Hello everyone! Summer has passed and autumn rears its head on us all, and of course we are here to make things cozy by the fireplace with another DF Direct Weekly! This time, John and Audi are joined by special guest Coury Carlson from My Life in Gaming! Yes, it's a crossover, and of course we need your questions. Among the things we will discuss this week is the CMOS battery fix from Sony, we speculate on some new Klonoa trademarks, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 might be returning, and much more.

Share your questions and comments below, and help us welcome Coury onto the show.

@John How did you set up your atmos speakers and what is the allocation in your Denon AVR? I've been toying with the idea of buying atmos speakers for quite a while. But its a little confusing. "Front Height"; "Top height" & so on. @John&Alex: How did you guys end up in Germany?

With Nvidia's RTXGI (Ray Traced Global Illumination Solution) now available on Unreal Marketplace, do you think this could be a better solution than Lumen for UE5?What ive seen of some example usages, it gets similar results and the perfomance scalability is much higher. It seems like many games are using light probes and this looks like the next evolution.

New Patron here! Excited to be part of the DF community, I really enjoy your guys' work! Now to my question - with the trend of timed exclusivity becoming more prevalent across all platforms, could timed exclusivity (outside of deals with publishers and platform holders) be utilized as a way to mitigate heavy workloads and crunch for developers, i.e. focusing on one platform for launch instead of spreading development across several and then using the exclusivity window to shift focus elsewhere?

Hi all (and welcome Coury!). In a 2014 episode of Double Fine Adventure, Tim Schafer lamented that it was now normal to take 3 years or more to develop a game. In 2021, it's now quite normal for it to take 4-5 years to produce mainstream, high budget games. Given that this trend is unlikely to reverse and may continue to get worse, we are nearing the point at which game development lead times converge with hardware development lead times. In light of this, do you think we have seen more or less the end of bespoke launch titles beyond tech demo scale? Even PS5/XS seem to have struggled to justify more than a tiny handful of such things. For any large scale game, a majority of development will need to have taken place prior to anything like a dev kit, and in some cases before target specs and expected hardware features are known to developers. I apologise if this question is too traumatic for John to contemplate!

Hello Friends, Looking at Rich's latest video with regards to PS5 SSD testing and our DF Discord homebrewed #TapeGate, it seems like the random read IO requirement for current games like RnC are not that big (<190K for SN750SE 250GB) whereas the internal SSD in PS5 in theory should be able to do >1M 4K IOPS. So my question is, What do you see as potential use case in future games to utilize that many random read IOPS? considering real-time fast traversal (e.g Portals in RnC) is already possible using alternative techniques using much slower hardware? Would we ever need to render everything full res in real-time? Would the SoC be able to handle it? And last but not least do you think a use case for Sequential bandwidth requirement of 5500MB/s or 9000MB/s (compressed) in future could be large scale decompression of game assets in real-time which might have originally been e.g. 300+GB in game size on PS5 if they were not compressed?

Hi, DF! It looks like the latest Nvidia driver has enabled DLAA support in Elder Scroll Online's Public Test Server. How does this technology compare against other AA methods in terms of image quality and its performance impact? What are your opinions on the implications of this technology for future games?

HI DF team! I'm a bit confused about the devkit for steam deck. given that it's a PC in essence, couldn't the specs and performance be virtualized in an SDK container? Do you guys have any insight on what the devkit provides in this specific case for devs, that an SDK would not have?

Hi guys, big fan of your work. If a theoretical PS5 Slim were to come out in a few years, do you think there's a chance it will be all-digital only with no disc option? Or even the PS6 for that matter? I know that John would not prefer this but do you think the industry heading that way is inevitable?

Evening my dear homies 💕 I remember back in the day I bought an issue of Mean Machines Sega with a VHS included were i first saw Streets of rage 2 in action. I clearly remember it was running ofc in 50hz cause I live in Sweden (it was an imported magazine from the UK ofc) In that time I didn't know much about 50 and 60 hz differences so it was looking normal to me. When I finally got the game I noticed that the music was running faster than the video i saw earlier. Why exactly is that? Because some games in pal the music runs slower too. Thank you for your hard work and stay safe 💕 P. S 100 Swedish crowns does have worth 😘💕 💕 💕

I'll give this a shot again! Gamers and gentlemen, I would really love to hear more about games you're passionate about, especially to hear each of you list and talk about your favourite games of all time. Your end of the year GOTY-lists are really refreshing and interesting to see after a year of tech heavy talk; imagine if you'd do this a little more often? Your expertise in game tech is fascinating and always interesting, but your perspective on games as experiences is of equal interest - to me anyway. Any chance you will do this? And if not, would you mind answering this now? Cheers

Are there modern software based techniques that could have improved visuals on old console hardware if they had been known at the time?

Hi Gents. How do you actually do pixel counts? I understand you inspect a high contrast slope and notate the stair stepping. Thats the extent of our understanding. If we examine said slope via magnifing glass we would always count 2160v on our screen. We could imagine groups of 4, 9, 16, 25 etc pixels mono coloured to represent a "pixel" but thats obvesly not whats going on. Please enlighten us.

Hello DF Panel. What do you think we may see regarding backwards compatibility on PSVR2 for old PSVR titles? Could we see significant improvements to resolution, visuals, and tracking? Could there be something akin to Backwards Compatibility+ on VR? Possibly any improvements at a system level not requiring game patches? Is there a chance it will be so fundamentally different that there will simply be no backwards compatibility?

Hello and thanks for the good work. Now that Sony and Nintendo showed a couple of their next titles, what are your most anticipated games, either from a technical standpoint or from a personal one?

Video playback hours on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have shot up significantly since moving to a variable refresh display (Pro Motion). I wonder what this means for streaming on iPhones. Could the portable gaming battery life improvements be a factor consumers aren’t thinking about? Would love to see this tested with Xbox Cloud Gaming, Stadia, and, if possible, PS Remote. https://9to5mac.com/2021/09/14/iphone-13-battery-life-compared-iphone-12-11/

Hey DF, Not a proper question, but a content suggestion. Would you consider covering Diablo 2: ressurected and perhaps combine it with a DF retro piece covering the original game and the landscape it released into back in the day? Personally my favourite, childhood RPG. Best, Jakob T ps: loaded the new game up yesterday to compare it to the old one - the "legacy mode" in the new version really does not do the old version justice - why do you think that is.

Hello DF, I hope you don't mind if I wander off-topic here and use this space in a somehow selfish manner. I really like the CRT technology and I was wondering how Switch titles would compare on them when opposed to their counterparts on more powerful hardware. Say a comparison between versions of The Sinking City or Vampyr for example, or other games with a lot of contrast between lit and dark elements on screen. Let me know if you prefer that I delete this post and write my comment on Youtube instead. I'll do so gladly. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

what kinda of CPU power would the switch 2 need?

Hello everybody. I am still using 1080 tv, and will for next year or so. I feel often punished for that with newer games. Many developers don't consider my resolution and prepare games to only target 4k or around, so tons of console resources(I own PS5) is wasted on 4k, which I can't even use(I think next GT is a good example). Is 1080 dead?
