It's the hardware we've been waiting for. Built on SteamOS, Valve's brand-new Steam Machine runs the same games that Steam Deck does, with 6x the graphics horsepower - all built into a super-cute, premium, cube-like design. Oliver visited Valve HQ to go hands-on with both the new PC/console hybrid and the new Steam Controller, reporting back with impressions, specs and insights from the engineers behind the project.

Where’d this come from!?!?!?

MattGPT

This came out of nowhere, well done Oliver (and everyone else), so HL3 next week?

It looks like a Gamecube that went to the Dark Side. Me wants it.

Excited for this. Hopefully prices are competitive with a half decent gaming PC

I have a steam deck. How specs wise does this compare to it ?

Valve really has a great opportunity here to grab some consoleros into their ecosystem. The onky pain point would be, that the user still has to adjust settings. If all "Steam Machine verified" games came with a pre-applied graphics presets (like some Steam Deck games do, e.g. Chronos) the entry barrier would be removed! It would also be great if FSR 4 would be supported. Upscaling with FSR 3 is so coarse, rough and irritating!

I've been excited/interested in the Strix Halo-based machines as a potential "steam console" experience. With SteamOS 3.8 actually supporting the Strix Halo, I would love to see a comparison between a "roughly equivalent PC like the steam machine" vs. a strix halo system. (Yes, I know that Strix Halo systems will be more pricey, but they look really tempting as a longer-term investment for my Steam catalog.)

Important note. There is a 2tb model listed on steams page! So there will be two models minimum

I'm big PlayStation fan but this...this has to be game changer hopefully in terms of now choosing ultra to medium graphics level and more option to tweak performance such as higher framerate if I am not mistaken with his dream machine. I would instantly switch to Steam Machine and trade of PS5 Pro 😆. I mean so far AMD FSR supporting gameson PS5 Pro console has been working well compared to PSSR. Even though rumor PSSR 2.0 is also in works for PS5 Pro only. I mean what do you guys think? would this steam machine be good trade off with any Sony future console?🤔 Another thing I hope Valve could accommodate with PlayStation users is ability to transfer PS5/PS4 games into this steam machine. that would be awesome do I don't loose all of my PS games if I decide to trade off.

The issue about HDMI CEC is that ONLY up to 3 media devices (including game consoles) are supported and once you add the fourth media player, it will drag everything down to hell. This piece of knowledge really should be more spreaded on the Internet (I spent so much time debugging my system and eventually learnt it the hard way). Most people probably do not know more than 3 CEC capable consoles so they never encounter this but I can imagine everybody in DF will be haunted by this limitation.

And my M4 MacBook is the worst offender. It does not make sense for it to force the TV to switch input to begin with and it is also the fourth media device in my system (I was actively managing the my CEC devices such that I only have three devices with CEC on). And the worst part is there is no way to disable CEC on Mac so I ended up buying a physical CEC blocker

Gamepass not required for online play. This could be quite compelling for many couch players...

So, just to give you some more information and I'll make it pretty simple. The Steam Machine should be roughly equivalent to a PS5 in some instances, not in others. Textures will need to be put on a lower quality because it has significantly less video memory than the PS5. PS4 games that are on PC should be pretty great, much better than they are on PS5 in some cases. However, you will probably need to tweak settings quite a bit if a title is somewhat newer. This is nowhere near a PS5 Pro in terms of hardware power, and the FSR the Steam Machine natively supports is not close to PSSR, or the newest iteration of FSR. You can mod it to run the newest FSR on the Steam Machine, but it is something you'll have to tweak to get working. Transfering games will never happen, not even transfering saves. If you don't have any Steam games, this will be a fresh start in creating a new library. Tl:dr: Steam Machine should be similar to PS5, not PS5 Pro, has less video memory. Library will not transfer, you need to start fresh

Quite a lot faster, by their metrics it's 6x as powerful. If you want to have some tentative benchmarks, search for RX 7600XT on Youtube. It should be fairly close, but take it with a grain of salt, as it could be a bit worse than those

Thank you for clarifying that all to me. What it seems based on your take is better of stay with PlayStation console. I am also waiting for Sony to showcase how PS5 Pro will even get boost upgrade to PSSR 2.0 support. Now that's something to keep an eye out for.🤔
