Weiss sat on the edge of the bathtub, elbows on her knees, staring at the pregnancy test in her trembling hands like it might suddenly change the results if she glared hard enough.

Two lines. It was Positive.

Her breath came out thin and shaky. The bathroom felt too small and bright, too quiet as every sound amplified: the faint drip of the faucet, the hum of the light above the mirror, the rush of blood in her ears.

‘No.’ She blinked but  the lines stayed and her fingers tightened around the plastic stick until her knuckles went pale.

This wasn’t planned. This wasn’t in any schedule, any careful future outline she’d built in her head. She was still twenty years old. She really should have forced him to put on a condom or had taken some precautions. But since the first few times they did it and nothing happened, they didn’t really worry.

She had her career ahead of her missions, the company, her responsibilities, Salem, the long climb toward restoring her name on her own terms. She and Issei weren’t even married yet. They’d talked about the future, somedays, but they seemed so far away, that they settled to focus after things were stable, safe and certain. This was none of those things.

Her vision swam and she had to steady herself with one hand on the edge of the tub. For a second she thought she might be sick, but it wasn’t nausea so much as… a dizzy, weightless panic.

‘What do I do? Issei hasn’t even recovered his memories.’ Her mind then tried to sprint in ten directions at once: ‘Should I tell Issei or not tell Issei? Tell Winter, no, don’t tell Winter. Call a doctor. Issei will freak out, and will he be happy? What if he’s not? What if he is and I’m not ready? What if I fail to be a good mother? What if I’m not enough?’ And then her thoughts slammed into a single name so hard it almost hurt. ‘Issei.’ Her grip tightened around the test again. Her throat closed. ‘How am I going to tell him?’

The image of his face flashed in her mind—his easy grin, his bright eyes, the way he looked at her like she was the only thing in the world that made sense. The man who could fly, breathe fire, fight monsters, laugh in the face of danger.

‘But this?’ Weiss swallowed hard and stood on unsteady legs. ‘Okay.’ She quickly breathed in. ‘You’re Weiss Schnee. You do not panic.’ Her reflection in the mirror looked paler than usual, her eyes wide and haunted. She didn’t believe herself for a second.

—------------------------------------------

An hour later, Weiss sat at the table in their shared apartment like she was awaiting a verdict. The apartment was quiet, with the evening light spilling in through the windows, painting the wooden floor in warm gold.

Her fingers tapped against the table, restless and rapid, a nervous habit she’d never fully gotten rid of. In front of her sat a napkin folded neatly. Under it was the pregnancy test. Her stomach twisted every time she glanced at it. ‘I should just say it quickly and cleanly. Don’t cry. Don’t let your voice shake. Don’t—’

It is then that the sound of keys jingled at the door causing Weiss’s tapping to stop instantly.

As the door opened, Issei walked in, holding his head as if he'd gotten hurt, his hair was slightly messier than usual, jacket slung over his shoulder. He came with a frown, looked worried and unsure but before she could question it, he quickly hid it as he stretched and cracked his neck with a satisfied groan. “Training today was rough. I swear, Sun nearly took my head off with that staff of his.”

Weiss’s gaze flicked up, taking him in. She wondered what he was trying to hide and why he looked exhausted with scraped knuckles, his clothes were scruffed up and with sweat at his hairline.

He noticed her immediately and he froze, gaining a guilty look that was quickly erased as his grin returned. “Anyway, what’s up, Weiss?” He dropped into the chair across from her. “How was your day?”

She wondered what those looks were about as Weiss opened her mouth. But nothing came out as she remembered what she had to say. She could worry about whatever issue that was later.

Issei blinked as he quickly noticed. He then sat next to her at the table. “...Okay. That’s not a ‘fine’ face.” He leaned forward slightly, elbows on the table. “Weiss? Hey. Talk to me.”

Her throat tightened. She felt her pulse in her fingertips. ‘Now. Do it now or you’ll lose your nerve.’ Weiss reached for the napkin with stiff movement. She slid it aside. Then, before she could overthink it, she pushed the test across the table toward him.

Issei paused, confusion crossing his face. “Huh?” He picked it up between two fingers. His eyes quickly scanned it. “…What’s this?” He asked, voice slower now.

Weiss’s lungs refused to work for a second. She quickly forced the air in. “I’m pregnant.”

The words were quiet, but they hit the room like thunder as it caused silence.

Issei stared at the test. Then at Weiss. Then back at the test again.

“…Wait…” He whispered. “Wait.” He shot up from his chair so fast it scraped backward. “Weiss, you’re pregnant?!”

Weiss winced. “I just said that—”

Issei’s face did something strange. His eyes widened filled with terror, then it crinkled at the corners of his lips. And then he moved.

Before Weiss could prepare herself, Issei rounded the table and scooped her up like she weighed nothing, arms under her knees and back and spun her around.

“We’re having a baby?!” He shouted with a laugh, like he’d just won the lottery.

Weiss yelped, grabbing his shoulders for balance. “Issei, put me down!”

He stopped spinning immediately, then set her down gently, hands still holding her as if he couldn’t quite let go.

But he didn’t step back. Instead, he cupped her face in both hands, thumbs brushing her cheeks as he stared at her.

“Weiss,” He said, voice full of stunned joy, “this is amazing.”

Weiss blinked at him, her brain struggling to keep up. He was… smiling. Her voice came out small, almost suspicious. “You’re… happy?”

Issei’s expression softened even more, like the question hurt him a little, not because she asked, but because she’d doubted. “Of course I’m happy,” He said immediately. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

Weiss stared. Her throat tightened again, but this time it wasn’t panic, it was something warm and overwhelming.

“I—” she started, then stopped. She didn’t know how to say all the thoughts she’d been choking on for hours. ‘I’m not ready. I’m scared. I don’t want to fail. What if this changes everything.’

Issei seemed to read it anyway. His hands slid from her cheeks to her shoulders, grounding her. “Hey,” He said softly, dropping his voice like he was afraid loudness might break her. “I know it’s sudden.”

Weiss’s eyes flickered. “It is.”

“And I know you’re probably thinking a thousand things right now,” he continued, smiling gently. “Like how it’ll affect our career and your plans and whether we’re ready and—”

Weiss’s breath caught. “Yes.”

He nodded like that was normal. Then he pulled her into a hug, his arms wrapping around her tightly. “But Weiss,” he murmured into her hair, “we’re not doing it alone. We have a whole bunch of friends to support and help us.”

Her arms hesitated, just for a heartbeat, then she hugged him back, fingers clutching his shirt like he might vanish if she didn’t hold on.

Issei leaned back just enough to look at her again, eyes bright and earnest. “We’re gonna be parents,” He said, as if the words were unbelievable and wonderful at the same time. “That’s insane… but it’s also awesome.”

Weiss felt something inside her loosen, like she’d been holding her breath for hours and only now realized she could breathe again. She let out a shaky exhale. “I was terrified you’d think this… ruins everything.”

Issei blinked, genuinely stunned. “Weiss. No. Of course this wouldn’t. I will always love you.” He pressed his forehead to hers, grin softening into something deeper. “This doesn’t ruin anything. It changes things, sure. It’ll be hard. We’ll be tired. You’ll yell at me a lot.”

Weiss huffed, half a laugh escaping despite herself. “I already do.”

“Exactly,” he said, delighted. “So we’re prepared.”

Weiss stared at him, emotions colliding in her chest, relief, fear, love, disbelief. Then she muttered, voice thick, “You really are an idiot.”

Issei grinned. “Yeah. But I’m your idiot.”

Weiss rolled her eyes, but the gesture lacked any real bite. She pressed her face against his chest again, letting the steady beat of his heart calm the storm inside her.

But as Issei held her like she was the most precious thing in the world, Weiss realized something she hadn’t been able to believe earlier in the bathroom. With him by her side, maybe it really would be okay.

And for the first time since seeing those two lines, Weiss let herself whisper the thought she’d been too scared to admit: “…We’re really doing this.”

Issei’s arms tightened around her, voice warm against her hair. “Yeah,” he said softly. “We are.”
