Hi everyone, it's that time of the week again - the time we ask you for your input into the next edition of DF Direct Weekly! As usual, we're looking for your suggestions on topics for inclusion into the show, but what we can say right now is that we're going to be busy discussing last night's Sony State of Play and we'll also be sharing impressions on Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.

But it would not be DF Direct Weekly without your contributions! So please feel free to pose any question you want about the news of the week, or... just anything really? We love to answer some of the more 'off-diary' questions completely unrelated to the 'latest gaming and technology news'.

To facilitate this, Patreon helpfully provides a blank box below. Thanks!

Hey fellas, what speed of hardware adoption should we reasonably expect from the gaming community (PC or console)? Legacy support is great as it allows people with moderately older to significantly older hardware to still participate in the latest games, however it also tends to hold back new games from reaching the heights they otherwise could have if they had simply abandoned older hardware considerations and focused on what's next. Consoles are the prime example of course, since they have distinct hardware generations that only update every 3-7 years, but even PC hardware can start to show it's age rather quickly as games try to push the boundaries (e.g. Alan Wake 2). How often should we be expected to upgrade our hardware so as to not overburden the march of progress?

Hey guys. Question on the business side of the industry. We all know the tentpole AAA games like GTA, Spider-Man, etc have huge ROI, but what about less well known games in the AAA sphere, like Yakuza Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth? They review well and are critically liked, but the publishers do odd things like lock NG+ behind a pay wall. It is hard to believe that Sega and other publishers are this greedy. Are practices like this just a way to make sure they cover their losses if the game is not well received? Or is there a meeting where they’re like “let’s rip everyone off! “? And then everyone cheers and they order expensive wines, cheese and hookers. Id like to believe they’re just protecting their business and workers, but what do you guys think?

Question for the team: What was the last game you reviewed that you actually finished? And what percentage of games you review do you find enjoyable or compelling enough to dedicate your personal gaming time to?

How does the DF Team record gameplay on the Switch in Portable mode, Switch Lite, and Steam Deck? Is it some kind of overlay? Aesthetically, it's very pleasant.

What is your comments in the fact that they're rumors of European retailers not restocking Xbox games anymore and multiples big videogame stores closing around the world (like here in Chile with Zmart)? Is physical media in videogames ending anytime soon?

Rip Van Winkle

This week, Cyberpunk 2077 patch 2.11 dropped with a new "Prioritize P-Cores" vs. "Auto" setting for Intel CPUs. I'm curious how this affects performance given Alex's findings on Cyberpunk's scalability with P-cores and E-cores both on. Is this, coupled with Intel's "APO" program, proof that the Windows scheduler and Intel's thread director simply aren't good enough for an uncompromised experience? Should more games take this approach?

Do any of you have any favorite 'traditions' or habits that help you to be the most productive?

Hey guys. Given Suicide Squad's disastrous launch, what do you think it's the most embarassing aspect of it? Is it: a) Gotham Knights being the better game overall? or b) the Arkham Subreddit being the lesser trainwreck? On a more serious note, do you think a launch like this can potentially shut down Rocksteady, given their reputation as a highly regarded studio?

Seems like much has been made of AFMF being like DLSS 3 frame generation for everything, but if AFMF stops generating frames whenever there’s a lot of motion on-screen, doesn’t that defeat the point of high FPS? What’s the point of a higher frames when looking at a relatively static image?

andre surles

Dear Sirs, Recently picked up a 4090 build and while impressive it’s been a settings and consistent performance minefield thus far. It truly makes you appreciate the turn key console experience. Would you all or anyone purchase a PC that just worked like a more powerful console?

Jonny_5a

Yesterday’s State of Play got me thinking, what’s the state of video compression these days? Feels like I see compression artefacts all over web video, do you know if there are any improved algorithms on horizon? Maybe I’m just overly sensitive to macro blocking

andre surles

John, would you consider doing a state of PCVR racing games in 2024?

McGridlz

Hey guys! I’ve been following you all for a few years now and recently became a supporter. I wanted to thank you for all of the information and knowledge you put out as it helped immensely when building my first PC after being on consoles for 20 years. 4080 + an LG C2 is a dream. My question is: What’s a game that you keep coming back to or something you loved that deserves a shoutout?

Having an AI-neurysm

Thoughts on the Until Dawn remake/remaster being built in UE5 rather than Decima like the original?

zephyr

Hi DF team! Is there a game that you love despite it generally being considered not very good?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Seems like most of the news this week is on the Sony front - which titles are you most excited for from the State of Play? - I'd love to get excited about Kojima's new walking simulator, or the renamed bioshock game, or even "Rise of Tsushima".. However I found myself most pumped for the ever so egregious "Stellar Blade". I think it might be the first big break-through game from a South Korean developer! P.S. What do you think to the latest rumours about a PS4/PS5 game compatible Playstation Handheld "launching with PS6".. ?

DudleyTheGentleman

Now that RTX Remix is out, what games do each of you desire to see "remixed" most? An interesting revelation is that Ray Reconstruction isn't currently, or openly planned to be, included with Remix. Wouldn't you think RTX Remix would be a prime showcase for Ray Reconstruction? Lastly, what's up with the DLSS 3.5 update to Portal RTX? Wasn't it supposed to add ReSTIR as well? Nvidia announced it for last fall, but now crickets...

ctg867

Vita 2 confirmed? Have you seen the rumors that Sony is working on an AMD powered handheld? The reports claim it would be compatible with the full PS4 library and devs could back port PS5 titles to it. Do you think this is real and would you be interested in such a device? I definitely would!

Turkey Gobbler

Hey guys, so DOOM 3 BFG Edition has its issues, but can we take a moment to appreciate the absolutely superb 32x sampled motion blur implementation?! To this day it is one of the best screen space motion blur techniques, and it looks amazing at 120hz on an OLED. Sure, it's not a fancy per object blur techniques, but it doesn't matter, imo, because it's so high quality in its usage.

KYHAHN

Regarding DLSS on Switch 2: could DLSS2 actually help save power and extend battery life? I've read a handful of experiments people have done in regards to any energy savings from using DLSS2 and DLSS3. One was for how DLSS3 seemed to let the 4090 save a lot of power while running Cyberpunk, and Igor's lab did another. But I'm curious if you guys over at Digital Foundry have ever looked into how DLSS affects power usage from the GPU. Does a frame limiter + Native use more energy than frame limiter + DLSS?

Octolimar

Hey DF team! So, proprietary engines have been really showing their excellence in the last year, but at the same time I would like to know where you feel some companies are falling behind a bit with their in house tech, and what key improvements you would be looking for in their next titles. Team Ninja's Katana engine and Fromsoftware's engine come to mind here; not fatally flawed (at least in Wo Long) but rather lacking in modernity. The obvious go-to is support for upscalers in Fromsoft titles, but what else? Ps. my username is pronounced all-imm-are, like the pikmin character :p

Hey DF crew - I have a question about latency and…music games! I’m a big fan of old school Konami music games like Beatmania, Pop’n Music, Guitar Freaks, etc. I keep an old CRT around for this purpose, but are any modern displays fast enough to hook up, say, a PS2 with these games and have them be responsive enough to work well? Thanks for all you do, and shout out to the retro content for the warm and fuzzy nostalgia! :)

Mark Smith

Hi DF Crew! @ctg867 mentioned what I wanted to ask about. My question for you is what type of ecosystem could you imagine if Sony released a PS6 with a complimentary Vita 2 that would conceptually be like a "Steam Deck" for the PlayStation platform with the ability to dock to a TV and play PS6 or backward compatibility games, albeit with an AMD mobile chipset. Do you think this potentially has a chance of success for them if they went in this direction?

GrandDestroyer

Hi DF crew! This one is mostly for Rich. How do you setup that 1800p resolution and upscale it to 4k? You mentioned it a few times in your RTX super reviews. Thanks in advance!

Leftisthominid

Important question, is Persona 3 Reload a #stutterstruggler?

Leftisthominid

Have you reconsidered doing a collaboration with Random Gaming in HD? The Radeon VII tests may be up his alley.

Leftisthominid

Now that Richard has switched to Unreal Engine 5 per DF Directs 56 and 87, if something unexpected happens during recording, will the new shaders not be able to asynchronously compile and thus cause an unfortunate stutter?

Diego ElRey

Hello DF. I wanted to address a comment that Rich made about latency. The comment was that controllers mask latency compared to a mouse because they are less precise. I want to say that this is not true. It can be easily refuted in the fighting genre, which is exclusively played with controllers. The CPS2 arcade games (Let's use Super SF2 Turbo as the example) come in around 4MS of latency. If the game is re-released for another platform, which it has been 1000 times, if that version is otherwise "arcade perfect" but adds another 3MS on top, it would be unplayable competitively. The difference in latency between the XBOX 360 and PS3 is also the reason that competitive Street Fighter 4, SFxTekken, Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 moved to XBOX for that whole generation. That was a huge deal, people in that community bought XBOX 360s just for 3 games. There were times that latency sensitivity has been to the detriment of the experience; Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 (both Unreal games) were also played on PS4 with considerably more lag than PC. Player numbers by platform meant there would be more people having to adjust to PC than PS4, so top players with PC would actually practice on PS4 before tournaments. Latency can definitely be felt with controllers.

Leftisthominid

I have a bespoke question for John (and Audie). I am learning Japanese, but I can pretty much only read kana at this point, too early for Kanji. I want to try to play a video game in Japanese, and I was wondering if you have any recommendations. (Furigana over Kanji are a necessity). Non-bespoke question for the rest, have you ever played a video game in a language other than English or German or Japanese?

Scorpwind

Hey, DF. This question is mainly for Alex regarding his TAA tech focus video. Last week you mentioned how you're mainly focusing on 1080p. However, the image clarity implications of modern AA can still be quite profound and noticeable even at 1440p and in the case of some especially egregious implementations ala RDR 2 and Halo Infinite, at 4K as well. With that said, I want to stress that TAA doesn't have to look so awful at 1080p. By tweaking the algorithm, one can get way sharper results. 1080p isn't going anywhere yet. Especially as long as Nvidia and AMD will keep producing cards like the RTX 4060 for example, that specifically targets that resolution.

Roman Lachance

Hey DF Team. In a previous week, I believe you talked about revisiting old video ideas and/or getting through old promised videos. With that being said, are we ever going to get the Alex/John/Rich follow-up to the Crysis 2 video from a few years back? It was mentioned in the video that Crysis 3 would be a future target for a similar video. I hope that this idea has not been lost to time. Thank you for the content, I have been watching for about 10 years now and can't see myself stopping anytime soon.

t00thr0t

Hey DF! Did you ever take a look at those UE stutter fixes using a tweaked Engine.ini? Always see this solution popping up when #stutterstruggling

Someguyperson

Well, the Bioshock game (Judas) sure does look like Bioshock.

Someguyperson

Sony had a game with an art style similar to Splatoon (Zenless Zone Zero) and another game similar mechanically to Splatoon (Foamstars), but people are still really upset at Palworld for ripping off Pokemon. Why do you guys think people are so up in arms over some Nintendo franchises getting ripped off and why people don't really care about other franchises?

Someguyperson

Do you think "Legendary Tales: Action Role Playing Game" is more "Morrowind" or "Oblivion" in terms of graphical quality? I understand you want to reduce graphical quality to improve overall performance in a VR game, but the new Metro game that was previewed just prior looks so, so much better that it's astounding Sony put both together in the same presentation.

Someguyperson

"Dragon's Dogma II" looked pretty good, but it seemed to have a bit of slowdown in the new trailer. That means it's almost definitely real gameplay, but do you guys think Capcom could smooth out those issues before the game actually launches? If you're a game developer, do you actually want some framerate drops in your trailer to show it's the real deal and not just pre-rendered?

Someguyperson

I know the RF crew has been waiting for more physics-based gameplay, so what do you guys make of the somewhat egregious "jiggle physics" of the Sony game "Stellar Blade"?

Visar

Hi DF Team, do you think it would be a possibility for VALVE to use the uncustomized off-the-shelf version of the Tegra SOC of the new Switch in a possible Steam Deck 2? Or do you believe they will stick with AMD for compatibility reasons?

Abir Chowdhury

G’day Foundineers! John, a couple of episodes ago, you mentioned something about a monitor refresh rate of 120Hz being better than 144Hz in Windows. Could you please elaborate on what you meant by this? Is this limited to the desktop or does this also apply in-game? Should I run my 144Hz monitor at 120Hz then? Thank you in advance, Abir :)

Greg Brown

It looks like Suicide Squad is yet another game where Variable Rate Shading degrades the image. Do you think the technique is outdated now that we have temporal upscaling (DLSS/FSR/XeSS) which similarly decreases shading needs but in a smarter way, and accumulates detail over time?

Someguyperson

With the RTX 40 Super series all fully reviewed, why do you think someone should buy each card? From my perspective, the 4070 Super seems like the best/most expensive card someone should realistically buy short of getting a 4090. The extra performance of the 4070 "Egregious" and the 4080 Super are meaningful increases from the 4070 Super, but they both cost so much money that I don't really know how many people can spend only $1000 on a GPU and not be able to splurge for the full-fat 4090. Do you guys see real reasons to stretch your budget from $600 to $800 or $1000 to get the better cards?

Dan Proudfoot

Hi DF, what's your favourite piece of tech or gaming writing? I was recently reminded of the fantastic "secret developers" Wii U piece DF did 10 years ago. At the time I found it so insightful to the failings of the console that it has stuck with me to this day. Similarly, Jason Schreier's articles on the development of Anthem and other such failures are legendary for their detail and narrative. Has anything stood out to you as a journalistic classic?

Alan

Hi DF, I was underwhelmed by the Sony State of Play! I was hyped for Rise Of The Ronin but it looks worse visually than Ghost of Tsushima, I know gameplay is the most important aspect of a game, but I am really starting to get a bit miffed by the lack of true next-gen games for PS5 & XSX, where are they? (Metro Awakening PSVR2 looked good though).

tod weitzel

How does John feel about GT Sport shutting down and the patch that makes it playable offline?

Julian Shniter

After observing part of Rich's quest to acquire a Radeon 9, it made me wonder. What exactly do you all do with your old PC hardware, do you sell it or do you keep it around. Also does Alex just own all of these time capsule PC's or does he go out and get the necessary parts?

Never Ready Eddie

Hi DF Crew. Where would I be on a Monday doing my work without DF Direct on my second screen? So FSR was not long ago introduced to the consoles and has been heavily used thus far to good and ill I think. Can you reflect on what games had to do before its introduction to maintain FPS, and do you think it has been a good thing or a bad thing it made it to consoles over previous techniques? Lastly, why can't they use Intel's XESS given it is hardware agnostic like FSR?

Mr Bespoke

Hi DF Crew! I was reading one of Mr Leadbetter's review on the Daytona Championship Circuit Edition and came across a segment titled "POP-UP PALPITATIONS" stating "Although fairly faithful to the original coin-op, were marred by its polygon popup. Scenery would just suddenly appear out of nowhere on-screen, severely testing your willing suspension of disbelief." Which got me wondering what is your Pop-up palputations in todays games or passed games and how much does or did it drive you crazy? Thanks and keep up the excellent work!

Big Appa

Hey DF! I recently grabbed myself a 240Hz VRR monitor. Low frame rate compensation kicks in below 60fps and doubles the refresh to stay within the window. I wonder why it doesn't do this at higher rates as well. Would there not be a benefit to a VRR display refreshing the screen at say 240Hz when my GPU is producing 120fps? Thanks!

DaJaCo (Dan)

Does anyone have any good guesses as to what "Physint" is going to be? I'm guessing the name is a compression of the words "Physical-Intelligence".. especially with it being a stealth game / legally rebranded Metal Gear. I'm expecting Metal Gear but with all of the motion-capture, real-actor casting treatement of Death Stranding, Hopefully not in a never ending sandbox. Also kind of curious whether they release a movie or TV series that you have to watch before or after you play the game. What are your informed guesstimates gents?
