“We are dealing with something that has never happened on this planet before” That line gives me chills.

I always like to suggest everyone's favorite "Blinking Guy" meme / GiantBomb.com alumni Drew Scanlon's old travel youtube videos. Will include his main one here, but note he has one about "the sounds of chernobyl" and one called "the puppies of chernobyl" if you want more. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdgVcL3Xlkk )

I’m watching this on HBO Max and they aren’t subtitling here either. I’m pretty sure they are letting the moment tell the story. I first watched this on DVD years ago and there were no subtitles for the Russian language. That’s what I like about this. They aren’t force feeding the story, they are letting us see and either get it or not. Like the kids playing in snow at the end of the first episode. That wasn’t snow. It’s radioactive ash.

So glad you seem to be "enjoying" this series. It's one of my favourites. When you've finished, I'd strongly recommend the youtube video by History Buffs that does a deep dive into both the facts and inaccuracies of this show. Link for anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVBy53F-yyk

Thanks so much! I'll def check this out when I'm done. And yes I am enjoying the show very much!

It could make for an interesting reaction *wink*

Haha for now I'm avoiding reacting to this kind of stuff cause that can lead down a very slippery slope and I only have so much time!

Whilst I've read quite a bit about the accident so have a reasonable understanding of what happened, I'm watching this series for the first time - which makes commenting somewhat tricky, as I don't know if/when some of the stuff I do know gets covered. I do know that there are a few liberties taken to condense the story and for dramatisation. The helicopter falling out of the sky as shown after flying through the radiation is a definite Hollywood invention - AFAIK radiation even at those levels wouldn't affect the mechanical components of a military helicopter from that period (I suppose it's vaguely possible a modern helicopter with a lot of electronics could be affected) - but I guess it's a good way to indicate to the audience how bad it is. As briefly mentioned, the Western world found out about the accident after radiation alarms went off at a nuclear reactor in Sweden *1200 km* from Chernobyl two days after the explosion

Thank you thank you thank you!

In your outro, you commented on the phrase "has never occurred on this planet before” -- that was striking. That line refers to what was happening inside the reactor. (By the way, that's interesting regarding your focus on the actual Titanic-- i can see how it would capture your attention. The movie is good.) I remember when Europe detected the radiation. Gorbachev (the lead guy in the meetings w/the distinctive birthmark) was the last leader of the Soviet Union and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for easing Cold War tensions. "... all victories inevitably come at a cost." The end of the episode with the darkness and the dosimeter clicking like crazy is scary.

Pausing at 54:53.... "Quit showing me the dogs" she says. After already crying about the dog running after the bus. I'm already anticipating a high level of reaction episode 4. You are the same level of animal lover I am. We are down to :2 dogs, 3 cats, 1 rabbit, 2 roosters, 16 chickens. We had 15 pigs (freezer full of meat) and 2 older dogs that passed. I sing to my them. My boxer girl Pearl wears a sweatshirt in the winter. I have human children too.
