Despite having no nostalgia for this movie of course, the animation style and the beautiful painted backgrounds and the score gave me so many feelings of nostalgia. This was a good one to experience. I'm looking forward to your thoughts too! Thank you so much for watching with me. 🥰

I loved this movie, and the book it's based on (which has very little to do with the movie) when I was a kid. Might just have to check this one out again...

Thank You for this ! Yes, definitely a fav movie. I saw it first time as a rental when I was about 5yo. I didn't read the book til I was 10yo. For sure this was a little bit of a scary movie but I got to see it with my older siblings and they were a bit jokey with calling Jenner "Mr. Marshmellow Nose" be cause of the shape, not just in the movie but also in the coloring books we had. Yes, I had a big (2"x1.5") flip coloring book with different scenes of the movie. I would just plop it down anywhere in my house (much to the annoyance of my parents i'm sure) and color with crayons. The production story and formation of the animation studio is very fascinating. Bluth films are all pretty well beloved. I had the first few movies on VHS growing up. Also, this storytelling with the scary parts definitely takes some inspiration from Hensen's The Dark Crystal. Hensen had said it is important for kids to feel fear and be scared. Unlike today where nothing made for kids is scary. Bluth films hold a special place in many 80s kids' hearts. Definitely mine.🥰

"Hensen had said it is important for kids to feel fear and be scared." - Yes, and it makes for core memories too! When you get older you can laugh at how certain things used to scare you. Def just a normal part of growing up.

Damn, the nostalgia hit hard this time around. This movie is just gorgeous. 🥲 A special round-of-applause for the Jerry Goldsmith (Alien) score for ripping my heart out...again. Seeing how excited you were at Dom DeLuise's name in the cast, you'll be happy to know that Dom was a recurring voice in Don Bluth's films, notably An American Tail and its sequel, (: Feivel Goes West), All Dogs Go to Heaven, and A Troll in Central Park. Probably one of the most iconic voices in animation.

Ahh, that's really fun! He has a great voice for voice acting.

Good ones. Did he direct those old LOTR animated movies too?

Saw it in the theater on first run as a kid, and I was excited to see it because I’d read the book it was based on several years previously (Mrs. Brisby and the Rats of NIMH). It was noticeably different from the book (which is more grounded than the film), but the film was so lovingly made that it became of those indelible filmgoing experiences that you never forget. Still a great watch as an adult.
