Was Anna Farris in this one too? Might be thinking of something else...but vaguely remember her playing a pop singer with zero self awareness.

Have not watched this in a long time. I am working all week but hopefully I have time after work.

I saw this once back when it was new-ish and I worked at Blockbuster, so it must be coming up on 20 years. Let's just say I (and I can only speak for myself) am...concerned about how well it has aged -- and that's on top of suspecting that many of the jokes that have aged poorly were maybe not ideal in the first place. In a better world, there would have been many more Amy Smart and Anna Faris movies where they were the leads, rather than being relegated to playing second fiddle to a so-so leading man, like Ryan Reynolds (and that would be ideal regardless -- unrelated to whether or not this holds up).

Didn't love this one when I saw it and I echo Tyler... forget aging well, some of this was pretty dubious at the time. However, they shot this in the city I grew up in (Regina) and the town I was living in (Moose Jaw). Anna Faris is always great and a couple of local people got decent roles (including an acquaintance who has since passed away). Ryan Reynolds was dating Alanis Morissette at the time and people were much more excited for her to be in town than Ryan Reynolds. She apparently made a cameo that they ended up cutting.

Just out of curiosity, taking a look at comedies from the 2000s on my Letterboxd. Some ones that fall into this sort of category that I do like: • Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) -- this one's good; the belated, indulgent sequel, not so much • Bad Santa [Director's Cut] (2003) -- pulls no punches regarding its protagonist • Bubble Boy (2001) -- some dated racial stereotyping in here, but not in service of being mean-spirited, just antiquated cartoon shorthand • Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) • Freddy Got Fingered (2001) -- the most pointedly offensive of all of these, but in an ironic way • Funny People (2009) • Hot Rod (2007) • Land of the Lost (2009) • Not Another Teen Movie (2001) -- a spoof of high school movies, so there are some other movies that would ideally be watched first: American Pie, Cruel Intentions, Never Been Kissed, Pretty in Pink, She's All That, Varsity Blues (and you've already done some others, like 10 Things and The Breakfast Club) • Observe and Report (2009) -- the darkest of the bunch but ultimately kind of a satire of these sorts of "schlubby underdog" comedies • Rat Race (2001) • Role Models (2008) -- probably the film I enjoy that has aged the most poorly, but I love the other 75% of the film • Step Brothers (2008) • Sugar & Spice (2001) • Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) -- theatrical cut only, unrated version is far too indulgent • Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) -- same as Talladega, except this time the longer cut is literally called "The Unbearably Long, Self-Indulgent Director's Cut." Technically a spoof movie of the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, but honestly might as well be a spoof of every music biopic, including several that were made afterward • Wet Hot American Summer (2001) • World's Greatest Dad (2009) -- almost as dark as Observe and Report -- maybe even darker, but then again this has more likable characters in it • Youth in Revolt (2009) • Zoolander (2001)

Oh man, I'm actually sad that I didn't recognize Moose Jaw at all while watching. To be fair, I've only been there like 3 times in my life haha.

Spent the time watching with you, which of course is never wasted time. Taking a punt in perhaps hoping to find a fun missed gem, that I'd dismissed from just the cover...... Anna Faris makes this movie tolerable enough to finish. I just this year binge-watched all of her sitcom Mom, which took me by surprise how good it was. I'll be watching that again, this I will not. 😆

Oh I didn't know she was in a sitcom! I'll have to look into that. Thanks for watching. 😊

This movie is like the anti-When Harry Met Sally. I still laughed at the physical comedy, but not the characters. Looking back and seeing this as 20 years old, it’s like watching the birth of Incel Culture. The idea that you’ve acted nice and said all the right things and have somehow earned a physical relationship is disturbing. Have I liked a girl that didn’t like me back? Yes. Has a girl liked me that I didn’t like back? Also, yes. This movie has not aged well when it comes to the plot and the characters. I’m currently working my way through a news podcast about incels and their online community and beliefs. Maybe it was bad timing for me to rewatch this movie. But things I liked. I loved that this was actually filmed outside in winter. We could see their breath and rosy cheeks. I miss movies shooting on location. It doesn’t happen enough and a genuine winter production elevated this mediocre rom com for me. Watching the reaction and hearing your comments, I echo them. Though I have seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall in the last few years. I think it holds up. Its plot line and characters are not incel in nature. Point being, if you did a little discord rewatch along I would join if I was available. Love your honesty, as always.

Discord rewatch would be fun! What's the podcast you're listening to?
