And we continue this story! Thank you to Nate Jasper for the Reactr request. I didn't realize these movies were all done and released at the same time.

I'm not sure when I'll get to the third movie (unless Nate requests it hah) but definitely want to see this through to the end. 😊 I hope you enjoy the reaction! [Direct link here.]

I agree, the feel is way different, mainly for the change in director and the change of story. Not sure why Oplev didn't direct parts 2 and 3 since they were all made the same year. Maybe he had other commitments, I'm not sure. I do understand the complaint of not having them together, but with her being a murder suspect and needing to be withdrawn more than ever, having Mikael around her would be like putting out a big neon sign telling everyone where she was. You see in the movie how many times Mikael was asked if he had seen or heard from her. Yes, Stieg Larsson, the author of the books, was a journalist and photographer and spend most of his career trying to expose and take corrupt powerful people down, which is why he wrote the Millennium trilogy in the first place, to spread that awareness to the world, to show in gritty realism what these people do and get away with behind closed doors. Thanks for the reaction, always love hearing your thoughts! Oh and yes the comments I left in the initial request were for you personally. I wouldn't have minded if you'd shared them but thanks for keeping them private.

One of my favorite authors is Andrew Vachss. Sadly, he’s now passed away. But he used to write a series in which the protagonist (Burke) hunted down pedophiles. Vachss used the money from the books to fund his law practice, allowing him to represent victims of sexual abuse pro bono. Speaking of pedophiles, he once said something to the effect of: I don’t particularly like children. But I HATE people that victimize others. I know exactly how he feels. It makes the actions of Lisbeth sooooo gratifying. For a couple of hours we can watch assholes get what they have coming. Not advocating real life violence, of course, but it’s nice to live vicariously thru such a wonderful character and see justice done.

Completely agree with you on this one. Noomi Rapace rules, and Michael Nyqvist rocks, and further exploration of their dynamic would've helped this one along; that, and the serial killer murder mystery of the first movie is such a great centerpiece that this one lacks. I think my favorite thing about this movie is that we get some great show-don't-tell moments where it's clear that Lisbeth genuinely cares about other people in her life: her former guardian, Miriam, and of course Mikael. The third movie is my least favorite of the three, but has a great ending (and Lisbeth with a mohawk). Honestly, I can't wait for you to watch the David Fincher version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo--the story will obviously lack some surprises for you, but in my not so humble opinion that is the superior version (and I'm sure some people will disagree with me...yay!).

"Shoe leather" is essentially a phrase that means old-fashioned hard work. The movie spends most of its running time illustrating characters connecting dots to solve a puzzle, so in this case that's the "shoe leather." This one definitely felt a little bit more like an episode of television to me, one that will presumably pay off more in the final "episode." In fact, that is how the extended cuts are structured, with the three movies presented as a six-part mini-series, with two "episodes" per book. I have still only seen these original cuts of the first two, so I can't say what's changed between them. Watching this and seeing where the story goes, I can't elaborate yet, but to the extent I understood what Nate's complaints about the remake were, I felt like I could see why they made these (in my opinion, minor) changes/choices if they were building toward telling a version of this story.

Thanks for watching and giving the excuse to rewatch, and to Nate for the request. Yeah it was kind of sad they had to cut so much of the communication and feeling each other out between Mikael and Salander, so they could at least interact remotely. I love that her last note was there. Nice catch on the espresso machine in Lispeth's new flat, in the book I think both she and Mikael comment on it explicitly. The Paolo Roberto thing was super cute and wholesome in the book, and it's great that they got him to play himself. I don't think this one stands alone as well as Dragon Tattoo, but really look forward to watching Hornet's with you to finish off the set.
