Thank you to Nate for requesting this on Reactr, to be able to compare with the version of this character from Agents of SHIELD. 😏

You're probably wondering why I watched the Extended. IT WAS TRULY A MISTAKE! I did not even realize that I had until the movie was over and I'm so so sorry. 😅 I am usually so good about making sure I'm watching the most accessible version if I'm not specifically instructed to watch a certain version. While the extended version should be available on streaming, I have applied less of a blur to the movie in my watchalong than I normally do, just in case. I am also providing this page that provides a breakdown of the various timestamps (in both TC and EC). (When I see this breakdown, I'm actually not all that annoyed about watching the extended version.) I'm sorry for any inconvenience this brings and I will be more careful in the future.

This movie was pure cheesy Marvel. I'm looking forward to your comments! Thanks so much for watching.

I never saw this film in its’ entirety, but I do prefer Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes. I’m hoping he returns to the MCU someday. Of course I’m not throwing shade onto Nicolas Cage, but he did a much better job voicing Spider-Man Noir. He’s expected to return for Beyond The Spider-Verse. In the meantime, he got to portray an alternate live-action version of the character for his upcoming Prime show.

Since I feel bad about watching the Extended by mistake, please send me an email at hello@kaiielle.com if you would like to watchalong with me easier.

It's 3AM for me so this will give me something to look forward to watching in about 14 hours LOL

If it makes you feel any better, the extended version of Ghost Rider is the only one that has ever been released on Blu-ray anywhere in the world. Both versions were released on DVD, and the theatrical cut is on digital, but not on HD disc (and neither movie is on 4K UHD yet). In this case, I would argue that the accessibility of one cut over another is mixed. Since the theatrical cut is on two formats versus one, that's an advantage, but there's no reason to think that the version you chose is comparatively obscure. The whole reason it's on whatever service you accessed it through is probably because it is clearly the more widely-available HD version of the film.

I would further add that the question of "which cut is more available" is honestly not as obvious as you'd hope. I do think, among all movies with varying cuts, that you'd probably find that it's 60-65% in favor of theatrical, but the last thing I mentioned in the above comment is going to be a wild card. At the beginning of the HD era, when people were upgrading movies, there are a fair number of cases where the studio thought, "well, we're putting deluxe effort into the upgraded cut we're making, so that will be the de facto HD master," which then may have been provided to digital services. For example, for many years, fans were very annoyed that Walter Hill's The Warriors (1979) was only available in HD in 2007 "Director's Cut" format, which integrated a bunch of animated transitions between scenes that people did not like (in part because they looked very digital, clashing with the aesthetic of the original footage). Obviously, that's not to say it doesn't matter. I understand aiming for the cut that most people can see. Mostly just that it's not safe to assume that's always the theatrical, even though that would hypothetically make sense. There are going to be quite a few, like Ghost Rider, where the truth is a gray area.

I appreciate that info, thank you. I do strive to always watch theatrical unless it's clear that there is a different version of the film that is preferable (or if the supporter on Reactr requests a different version, like Brad did for The Blues Brothers). Nate didn't specify, but then wasn't able to access the Extended without ordering a physical copy. Being that he is in the US and most people here are too, I figured that I would make it a bit easier on members so they can email me and I'll forward a link along. Obviously not making a habit of this, but in a case like this it feels right to do.

I agree that Johnny and Roxy don't have much chemistry. It's one of those things where both are holding on to how they felt in childhood and unable to let go of the idea of each other. But now that they have closure, maybe Roxy can just move on and find someone. Little fun tidbit I found out much later, during the first transformation when Johnny starts laughing, it's not Johnny laughing but the Rider laughing for being let loose again. There's I think 40 versions of Ghost Rider throughout comics. Carter Slade (Phantom Rider) was the original 1966 debut. Originally he was also more like Zorro or the Lone Ranger so giving him Ghost Rider abilities was completely for the film. Johnny and Robbie are possibly the two most famous versions. As far as other iterations, there's some really cool ones and some...choices. (Looking at you, Shark Rider). There's been so many multiverse stories too with the Rider ability being given to various well-known heroes. Actually, there's a comic out there where Ghost Rider meets Punisher. That was an interesting one! I definitely suggest delving into the comics, especially the comic version of Robbie Reyes whose story is so fascinating. My personal favorite though has to be Kushala, the Spirit Rider. Maybe one day she'll get to be on the screen too. Also, something that wasn't explained that well and leads to some confusion, Ghost Rider is really just a title. The person chosen is given the power of hellfire. It's not the same Rider going into different people, hence how Carter and Johnny were able to have the power at the same time. Glad you had fun with it! Ghost Rider's one of my favorite anti-heroes and seeing Nic Cage and Gabriel Luna bring two of the most famous ones to life has been so much fun. Thanks for watching!
