A lot of people like this episode for the humour, but I'm with you. I can stand Andrew - barely - in most episodes, but this is just too much. And tears to make the seal close? It doesn't gel with me. Especially since those don't seem like tears of regret, but more of fear. Anyway I know a lot of people disagree with me, but that's how I feel.

I love this episode! Andrew is comedy gold!!

Paul Thomas-Humphreys

Andrew actually ended up being one of my favourite characters of the series. Followed by Anya and then Spike seasons 2-5.

About the previous episode, I wonder if the shadow men had somehow been convinced by the First that the Slayer line was at its end. They told Buffy that she was the Hellmouth's last guardian. How did they come to this conclusion?

StephanieB

Andrew won me over in this episode and his tears seem more regret and sadness than fear to me. But I can’t disagree with you about the tears closing the seal- it’s always blood in the Buffyverse, never tears. That definitely doesn’t ring true.

Ron Fehr

From what I gather, Buffy was just trying to make Andrew take the whole situation seriously. Like she said, he was making the whole thing into a story so that he was detached from the events that were happening. He was in the thick of things now, and he needed to see things for what they really were.

Love this episode - it's really the humour though - Not that i mind that - but it's when shows get a little bit meta but still make it work within the show - you could say the same about OMWF - which could just have just beena throwaway but was pivitol in the series. I'm a big Doctor Who fan and I love 'Love and Monsters' for much the same reason - an episode that's largely loathed due to other weaknesses in the episode.

Keenan White

Like it or not, Andrew’s da man! One of the best episodes of the season!

Ron Fehr

Hmm. I'm not so sure. Blood activates the seal. That doesn't necessarily mean that blood will deactivate it.

Ron Fehr

What was that? That was the kid who had so much pressure on him that he thought he would explode.

Ron Fehr

You had a curious look on you when you saw the pig in the basement. Here's why it was there: Buffy made reference to the person who fed the seal it's first drop of blood, Andrew. One attempt to attain some blood involved Andrew trying to capture a pig for its blood.

Ron Fehr

The voice that spoke to Jonathan and Andrew while they were in Mexico obviously was speaking Spanish. And the literal translation: From beneath you, it devours. Or as Andrew would say: It eats you, starting with your bottom.

StephanieB

Domi, regarding your comments on the previous episode ("Get it Done") at the beginning of your video: The Shadow Men are not "nice men". Perhaps you need to go back and watch their scenes again, one more time. To create the first slayer, they chained a woman to the earth and forced a demon inside of her. It is a metaphor for "the R word". It's a little subtle, but they even show Buffy's skirt fly up a little when she is chained and screaming and the dark demon "smoke" is flying toward her (just before the cut to a commercial break). I believe it is a double-meaning when she tells Willow at the end that she "didn't like the loophole"; yes, she didn't want to becomre more demon-like (which I am convinced the spell would have done) *and* also she didn't want to be a victim of SA. They are called "The Shadow Men" because, yes, the demon "smoke" looks like a shadow but also- they hid in the shadows while they left the girls out in the open to do their bidding and fight off the demons for them. I think Buffy can still appreciate and accept her power as the slayer without necessarily liking its origin.

StephanieB

I'm sorry you don't seem to get Andrew or his humor. I'm not much into his usual "nerd humor" but I loved the meta approach to this episode and Andrew has some of my favorite moments from this season ("In my plan, we are beltless", "We are gods", his visual of Spike shirtless during his intro of the main players... why is he the only one shirtless...?? hm.). That said, I can understand why you hate him. He helped cover up Katrina's murder and played along with Warren's plans for way too long. And he killed is "best friend". I'm sure I'm making excuses for him but even though he "knew" it wasn't really Warren telling him to kill Jonathan, I think he did really want to believe it was and that he would be a god, happily frolicking with his friends at the end - he liked the story of it. As for running off to Mexico, I kind of don't blame him and Jonathan. At the moment when they took off at the end of S6, it looked like they were going to get killed at any moment- Xander was not doing well at protecting them. Anyway, like Buffy said, he is kind of like a mushroom, so hopefully he will pick up the flavor of doing the right thing now that he's surrounded by the right people (Remember what he said whe he and Jonathan returned to the school to find the seal in 7x07? "We destroy the seal... then we join her gang and possibly hang out at her house"-see, Andrew, dreams can come true)!

StephanieB

That’s true, I’m just saying in Buffy, we’ve seen the power of blood over and over- Angel’s blood in S2, Dawn’s blood in S5, blood of the fawn in S6…and of course, you know, Vampires. As Spike said in S5, “It’s always got to be blood”. Tears have never played a role before. However, in this case, I like the message that it’s tears, it doesn’t bother me.

Khanach

I can't believe Domi's been trying so hard to find clues to "Restless" and she just missed the Cheeseman again 🤣 Also, I'm probably way off, but I wonder if Andrew's perspective was somewhat of a jab aimed at the audience, like people writing all the fanfics and stuff that flooded the internet at the time in blogs, forums and stuff, or at us people commenting the show and filling the blanks and twisting the facts to accomodate our opinions and headcannon tl,dr: I love this episode, top 3 of the season, but I feel attacked by it🤣

Ray D

This episode is so great. A very creative way to tell a story and Andrew is just such a fun character. He’s one of the highlights of season 7 for me.

Ray D

I don’t get why you think the other characters like Spike and Anya wouldn’t want to be a part of Andrew’s video. If this is going to be an official document of saving the world then they would all want to have their part in it documented as well. Spike is the same guy who did poetry for people, he’s an art school kid at heart and very theatrical. If this was real life and there was a giant battle that saved the world, you’d want people to know you played a part especially if you died in the battle. It’s your legacy.

Ron Fehr

The introduction, to those not in the know, was kind of a nod to an old program from the earlier day of television, called Masterpiece Theater. Although I never personally watched the show, I know that it had a similar format, with the host talking to the audience.

Ron Fehr

Andrew thinking that the words on the knife were simply a part of the design was probably hin just not taking a good look at it then. It wasn't until it was pointed out to him now that he took a closer look and realized that he recognized the language.

I like the parallel with Xander and Anya after having sex from 4x03 “Now we can just move on.” When they don’t actually know if they can move on. But that’s just it though, if he had went through with it and married Anya without facing his fears, it would have been the wrong thing to do. What I mean by him facing his fears is him confronting Anya that he actually had concerns about marrying her because he believed that he would end up hurting her in the end. Yes, she’d be pissed but least they would have avoided this leaving her at the altar fiasco. And odds are they would have still stayed together and when they were ready to try it again, Xander would be passed all that. I think some of what upset Anya was that she thought by him leaving her at the altar, it meant that Xander didn’t want to be with her anymore when that wasn’t the case. He did. He just didn’t want to marry her there and then. There is the thought that maybe he would never be ready to marry her but then it still wouldn’t be about her. It would just be because he wasn’t ready for marriage period. It was never about Anya why he didn’t want to go through with it. It was always about him and his fears. I mean I could be wrong about this but I think they just needed more time. I think they rushed into marriage because Anya was desperate to get on with her life. And Xander I think fed into that desperation when he asked her to marry him because they were always in situations where either one of them could die at any point. And Anya was always worried about that. Dying before she really got a chance to live as a human. To make a real go at it and she was only interested in doing that with Xander and him not wanting to do the same at that point in time would have disappointed her, sure, but least she would know about it. She needed to know that this was what was going on in his head. That’s what I meant about it being the wrong thing to do to marry her. There was something he needed to face and address with his soon-to-be bride. And that was that he made a mistake in proposing to her not because he didn’t want to be with her, but because he just didn’t want to get married to her. Not then at least. They needed more time to see how it went with them being together so he could overcome his fears. To see that he wasn’t his father and that he wouldn’t hurt her in that angry, hateful, violent way he worried he would.

Girl4Music

I didn’t laugh at the ‘we are as gods’ thing too. I thought it was just stupid. And I usually love campy moments like that in a TV show.

Girl4Music

Where’s the Cheeseman?

Girl4Music

This show and its fetish for SA…

Khanach

Just a couple of frames in Jonathan's and Andrew’s nightmare in Mexico. Or should I have called him “Señor Queso”? 😁

StephanieB

In Domi's defense, I've only seen one reactor ever catch that millisecond cameo. Which was impressive, I never would have seen it.

Khanach

Yeah, it’s quite hard to spot. I probably only got it because I've rewatched this episode 20+ times at this point. Ps: Was it Shan? I remember being quite impressed when she spotted him in the recap at the beginning of the”The Gift”…

StephanieB

I don't think so... I only remember Sofie catching it.

Pauline Robertson

No I think you're spot on about them. I also think part of the reason Xander proposed was, trying not to be like his parents, he wanted this to work out, to get the 'happy ending'. He just pushed it and went too fast then realised what he'd done and wanted to back out. It was just at the worst time.

Pauline Robertson

The next episode is mwah lol one of my favs of the show.
