Thank you Brad for the Reactr request! This movie is fun and had so many actors that I recognized! Steve Zahn was certainly a stand-out.

Enjoy! Looking forward to your comments.

That Thing You Do! (1996) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

The extended version is just footage of them playing That Thing You Do 14 more times…. (I’m kidding). That song is a miracle. They play it - nearly in its entirety I think - four times in the first 20 minutes of the movie. And it’s not annoying. If anything you’re starting to like it more and more each time they play it. They do a good job of making it sound like a little better each time you hear it too without really changing it much. But this movie doesn’t work if you don’t buy that That Thing You Do is a hit song. Which is really hard to do and not only do you believe that could be a hit in 1964, I think most people genuinely love that song. The song was written by Adam Schlesinger who unfortunately died in the spring of 2020 due to COVID at 52. He is otherwise best known for being part of Fountains of Wayne and he co-wrote Stacey’s Mom. I hadn’t seen this in awhile, but there was a time when it felt like it was on TV constantly and it was one of those feel-good movies you can pick up at any point and kind of get drawn into. It’s so consistently, but quietly funny. Steve Zahn is so good in this and there’s so many really nicely drawn minor characters from Mr. Patterson to Lamar the valet to Rita Wilson’s waitress and on…. This is a great random Friday off movie, so thank you for this. It was never said in the movie, and I could be off base, but in addition to Guy being the sensible one and the one the business people want to deal with, I always assumed he was maybe a little older than the other guys in the band. Only by a year or two, but it felt that way to me with the inter-personal dynamics a little. I also just kind of assumed Jonathon Schaech was going to be a movie star around the time this came out (he did Doom Generation and How To Make An American Quilt) and then just nothing. It never happened. But I felt the same thing about Billy Cruddup who has had a really decent career and been in some great movies, but never quite became a superstar. So I've given up guessing. SPOILERS FOR LALA LAND (which is kind of already in the video)...but I thought Tom Everett Scott was perfect casting for Emma Stone’s husband. Because I think everyone wanted a different outcome for her and so the end is kind of jarring… but ending up with Tom Everett Scott feels like a really good outcome too. You don’t really know anything about his character, but she married Guy Patterson. How bad could it be?

The extended edition actually contains no more music than the theatrical cut.. It better explains the ‘I am Spartacus’ line.. It explores the budding relationship with the dentist.. It shows why Faye is not disturbed about the bumper tap to her car by Guy.. It fleshes out the male boyfriend relationship that Mr White has.. It better identifies the ‘unpaid worker’ as Guys’ little sister..

It is an interesting watch .. esp if you like the theatrical release..

For almost 30 years, this has been a movie I've wanted to watch but somehow never got around to. Nearly rented the VHS in Blockbuster once or twice, but always seemed to pick something else. Pretty sure it was on our Netflix watchlist back when they used to send us DVDs in red envelopes, but somehow never got to the top of the list. Glad to have finally watched it! Fun, and feels sort of like a prequel to Almost Famous.
