“I cannot abide useless people” is one of my favorite lines ever

River put on a cockney accent (working class British) to mimic the one that Badger had (Mark Shepard). So many of your questions will be answered. Including (at a later episode) which episode the cast learns that they were cancelled. Keep in mind that Fillion went on to be Caleb in the next season of Buffy and Torres went on to be Jasmine in the next season of Angel, so Joss was looking after his actors there. Summer had already been on Angel when she was cast for this.

Part of why Nathan was cast as Caleb is so Nathan would be available (and not connected to another show) when Joss got to continue with the Firefly storyline.

Badger bragged that he had his hands on a couple... of invites. Mal and Jayne chuckled because of Bader's comment regarding testicles. Badger needed to make it clear that he was talking about invites, not testicles.

Mal played it out plainly. While he didn't respect Inara's occupation, he did respect her. Atherton wanted to treat her like his property, and not as a person with her own opinions.

Mal even rebelled against the rules during the duel. Instead of waiting for Atherton to get ey his focus back on the fight, Mal used Inara's distraction to turn the momentum back in his favor. Also, Instead of 'finishing him,' as per the rules, Mal left Atherton alive to stew in his humiliating defeat.
