Calling all patrons! We are recording the next episode of DF Direct Weekly and this week John, Alex and Tom will be taking on various topics such as Outriders, the Mortal Shell 1080p patch, and a deeper dive into the Cyberpunk 2077 patch. Additionally, we'll have a bit of retro talk this week as a new Castlevania prototype has surfaced much like Dracula's castle itself, and Tom got a PVM!

Please share your Patreon exclusive questions in a comment below, and we'll answer several of them on air on DF Direct Weekly.

What is your favourite Castlevania game? (Classic era)

Rich, John question for you: do you still use your FW900s? I don't see them on the channel anymore.

Hey guys, I feel like most of the time movement/traversal is the most important aspect in a game... It's one of the simplest and hardest things to get right. With that said: what's your favourite run cycle (from both of an animation and as a mechanic perspective)?

Sandy

Would you rather have woopy cushions constantly attached to the bottoms of your feet or ears double their current size but they do offer you some improvement to your hearing?

Hey DF, What are your experiences using consoles with your CRT's? I have a 4:3 crt (21" apple studio display) which is amazing, but required a significant amount of tinkering with CRU to get working properly on my pc. It would be so cool if it was feasible to use it with e.g. a ps5. Best regards, Jakob Thorsen

You guys often have to deal with spiteful criticisms and supposed debunks on Twitter and YouTube targeting your analysis and comparison videos. How does the team handle the vitriol on social media and has the hate around your content changed since committing to in-depth video content?

Magnus Berg

Pickles are great, so RICH in nutrients. Which are your favourite pickles? 🤓🥒🥕🧀

Allan Lindqvist

Would you consider doing more retro hardware focused content? Like modding/repair of old consoles and monitors? (Tinkering with crts can be quite dangerous though) Maybe you could collab with technology connections, a really great channel for people interested in retro technology

David Rodriguez

What really was the Nintendo Wii hardware? Another GameCube, two of them taped together or one with another sawed in half? What was Hollywood's secrets?!

Anders Lønning

With Audi's overwhelming excitement for first person shooters like Haze and Resistance, how will the rest of you work to get first dibs on covering upcoming B-tier shooters

Alex's Retro PC

If you weren't in this particular job but still in the video games industry what would you want to do instead?

Doc

In the ps2-gcn-xbox era, if you could name one thing that annoyed you the most, what would it be ?

ChrisFratz

This is a question for John specifically, but when they VR remake of Myst comes out on PC would you be willing to do a DF retro video on Myst?

Joe Tangco

You guys, and others, have previously referenced not-yet fully baked XSX/S dev tools, which explains why much of the early stuff coming out doesn't fully leverage the capabilities of the system. I think Phil Spencer even commented on it at one point in late 2020. At this point now, have you guys heard of any developments with the XB dev tools/environment?

Avery Baker

Any thoughts on how Video Games as a whole will continue to evolve over time? With Microsoft moving towards a more service based industry; how will this affect not only Sony and Nintendo but, Gaming as a whole? I'm not sure if you guys have heard of NFT's but it got me thinking about solutions to things becoming more digital. I personally will continue to buy physical and get my hands on N64, Gamecube, and DS copies to have an impressive line of shelves like John and Audi.

I'm anticipating John's response : to feel better, just tell yourself those people will join in hell the inventor of the 50Hz PAL format and suffer for eternity.

I really enjoy your channel since 2016, so much that I sometimes go back to watch old reviews and analysis, to see how the tech and art did grow since, for the pleasure of the eyes and the pleasure of listening to your take on those games. But I'm bothered by the lack of one promised video that never happened : the Nier Automata Xbox One review. What happened ? Rich, you made a video about your impressions on a first Xbox one X build and promised the full review but... nothing since then. My point is not to whine here, it's perfectly normal you can't do everything... but Nier Automata's engine has a history of performance that is fascinating. The results between One X and Pro seemed intriguing to say the least, and it would be awesome to face them with the soon-to-be-released Nier Remake, as it's releasing again on One X and Pro. We're going close to the end of the Nier's bumpy story on this gen... but you missed that one chapter 🙂

Why do you think that the playstation 5 SSD speed advantage has not manifested in games yet with even load time being generally very close to the series x , Also is Control ultimate edition being significantly smaller on the Playstation 5 a sign that other developers are not utilizing the PS5 compression technology

Art Vandelay

Could the slight performance advantage of the PS5 be actually explained by the hardware itself? Sure the Series X has the TFLOPS advantage, but the PS5 has a much higher clock frequency. Maybe RDNA2 scales better with raw speed than CU count? And there's also cache coherency, a big point of focus in Mark Cerny's power hour last year. Since we don't know the intricacies of the PS5 architecture, could that also play a role?

What is going on with Mortal Shell’s PS5 1800p update. Frame rate is all over the place.

I want more MH Rise coverage. Can't believe it's running a on switch sometimes.

I took a break from Cyberpunk after forty mostly enjoyable hours on PC. Returned for 1.2, but it didn't feel any different to me. And that's the real issue I think the game has: the city constantly feels empty and lifeless to me, despite great missions and supporting characters. I think Red Dead Redemption 2 set a new bar for open worlds, but Witcher 3 felt so incredibly immersive as well. Do you think the 2077 world is actually fixable?* *I appreciate I'm assuming anyone at DF actually holds the same sentiments

Deathpool707

Hello, not a question, but I’d like to hear about your thoughts on Gamepass continuing to release cross platform games day 1, with Outriders and MLB. Just seems like Xbox continues to announce huge power moves with these 3rd party games coming day 1, but maybe it’s to make up for their 1st party games, like Halo, being pushed back.

OMG ! the aliasing on the PS2... even in RGB, It was a nightmare for me (also, you forgot the DC)

Chase

Have you guys thought about ways to do performance analysis of VRR games on the xbox machines? Because the resulting frame rate will drop much less than the games do in the vsynced presentation, since many of those dropped frames aren't actually 16.6ms late, they may only be .1ms late, so a 54fps result when vsynced on the normal chart may be something like 59fps in a VRR presentation. This would be particularly interesting when looking at 120FPS titles I think. This is probably a capture card limitation but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Something custom could also be rigged up potentially.

What was the original inspiration for the name Digital Foundry?

The Wooniest Woona

I recently got a MemCard Pro for my PS1, and I love how it improves the experience of playing original Playstation. It got me thinking, what are some things you all would like to see to improve the experience of playing older consoles? Seems modern tech can solve many of the annoyances that we experienced back when they were new.

Pol Kallamata

Hey guys. Have you considered doing a video where you each go over your backgrounds, and how it came to be that you acquired your technical knowledge regarding video games? Like most people who watch your content, what stands out to me about the channel is the level of competence with which you discuss the technical aspects of gaming. I'm really curious as to how you came to develop the skills and knowledge that you bring to the channel. And the extent to which these things were acquired from self-learning, your academic backgrounds, and your professional experiences prior to Digital Foundry.

Any interest in looking into overclocking on the PS Vita? I've only ever used it to clean up the performance problems in Corpse Party: Blood Drive, and I've been wondering what other titles are worth visiting on that machine that may or may not benefit from the overclock. Also, can I get more analysis talk in French?

Sonicx9

Can you explain what was the thing that ruined the Google Stadia version of Red Dead Redemption 2 resolution/framerate was it Linux OS or the cloud streaming limitations considering the Google Stadia has 10.7 Teraflops of power?
