata

I've owned a PS5 Pro since January. The most notable benefits from the hardware, I've seen when booting up a titles I'd previously played like Stellar Blade and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and seeing a night and day difference in sharpness at high frame rates. With other older titles that were patched its been much hard for me to perceive the improvements from the Pro versions. With this year's major releases (DS2 & Yotei) I assume the image looks better than on a base model but its hard to know what I would have been missing out on had I not upgraded. Do you think there is a different direction that Sony could have gone with for the pro-model that would have made for more easily appreciable visual differences for users instead of focusing primarily on better upscaling? Could the Pro have instead been a machine with much more capable RT cores that enhanced the lighting of every game it supported?

Leftisthominid

If the #StutterStruggle were ever truly defeated and a new age of PC gaming began, would that make Alex Battaglia the Patron Saint of Smooth Frametimes, or would he ascend to some higher plane beyond frametime graphs entirely?

Spodlude

Hi gents, has there ever been a time where a specific version of windows has offered a gaming advantage or disadvantage? When I started PC gaming in the early 2000s I used a repurposed server as my main PC but i mainly played browser based games like runescape and habbo hotel, hence i dont recall being handicapped in any way. For example has Pro vs Home, 32 vs 64 bit ever been any better performance or usability wise. With the xbox full screen experience and precompiled shaders we could finally be moving towards a situation where there actually is a benefit to one version vs another?

TheAdam

Hello DF Crew. Another turbulent tech week. After the Game Freak leak and the alleged production costs for Pokémon games, I'm wondering about the real state of the gaming industry. Is Game Freak's and Nintendo's path the healthier one for the entire industry? Meaning, not letting game budgets explode and perhaps producing titles that aren't technically outstanding? What cost-cutting measures can be taken? Firing all staff and replacing them with AI agents isn't the answer, even if Elon wants to do it. Thank you very much for your dedication, time, and good spirits.

Bulbous_Bow

Totally agree. Not exactly what it’s sold for, but for me its best feature is keeping elden ring within the VRR window. Ground breaking it ain’t, but welcome it most certainly is. If Sony hadn’t gone and cancelled all their recent first party output I think we would have seen more impressive output recently

(Don’t be a) Richard

I’ve had a PS5 Pro since launch and while it hasn’t been a game changer, it’s been a nice update and I don’t regret the upgrade from a base model. The release of the PS4 and PS5 Pro models has made me think about the future handheld console and how hardware refresh will play out for that system. Do you think it’s a safe bet that a handheld will follow a similar tick-tock release cycle to the home console with a refresh up-spec every 3 or 4 years? Unlike Nintendo who we don’t necessarily expect an upgrade to uplift performance (rather OLED and battery life), it seems to me that Sony may want a PS portable to keep pace with what’s happening with portable PCs as well as Sonys own console, and to do so probably means more frequent iterative releases for the hardware. In particular to support Sony’s own distribution of games to PC.

Spodlude

This is a question for Ollie. I've noticed you often mention tech that you've bought for yourself or games you've added to a collection. Do you get FOMO regarding the latest releases? Does your job at DF help to satiate your desire yet simultaneously fuel your interest like a vicious cycle?

Snorlax cat

Hello gentlemen. This is a question for the famous triple/trio foundry men that are today on the panel. Nope it is not about that Matt piscatela said that the ps5 surpassed the concurrent user base of the ps3 (the other famous i.e. triple) during its generation. It is actually SERIOUS: sorry for all caps. *What happens if Microsoft wakes up and launches Windows 12, if they don't care about the consoles would that make for a worse experience on the upcoming "next-gen xbox"?*

Jiminy the 26th

Good morning, afternoon or night. Based on a rough guess, how expensive will the PlayStation handheld be? A handheld running PS5 games, even in 2027/2028, gives me the impression of a somewhat pricey machine. I assume around 450-550 US dollars!

Chicken Point

Oliver isn't on the panel this week!

(Don’t be a) Richard

G’day team. What do you want a ‘premium’ next gen Xbox to include, and what price range do you think they need to be at for consumers to be interested? Is it important for the device to differentiate itself from a non-box branded device or whatever Valve puts out next, and in what way?

BespokeEP

I don't think you will see a full web browser or open OS on a PlayStation console. It opens the door to viruses and hacking and would require more of the storage reserved for OS. The most annoying thing about Magnus will be how many resources will be reserved for the OS, the constant windows updates, there's nothing like hours of updates before you can play a game. You also may need to wipe your HD every once and awhile to clean the registry to gain back lost performance...

If we are getting a PC-like Xbox next generation, do we have any faith in Microsoft to get Windows ready with a console interface that works in a similar way to SteamOS? Personally, given Microsoft's track record on this (Games For Windows Live, Windows 10 UWP apps that crash if you look at them funny, the Microsoft Store and the mess that is the Xbox app), I have my doubts.

Container7

Will the Switch 3 have analogue triggers?

spud19870

Hello Digital Foundry Team, It seems to be a given that Microsoft are going after the pre-build PC market, do we anticipate a price point of £800-£1000? Then looking of the specs of Pre-build PC's currently you can get a Ryzen 7 5700X and a 5060 + 16GB ram for around £1000. Do we anticipate similar specs or do we think Microsoft will take a hit in traditional console fashion and potentially spec higher than this to provide more vaule when compared to the current pre-build market?

BespokeEP

Dear Knights of the Digitally Fondled table of gentlemen :D That Mashable Xbox presser... Errrr, I mean "interview" was the cringiest of all cringe. I've never seen a more rehearsed interview in my life, with "questions" obviously written by MS. Why can't they just let rumours live as rumours instead of commenting on everything and putting their whole leg in their mouth when they inevitably aboutface?

Mario Laborem

Hello to the entire Digital Foundry team! I currently own a PlayStation 5 Pro, which I bought this January, and I have to say—it’s been a fantastic purchase. I upgraded from my PlayStation 4 Slim, and despite the higher price here in Argentina (where I live), I felt it was worth it. I have a high-end 50-inch 4K Smart TV from 2022 that supports VRR and 120 Hz, so I can really make the most of the console. Video games are my main source of entertainment. I also play on PC and Xbox Series S, but PlayStation is where I spend most of my gaming time. The PS5 Pro has lived up to my expectations, and I’m especially looking forward to the upcoming PSSR technology update planned for next year—it sounds very promising. Just one question: do you think the PS4 game upgrade option included on the PS5 Pro will also see any improvements? Thanks for all your great work, and please keep doing what you do—free from outside influence!

SodaPop6548

Good day to you my friends! Something I’ve been thinking about is how consoles are in demand and the next evolution. I feel like Nintendo has knocked it out of the park with their handheld and given the Ally and Steam Deck, I think the next generation of consoles should target the hybrid style. Is it possible to get a console that isn’t ridiculously overpriced that has a good amount of horsepower in it? Maybe it’s hollow knight, or maybe it’s Final Fantasy Tactics, but I think we’ve plateaued on gaming graphical leaps. Should the industry stop focusing so hard on cutting edge and just aim for better experiences the way Nintendo seems to? Thanks!

Kellan Sandifer

With BF6 having good reviews..should developers have always been targeting the series s as the baseline target? This seemed to work with Indiana jones as well..and maybe even GTA VI

Someguyperson

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft suddenly went from no particular margin target for the Xbox division to a 30% margin target (industry average is 17%-22%, Xbox was at 12%). Do you think this is the core reason for all the bad news coming from Xbox? That's probably why they're going with an extremely expensive console next generation and why their current consoles are completely overpriced. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-10-23/microsoft-pushes-xbox-studios-to-hit-higher-profit-margins

Daniel M

Do you think that if Xbox hardware shifts towards a PC like model that Microsoft will make it easier to use PCs in general as console-like hardware? I'm thinking features like allowing controllers to wake the system, a 10-foot interface suitable for televisions, and possibly other changes.

Someguyperson

It's a 30% margin target, not a 30% year over year growth target. The quickest way to increase margin is by cutting costs, which is why they fired everyone. The issue comes later when they have far too little to actually sell to prop up Game(s)pass.

Someguyperson

The more interesting aspect to that is how your cat actually broke your console? Did they just swat it off your cabinet and it broke when it hit the floor?

Someguyperson

Would that result in more sales on Steam? No, therefore Valve won't waste the resources on that endeavor. Only Sony & Nintendo really care about quality anymore.

Someguyperson

Absolutely, yes. But, as DF is a video product first & foremost, I feel Rich should read the Oxford comma out aloud to make sure there's no ambiguity around the situation.

Someguyperson

Well, the Switch 2 Elden Ring port got bumped to 2026, "to allow time for performance adjustments." Do you think Nintendo saw the performance and told FromSoftware that the experience falls far below the Nintendo seal of quality? Do you have any confidence that FromSoftware can make a Souls game without technical issues?

Mr Bespoke

Hi DF Crew! Have any of you guys ever thought/considered about getting together and renting a Cinema screen out for gaming? Be interesting to know how you would view your opinion on such a large scale screen and its high resolution not to mention the deep bass sounds coming from every direction. Thanks and keep up the awesome work!!

Taggen86

Got the ps5 pro but I have rarely used it since I also own a 5090. Dont like the way pssr looks so if I can get dlss instead I will play the game on pc

Taggen86

I am getting worried about the future of console gaming when i see the rumored specs for ps6 and the next xbox. They look very very expensive to make and microsoft may not even subidize their next console. Tsmc 2nm and 3nm is much more expensive than 6nm. I would be suprised if ps6 end up cheaper than ps5 pro. How will AAA game studios survive if we see a smaller console costumer base next gen?

Taggen86

Do you think ps5 pro is a better or worse mid gen upgrade than what we got with the ps4 pro? Was checkerboarding 4k a larger leap in image quality than pssr?

Stutters Scott

Haha! No they knocked a lamp over on to it and then it just stopped working

Monad With A View

Other segments of the entertainment industry left platform technology competition behind a long time ago, moving instead to collaboration on foundational standards, funded by revenue from the associated patent pools. Does the team think that this is what a 'mature' 'game industry may come to look like, or will proprietary platform innovation always be a core part of what makes gaming special?

What’s up DF :) First time asker, long time fan (since pre VO on Youtube)! With the new Xbox Ally, I’m imagining what my htpc gaming machine will run in the next few years. Ideally I’d hope Steam OS but will Nvidia ever support Linux to make that dream come true? It saddens, but doesn’t surprise me, to hear DF’s description of the “Xbox Windows” on the Ally feels bolted on and not legit - classic MS. After decades of Windows being filth compared to the Mac experience, I lack faith in Microsoft sticking the landing on making a true console OS for htpcs. If you had to wager a guess, do you see Steam OS becoming a viable option vs “Xbox Windows” for htpc pc consoles? I love my 4090, but am dying using windows on the tv and using my ps5 more than I’d prefer. Let us pray the almighty messiah Jenson brings us to the rapture with Linux/SteamOS support. Much love from San Francisco!

Chicken Point

Cross-gen to the rescue! (Many have predicted that we will see PS6 games release on PS4).

Erik Kelly

I really enjoyed John's look back at Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 & 4. I never really had interest in skateboarding games at the time but perhaps it's time to pick one up. I wanted to get your general philosophical thoughts on remasters and remakes. Do the original games lose some of their shine and value when a proper, well-done remake comes along? Or do they stay beautiful, proud, and strong forever no matter what?

tod weitzel

What do you think of the social media videos and reports of using a second, older GPU to run Lossless Scaling? Does it actually extract meaningful performance gains out of a larger, more capable GPU? Have SLI and Crossfire returned to save us from cost inflation?

Spodlude

Gents: Assassins creed shadows heading to switch 2 dec 2nd. How much do you hypothesise this port will have in common with star wars outlaws? Are we likely to see similar worse or better performance and visuals, i always thought the assassins creed games were lighter to run?

Spodlude

Gents: with fallout 4 heading to switch 2 does this mark the beginning of a ramp up of xbox owned IP making its way to the platform? Is the switch 2 an xbox?

Spodlude

Worse, way poorer and less interesting support from developers, especially given the first party output is so much slower this gen!

Spodlude

Oops good spot

DudleyTheGentleman

Hello again cosmopolitan Hitch Hunters of the digital realm, how do you see Nvidia's work on Mega Geometry affecting the future of Unreal Engine as a whole? Will Epic roll out their own Clustered BLAS and CLAS approaches into UE, or is Nvidia's approach a good candidate to be directly absorbed in? Lastly, how will this technology impact/integrate with future features like MegaLights and Nanite Voxels?

Alex's Retro PC

Not really a question but I don’t think it is really worth talking about the next-gen Xbox again unless the team has something new to add to the conversation. it has been discussed ad nauseum on quite a few recent directs and Bond’s comments don’t really move the needle imo.

Pol Arbequina

Hello DF crew! Another week and yet another round of Xbox news to cover, can they not have an off-week?? My question is simple regarding the rumoured PC Xbox: why would someone that only wants to play games on their couch (traditionally known as a console user) want to pay extra money for a Windows OS that they will never use? Surely Microsoft won't give it for free, I don't think they're doing it for the ROOOG Xbox Ally X. And add more money on top of that if Microsoft doesn't want to subsidize the hardware itself.

Jonathan Hamilton

I got a PS5 Pro and have not regretted it, but I am annoyed that high-profile releases have shipped with image quality issues on PS5 Pro. Not having the option to run games in a base PS5 mode seems like a big oversight.

Pol Arbequina

I think good developers can also be passionate about gaming in this day and age. But would you rather earn 50k developing a game or 200k working on AI? That's the main issue

Alan

Hi guys, With the hype building already for Gen10, do you think Gen9 has been a disappointment? It appears people cannot wait to move on already! There have been some good games for sure, but it all just feels so formulaic. Now that the industry is going all in on AI and machine learning to solve its problems and cut costs, what do you think needs to happen to make gaming great again?

Alan

Hi guys, As cool as Project Amethyst and the Magnus Chip tech sound, how much are the PS6 and NextBox going to cost? Usually, consoles have to make do with previous-gen PC CPUs/GPUs, but the PS6 and NextBox seem to be getting what will be current or even top-tier tech with some custom sauce! Leaks seem to suggest the NextBox is going to be a thousand dollars!

Alan

Hi guys, I have been reading about a fair amount of job cuts in gaming media in recent days and weeks. At the rate it's going, there will hardly be anyone left! With gaming often reported as making more money than Hollywood/movies, there is a huge industry covering news and reviews. But gaming coverage is seemingly on the decline. What are your thoughts on this? P.S. Long live Digital Foundry!

Statistical Barista

Hey DF Crew, With the escalating price of RAM and SSDs due to data centers and AI demand. How do you think this will impact the next generation of console hardware? Are we likely to see any scaled back RAM and SSDs sizes like what Sony did with the SSD size of the PS5? As always thanks for the great content, cheers!

Schnoo Skarpsno

Hail, good fellows! More and more Linux evangelicals seem to claim that the only reason to stick to Windows for gaming at this point is for a handful of competitive online games that require anti-cheat. Is this really true from the perspective of a level-headed, OS-agnostic gamer? I'm thinking about all facets of the PC gaming experience, from drivers and software availability and compatibility, to proper resolution scaling and multi monitor use, HDR and RTX etc.; do they all really "just work"? Is the purported improved performance on Linux via Proton cherry picked examples? Gramercy.

goregutz

Yeeeeeees, DF gentlemen. I rally appreciated your series S vs switch on UE 5 video. But after the outstanding star wars outlaws port to switch, I'm beginning to think a larger comparison is due. Perhaps when we have more data after some more ports, considering the upcoming shadows port on the switch? How do you think these two will compare long term, given the results we are seeing now?

Pomps

Hey guys, just wanted your thoughts on the 3 recently announced 3rd party games for switch 2, mainly system shock. I have heard that the game's controls are very pc centric, do you think mouse controls could be implemented to retain that PC experience? If so would you recommend it as an entry point to the genre? (moreso question for John or anyone on the panel who has played it)

CottonBird

How can Sony make their new portable more successful than the Vita? Wouldn't it have the exact same problem: that developing state-of-the-art graphics is expensive? How can they keep a handheld AND a PS6 properly stocked? Even Nintendo, who won the portable front of every console generation they've been in by a huge margin, decided they can't do both.

Pol Arbequina

Hello gents! I'm curious about some of the inside aspects of making a DF video. One that was in my mind recently is how many hours of footage do you normally record when making a game review? And how long do you keep it around for in case it's needed? Cheers!

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hi Lads, why do you think games quite often have set sharpening sliders way too high by default? I usually prefer to have it off or set to some minimum amounts. Do you think people prefer artificially sharpened image since that’s what they also see every day on their phones, where each photo has already been edited before it’s presented on their screen (which I don’t like either)?Cheers!

Jordan Spano

Hey DF crew, I wanted to ask what your feelings were on the state of ‘state of the art’ in gaming. As you’re remit is to cover the bleeding edge do you feel like that sentiment is anachronistic in a time where soaring dev costs and studio consolidations have put more and more emphasis on games being in as many places and appealing as broadly as possible. Thanks for the work and congrats on making the jump to independence.

StefanSt

Hi DF! Did you have a look at “Keeper”? It’s a very beautiful game !

gaël kerchenbaum

Good day indie crew! The 9950x3D2 has been leak, featuring 192mb of L3 cache compared with the 128mb of the 9950x3D, as well as a slightly lower clock speed for the same amount of cores. With the original 3D being the fastest gaming thing on Earth and the non-3D variant being almost head-to-head with its counter part in productivity/heavy rendering tasks, I struggle to see what AMD is trying to achieve here. Does slapping an extra 64mb of cache fixes the UE5-always-on stutter problems? Or are just looking at bigger numbers better for no particular sake? Thanks for your lights, techy gents!

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight Lads, it's now official, Assassin's Creed Shadows is coming to Switch 2 in December as rumoured last week - what are your hopes and dreams for the performance on Switch 2; what do you think is possible given what we've seen with Star Wars Outlaws?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight Lads (2) - Has Sarah Bond said anything on her recent media rounds that makes you think the next Xbox wont be a $1000+ digital only PC-Console Hybrid with no exclusives? .. And if not - Do you think this proposition will get them their mandated 30% profit margins?

digitalfoundry

Pretty much ruled that out 100% in the text above. No we didn't.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Switch 3 will plug straight into your brain.

DaJaCo (Dan)

You'd think people would realise that it's not a great option when the game is mostly filled with fog.

DaJaCo (Dan)

The Oxford comma only reigns supreme when ambiguity is undesirable. Sometimes it's the little mysteries in life that make it worth living.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Fingers crossed for MS-DOS and the Blue screen of death.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Phase 1 was known as Operation "Two Tins" (of paint), in which they painted a variety of objects black and green so that they would become an "Xbox".

DaJaCo (Dan)

If Nintendo really felt the heat, it would be from Sony's next handheld, which should trounce it in performance terms.. while sharing all the same conveniences, and probably being easier to port games to. That'd be what pushes them to respond if anything. Hypothetically, if a Switch 2 PrOLED did seek performance gains from a significant die shrink, they could make it so that you can choose to run in docked OR portable mode while portable (assuming it's a big die shrink, and a bigger battery). OR they could create 3rd performance profile, which retains the 1080p resolution target, while freeing up much more performance for visuals and frame rates. All seems very un-Nintendo though, they'll choose battery life in an OLED refresh die shrink.. and also a Switch 2 lite to broaden the market and lower the price point.

DaJaCo (Dan)

To be fair to valve, they did create a validation system for the Steam Deck to rank the compatibility of games with their hardware - this does create an incentive for developers to optimize things better. So I could see it being expanded for the Steam Deck 2 - and perhaps a little more broadly for other Valve hardware.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Cats never a work a day in their lives, so they can't even aspire to be Professionals. This was bound to brew resentment. He should have got the MSI Claw, I heard that was made for cats.

Ian

Hello DF. With a port announced and releasing in December how do you think Assassins Creed Shadows will perform on switch 2?

Chicken Point

Good point. We're past the question-harvesting deadline now, so between you and me, I do think it's fun to ponder how easily Sony could implement this. Consider: 100% of PS5 games run on the Pro without the devs having tested the game on that machine. So, maybe Sony could implement this "force PS5 mode" option without the devs having to do anything. One question is whether the Pro gets the exact same installation data as the base PS5. If not, then it seems that there's some kind of "Smart Delivery" going on when installing a Pro "enhanced" game to PS5 Pro. If not, then there must be something happening where the Pro tells the game that it is a Pro, which activates the Pro features. In either case, maybe Sony would need to devise a way for the Pro to pretend to be a base PS5.

Chicken Point

I wouldn't claim that the Pro has been impressive thus far. But, I think it has potential to shine during the PS5-6 cross-gen period. During those years, developers will be more and more adept using machine learning upscalers, and PSSR will (hopefully) also be more and more refined. The question for me is, will PS5-6 cross-gen games run at 60fps on the Pro. If, on the majority of graphically demanding PS6 games, you need the PS6 if you want 60fps, then I'll

StrugglingShader

Hi guys, with the recent/upcoming releases of PvZ Replanted and Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection with separate SKUs for Switch 1 and Switch 2 I'm torn. I kept a Switch OLED alongside a Switch 2, so if I buy the Switch 2 version I wouldn't have access to the superior screen, the switch 1 version on the other hand, is forwards compatible, but not optimized. Those are old games, that should have no issues running well on Switch 1 hardware, but you don't get the higher output benefits of the Switch 2. What gives? And in that subject, for retro collections like MK, can developers take advantage of higher resolutions to make better CRT filters? Is that something I should worry about when picking up Switch 1 versions of games?

Special Agent Cooper

IIRC the DF crew has been discussing PS5 Pro as a pricing implication for PS6 at various points now. That's what I was referring to. Basically saying that a machine significantly more capable than PS5 would not be able to stay at only 500.

AlM Lawati

Star Wars Outlaws has received several updates since its release on the Switch 2, mainly focusing on improving graphics and texture sharpness — which I’ve personally found quite noticeable. Have you had a chance to test the latest Update 3 released a few days ago? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the visual improvements and overall performance. Thanks

Samtallic

Spooky greetings Foundrymen! With Halloween around the corner, curious what some of your favorite creepy games are - and have you ever walked away from a game that was just too scary for you? Personal favorites of mine include Doom 3 and Eternal Darkness, but I had to walk away from Amnesia Dark Descent. 👻 Cheers!

BespokeEP

I mean the fact that it is messy & confusing messaging to people like us, who would be considered "gaming enthusiasts" makes me really wonder how off putting it must be for grandparents or parents trying to buy their kid an "Xbox". Or just an teenage/adult casual gamer who just walks into an electronic store every 7-10 years and buys the latest video game console. Xbox hasn't got a clue

BespokeEP

... would you like a prize? A 4090 is 4x the cost of a PS5, and that's just one component, you'll likely want to spend an additional $1000-1500 or so on the rest of the rig, or else what waste. I don't know what sort of pissing match you're trying to win, but congratulations on spending over 6x the value of a PS5 for maybe 2-3x the performance. 🤡

BespokeEP

I hope he reads this one, cause he will be forced to say my name at the end muahahahaha

BespokeEP

Just because a machine is more capable doesn't mean it has to be more expensive. I imagine the PS5PRO actually costs less to manufacture than the original PS5. It's much lighter, and the die is actually smaller than the OG PS5. The big unknown for PS6 will be the cost of RAM in 2 years

Alexander Zyryanov

Hello. The rest of the rig actually costed about twice as much as the GPU. I wanted to treat myself and had opportunity to do it, so rather than buying what would have the best performance per dollar I've purchased the best of the best (at that time). The thing is, once you have such PC and once you spend significant time playing games like Cyberpunk 2077 with path-tracing in 4K, it’s very hard to go back. And why would I go back when I already have a PC that can make modern games shine in all their glory. It makes sense to use it as much as I can, so I play games on my PC. If there will be PlayStation exclusive that I would want to play, it will feel “last gen” whether I play it on PS5 or PS5 Pro. Thus, there is no reason for me to upgrade from PS5 to PS5 Pro, especially if I’ll be turning it on once or twice a year. Hopefully this more elaborate explanation will help you understand my perspective.

BespokeEP

Yup and Mark Cerny's talk for PS5Pro highlighted the many difficulties of a pro console, changing to much can create an absolute headache for devs, when the goal is to maximize gains with minimal effort. Like just listen to Cerny's reason for not going to RDNA3 for the Professional. Sony and Nintendo have very developer friendly mindsets. It's why Sony does not mandate support for the Pro. They were 1000% crystal clear with what you should expect, and people who are disappointed, that's a you problem, nobody forced you to buy it, and it does exactly what they claimed it would

BespokeEP

I don't know if I would say "many" games have poor PSSR implementations. I mean you can count them on one hand, but bad news always stands out more unfortunately. Just like skydiving, you only ever hear about the 1 or 2 failures, not the millions of successful jumps that happen every year. But as soon as the PSSR2/FSR4 update drops, I imagine there will be no poor news to tell
