They don't know how to disconnect it safely. We see Aida disconnect Radcliffe without his consent and he says don't do that because you can lose your grip on reality or shredd their minds if they don't exit by themselves. Mack's choice is a tough but understandable one. His character this season has hated robots and the framework but now faced with a choice he chose a fake daughter over the real world. Something interesting about the Dark hold and what Aida has done. If you remember Doctor strange 2 had both Wanda and Strange perform a spell from the Dark hold that transfers their consciousness into a body in another universe. Aida has just done that same spell but using technology because that is what she knows so the Darkhold taught her that. Since she doesn't have a body in our team's universe she used the tech Robbie's uncle Eli used to create Matter first to make the body then put her consciousness or "soul" into it.

Mack and Fitz were always going to be the hardest to convince to leave the Framework but for very different reasons. Macks love for Hope overrode any arguement that Daisy could come up with and if Radcliffe hadn't have forced Fitz though the poratal he would not have left either! Of the five people that said farewell to the cruel world, 4 went willingly and seemed to wake up relatively in a good place but the other. Fitz, woke up in an agitated state. And that is probably the reason why thay cannot disengage Mack as it would negatively affect his mental state! The Jemma vs Fitz scene was very tense and I love that Jemma would rather die than admit that she doesn't love Fitz...and thank you Radcliffe for prevent said outcome! For the Aida/Fitz scene, I'd just like to remind you that Fitz wasn't just working on the machine to manufacture a human body. And lastly, this is the first episode since 4x08 that we've had the real Melinda May! Great episode...only 2 to go! Plain sailing right?

Escape from the Framework - for most of the team at least. I actually like that Jemma wasn't able to get through to Fitz - not only is it more interesting from a storytelling perspective, it also makes the most sense given what we've seen. Coulson is the only one who even partially remembered the real world, and as such is the only one that Daisy and Simmons were able to fully convince - everyone else is sceptical at best. Mack choosing to stay is understandable, and just furthers the question of what is real - he's lived a life with Hope, so why isn't that real? TBH I'm not sure that Daisy would have been able to convince him to leave even if she had been able to tell him what happened to Hope in the real world - how do you convince someone to go somewhere where your child not only isn't alive, but (effectively, given she only lived for four days) was *never* alive? Not only that, but you could make the argument for those within the Framework that trying to leave is essentially equivalent to committing suicide - they don't know that they'd remember their Framework life once they leave - an action for which a deeply religious man like Mack is unlikely to be acceptable. Regarding manually disconnecting Mack from the Framework, when Daisy and Simmons went into the Framework they told the crew on the Zephyr that forcibly disconnecting them would cause brain damage - they don't know how to safely disconnect someone from outside the Framwork, as they don't really know how this version of the Framework works. The only person who does know and could potentially disconnect someone safely would be AIDA/Ophelia, however AIDA's protocols almost certainly wouldn't allow her to do so, and Ophelia probably isn't going to care now that she has what she wants. Despite all the heaviness of the episode, there's still a good number of funny moments - Trip's 'indignation' that he wasn't involved with any of the female members of the team is great, as is Mack's "you did not just go and use the Bible against me", and even Coulson saying "this feels oddly familiar"

Something I forgot to mention: Daisy gets to have closure with Trip - instead of her last memory of him being watching him crumble into dust after she gained her powers, and the guilt she likely associates with that (since he was trying to save her), she now gets to have a chance to actually say goodbye to him

Going to watch this tomorrow morning...cannot wait for the next two episodes. The next one is my second favorite of the season...

Henry Simmons (who plays Mack) gets to show his acting range with this arc. I found it so fun to see him as a dad, and really affecting to see him choose to stay with his "fake" daughter.

Think of it like The Matrix, or like a USB, to make it so it's safe to disconnect a drive.😁 What's funny is that they told you, twice, that you couldn't just unplug someone from the Framework or it would "cook your brains". Once when they originally went in and then at the beginning of this ep in the flashback to that moment. You talked through both times!🤣 It's OK. You know now. It was just oddly funny that you talked and were guessing things through both times that they explained it. AIDA's been the only one who's been able to remove someone without their consent because she knows the protocol on the outside to "make it safe to unplug the USB."

Yeah, my brain be braining lately and I totally forgot! Mack's dilemma here is definitely a struggle, more so for us than him I think. Thanks for explaining and comparing to DS2!

Radcliffe's being a big help now in the Framework, which I love. And really, 4x08 - I didn't realize it had been THAT long! 😁

Movies with KL

Yeah, Mack's dilemma is not one that I envy, that's for sure. 😢 It's very real for him and like I said a few episodes ago, we would probably all react the same way if we were trying to be convinced by people we didn't know, but had people we loved "here".

AHH I'm sorry! 😂 I def get ahead of myself sometimes and just love theorizing too much. I did end up watching the other two episodes that close out the season and in the finale I did talk over half of two conversations, but I went back during the review and watched them all fully and then talked about them. I find that Agents of SHIELD doesn't give a *ton* of time sometimes to get thoughts out without talking over dialogue or moments that are very exciting. Especially in this storyline we're in right now.

Thadman

Yeah, there's definitely very little throwaway conversations on this show. If you miss a conversation, odds are you will be confused about something later. Very efficient dialog, which means you catch a bunch of things on rewatch. Some people mistake it for the show not explaining things, but most of the time it's just they missed the reference when it was explained.

Steve Mercier

It was discussed in one of the earlier episodes--I believe by Radcliffe to...I'm not sure whom--that unplugging someone from the Framework without going through the proper procedure would fry their noodle. Aaaaaand...Ghostrider's human host was Robbie Reyes.

Chris Elkins

So much has already been said, but I'll try to add. The complexity of the human mind and the build of the framework with some darkhold influence makes it so real that anyone would fracture being plugged in for to long and unplugged without a proper method. I'm gonna say the Matrix had a lot to do with the writting of the framework story arc. I say newly built human Aida is probably self enhanced knowing how fragile humans are, with darkhold knowledge she knows she needs something to help her live and escape. Now the struggle of the real world dangers finding Fitz and Aida while keeping the framework alive to try and save Mack eventhough he might not want it. So many issues left to solve

Kailey

iain has always been a incredible actor but this arc/season alone just proves how he's the best male actor on the show in my opinion. The scene where coulson is trying to calm him down after he just got of the framework is heartbreaking. Fitz was always gonna be one of the hardest to rescue because unlike everyone else here, his changes stemmed from his childhood. Where he's raised by his father here instead of his mother. Plus not only that aida replaced Jemma with herself in his life as she became obsessed with him its all very messed up taking away his free will like that. the scene with him and Jemma is also so painful they really put the two of them through it :(

Kailey

I feel his choice is also probably understandable to those who have kids watching this especially. Hearing your daughter or son that feels real to you here isn't even alive out in the real world.. a lot of parents would have a hard time abandoning their version of their kid here.
