The Syndicate is definitely a most worthy adversary for our IMF crew. Looking forward to seeing this one in a couple of hours.

Finally you get to meet Ilsa, possibly the best addition to series since Benji in Part 3. Awesome awesome character. And that twist during the mission briefing - what a way to raise the stakes immediately! Tom Cruise trained to hold his breath for a little over six minutes to do that big dive stunt. Kate Winslet later broke his record, training to hold her breath for over 7 minutes, and now there's a guy that inhaled pure oxygen and managed to hold his breath for like 30 minutes. The opening plane stunt however... yeah, I don't know how he did it once much less 8 times to get the shot perfect.

I think I can hold my breath for like 40 seconds before I start suffering haha.

This one just might be my favorite. The next one is really good too. But here we get Ilsa Faust, perhaps my favorite M:I character in the franchise, and Solomon Lane, who ranks right up there with Owen Davian for me as far as bad guys go. Going to watch this while I eat.

The reason this is my favorite of all the Mission: Impossible movies is that I think it is the best blend of the espionage thriller material it started out as, and the incredible stunts and action that the series evolved into. I like all eight of the films, so that's not a criticism of the others, just that this one struck the perfect balance between the two. In the behind-the-scenes, they talk about how the actual hanging onto the plane was only so dangerous. The real risk to Tom during the sequence was that he would be hit with something, like a rock or even a bird, which could have been fatal. The name "Ilsa" and the visit to Casablanca, are both references to, of course, Casablanca (1942). Rebecca Ferguson even bears a passing resemblance to the film's female lead, who plays the Ilsa in question. Whether that was luck or helped her get cast, I don't know. One great note (pun intended) about the score is that composer Joe Kraemer quotes "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot as Ilsa's character "theme." If you rewatch her introduction you can hear it in there, and then again at the end when she is driving away. Before they end up in the theater and Cary Grant dumps the bad guy through the stage trap door, the dramatic climax of Charade also has the characters hiding in a sea of pillars, and I thought of it when Ilsa was having her knife fight with "The Bone Doctor." While that tribute may be in my head, I will say McQuarrie mentioned to Cassie that What's Up, Doc? was an inspiration for one of the other films, though. Speaking of McQuarrie, he first worked on the previous Mission: Impossible as an uncredited script doctor. He was around on the set to help come up with minor rewrites and patches when they needed it. Anyway, while this is my favorite, I have come to think of the next one as maybe my second favorite. Already excited for that reaction, whether it's coming soon or coming in a few weeks!

Glad you enjoyed this. The great scene I was alluding to under the Ghost Protocol reaction was the opera scene. It's just such pure cinema, almost like that one scene could've been plucked from the silent movie era. It's just so ingenious how the action is cut to be complimented by the diegetic score of the opera. As Tyler mentions, the creative use of music doesn't end there. The opera is musically quoted throughout the movie as Ilsa's theme, sometimes very subtly. There is a minor key version that happens the very first time Ilsa is on screen. That same little hint of it also shows up after she's stolen the USB stick and is about to take off on her motorcycle. (Plus, the more obvious arrangements of the theme, such as when she's sitting with Ethan at the table and proposes they run away together.) I also want to point out just how much these movies have improved with Ethan no longer being the ultimate, superhuman spy. It started in MI3 when he was always on his heels, that movie ending with his wife having to bring him back to life. And here in Rogue Nation, he needs his life saved *multiple* times by Ilsa Faust. In fact, the spotlight is shared so much in this movie that Ilsa even gets the big action fight with the Bone Doctor. (Ethan's one fight at the end happens off-screen with a mere henchman.)

Always enjoy your reaction and this one was no different. I can sympathize with your aversion to water scenes. Nevertheless, love this movie although I’m excited for MI Fallout. Probably my favorite.

Rebecca Ferguson being cast in this is one of the best decisions made in this franchise. Apparently she was their second choice with Jessica Chastain as their first, but I feel this was better. She was invited to a business lunch to discuss it while filing something else and ended up spending the afternoon with the stunt team learning her limits (and how much further she'd be able to push them with training). It ended up with her being inspired to do as much of the stunt work herself as she can. Rebecca being in something has ended up being something that'll get me to watch it, which is one of the main reasons I _had_ to watch Silo (which I don't regret).

I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this one! You seemed very engaged with it! It's definitely a thrill ride, and that underwater scene is stressful AF, so it was fun watching you go on the "rollercoaster"! I get motion sick from movies quite easily, but for some reason this car chase didn't do that for me. 🤷‍♂️ I've actually walked up- and down those exact same steps that all the motorcycles and car went down! It's in Rabat, Morocco (about an hour's drive east of Casablanca, where the movie claimed it is). Morocco is an amazing country to visit. Very beautiful and interesting culture. I did get the worst case of food poisoning in my life whilst in Essaouira though! 😂 Did see some of the John Wick franchise film locations whilst there. I also visited a filming location from The Gladiator in Aït Benhaddou.
