It Happened One Night (1934) | Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Looking forward to rewatching this one tonight. You probably make some sort of note of this in the reaction, but as you can probably guess, the scene of them trying to flag down a car is the original gag that intentionally or unintentionally inspired millions of riffs and variations throughout pop culture since. Clark Gable's character chomping on a carrot also provided a source of inspiration for an obscure cartoon character known as Bugs Bunny.

"Daddy, he said you raised me stupid!" "Well, I say, he sounds like a splendid chap!" This was such a treat! I was familiar with the name Frank Capra, but couldn't have told you a single movie by him until now. Can certainly see its influence all over the genre. The scene when Ellie's dad is telling her Peter only wanted $39.60 instead of the reward was almost word for word the same scene at the end of Spaceballs. I thought that was so cool!

This was my first watch too! I happened to pick up the blu ray of this movie last fall at the Barnes & Noble 50% Criterion Collection sale. Thanks for the incentive to watch it this weekend. I agree, the movie absolutely held up. Almost like a movie made today set in the 30’s. I loved the little looks they had when the other wasn’t looking. From subtle smiles, to self satisfied smirks, to concerned furrows. They acted their butts off. I will definitely need to rewatch because I want to figure out what I missed. Peter was unable to catch up with the running baggage thief, but caught up to the car and that thief. He even managed to take the car. I saw that right, didn’t I? And he did it all in a buttoned up suit. Regardless, what an awesome movie and as always your timely commentary added to the experience.
