And here we go! Thursday again and once again it feels like nothing has been done when actually it's been manic! Let's talk Direct #287 where our lead story is the Fortune article on Xbox which reads to me as one part PR opportunity, one part shared background info gone too far. $1200 to $1800 console? Big disagreements between the Helix OS and Windows teams?

We will be discussing that before cracking on with our thoughts on the FSR 4.1 lite launch for RDNA 2. Other things? The demise of BioWare will be in provided it doesn't prove too depressing to talk about. Meanwhile is the leaked Mass Effect 5 trailer on Reddit genuine?

More topics: Sony's new frame generation patent seems to be using generative AI in combination with motion vectors and user input to break the latency trap while we will be going a bit 'inside baseball' as we discover that Elgato 4K Pro is an actual capture card with non-MJPEG 2160p capture at 120fps. But how?! Other 4K120 options are available but right now I am thinking this is the best. For our needs at least.

Finally, the DF time machine delivers once again with the news that it is five years since Oliver's first video. Expect plenty of lavish praise and anecdotes for this crucial member of our team!

But now it is all about you! Comments, topic suggestions and questions please! It will likely be Rich (ie me), John and, of course, Oliver at the mics. Usual deadlines: 8am GMT tomorrow for the main Direct, same time on Monday for the Q+A show. Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, most of the time games look better on Series S than on Switch 2. But not with Capcom: the Switch 2 versions of Monster Hunter Wilds, Pragmata, Resident Evil 9 and Street Fighter 6 all look significantly better than their Series S counterparts, which are particularly plagued by very low resolutions. According to Tom's review back then, Street Fighter 6 even looks better on PS4 than on Series S. What's going on here? I find it hard to believe it's a scaling issue with the RE Engine. Is Capcom putting more budget and effort into its Switch 2 ports while botching its Series S releases?

Hello gents. EA have killed Bioware, humanity lost, the Reapers won!

Taggen86

Thoughts on the first working switch 2 exploit that was revealed today? Should Nintendo be worried?

KeeGar

Good day, Digital Gents! Rich! Can you ask the GamesMaster for any tips on lowering the price of the Helix before it comes out? And can we all agree that Oliver wins the coveted Golden Joystick for the hours of editing he’s done? Cheers, mates!

Leftisthominid

When are we going to get the Rich Will Tom episode?

Zero

Hi Gents! Less a question and more an FYI for something you might want to look at. Youtuber LTSharpe uploaded a video about a mod for Oblivion Remastered they created using the Claude AI that claims to make performance gains in the 30 to almost 70% range (in some cases). Given the teams history of investigating mods that claim to fix performance, I thought you might be interested! https://youtu.be/K8WkCz6cuHk?si=anxoqLHOCLkP-Opg

Do we need more videos that say "wow Switch 2 ports are amazing!?" Pretty sure it's well established now that the Switch 2 isn't as crap at playing games, with a decent image quality, as many of us assumed given the specs. Turns out Nintendo? They MIGHT actually know what they are doing and designed decent hardware with Nvidia after all... (Mostly sarcastic here but honestly I'm surprised anyone at DF is surprised that the games work well on the system...)

Terrain Filmore

I think Capcom for the most part tailors most of its ports for each system and this is true with it leveraging the strengths and weaknesses of the switch 2. It’s not just accessing upscaling features but manipulating geometry, textures, lighting, etc.

Is there an Ocarina of Time graphics analysis in the works for DF? I can’t wait to see this one!!

Hello gents I finally got a Steam Controller and it has been great to play older PC games streamed to my TV using it. It solves all the problems with trying to play those games with a controller. Similarly I got an electric sit/stand desk at home and work after your recommendation and it really made a difference. What smaller things improved your gaming experience, not the hardware inside the box, but a peripheral, a change of setup or something else? There are lots of articles on PC upgrades, the best monitor or TV, modding tweaks, Optiscaler, Special K etc. but about the overall set up? With hardware upgrades being incredibly expensive, what smaller and more in budget things should people look for to improve their experience? (Next week can all the DF team be drinking beer from their pint glasses?) Cheers!

Hello m'foundrymen. I have just received my 25th anniversary Xbox Series X controller and its gorgeous translucent green form has taken me back to 2002 when I picked up my OG Xbox. I have very fond memories of that console – especially playing Midtown Madness 3 on a nascent Xbox Live. I'd love to know your fondest memories of Microsoft's original Xbox – and perhaps your biggest disappointments. Have a splendid weekend.

I have a somewhat odd question for Oliver, but personally I'm dying to know. I've lived in Minnesota almost all my life, and people here have always loved saying we're "basically Canadian" but I've started to wonder, do people in Canada even know we exist? Have you ever heard anyone around there say the same thing?

I know the general concesus for lossless scaling was that it was not great , with tons of artifact and noticable input lag But given the popularity of Linux port of it and it's alternative (lsfg-vk/mako/magpie) it is clear many gamers so not feel or see those problems , should Sony or Microsoft invest into similar technologies that do a more simple frame interpolation approach for frame generation for current consoles ?

zurce

Should something like Nvidia Smooth Motion be possible on the Nintendo Switch ?

Sir Raymond Tracing

Why, hello there! John's 29 minute in depth RDR2 tech breakdown remains one of my favourite videos of all time. What kind of coverage can we expect of GTA 6 from the masters at Digital Foundry? Thank you for all you do!

Jonathan Hamilton

Project Helix has been described as a hybrid console and PC that will run PC games. But does anyone actually expect such a device to let users run unsigned code?

PotatoGamer

Hello gents, one little quality of life request: Could you add chapter markers to the Podcast releases? At least in Apple podcasts with the supporter feed they do not show up and I would hugely appreciate it, if you could add them. Cheers!

Andrew Franges

Do you think foveated rendering could ever come to flat screen games with eye tracking tech?

Nicholas Long

Hello DF! I'm a supporter and long-time consumer of DF content. Pleasantries aside, my thoughts on a $1,200 console are this, video game systems have mostly been immune to inflation and have stayed at the "toy" level of pricing. This seems to be an unrealistic permanent expectation especially with the present storage crisis. One thing covid proved (and scalping demonstrated) is people are willing to spend easily into the thousands and I doubt this missed Sony and MS' notice. If a new console were to perform around an RTX 5070ti level, even $1,500 is a steal. Do you think the general consumer could adapt to those prices as they have certainly done so with things like many smart phones, especially those who upgrade their +$1,000 smart phones at a regular clip?

Kris Graney

BioWare are a shadow of their former selves, so whilst it is incredibly sad, the writing has been on the wall for a long time. We the fans have been living on hopium that they could deliver a fantastic Mass Effect game but there is now way it could sell gang-busters like the new EA owners would require to justify the development costs. This year’s N7 is going to hit differently., and I guess I can give up on Mass Effect Legacy Edition coming to the Switch 2. 😢 Thank you BioWare for the many hours of entertainment I have had from your games. 🍻

Kris Graney

I believe there was also a developer who was working on a very similar fix which didn’t use AI at all. They’ve released it via discord only so far. RenoDX Reforged.

SL0MAR

I think Nintendo is always worried.... Im curious when the first homebrew will execute a persistent cfw.

SL0MAR

If metacritic means anything, they won at Anthem...

Kris Graney

It appears the Mass Effect Universe video is real, in engine according to the text intro. A video to lament on what could have been and what technologies you see? I would love a John deep dive on the Mass Effect series.

Ednamode

Could the lack of a temporal AA in gta 6 trailers be because they were waiting informed about qssr and fsr 4.1 coming to the current gen consoles? What are the chances we see temporal AA in gta 6 instead of fsr 1?

MittenFacedLass

What do you think will be the next 1st party QSSR implementation, based on studio history/current games? Similarly, who do you think will be the first 3rd party to implement it? Do you think some studios will wait to do concurrent updates of QSSR + FSR4 on Xbox at the same time?

MittenFacedLass

Don't think it would work well, outside of massive screen sizes. Would be too noticable.

Andrew Franges

VR is an inch away from your eyes, and it's not noticeable on that.
