Have you looked at using pix (the directx graphics debugger) for doing tech analysis on pc? I think it could be useful :)

Anonymous

Would you rather: Play All Bubsy games back to back or All the CDI games back to back

Buislu

What game (I suppose because it's a pain in the ass, even if it gives good results) you CAN'T WAIT to stop benchmarking?

Pat

With the PS3 store closing, do you have any recommendations for digital only exclusives worth picking up in the meantime? All I can think of off the top of my head is Tokyo Jungle, and would like to not miss out from others.

Anonymous

What are your non game related hobbies? Or the things you do to wind down after a hard day benchmarking?

Anonymous

Do you think DLSS and UE5s Nanite will have a big impact on PC VR games? Not only improving rendering resolution and close-up detail, but lowering the GPU entry barrier for high-end VR visuals.

Stephan

Dear DF crew, Do you plan making another video on CRTs on modern gaming systems? I really loved the video on Control on a CRT and it sounds very compelling to try it out. Do you know any vendors that still produce these monitors? Did any of you try out a gaming console on a CRT? Love, Stephan

Hey DF crew 👋 Have you ever considered adding some sort of “feels like” metric to your performance graphs? In your videos you give your impressions whether or not performance dips affect the gameplay. Do you think this is measurable? So for example a dip from 60 to 40 would be more “yellow” in the graph whereas a dip from 120 to 90 would still be “green”. Of course that’s also dependent on how many dips there are in total, frame time pacing, whether you’re using a VRR display etc. but I’ve been wondering about that.

What are your thoughts for digital game preservation utilizing "piracy"? There are many cases where its just not possible to buy the original game like Transformers War for Cybertron and No One Lives Forever. In NOLF there is a great "pirated" copy that has wide screen support amongst other updates that you can download for free? Also with the Psn store going away, it won't be possible to "purchase" unobtainable PS1 games like Megaman Legends 2 and Tronne Bonne whose prices are astronomical.

The Portugeezer

Regarding the closing of the PSN stores and as someone that has all the library of games in digital format (PS3, Vita), how do you think Sony will address this issue? Should Sony finally release an update on the PS3 to allow games to run from external HDs just like the Xbox 360?

Valli

What tech, hardware or software, do you think had the shortest shelf life? preferably something that was hyped up before coming out.

Have you considered doing benchmarks and review content for streaming hardware/equipment? Not only the specialised things like capture cards but looking at the best hardware for dedicated streaming PCs (both performance or value for money) or for single PC streaming setups (NVENC, 5900X and 5950X in various scenarios for example).

Arvid Falk

Last year we got the excellent C&C Remastered Collection, and rarely have I ever FELT so much playing a remastered game. What would be your dream game from your youth to get that same treatment?

Abhi

What do you think of the potential of Dolby Vision for gaming? Also the uphill battle it will have with little to no support on PS5 as well as PC?

Anonymous

Hello, gents! What is the “ultimate” modded console for you, personally? ie. Dreamcast with DCDigital and MODE? N64 with Ultra HDMI?

Bishop Nelson

Regarding resolution, and motion resolution, ive noticed that on my LG B7 OLED the difference between 60fps and 120fps at 1080p appears sharper and (at least from couch distance) isn't far off from a 4k 60fps image. Am I crazy, or is there a reason for this? Does this apparent sharpness come from better motion resolution, is it a result of the way my TV displays the image, etc

Anonymous

Have you considered training a neural network to rate image clarity in games? From my minimal experience using neural nets it seems like the sort of thing they'd be great for.

Not related to the proposed topics, but I have a question: Do you think te current trend on console games to allow the users to choose between performance, graphics and sometimes RT options will continue? What do you think about it? When the mid generation was introduced it made sense as you had extra power above the baseline so you could ask the user what they wanted to prioritize as there was always something developer-defined being sacrificed on the baseline, but now with PS5 and Series there is a new baseline and no extra power. With Miles Morales I played it all in Performance mode, but at the beginning I spent a couple of time toggling between modes to choose the one I wanted. After I completed the game they updated it with the RT Performance. It seems to be the definitive mode and in my personal opinion it should be how the game runs out of the box without any options. I understand people have different tastes, but for me te overall current user experience on consoles have a lot to be improved when it comes to initial setup. We have to manage 2 storage spaces, wait a long time for the copy from the physical disk, wait for the update, then choose settings so you can pick what features you will be missing out (loose RT or loose 60fps). I always enjoyed consoles for the simplicity, "it just works", I was surprised in a good way when I got a Switch with a physical copy of Breath of the Wild and I could start playing seconds after inserting the card. No installs, no updates, no configuration. Straight to what really matters.

I am a huge fan of DLSS since it increases performance substantially while image quality is almost as good as native resolution. But DLSS is not free, Nvidia chose to use space on Turing and Ampere dies for tensor cores. How much could rasterisation had been improved if Nvidia had used the same area/transistor for CUDA cores instead?

On the subject of Sony allegedly planning to shut down the PS Store for the PS3 and Vita, not only this will be bad for digital-only games and DLC, but several games released on disc will be rendered unplayable without any patches. Zone of the Enders HD Collection comes to mind. What do you think it will be Sony's solution to that, if they plan to go forward with the shutdown?

Doc

With rumour of Sony closing PS Store on PS3, if not the entire network on it, what's your take on the eventual post shutdown ? Do you think sony will give one last fonctionnality update to the ps3, allowing us to install games directly from disc ? (I'd like to not hear ps3's bluray drive when playing in a quiet room someday) How unlikely it is that they would store every games' patches on an archive website free to use for us ? The store is already dying either way, we can't buy on it from the official website, and many games aren't on it anymore. The important question may be how fast it will ? And did I say that it's really, really slow ? And also while downloading from it ? Will we really miss it actually ? Anyway, spring is here, how are you feeling guys ? ------------ About Sound Blaster (I have three of them), how far ahead of its time was EAX from your point of view ?

Sandy

Would you prefer to have a tail coming out of your belly button that you can control or hooves for feet that allow you to run double your normal speed?

Speaking of soundblasters- Any plans to do more game audio focused content? maybe like Alex' tech focused but for how audio works in games?

Anonymous

One of my concerns for Switch going forward in the next 2 to 3 years is when the current gen consoles are taken advantage of is that game design could fundamentally change with the introduction of these super fast SSD’s. Mark Cerny talked about game designers no longer having to design long corridors or elevator rides to load and ditch assets going in to a new area. One of the large factors of the Switch’s success has been the great 3rd party support. Do you see this as something that could be a problem once developers start to take advantage of the new consoles?

Matt Hargett

What’s a PS3 PSN-only title you’d like to see get released on physical/a new platform? Blast Factor (a BluePoint Games production), with its amazing 7.1 surround design, smooth 60fps gameplay, great use of SixAxis, and addictive co-op play is probably in my top 3.

The Portugeezer

Bloomberg released this week more info (nothing official) regarding the next Switch model, new Nvidia CPU, more added memory, DLSS, 4k when connected to an external TV/Monitor, 7 inch Samsung OLED screen, etc...any comments from you guys on this?

Jason Guffey

It's my limited understanding that DLSS works with preset resolutions like 720p and 1080p, but there are plenty of Switch games that run at less common resolutions (Xenoblade 2 at 900p comes to mind). Does DLSS work in a way where these oddballs could be supported easily, or do you think Nintendo's implementation will still support them?

Karl Ruben Weseth

Do you have any insight as to what happened internally at Sony for them to turn so completely away from backwards compatibility in the past generation? The only two preservation/long tail-oriented projects they've done recently – the PS2 classics on PS4, and the PS1 Classic – have been technically shoddy, which is tempting for an outsider to view as another symptom of a corporate culture that isn't interested in preservation or the long tail at all. Is it as simple as the internal culture having been shifted by an influx of business-first leadership? Thank you all for the great work you've been doing; and I have to say I really appreciate what you're doing with the new DF Direct. Also, Audi has been a great addition to the team!

kate

If the rumoured OLED Nintendo Switch supports DLSS on all games, do you think Nintendo will even need to eventually release a more powerful version in the future, given that DLSS already gives a significant boost to performance?

Pol Kallamata

Hey DF Team! I’m a long-time fan of the show and supporter. 😊 My question for you is regarding Microsoft DirectStorage, and whether you plan on doing a deep dive on this feature in the near future? Given that the new generation of consoles are designed to make use of vastly improved I/O throughput with PCIe Gen4 SSDs, and that this capability is set to affect not just loading times but in game asset streaming as well, do you think PC gaming will soon start to see systems with fast SSDs and DirectStorage capability become mandatory for playing new titles? Also do you believe it will be necessary to have a PCIe Gen4 SSDs to keep up if gaming is going in this direction? As someone with a fairly recent and capable system, but with a motherboard that only supports Gen3, I wonder what the future implications of this tech are.

Related to the rumored DLSS-equipped Switch: While DLSS 2.0 has shown it can take 1080p up to 4k with excellent results, do you have any concerns when it's starting with the 600p, 720p, 900p and similar resolutions we sometimes see in docked Switch games?

Steven Milne

The thing is, it won't be. Nintendo is also upgrading the chip inside the Switch along with DLSS. So think, Tegra X2 (or whatever) rendering at native 1080p with DLSS 2.0 to 4k. Game changer

Steven Milne

Isn't the general concept that the DLSS silicon and rendering is still significantly more efficient that more CUDA cores with native rendering? The idea is it's a lot more efficient to render at 1080P and DLSS to 4K than brute forcing the native 4K render with more CUDA cores.

1. Regarding a desire for quantitative methods of evaluation for clarity and the serious methodological challenges therein, have you considered qualitative methods as an alternative? For example, there could be scales that you assess on after viewing the content up close - whether there is distracting artefacting, whether you have the ability to clearly track distant objects visually and so on. Or there could be blind a/b testing of like-for-like footage between versions (or as close as you could get) to determine whether differences were subjectively noticeable at standardized distances. 2. What criteria does each member of DF consider to be the cutoff for when something becomes "retro"? In the early to mid 00's, I definitely considered Super Nintendo to be "retro", and even the PS1/N64 to some extent. As I get older, it becomes more of a struggle for me to accept something like Xbox 360 to be "retro" although the logical parts of my brain can't find a good reason why it shouldn't be considered as such. 3. Could Alex please say "Wolfenstein" again?

Alex's Retro PC

What is the video that another DF member has done that you either admire the most or wish you had had a shot at doing?

Stephen Szabo

Is there any likelihood for more testing of Stadia versions of games? Do you think Google will have any plans on increasing the hardware capabilities of Stadia (in terms of the hardware for rendering the games) to become more competitive with the now-current generation of consoles? On a similar note, what about Microsoft's xCloud? Will Microsoft upgrade their server hardware so cloud based games will not be equivalent to the Xbox One S? On a phone screen that quality is probably fine, but with PC and console support for that soon (and the rumors for smart TV integration), do you think leaving it as-is would be sufficient?

J3llyS4ndw1ch

Given the PSN closures, what does Microsoft's big focus on backcompat do to the value of the Series consoles vs. PS5? Does Sony need to add more value to PS+?

N Switch Pro. I'd rather talk about NS "2", is it okay? Some years ago I think maybe 2018, Apple unveiled the iPad Pro which had a computing power equivalent to that of an XBOX ONE. The Switch compares to a 360, GPU-wise. So, if we take the usual 7 years cycle for consoles I'd expect NS 2 for 2024-25. So my expectations would be that NS 2 could, by then, double an XBOX ONE. But given the COVID crisis we're facing maybe some humbleness should be inserted so let's say that NS 2 could come by 2024-25 with 2 TF of computing power. It almost makes a melody right? NS 2 packing 2 TF! That would be comparable to a 1050 Ti. We have already laptops with RTX GPUs, and given the huge success of the Switch maybe this wouldn't be such a far dream. What do you Experts think? (I think given the XBOX ONE iPad Pro mentioned is already like 3 years old, the NS 2 should be at least as capable as an OG XBOX ONE)

Anonymous

I pressed Enter instead of Shift+ sorry. PSN. They should at least allow the PS3 and other devices users to download the games or buy digital ones while shutting down the remaining functionalities.

Anonymous

More on the NS "2". I said doubling the XBOX ONE and not more because though the iPad Pro from years ago could sort of match the XBOX ONE, the iPAD Pro is considerably more expensive than a console and the Switch considering the NS 2 would launch at about 300 USD again. So, from my layman's perspective a portable 1050 Ti seems a good fit for the NS 2.

Did any of the four of you fall into the demoscene rathole at any point?

I've just received an HP Reverb G2 VR headset, and now need to buy a new gaming PC. With RTX 3090 cards in short supply, what should I do if I want to build a high-end gaming PC?

Anonymous

I don't know if that fits in, but I would be interested in how important fast RAM is today and what DDR5 could bring to the table. With 4k and RT (even if 4k is upscaled with DLSS from 1440p/1080p) the GPU is clearly the bottleneck. I found some benchmarks with even ddr4 2133mhz vs 4400mhz wouldn't make any difference in 4k gaming. Can't find any RT-benchmarks, but would be interesting because RT can also be expansive on CPU-side. So if you focus on 4k/RT 60fps, should you worry for faster ram then just cheap 2400mhz that you may have laying around anyway? And can DDR5 bring something new?

Ali Almutawa

hi guys, Love the show. In theory, can PS5 emulate PSP, PS Vita, and PS3? thanks

Christoph Zürcher

Hi all, a question related to the Soundblaster: does any member of the DF crew still have a dedicated soundcard?

Anonymous

Is there any interest to check out .kkrieger and demoscenes in general given the UNESCO recognition in a RetroPC/other video? I thought it was covered already, but my searches are coming up empty. I'm sorry question is not related to the topics for this weeks direct. I've asked this two other times on Twitter and Discord, so I'm sorry for repeatedly pushing the question.

Joe Tangco

In light of the recent rumours of Switch "XL" having some form of DLSS support, do you think the handheld screen might now also have VRR built in? Furthermore, do you think Nintendo will have any reason to upgrade the dock output to HDMI 2.1 (given how unlikely they'll be using anything beyond 2.0)?

Euan Dewar

I asked this last week but I dont think the question fit that panel, so will ask it again if you don't mind: It seems like at least a few of you guys have learnt multiple languages. I would be interested to hear how you went through that process and what prompted it in the first place :)

Soban

if the games do get output at 4k, i dont think it will get anything higher than 30fps if thats the case, i think the current 1.4 could be enough given it supports 4k30hz
