It's been exactly five months since I shared my reaction to the Season 4 finale. A solid amount of time to miss these characters, and I love that we get thrown into a pit of confusion with them to kick off Season 5!

Since this was a two-parter, I've put them in the same video since I had a feeling I'd do a giant talk session at the end (which I did), but we'll continue with one video per episode through the season per usual.

I'm looking forward to your comments! Please no spoilers! I can't wait to see what's in store this season. [Direct link here.]

Love these parts of SHIELD show. Say goodbye to the rails, we are fully off 'em.

Argh! You couldn't have posted this tomorrow when I'd be at/nearly home?! 😉

For once I wanted to get out both Marvel episodes BEFORE the weekend arrived for most timezones! 😉

Since I can't watch this yet (though I'm trying!), I'll share a favourite moment of mine from another reactor's first watch of this episode. In her intro, she said that after the craziness of S4, she wasn't going to be surprised by AoS any longer - well, that lasted all of two/three minutes after starting the episode! I think most can probably guess the exact moment that that happened...

Welcome back to shield. 2017 is the year of Thor Ragnarök and Guardians 2 in the MCU so the show has gone into space but with a twist of time travel thrown in. Ming-na injured her leg last season so they wrote in a injury in universe and Ian had a busy schedule filming the movie Overlord so he was written out for now.

The writers do a good job of accommodating the story if the actors need it. I love it.

Looooooooooove this season. It sits right along season 4 for me, even though Disney/ABC cut the show's budget drastically at the beginning of this season. And what did the showrunners do in response? They went to the future...in space (sort of)...suck on that, Disney! There's a lot of spectacular shit on the way here, including episode 100 (one of my favorites of the series), and some nice surprises. Fucking-A.

And it worked perfectly for me hahaha. I watched it at dinner time here in Spain

We're back with Shield! For some reason, Mack is extra funny in the first episode. His line about not splitting up in movies was hilarious hahaha Poor Jemma and Fitz, they always find a reason for them to be apart in every season and I just want them to be happy. At least we know Fitz is working on it, thanks to that postcard. I'm so happy you get to finally meet Deke. He's personally one of my favourite characters. You can see in this first 2 episodes that he might be a morally grey person, but he's just trying to survive in this post-apocaliptic future and provide a little relief for others. I don't blame him, honestly. Daisy doesn't know how hard it is to live in this kinda world.

Great reaction and review KL! A lot of fun to watch along, especially because you're so willing to enthousiastically jump into this very confusing and different start of the season, as you called it. I gotta be honest, when I first watched this, I was not nearly as on board as you. I did not like the massive switching of gears. But I came around in time.

I have a feeling that for me personally, it has made a big difference that I've been watching and loving some mind-bending shows lately. First it was Dark, now Severance. They made me not only get used to sitting uncomfortably with unanswered questions for a long period of time, but also enjoy that feeling. I imagine that if I hadn't watched them, I may be feeling closer to how you felt.

It does feel like the writers turned up the humour setting on Mack's dialogue, and I'm here for it. Deke is cool so far and yeah, it is difficult to empathize and understand when you've only been there for a few hours. All Daisy knows is the Framework being used for nefarious purposes by a rogue AI. The Framework for this group of nearly-extinct humans who are being worked and forced to die might be the only thing that makes them feel happy. Although that's dangerous in itself. I bet addiction to it happens very quickly.

I totally forgot to comment on this in my review. I did notice a bit of a difference in the overall look of the show. I think that certain things still looked really good, like the Roach we saw, the effects with Virgil's death, and the look of space. I think I see it mostly in the overall set design and environment. I think it still works, but I also think it could have a bit more oomph to it.

5 hours of mobile download hell later I'm at my hotel and could now finally watch - except it's now midnight, and I've been up since 5am so should really get some sleep!

Not only that, but Yo-Yo is bumped up from guest appearances to regular cast for this season

One clarification, Mack didn't get the postcard from Fitz. Coulson and Mack got it off of Virgil after Mack knocked him out. That's why it's so worn and faded. If you go back and see, right before Virgil is killed and he's going through how excited he is to see the team, he says something like, "Fitz couldn't make the trip, but he's thinking about you, " and he taps his chest. He was tapping his vest pocket, where the postcard was. He thought he still had it. They'd only looked at the front before and saw that it was a postcard and therefore they were from Earth. Mack, before he showed the card to Daisy, he asked to look at the postcard, so he didn't have it until that moment where he looked at it and flipped it over. Also, Fitz couldn't have given it to him anyway since they were all taken by surprise and at that time Fitz thought they were going to prison, like Coulson said.

There was a LOT thrown at us with these two episodes and it took me a few watches (at the time, through reactions and such) to pick up on certain misconceptions. Not because things weren't explain, but because they were dropped in and not really mentioned again and if it was after a scary or funny line, they wouldn't register for most people. Main one being that most people think of the Lighthouse (where they are) as a space station and I heard you say something like "...before they were sent there," talking about Deke and trying to figure out how long it's been, which sounds like you might be thinking that also. But, Deke and Tess gave clues (and outright said) that the Lighthouse was a bunker that was on Earth "when it was round." So, the image we see of the Earth from the Trawler that May and Jemma saw is where they came from. They flew away from it to try to get clear of the debris field so they could send a message to Earth (before they figured out that they WERE at Earth). Deke showed Daisy the same image, probably taken from the trawler or some other ship earlier, but they are in a bunker and because the Earth was blown apart, a large part of the bunker is exposed to space. Everything the characters say here is a detail that is a piece to explaining the situation they're in and what's important to know, without doing exposition drops. But, I think, because the writers knew the story, they couldn't guess what parts people would internalize and what they wouldn't because they were laughing, freaked out or flabbergasted by what was just revealed. I noticed that I missed a lot more details this season, the first time viewing, and found out that many things I didn't get or thought they didn't explain it were actually explained. The writing is very efficient this season and it's easy to miss pertinent details because you're thinking about something else just said or revealed. I probably remember watching peoples' reactions to this season the most, at the time, especially Blindwave's, but also Jimmy Macram (who I haven't thought about much since around the time this show was airing. There were quite a few reactions to this show at the time that I was tuning into. YT was much more open and enjoyable back then.

Another clarification is that Virgil didn't say that it was history that the agents would come. He mentions their history and the way he says it, it's hard to say if he said, "your history" "you're history" when asked how he knew who they were. That was something I noticed later and smiled at the thought that he was mentioning that they are part of history. So, he didn't say it was part of history that they would come to the future. Them coming to the future was part of what makes him a "true believer" of things told by the elders, which very few people seem to believe in anymore, if they even know about it. But, Virgil was considered "crazy" by most people, believing in fairytales.

Chris Elkins

For me I love the opening song and sequence that song got stuck in my head to where I had too look it up, then randomly at where I work over the work radio the song would come on almost once at night ! When I first saw Deke with his helmet on and him flying in from space, I was omg there's no way they got Starlord to cameo on AoS lol. Deke does grow on you really fast he's a fun character. Love the random small jokes with Coulson and Mack to lighten the mood of everything they are forced to take in. Should be a nice refresher seeing this season again :)

Thanks for clarifying! I guess my brain just zapped that moment away haha.

I just rewatched the scene. The subtitles said "I've been studying you for years, your history." and yeah you're right, I definitely misinterpreted it a little bit (not sure why now). It makes sense that based on their history (what we know of, anyway), combined with what else happened in the world (with the Avengers and Thanos and such coming up pretty soon in the timeline), they'd believe in SHIELD to help save them one day. Looking forward to more!

Movies with KL

Oh right, Starlord's mask kind of looked like that too, I forgot haha

Christopher simeon

I forgot to mention I love that hope was mentioned and is the reason Mack is better at Spanish because of the framework. The show never forgets those details .

Aldo Gonzales

We were never in them in the first place, and I mean that in the best possible way.

I think most of what I might have wanted to say has been covered already by others. One fun fact that hasn't been mentioned yet - Jeff Ward (Deke) was originally cast as Virgil, but the showrunners then thought he was too good to kill off in the first few minutes, so gave him this role instead (they might have even created the role of Deke for him - I seem to recall hearing that, but I'm not sure and don't really remember the specifics).

Sean Ellingham

As I recall seeing commented on Reddit when this aired, Mack's Inhuman power seems to be genre-savviness!

Movies with KL

Jeff Ward is good so far! Definitely gives main character vibes already. Excited to see more.
