Shiny! Ps: You almost gave me a heart attack when you mentioned "The Train Job", but I'm glad you watched the right pilot!

Matthew

Prediction: Morena Baccarin will become Domi's new Amy Acker 🙂

So I tried getting into the show when Lexi was reacting to it and I don’t know why but it just didn’t happen for me. This time, it did. I think it’s because I can genuinely feel your passion and I always know why you say what you do even if you don’t think it comes out the right way. You’re a very authentic reactor. I really think that helps when watching something for the first time alongside you. So I’m excited to go on this Firefly journey with you because I think it’ll stick this time.

Some other Buffy alums in this episode. The Fed is played by Carlos Jacott, who was Ken in Buffy S3E1 "Anne", and Richard, the demon fiance in Angel S1E7 "The Bachelor Party". The commander of the Alliance Cruiser is played by Andy Umbarger who played D'Hoffrynn in Buffy, and the Creepy stalker who could detach his body parts in Angel S1E4 ":I fall to Pieces". Everybody loves Kayley. Jayne is not really very likeable, but he's eminently entertaining. The chemistry of this cast is breathtaking. The Fox Network didn't like this as the pilot, so they ordered a second one, which is "The Train Job", which aired first. The rest of the episodes were aired out of order, The time slot they were given was Fridays @ 8pm, which, at the time, was terrible. Someone at Fox really didn't want this show to succeed. You are watching them in the intended order, and, if you're like the rest of us, will have a hard time deciding which episode is your favorite! So glad you're reacting!

That's pretty much what I was going to say, but I was working and didn't have time to watch until now. So you beat me to it by about five hours.

Ron Fehr

It's ironic that two of this show's protagonists were big bads on Buffy and Angel. And you may have remembered Summer Glau from an Angel season 3 episode, Waiting in the Wings.

Ron Fehr

Alan Tudyk, who plays Wash, is more well known for his movie roles probably. My personal favorite is his character Wat, in a Heath Ledger movie, A Knight's Tale.

Garrick Smalley

So glad you are into this show. I was hoping you would be.

You scared me to death with the "The Train Job" joke at the beginning. It's refreshing that you're very able to so easily overlook the connection between Preacher Caleb and Malcolm Reynolds given how fresh Caleb is on your mind. Of course, I completely understand why since Nathan Fillion is a man crush of mine. Guy's got charisma oozing from his pores. Glad that you were suspicious of Dr. Simon Tam, I always worry that people will clue into him being part of the show in the credits, it's always fun when they don't and fall for the deception. "You can't shoot people in the gut in the first episode". Is it possible that you're not familiar with shows done by this fellow called Joss Whedon? I had no clue Morena Baccarin was Brazilian. Good call. Morena Silva de Vaz Setta Baccarin. Y'all have a lot of names. Beautiful, beautiful woman. You might know her from Deadpool? They speak a lot of Chinese in the show because it was a superpower in the world when they left "Earth that was" to go colonize all these worlds. Plus, in the meta sense it lets them get away with cursing in Chinese. along with all the "Mei Mei" (little sister) and "Dong ma" (understand?) phrases that are easy to pick up from context clues. There is no show supplied subs, and even real Chinese speakers have trouble deciphering some of the phrases spoken by the American cast. You watched Serenity, the correct pilot. They originally showed the episodes in the order of 1x02, 1x03, 1x06, week off, 1x07, 1x08, 1x04, 1x05, 1x09, two weeks off, 1x10, 1x14, 1x01. The episodes 1x11, 1x12, and 1x13 were never shown until much much later on a different cable channel. Don't ask why, there's no good reason. Just watch them in the DVD order (which I think all the streaming services follow). If you watch the "previously on" segments, you can watch them for 1x02 and 1x03, but I'd recommend not watching them after that since you're binging the show and won't have forgotten anything. Glad you're enjoying it. While Buffy lets you grow into caring more about the characters simply via the amount of episodes, to me Firefly is the best show. I was hooked as soon as Mal solved the Mexican standoff by shooting Lawrence in like half of a second. I burst out laughing at that, and knew this was the show for me.

Summer Glau in Angel 3x13 as well.

Ron Fehr

In Joss Whedon's verse(universe), as they call it, English and Chinese became the dominant languages on Earth before man started traveling to the stars. So you'll hear the ocassional Chinese word or phrase now and then. And Chinese was a way to get certain words past the censors during the writing phase of each episode.

Ron Fehr

Thet weren't just world-building. They were worlds-building.

Bud Haven

I'm looking forward to watching them with you too. I only watched a few of them a long time ago so this will be new for me too.

Ray D

This is my least favorite of the main Joss Whedon shows. I still like it a lot but it’s a “space western” and I’m not really much of a western fan in general. I would put Dollhouse on the same level as Buffy and Angel and have Firefly a notch below.

Garrick Smalley

As an indication of how dark this show might have gotten; that syringe in the box that Inara (Morena Baccarin) opened was something she would take if the reavers took the ship. It would not kill her, it would kill everyone who raped her.

Alex Wright

I actually saw the spin off film Serenity before the series.

Ron Fehr

Same here. I actually didn't know about the series until I rented the Serenity dvd.

Ron Fehr

I remember Alley watching this series. It took a few episodes for her to remember all the words for the theme song.

Ron Fehr

Mal's attitude towards Shepherd Book stems from the end of the battle six years previous. He was willing to keep on fighting, but lost his faith when his side surrendered.

Ron Fehr

Telling Simon that Kaylee was dead was the worst kind of joke that anyone could play on another person.

Eric H

The Fed named Lawrence was on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the main villian of the Episode 3x1 named "Anne".
